Bye Saturday: College Football Open Thread
Our boys are not in action today:

But that doens't we are not watching any football today. If you are a UCLA football fan you have a must watch game in BYU v. Washington (starting around 12:10 PST on Fox Sports Net).
Other interesting actions include Marshall at Wisconsin, Miami at Florida, and West Va at East Carolina. You can track all the score via WWL here.
So if you are watching the games - especially the BYU-UDub game - thread it up and share all your notes and observations here in our bye week open game thread.
GO BRUINS.

Unfortunately I have to work today… but thank goodness for slingbox. I’m sure CRN will be breaking down the game too.
Slingbox
Did you know that it was invented by a UCLA alum, the brother of water polo coach Adam Krikorian.

i didn't know that
all of a sudden, i love my slingbox even more. i didn’t know that was possible. thanks bb!
Ohio St?
Ohio just scored a TD on a botched snap to go up 14-6 over #3 Ohio St. State looks absolutely terrible. No offensive or defensive line, poor tackling, mental errors. We can hope that this is look-ahead syndrome with u$c next week, but it just looks bad. The best chance of the season for the crosstown losers to get beat is not lookin so hot right now.
Looks like Ohio is folding though
The Buckeyes look very vulnerable but Ohio does not seem to be able to do anything about it. Too many mistakes
Yeah
tOSU was looking ahead to next weekend. They still look very vulnerable heading into next Sat. They don’t have a lot of speed. Their QB is very average. Southern Cal should destroy them next weekend.
bummer too
I always look forward to a chance to see the trojies get spanked. A bit of a longshot right now by the looks of it. OSU has a habit of playing to the level of their competition, so hopefully they get a game plan together to give them a shot. I’ll never stop routing for my other favorite team (whoever is playing u$c)
Looks like it will be a rout
tOSU is incredibly predictable on offense (hint: run between the tackles and occasionally pass deep) and SC has the bodies to clog up the line of scrimmage. I just don’t see them being able to put up very many points next weekend.
If they are going to beat SC, their defense will have to play a perfect game. But after watching how Ohio’s running game consistently found holes just by running out of the shotgun, I don’t see that happening. tOSU’s coaching staff doesn’t adjust to non traditional offenses and SC will take advantage of that.
My early prediction:
SC 42
tOSU 20
so much for SC's tough non-conf schedule
so even if SC blows out OSU, it’s not going to help their ratings too much. i’m not sure if that’s a good thing. I want them to be ranked high, so if we upset them, it’ll be all that much better.
Streaming
Anyone know where we can find the game streaming online today?
It almost seems unfair
how BYU has so many players who are a couple years older than their opponents. It is especially evident on their O-line. Washington rushed 4, blitzed 2 and still got zero pressure on Hall. Its gonna be a big test for Harwell, Price, and Walker’s game planning. BYU already up a TD after their first drive.
Tied up
Locker just has some wheels. That BYU defense has a few gaps that you know Chow it taking note of. Keep it up Washington, give us some film to look at for both of our future opponents!
They both do
I think we can beat both these teams, especially with the defense they will face from UCLA…
A victory for UDub in this game
will be as meaningful for the Husky faithful as our victory over Cal Bears (or the same BYU cougars) last season.
What channel is the game on?

There were few games last year
When he was blunt/frank re. KD/UCLA. I really appreciated that. If he was a typical Trojan, he would have built up KD and sing his praises. He didn’t just called it like it is.
Just like Stewart Mandel – last few years – I have had to adjust my perspective on who are our friends, decent guys, and who are the culprits.
He did go to Cal before transfering
My old man’s wrath is focused on his partner Barry (can’t think of his last name). Mushmouth, he calls him.
My brother loves to tell the story how about five years ago, our old man was watching us playing Arizona and an Arizona player practically twisted one of our guys’s head around with a facemask. Barry says, “Well let’s see if this is a 5 yard or a 15 yard penalty.” My old man yells, “Of course it’s a 15 yarder you dipshit! He practically took his head off!”

Notre Dame
in a scoreless tie with SDSU in the 2nd. Is it just me, or does anyone else cringe when they see the ND field. I just have that memory of sitting in the stands thinking we had a victory and watching it slip away in the final seconds. :(
I don't get frightened ...
I keep thinking what a CRN coached UCLA team would have done to them last two years.
Remember .. relentless optimism! :-)
God - I'll Never Forget That
I was there. In all the college and pro games I’ve ever been to I’ve never seen a stadium erupt like Notre Dame Stadium did when Smardizja (sp?) caught that last pass and hopped into the end zone.

It’s on channel 692….which was exactly the TWENTIETH Wash/BYU channel I checked.
My gosh, OSU SUCKS!! 28-0 in the second. I don’t “get” why so many people think Reilly is such a good coach. Thank the Lord we don’t have him.

