Bye Saturday: College Football Open Thread

Our boys are not in action today:

But that doens't we are not watching any football today. If you are a UCLA football fan you have a must watch game in BYU v. Washington (starting around 12:10 PST on Fox Sports Net).

Other interesting actions include Marshall at Wisconsin, Miami at Florida, and West Va at East Carolina. You can track all the score via WWL here.

So if you are watching the games - especially the BYU-UDub game - thread it up and share all your notes and observations here in our bye week open game thread.

GO BRUINS.

Unfortunately I have to work today… but thank goodness for slingbox. I’m sure CRN will be breaking down the game too.

Slingbox

Did you know that it was invented by a UCLA alum, the brother of water polo coach Adam Krikorian.

i didn't know that

all of a sudden, i love my slingbox even more. i didn’t know that was possible. thanks bb!

Ohio St?

Ohio just scored a TD on a botched snap to go up 14-6 over #3 Ohio St. State looks absolutely terrible. No offensive or defensive line, poor tackling, mental errors. We can hope that this is look-ahead syndrome with u$c next week, but it just looks bad. The best chance of the season for the crosstown losers to get beat is not lookin so hot right now.

by sponkey21 on Sep 6, 2008 11:00 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah

Just tuned in. Wow!

They are playing without Beanie Wells though.

by Nestor on Sep 6, 2008 11:03 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Also

Michigan struggling against Miami (OH) in the Big House: only up 10-6.

Looks like Ohio is folding though

The Buckeyes look very vulnerable but Ohio does not seem to be able to do anything about it. Too many mistakes

by Rhapsode on Sep 6, 2008 11:48 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah

tOSU was looking ahead to next weekend. They still look very vulnerable heading into next Sat. They don’t have a lot of speed. Their QB is very average. Southern Cal should destroy them next weekend.

by Nestor on Sep 6, 2008 11:49 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

bummer too

I always look forward to a chance to see the trojies get spanked. A bit of a longshot right now by the looks of it. OSU has a habit of playing to the level of their competition, so hopefully they get a game plan together to give them a shot. I’ll never stop routing for my other favorite team (whoever is playing u$c)

by sponkey21 on Sep 6, 2008 12:08 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hopefully

Beanie Wells gets healthy … FAST.

by Nestor on Sep 6, 2008 12:10 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Looks like it will be a rout

tOSU is incredibly predictable on offense (hint: run between the tackles and occasionally pass deep) and SC has the bodies to clog up the line of scrimmage. I just don’t see them being able to put up very many points next weekend.

If they are going to beat SC, their defense will have to play a perfect game. But after watching how Ohio’s running game consistently found holes just by running out of the shotgun, I don’t see that happening. tOSU’s coaching staff doesn’t adjust to non traditional offenses and SC will take advantage of that.

My early prediction:
SC 42
tOSU 20

by Rhapsode on Sep 6, 2008 12:18 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

so much for SC's tough non-conf schedule

so even if SC blows out OSU, it’s not going to help their ratings too much. i’m not sure if that’s a good thing. I want them to be ranked high, so if we upset them, it’ll be all that much better.

by UCLAbruin920 on Sep 6, 2008 1:00 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

OSU

Didn’t look like a top-10 team (at least today).

by Nestor on Sep 6, 2008 1:01 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

certainly not

i suppose the question become whether they would be a top 10 with Wells?

Which game? BYU-Washington?

Have you checked the official sites?

by Nestor on Sep 6, 2008 12:25 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It almost seems unfair

how BYU has so many players who are a couple years older than their opponents. It is especially evident on their O-line. Washington rushed 4, blitzed 2 and still got zero pressure on Hall. Its gonna be a big test for Harwell, Price, and Walker’s game planning. BYU already up a TD after their first drive.

by sponkey21 on Sep 6, 2008 12:19 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Our LBs/safeties

Will have their work cut out for them too – this Pitta dude is lethal.

by Nestor on Sep 6, 2008 12:26 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Tied up

Locker just has some wheels. That BYU defense has a few gaps that you know Chow it taking note of. Keep it up Washington, give us some film to look at for both of our future opponents!

By the way

Papadakis cracks me up. He is a funny guy for a Trojie.

by Nestor on Sep 6, 2008 1:29 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

There were few games last year

When he was blunt/frank re. KD/UCLA. I really appreciated that. If he was a typical Trojan, he would have built up KD and sing his praises. He didn’t just called it like it is.

