Non-Revenue Sports Bruin Review and Calendar
Bumped. GO BRUINS. - N
Women's Soccer
I started my last review with the women's soccer team because they were the highest ranked team and that remains true this week as they check in at #2 in the country. The squad started the week with a game at Portland St. and the Bruins did to lesser teams what is expected of superior teams with a 7-0 rout. The Bruins then returned home for a match versus UC Irvine that they won 3-0 behind two goals from Lauren Cheney. That moves UCLA's record to 4-0 on the season and even more impressive is that the Bruins have given up only one goal in their four games. This week the Bruins head to Storrs, Connecticut for matches versus UConn and Brown.
Men's Soccer
The #14 men's team spent the weekend in Winston-Salem, North Carolina where they played Wake Forest and North Carolina. In their first match versus the top ranked and defending national champion Demon Deacons the Bruins were thoroughly outclassed and lost 3-0. In their second match versus #24 North Carolina, the Bruins played well enough to win as they created a number of chances that went unfinished. Their defense left much to be desired though and UCLA was forced to settle for a 1-1 draw. The Bruins get somewhat of a break this week as they only play one match and they get it at home, but it is against #6 Indiana.
Women's Volleyball
The fifth ranked Bruins had a relatively easy week. Despite playing three matches, all on the road, none were against a team even remotely in the same class. The Bruins started the week with a win at UC Riverside, then traveled to Reno where they beat Nevada and Seattle University all in three sets. The Bruins only play one match this week, a tilt at unranked Fullerton.
Cross Country
Both the men's and women's cross country team had their first meet of the season this weekend when they competed in the UC Irvine Invitational. The men won the meet as Marlon Patterson finished third overall for the Bruins and five UCLA runners finished in the top 10. In the women's meet UCLA finished second behind UC Irvine. They were led by freshman Katja Goldring who finished seventh overall in her first collegiate meet. Both the men and women are off until September 20 when they head to Hawaii for the Big Wave Classic.
Men's Water Polo
The water polo season is ready to begin as the fourth ranked Bruins head to Irvine to take on the #5 Anteaters this weekend in their season opener. The Bruins took 2 of 3 from the Anteaters last year. For a comprehensive season preview, check out this one from the official site. You can follow the construction progress of the Spieker Aquatic Center with the galleries from the official site. It should be a beauty.

I know they are the defending champs
but still, I was hoping for a better result than 3-0 for men’s soccer. I hope this isn’t a sign of another slow start under Salcedo.
