New Year's CFB Open Thread
Echoing bruinhoo congrats to Arizona, Cal, Oregon, and Oregon State for carrying the Pac-10 banner this bowl season. Here is to the Pac-10 finishing the bowl season 4-1:

At least for today in this corner of the interwebs: we are Penn State.
The real USC already took a beating against Iowa. Georgia-Michigan State going on right now. Other actions include Nebraska/Clemson at the Gator Bowl. Full WWL scoreboard can be found here.
Happy New Year ... this is our open football thread.

Michigan State not looking so great against Georgia
I didn’t think they would have much of a chance against Georgia (which has had an underachieving season given their pre-season hype).
Big-10 not looking so hot (Iowa being the only win) in this bowl season. Hopefully the trend reverses at the Rose Bowl.

Both games are now close
Georgia up 17-12
Clemson now only up 21-20.

Imagine if the Pac 10 had competant management
Then we could be watching another Pac 10 team outside of the Rose Bowl.

Yep
Can’t believe some of the matchups Big-10 teams and other conferences are getting. Cal should have been playing in the Holiday Bowl … and Oregon/Oregon State should be playing somewhere else today.
by Nestor on Jan 1, 2009 12:59 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Of course
We can thank SC for the Pac 10 losing our deal with the Cotton Bowl. If we had the Cotton Bowl with our #3 in the Holiday Bowl, it wouldn;t be so bad.

Hmm
What’s the back story? I didn’t hear this. During those KD years didn’t have a lot of time worrying about the conference stuff.
by Nestor on Jan 1, 2009 1:02 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
The Pac 10 had a 3 year deal with the Cotton Bowl
I believe it was for ‘95, ’96 and ’97. USC ended up in the Cotton Bowl the first year and the Cotton Bowl was giddy because they considered USC the marquee team of the conference. Bowl officials figured USC fans would show up all over Dallas and the ratings would be great, but the ratings were mediocre and USC barely sold half their allotment. After that game the Cotton Bowl began to buy into the "Pac 10 teams won’t travel to see their team" bit because they figured if the conference’s marquee team wouldn’t travel then who would? At that point the Cotton Bowl was ready to move onto a new conference for their new contract and eventually got the SEC for the game.
by Ryan Rosenblatt on Jan 1, 2009 1:15 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Hmm
We went to Cotton Bowl in 98. Was SC really considered the marquee Pac-10 team at that time? Although to be fair … we didn’t travel all so well in 1998 IIRC.

What I was always amazed at
is that San Francisco can’t put together a great bowl game. They have the Emerald Bowl, but it’s a bottom tier bowl. San Francisco is one of the country’s premier cities and I think they could get a lot of people to travel there for a game if they matched a few good teams. At worst they should be able to put together a New Years Eve game with a couple 3rd place teams.
by Ryan Rosenblatt on Jan 1, 2009 1:22 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
The Emerald Bowl
The config at Giant’s stadium looks horrible. For them to make it a top tier bowl they need to open up either Candlestick or the Oakland Mosoleum.
by Nestor on Jan 1, 2009 1:25 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree
but even the Emerald Bowl is only 5 years old or so. Why did it take so long for such a great city to get a bowl? Neither Candlestick nor the Coliseum are very good stadiums, but if all the festivities take place in San Francisco I don’t think anyone would complain. If done right, San Francisco could put together a fabulous bowl.
by Ryan Rosenblatt on Jan 1, 2009 1:30 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Stadium issues, imo
Agreed that the city should be able to put together a compelling bowl event, and the weather – while not as good as traditional socal/southern bowl hosts – is perfectly suitable for a January 1 game.
The stadium issue is a rather big deal though; the Oakland and San Francisco city governments do not play very well together, so coordinating a bowl in which all the events take place in SF, and a game at the Coliseum would not be an easy feat. Candlestick Park honestly lives down to its ‘worst NFL stadium’ reputation; not the way for SF to put its best foot forward. It did far outclass the historic second option for such a game, the old Stanford Stadium (easily the worst athletic venue I have attended a game at). The new stadium is actually a good place to watch a football game, though capacity may be a bit low to establish an upper-tier game.
by bruinhoo on Jan 1, 2009 2:29 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Or Cal's Memorial Stadium?
I know they just got clearance to go ahead with their renovations, but I’m not sure how extensive those renovations will be.
by Ryan Rosenblatt on Jan 1, 2009 2:32 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
The new stadium is fine, if on the small side
For a new game, capacity would likely not be an issue (it holds several thousand more than ATT park regardless), though for a successful, higher profile bowl, it could be a bit small.
Aside from location, a far better venue than PacBell/ATT park.
by bruinhoo on Jan 1, 2009 2:40 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
So is that up to the Pac-10?
to lobby Stanford in hosting a bowl game?
by Nestor on Jan 1, 2009 2:43 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
good question
not sure what the procedure would be, whether Stanford needs to be on point, or whether a separate committee would organize the game, and rent the stadium for the game.