Just like Stewart Mandel – last few years – I have had to adjust my perspective on who are our friends, decent guys, and who are the culprits.

by Nestor on Sep 6, 2008 1:33 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He did go to Cal before transfering

My old man’s wrath is focused on his partner Barry (can’t think of his last name). Mushmouth, he calls him.

My brother loves to tell the story how about five years ago, our old man was watching us playing Arizona and an Arizona player practically twisted one of our guys’s head around with a facemask. Barry says, “Well let’s see if this is a 5 yard or a 15 yard penalty.” My old man yells, “Of course it’s a 15 yarder you dipshit! He practically took his head off!”

Notre Dame

in a scoreless tie with SDSU in the 2nd. Is it just me, or does anyone else cringe when they see the ND field. I just have that memory of sitting in the stands thinking we had a victory and watching it slip away in the final seconds. :(

I keep thinking what a CRN coached UCLA team would have done to them last two years.

Remember .. relentless optimism! :-)

by Nestor on Sep 6, 2008 1:38 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Right

it’s not frightening just a memory that will fade with this new coaching staff. Best in the country!

God - I'll Never Forget That

I was there. In all the college and pro games I’ve ever been to I’ve never seen a stadium erupt like Notre Dame Stadium did when Smardizja (sp?) caught that last pass and hopped into the end zone.

If you are having a hard time finding UW on Directv

It’s on channel 692….which was exactly the TWENTIETH Wash/BYU channel I checked.

My gosh, OSU SUCKS!! 28-0 in the second. I don’t “get” why so many people think Reilly is such a good coach. Thank the Lord we don’t have him.

by bornagainbruin on Sep 6, 2008 1:38 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think there was some interest in Riley this time around. I think he is a decent coach. Too bad he will never be able to recruit top talent to Corvallis.

UCLA to win 8 GAMES this season...

I was watching the halftime show of the BYU vs Washington game, and D’Marco Farr answered a question from a viewer regarding how many wins will UCLA get this year. His response was EIGHT!!! His rationale was our coaching staff. I’m not sure that I will go out on a limb and predict 8 wins yet myself, but its GREAT to see such positive media coverage in the Neuheisel era, just one week in!

GO BRUINS!

by rgalloucla on Sep 6, 2008 1:52 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

West Virginia just got robbed

our corners will have their work cut out for them. Hopefully the defensive tackles get good pressure, and the defensive line keep their hands in the air and we get some balls tipped. Maybe even a pick or two as a result.

ECU again

They are not giving up and are in the red zone again. WVU is going down if they dont get their act together. Maybe it would be good mojo for us. We get an upset when they do?

It reminds me of a segment on the Simpsons

Homer finally does something good and Springfield gives him a parade. Marge tells Bart and Lisa that they can hold their heads high. As they look up, you can hear their necks crack, and they say things like, “Wow, I didn’t know my neck could go that high.” That pretty much sums my feelings. I actually look forward to Saturdays.

Mr. BB=Rabid Cheesehead

His grandpa was a trainer for the Packers back in the 30s and 40s. My in-laws grew up in Green Bay, and Mr. BB was born in Milwaukee. They love their Packers, that’s for sure. Overall, very good people. I was able to wear a Troy Aikman jersey at Lambeau without getting too much ribbing (I only did that because he was announcing the game and my old man thought I would get on TV).

But these days, pro football is just entertainment to me. I will never love the Cowboys the way I did 15 years ago, but old habits are hard to break. Now UCLA football, that’s where I live and die.

Bummer

by BruinFanBaby on Sep 6, 2008 3:18 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

OMG

I am sick for UW – NOT RIGHT

by uclafan11 on Sep 6, 2008 3:18 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Refs

Ought to be ashamed of themselves.

IDIOTS.

by Nestor on Sep 6, 2008 3:18 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

They should be.

All he did was throw the ball over his shoulder and hug his teammates.

by BruinFanBaby on Sep 6, 2008 3:19 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

BTW

the previous comment was delivered deadpan, full sarcasm.

by bruin8uclap on Sep 6, 2008 3:19 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

really low kick angle though, not good at all

by sponkey21 on Sep 6, 2008 3:18 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

by uclafan11 on Sep 6, 2008 3:21 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Robbed

by uclafan11 on Sep 6, 2008 3:18 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Willingham

What do you say to your team after that – bullshit!

by uclafan11 on Sep 6, 2008 3:19 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

UW just got robbed

Extreme powertrip and bad call by the refs

by Tetelestai on Sep 6, 2008 3:20 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

ouch

what a horrible call… byu played well, but this should have been decided in OT

by sfatoo on Sep 6, 2008 3:20 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Oh wow

and offside penalty. That helps.

by BruinFanBaby on Sep 6, 2008 3:20 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yeah

they have a chance now refs.

by uclafan11 on Sep 6, 2008 3:21 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Wow

ECU up 17-3 driving inside WVU territory

9:05 left in the 3rd

by lil eg not cs on Sep 6, 2008 3:23 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not surprised by that

West Va defense hasn’t been that great.

