Echoing bruinhoo congrats to Arizona, Cal, Oregon, and Oregon State for carrying the Pac-10 banner this bowl season. Here is to the Pac-10 finishing the bowl season 4-1:

At least for today in this corner of the interwebs: we are Penn State.
The real USC already took a beating against Iowa. Georgia-Michigan State going on right now. Other actions include Nebraska/Clemson at the Gator Bowl. Full WWL scoreboard can be found here.
Happy New Year ... this is our open football thread.

Michigan State not looking so great against Georgia
I didn’t think they would have much of a chance against Georgia (which has had an underachieving season given their pre-season hype).
Big-10 not looking so hot (Iowa being the only win) in this bowl season. Hopefully the trend reverses at the Rose Bowl.
Imagine if the Pac 10 had competant management
Then we could be watching another Pac 10 team outside of the Rose Bowl.

Yep
Can’t believe some of the matchups Big-10 teams and other conferences are getting. Cal should have been playing in the Holiday Bowl … and Oregon/Oregon State should be playing somewhere else today.
Of course
We can thank SC for the Pac 10 losing our deal with the Cotton Bowl. If we had the Cotton Bowl with our #3 in the Holiday Bowl, it wouldn;t be so bad.
by Ryan Rosenblatt on Jan 1, 2009 1:02 PM PST up reply actions
Hmm
What’s the back story? I didn’t hear this. During those KD years didn’t have a lot of time worrying about the conference stuff.
The Pac 10 had a 3 year deal with the Cotton Bowl
I believe it was for ‘95, ’96 and ’97. USC ended up in the Cotton Bowl the first year and the Cotton Bowl was giddy because they considered USC the marquee team of the conference. Bowl officials figured USC fans would show up all over Dallas and the ratings would be great, but the ratings were mediocre and USC barely sold half their allotment. After that game the Cotton Bowl began to buy into the "Pac 10 teams won’t travel to see their team" bit because they figured if the conference’s marquee team wouldn’t travel then who would? At that point the Cotton Bowl was ready to move onto a new conference for their new contract and eventually got the SEC for the game.
by Ryan Rosenblatt on Jan 1, 2009 1:15 PM PST up reply actions
Hmm
We went to Cotton Bowl in 98. Was SC really considered the marquee Pac-10 team at that time? Although to be fair … we didn’t travel all so well in 1998 IIRC.
What I was always amazed at
is that San Francisco can’t put together a great bowl game. They have the Emerald Bowl, but it’s a bottom tier bowl. San Francisco is one of the country’s premier cities and I think they could get a lot of people to travel there for a game if they matched a few good teams. At worst they should be able to put together a New Years Eve game with a couple 3rd place teams.
by Ryan Rosenblatt on Jan 1, 2009 1:22 PM PST up reply actions
The Emerald Bowl
The config at Giant’s stadium looks horrible. For them to make it a top tier bowl they need to open up either Candlestick or the Oakland Mosoleum.
I agree
but even the Emerald Bowl is only 5 years old or so. Why did it take so long for such a great city to get a bowl? Neither Candlestick nor the Coliseum are very good stadiums, but if all the festivities take place in San Francisco I don’t think anyone would complain. If done right, San Francisco could put together a fabulous bowl.
by Ryan Rosenblatt on Jan 1, 2009 1:30 PM PST up reply actions
Stadium issues, imo
Agreed that the city should be able to put together a compelling bowl event, and the weather – while not as good as traditional socal/southern bowl hosts – is perfectly suitable for a January 1 game.
The stadium issue is a rather big deal though; the Oakland and San Francisco city governments do not play very well together, so coordinating a bowl in which all the events take place in SF, and a game at the Coliseum would not be an easy feat. Candlestick Park honestly lives down to its ‘worst NFL stadium’ reputation; not the way for SF to put its best foot forward. It did far outclass the historic second option for such a game, the old Stanford Stadium (easily the worst athletic venue I have attended a game at). The new stadium is actually a good place to watch a football game, though capacity may be a bit low to establish an upper-tier game.
Or Cal's Memorial Stadium?
I know they just got clearance to go ahead with their renovations, but I’m not sure how extensive those renovations will be.
by Ryan Rosenblatt on Jan 1, 2009 2:32 PM PST up reply actions
The new stadium is fine, if on the small side
For a new game, capacity would likely not be an issue (it holds several thousand more than ATT park regardless), though for a successful, higher profile bowl, it could be a bit small.
Aside from location, a far better venue than PacBell/ATT park.
good question
not sure what the procedure would be, whether Stanford needs to be on point, or whether a separate committee would organize the game, and rent the stadium for the game.
One thing for sure ...
Lack of imagination and creativity on the part of the geniuses running the conference.
Nebbie now takes the lead 23-21
after a blocked punt. BTW I still don’t get why Clemson fired Tommy if they were only going to promote the interim HC to permanent status.
Georgia trying to put the game out of reach.
Last Night - PSU Official New Years Eve Party
I partied with the Penn St fans up at Universal Studios last night. They closed the park at 8 PM and from about 8:30 until 2 AM it was “Happy Valley Above the Valley”. Several PSU fans asked me what I thought of USC. I declared that their “Football Monopoly is Officially Over” with a PSU win tomorrow. Which drew a laugh from twenty or so drunk PSU fans who had no clue why I chose those words. The band, cheerleaders, alumni booster foundation and a couple of coaches were in attendance but understandably no players. At one point I had about 3 or 4 of them doing an 8 clap at a few stray USC fans in attendance.
All in all it got me so fired up about today’s game. Penn State did not come all the way out here to lose. That’s for sure.
I only hope the Bruins are playing in a BCS game one day because after last night I now understand why college football fans travel with their team.
college football roadies are awesome
But as Rye mentioned above Pac-10 needs to come up with better bowl setups.
Me and a few friends were in Hollywood last night before we headed to a party
and we met a dozen or so Penn St. students. We ended up bringing them to the party with us and they were some really cool people. They and a few USC students who were there played a few drinking games and the Nittany Lions came out on top. Hopefully the same is true today.