East Carolina
ECU is at it again, up 7-0 after their first drive against #7 WVU. West Virginia has a terrible defense, but man are they fun to watch offensively.
UCLA to win 8 GAMES this season...
I was watching the halftime show of the BYU vs Washington game, and D’Marco Farr answered a question from a viewer regarding how many wins will UCLA get this year. His response was EIGHT!!! His rationale was our coaching staff. I’m not sure that I will go out on a limb and predict 8 wins yet myself, but its GREAT to see such positive media coverage in the Neuheisel era, just one week in!
GO BRUINS!
West Virginia just got robbed
Refs just gave the ball to ECU when WVU was clearly out of bounds when he let go of the ball.
Former UCLA O-Line coach Mark Weber
Now O-Line coach for BYU. I thought I saw him on the sidelines, looked it up, and confirmed it.
U Dub up 21-14
Nice opening drive. used half the quarter up.
Mixed feelings
I want UW to win in a way, but with us going to Provo next week I am a little unsure if I really want BYU to lose. Tough call…
Yeah, I'm looking at it that we are scouting two opponents
Looks like it is a nice day.

ECU again
They are not giving up and are in the red zone again. WVU is going down if they dont get their act together. Maybe it would be good mojo for us. We get an upset when they do?
wow
ND could not get in the end zone even when starting the series inside the 15 – had to try a FG from 27 and the muff the snap!!!! ND is getting booed on their home field. Still 7-0 SDSU
And they get no points
Hell, why couldn’t we have played them this year?

The BYU game
could be good for our run game. Washington has gotten quite a few 10 yard runs, especially on delays and counters.
Hopefully we will be healthy by next week
by bruinbabe2000 on Sep 6, 2008 2:20 PM PDT up reply actions
yeah
but it looks like it could be a good chance for our inexperienced guys to get some good reps under their belts and maybe build some confidence and experience.
We will need our backs
to give us some production. Hopefully we can get something going outside with Carter, Dean and Franklin’s speed.
Looks like ND's weak spot is their offense
by bruinbabe2000 on Sep 6, 2008 2:21 PM PDT up reply actions
ECU
up on WVU 10-0. Time of possession is absurdly lopsided. I think it is about 20 minutes to 6. And ECU has run about 30 plays to WVU’s 9.
West Va defense
get some serious chunkage of yardage against Villanova last weekend.
ECU’s coach – Skip Holtz – is going to be hot property after this season.
LOLat Tompkins/Petros
Making excuses for Willingham. God … I am so happy we don’t have to go through that nightmare anymore.
It reminds me of a segment on the Simpsons
Homer finally does something good and Springfield gives him a parade. Marge tells Bart and Lisa that they can hold their heads high. As they look up, you can hear their necks crack, and they say things like, “Wow, I didn’t know my neck could go that high.” That pretty much sums my feelings. I actually look forward to Saturdays.
by bruinbabe2000 on Sep 6, 2008 2:33 PM PDT up reply actions
yeah
that looked bad. It can’t be fun to have a big man like Pitta land on your head like that. Really hope he is okay.
In other news, WVU finally got a field goal on the board, 10-3 ECU still up.
Huge choke
They did the same thing against us at the Rose Bowl last season too. Not as bad … but turned the ball over in crucial situations.
ECU
up 17-3 – If they go on and win this game, the sky is the limit for them. They could go undefeated.
Oh man
Just switched over to the ND game and saw the “mullet”
Clausen probably thinks he is playing “futbol”
Blake/Hale/Bosworth/Bosworth
Better be checking out Unga. It’s going to be a huge challenge not to let him get outside. Man he is a load.

Danny White's nephew
As a lifelong Dallas Cowboys fan, I adored Danny White as a child. I had no idea he had the weight of the world on his shoulders because he replaced Roger Staubach.

Just like Aaron Rogers
I’m really pulling for him because I got so mad reading stories aboud six-year-old kids in Green Bay telling him he sucked if didn’t complete a pass in practice. Plus, if he does good, it makes Mr. BB happy, which makes me happy.
by bruinbabe2000 on Sep 6, 2008 3:03 PM PDT up reply actions
Mr. BB=Rabid Cheesehead
His grandpa was a trainer for the Packers back in the 30s and 40s. My in-laws grew up in Green Bay, and Mr. BB was born in Milwaukee. They love their Packers, that’s for sure. Overall, very good people. I was able to wear a Troy Aikman jersey at Lambeau without getting too much ribbing (I only did that because he was announcing the game and my old man thought I would get on TV).
But these days, pro football is just entertainment to me. I will never love the Cowboys the way I did 15 years ago, but old habits are hard to break. Now UCLA football, that’s where I live and die.

back to the other games
Such a bummer for UDub, really not fair penalty at all. Refs should be ashamed of themselves for taking the game out of the players hands like that for no reason. We still have a great upset brewing in ECU WVA though, I’m there!
All right guys
Keep this place rocking – Gotta get ready to head out.
Once again … this has been fun.
sheesh
absolutely no tackling ability for West Virginia. They just bump into the ECU guys and hope they fall down, disgraceful.
UW just got shafted!
What an absolutely terrible call by the refs for unsportsmanlike conduct. The kid just scored a TD and celebrated with his team, and ya penalize him 15 yards?! That has got to be one of the worst calls I’ve seen.
utah radio
I’m listening to audio online for the BYU game, being streamed by KSL, the cougar network (because i’m watching the game on my slingbox and my phone speakers suck). Anyway… the commentators are totally trashing the Pac-10 refs for being so in favor of UW and other pac-10 schools. Yet, they conveniently brush aside that last awful call.
Next week's game is going to get really interesting
I am sure Neuheisel/Chow/Walker found lot of nuggets to work with from this game.
Mr. BB's observation
BYU’s o-line bullied UW’s d-line. That won’t happen next week. If our offense gets rolling, we’ll win.
For the first time in a long time, I have confidence in our coaching. Pinch me, I must be dreaming.