Last Night - PSU Official New Years Eve Party
I partied with the Penn St fans up at Universal Studios last night. They closed the park at 8 PM and from about 8:30 until 2 AM it was “Happy Valley Above the Valley”. Several PSU fans asked me what I thought of USC. I declared that their “Football Monopoly is Officially Over” with a PSU win tomorrow. Which drew a laugh from twenty or so drunk PSU fans who had no clue why I chose those words. The band, cheerleaders, alumni booster foundation and a couple of coaches were in attendance but understandably no players. At one point I had about 3 or 4 of them doing an 8 clap at a few stray USC fans in attendance.
All in all it got me so fired up about today’s game. Penn State did not come all the way out here to lose. That’s for sure.
I only hope the Bruins are playing in a BCS game one day because after last night I now understand why college football fans travel with their team.

Me and a few friends were in Hollywood last night before we headed to a party
and we met a dozen or so Penn St. students. We ended up bringing them to the party with us and they were some really cool people. They and a few USC students who were there played a few drinking games and the Nittany Lions came out on top. Hopefully the same is true today.

I wondered this a few weeks ago too
Found the answer here: http://www.psu.edu/dept/ur/about/images/nittany.html
Apparently the Nittany Valley is a region in Pennsylvania, and the Nittany Lion is a made-up kind of lion that is supposed to be extra fierce.

I certainly don’t know as much about marching bands as some of you BN’ers, but I thought it was not cool that all they played (for TV, anyway) was their fight song. The Penn State band, on the other hand, was most impressive in both their playing and their formation around the corner onto Colorado.

I think they were just called the Lions originally
but added the Nittany as homage to their geographic location. I’m not 100% sure about that one, but I remember something along those lines. I know Nittany comes from the mountain for sure, but how the Nittany and lion got added together I’m a little fuzzy about.

Whether the players are taking the coaching seriously, or a deficiency in coaching, Kenny seemingly needs to work with those LB’s a bit differently.

I think
His strength has been recruiting since he joined that program. But here is the catch. He has done well while UCLA was being led by KD (kind of like Montgomery, Olsons of the world fattening up on recruiting while you know who was in charge prior to Howland). Now that Kenny is having to work for it instead of automatically sweeping in recruits from the Dorrell days, he is kind of losing it.
The way he lost his professional composure last few days will cost him dearly.

You’re bringing the blitz, yet you’re dropping into a 3 deep coverage so they can beat you underneath. If you’re going to bring the blitz, you have to have faith they can get to the QB and not worry about getting beat deep. If they get to the QB, the receivers won’t have time to get deep.

Bottom Line: PSU Is Not Playing a BCS Caliber Game
But, which Big 10 team would play better? I like the Big 10 tie in — tradition and all, and I can remember a run when they dominated this game, including our 2 horrible losses to Wisconsin.

by Class of 66 on Jan 1, 2009 4:02 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
The losses to Wisconsin
I went to both of those games. Our team was fairly disinterested in the first game as we were all hoping for OSU (which choked like a classic John Cooper squad). The second time around we were playing as a demoralized team following December 5, 1998.
by Nestor on Jan 1, 2009 4:04 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Even so
we had a chance late in that 1999 game, but then there was the pick 6 by Jamar Fletcher that still haunts me. I was at the game and yelling “don’t throw it, don’t throw it,” but next thing I knew Fletcher was going the other way.
I just can’t wait for a new UCLA Rose Bowl memory. Give it another couple years and I’ll have it.
by Ryan Rosenblatt on Jan 1, 2009 4:07 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Actually
the 94 Rose Bowl was even more painful. All Wayne Cook had to do was spike the freaking ball and we would have had a sure fire shot with JJ to go for the winning TD. Agh.