BTW Mendenahall … I like him a lot. Classy guy.

by Nestor on Sep 6, 2008 3:24 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

back to the other games

Such a bummer for UDub, really not fair penalty at all. Refs should be ashamed of themselves for taking the game out of the players hands like that for no reason. We still have a great upset brewing in ECU WVA though, I’m there!

by sponkey21 on Sep 6, 2008 3:23 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

All right guys

Keep this place rocking – Gotta get ready to head out.

Once again … this has been fun.

by Nestor on Sep 6, 2008 3:25 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Notre Dame

is a joke. How in the world were they 21 point favorites?

by BruinFanBaby on Sep 6, 2008 3:26 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

sheesh

absolutely no tackling ability for West Virginia. They just bump into the ECU guys and hope they fall down, disgraceful.

by sponkey21 on Sep 6, 2008 3:26 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

UW just got shafted!

What an absolutely terrible call by the refs for unsportsmanlike conduct. The kid just scored a TD and celebrated with his team, and ya penalize him 15 yards?! That has got to be one of the worst calls I’ve seen.

by Kerckhoff405 on Sep 6, 2008 3:27 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

utah radio

I’m listening to audio online for the BYU game, being streamed by KSL, the cougar network (because i’m watching the game on my slingbox and my phone speakers suck). Anyway… the commentators are totally trashing the Pac-10 refs for being so in favor of UW and other pac-10 schools. Yet, they conveniently brush aside that last awful call.

Next week's game is going to get really interesting

I am sure Neuheisel/Chow/Walker found lot of nuggets to work with from this game.

by Nestor on Sep 6, 2008 3:29 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Mr. BB's observation

BYU’s o-line bullied UW’s d-line. That won’t happen next week. If our offense gets rolling, we’ll win.

For the first time in a long time, I have confidence in our coaching. Pinch me, I must be dreaming.

by bruinbabe2000 on Sep 6, 2008 3:32 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

In case anyone is interested

bonus coverage of Ole Miss/Wake on ABC. They left the OSU/PSU embarrasment.

by uclafan11 on Sep 6, 2008 3:28 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

overall

some good games on this Saturday. I think there have been more interesting games on this Saturday than there were last week.

by sponkey21 on Sep 6, 2008 3:35 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Definitely

and almost none of these games were good on paper. Fun day!

by uclafan11 on Sep 6, 2008 3:36 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Okay - SDSU is driving again

I really have to go but this is too addicting.

by Nestor on Sep 6, 2008 3:37 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

OMG

SDSU fumbled in the end zone!!!

by uclafan11 on Sep 6, 2008 3:40 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Tackling

seems to be the theme that keeps coming back to me in all these games. The Irish and the Mountaineers just can’t tackle. They are in position (mostly) but they just seem to throw their bodies in the general direction of the ball carrier. I hate that so much. Grab onto some cloth!!! I think that the Irish and the Mountaineers would be in at least slightly closer games if they could just tackle. Even if you aren’t the guy to take him down, slow him down so he doesn’t pick up as many yards. Guys hit, the carrier continues for 5 yards, if they just held on they could keep it to 2 extra yards or so.

by sponkey21 on Sep 6, 2008 3:39 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah

that became somewhat of an issue for us last week when our D started getting a little tired. They were fine once offense got some drives going in the second half. Goes to show how important it will be for Craft and co. to get it going early on next Sat.

by Nestor on Sep 6, 2008 3:41 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah

especially when you are tired and can’t stick him hard, just hold on. Keep it to a 4 yard gain instead of bumping into him and letting him rumble for 10.

by sponkey21 on Sep 6, 2008 3:42 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Exciting Day

If these games don’t let up, you are never gonna get out! lol!

by uclafan11 on Sep 6, 2008 3:44 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah

All right that’s it.

I am out.

by Nestor on Sep 6, 2008 3:45 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Oh wow

What a play. Touchdown ole miss. He ran right…he ran left…ran back right and found a guy in the end zone.

Although they are reviewing the play

by lil eg not cs on Sep 6, 2008 3:48 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yikes

GA put up 56 on CMU thus far (game almost over). Not a good opponent, but still. A little tart about being jumped by the trOJans maybe?