Tackling
seems to be the theme that keeps coming back to me in all these games. The Irish and the Mountaineers just can’t tackle. They are in position (mostly) but they just seem to throw their bodies in the general direction of the ball carrier. I hate that so much. Grab onto some cloth!!! I think that the Irish and the Mountaineers would be in at least slightly closer games if they could just tackle. Even if you aren’t the guy to take him down, slow him down so he doesn’t pick up as many yards. Guys hit, the carrier continues for 5 yards, if they just held on they could keep it to 2 extra yards or so.
Yeah
that became somewhat of an issue for us last week when our D started getting a little tired. They were fine once offense got some drives going in the second half. Goes to show how important it will be for Craft and co. to get it going early on next Sat.
Oh wow
What a play. Touchdown ole miss. He ran right…he ran left…ran back right and found a guy in the end zone.
Although they are reviewing the play
Wake forest better find a way to come back or it looks like there will be exactly 0 teams from the ACC ranked
Yikes
GA put up 56 on CMU thus far (game almost over). Not a good opponent, but still. A little tart about being jumped by the trOJans maybe?
Sooo
Wake Forest, the best team in the ACC is soon to be unranked. The “good” team from Virginia is getting spanked by ECU. Yet all the analysts point to a huge win over a “good” Virginia team as why usc jumped to #1? They beat a team that would get beat by the majority of the D-2 schools, and everyone gives the trojies all the credit. Its sickening. They may be good, but that win meant nothing.
wake forest at the 23 here comes the 37 yard field goal to win it
by lil eg not cs on Sep 6, 2008 3:59 PM PDT up reply actions
Hey now...
I take exception to the reference of the team from Virginia getting spanked. The good team from ‘Virginia’ got spanked last week (the next team from VA having unspeakable acts perpetrated against them by SC last week).
but
Oregon looks pretty scary good. They put it up on the Washington team we just watched to the tune of 44-10, and spanked Utah St today 66-24. They look much more impressive to me than u$c has so far, but we will see.
Should they really talk?
They just had refs give them the game and they are just writing us off? Wow, cocky.
Do they forget that
we beat them last year with a Dorrell coached team and should’ve beat them with Bethel-Thompson and Ossar running the show.
by lil eg not cs on Sep 6, 2008 4:08 PM PDT up reply actions
Virginia shuts out the mighty U. of Richmond
16-0. The ACC’s older, more highly paid KD gets his first win of the year, after so kindly serving as tackling dummies for the south central squad last weekend.
Richmond
is not even D1, right? Says a lot about why u$c clobbered a “good” virginia team
D-1aa (or "playoff subdivision" as it is now called)
And no, Virginia is not, and never was a “good” team in terms of the 2008 season. Those reports did give me a brief chuckle, I must say.
and yet
everyone things u$c is amazing for beating the snot out of them…whatever
To be fair
52-7 was a much greater margin than I had expected for that game – I thought that somewhere in the 38-14 to 42-10 range was a more realistic bottoming out for UVa. For a game that has been relentlessly been hyped by the Virginia athletic department for nearly 18 months, the team acted as if they rolled out of bed that morning only to hear the news of that day’s opponent.
As someone who got to watch entirely too much of that team over the past years, the program is not in a good state. the UVa team of last season was basically UCLA in 2005; if not for Chris Long and Mikael Simpson, that team wins 5-6 games and probably sheds Al Groh, finally.
Sympathy for the Huskies
The Huskies played a great game. All Locker did was throw the ball over his shoulder. Stupid, stupid call.
I wanted BYU to at least stay on the field and get well worn down for next week. They have a great Offense. I would not say as much for thier Defense. Locker picked them apart from time to time. The challenge is going to be for our Defense next week.
We can do it ! Go Bruins!
UDub Got Screwed Today
Just a horrible call by the ref slapping UW with a 15-yard penalty on that. Locker did nothing to deserve that. Christ, football is an emotional game and he wasn’t showing anybody up. Just a bad deal and what’s worse, it may cost Ty Willingham his job at the end of the year.
Currently watching a better than anticipated game between the ’Canes and the Gators. As much as I hate Miami for what they did to our national championship hopes back in ’98 I hope they can find a way to pull this one off.
Not sure what to think about next week. My hope is that BYU might be a little deflated from today’s “win” (given to them by the refs). I just hope that we’ll have most of our guys healed up and ready to go.