He deleted it thankfully
I saved his newsflash:
UCLA and Ken Norton JR
Walker is headed to New Mexico, so the D coordinator spot is open. Norton would look like the leading guy, but indicates that a return to Westwood isn’t likely. Which is most likely because of the whole recruitment issue. Ken Norton is accusing Rick Neuheisel and his staff of telling recruits that if Dwayne Walker leaves that Norton will take over as defensive coordinator for UCLA. It’s pretty easy to believe that Neuheisel would do such a thing, as his recruiting issues at Colorado indicate so.
I really hope that Ken Norton hasn’t ruled out returning to UCLA just yet. Norton would do wonders for the program. He is a NCAA All-American, a three time super bowl champion, and a three-time pro bowl player. A man with his credentials would be great for recruiting, where the war between UCLA and USC rages on.
Yes, that’s the information he was sharing on BN. He was advised to delete it because it added nothing to the ongoing discussions on the same topic in multiple threads.

That took 20 seconds
Among those signing up were three 300-pound Trojans linemen, including one with academic troubles at the university. There was also the beefy linebacker son of television’s "Incredible Hulk" and a succession of strapping athletes, among them millionaire ex-USC receiver Keary Colbert of the Carolina Panthers.
And the above is all it takes to implicate their football players for not going to class. Specific names is simply your moving goalpost, so don’t even try and bring that weaksauce in here.

Honestly,
If you checked, you would find that Senora Ross’s class was not populated with the women’s Lacrosse team, either. You would find that this was, at best, an institutionalized, off-campus “program” specifically designed to keep USC football players academically eligible to play without requiring that they make any actual academic progress whatsoever. You might wonder to yourself how something this blatently long term and violative of NCAA provisions was not smartly sanctioned. You would definitely question whether this depth of outright fraud could exist without tremdous outcry and publicity at any other Division I football powerhouse.

Keyshawn clearly doesn't play much attention to recruiting
SC has built their program around SoCal players. The out of state guys have been nice add ons, but the program is built on local players. SC has gotten their pick of all the local players for years. Hopefully CRN can continue to chip away at that dominance until we’re on equal footing and getting our share of the local guys, but any team who dominates SoCal will win a lot of games. It’s okay Keyshawn, keep talking though.

The problem in college
is what to do about the hits that aren’t worthy of suspension or getting thrown out, but are worse than just the penalty. Does the NCAA need to implore referees to throw players out more often to send a message? I don’t know what the remedy is, but in the college game there isn’t a fine to send a message and they need something because there are more and more dangerous hits in the college game every year.

The monopoly is not over
I know the objective of the ad and didn’t have a big issue with it, but I’ve seen Bruin fans (not so much on BN) who truly believe the monopoly is not over. Seeing how fast and strong USC is, you can tell we have a long ways to go. We’re a lot closer now then we were a year ago, but we’re still a ways off.
I’ve seen people who try to downplay the importance of recruiting and claim that games are won between the lines and not in recruiting, but the fact is we need to step up the recruiting. We don’t have the athletes that USC does and until we start getting some, USC will still be the king of the Pac 10. We’ve started to make progress with players like Presley and guys like Carroll, Te’o and Phillipp will definitely help if we can land them, but it’s going to take time.
Those who are claiming the monopoly is over are dead wrong. I think we’re going to get there. With the coaching job we saw this season plus the closing ability of CRN and Chow reportedly lighting up the recruiting trail we’ve got a shot to take USC down and start getting ourselves into Rose Bowls consistently, but I remind everyone that it’s going to take time and the first thing we have to do is get top notch athletes in the program. Regardless of our thoughts on USC’s program and the coaching of PSU today (or lack thereof), USC was the dominant teams and had the far superior athletes. Those are the types of athletes we need and it’s going to take multiple recruiting classes before we can load up our program with those kinds of guys. Be patient.

I Think
the monopoly, like a kingdom, is beginning its decline…showing some cracks—there are some glimpses at “the man behind the curtain,” if you will. The sickly sweet stench of death is on the monoploy’s breath.
Rome was not built, and neither did it fall, in one day.