Give us a couple years
and it will really be a home game, but for us. I can’t wait to see the Rose Bowl filled with true blue on New Years again. Hopefully then Bruin fans won’t sell out and let the opposing team pack the place either.

Yes...
The game hasn’t even started yet, and their ignorance is already spewing forth.

What is a Nittany Lion?
Anybody know the difference between a Nittany Lion and a regular lion? Anyway, it’s a no brainer to cheer for PSU. You gotta love JoePa beating Petey on nat’l TV.
I wondered this a few weeks ago too
Found the answer here: http://www.psu.edu/dept/ur/about/images/nittany.html
Apparently the Nittany Valley is a region in Pennsylvania, and the Nittany Lion is a made-up kind of lion that is supposed to be extra fierce.
I Just Wanted To Say,
I certainly don’t know as much about marching bands as some of you BN’ers, but I thought it was not cool that all they played (for TV, anyway) was their fight song. The Penn State band, on the other hand, was most impressive in both their playing and their formation around the corner onto Colorado.
Love My Bruins
(I Love Parades...Since I Was Little,
and the Rose Parade has always been my favorite.)
I’m so excited that soon, it will be the Bruins marching, and our cheerleaders on a float.
Love My Bruins
I wish that my TV had a mute button to block out the SUC band
They play that effing song after every damn play, it makes me want to puke
don't forget the sideline reporter
seemed miffed that an 82 yr old guy recovering from hip replacement surgery would coach from the press box, rather than walk around for 4 hours where she would have access.
I don't think a sideline reporter has ever been useful
Their halfitme interviews don’t ever tell us anything and they always take up air time with ridiculous comments that have nothing to do with the game. The only thing they’re good for is injury updates and interviewing CRN during a SC game.

Someone asked why Penn St. is the Nittany Lions
It’s because the university sits at the foot of Nittany Mountain.
I think they were just called the Lions originally
but added the Nittany as homage to their geographic location. I’m not 100% sure about that one, but I remember something along those lines. I know Nittany comes from the mountain for sure, but how the Nittany and lion got added together I’m a little fuzzy about.

fans
I love the fans who dress up as Paterno…wonder if they sell those costumes in the PSU student store
Considering
they even sell a Joe Pa’s favorite flavor ice cream in their store, I wouldn’t bet against it.
touchdown
watching a quarterback run through the USC defense on a sunny day at the rose bowl reminds me of pat cowan
What great blocking on that drive
The provided time for the pass, got downfield on the screen and opened up room for Clark on the draw. The o-line was incredible there.
Another thing
The SuC LBers are incredibly talented but they don’t look very well coached in terms of fundamentals. They were just aiming for missile hits without wrapping up the PSU guys.
one of the critiques of Kenny that I have heard
Whether the players are taking the coaching seriously, or a deficiency in coaching, Kenny seemingly needs to work with those LB’s a bit differently.
I think
His strength has been recruiting since he joined that program. But here is the catch. He has done well while UCLA was being led by KD (kind of like Montgomery, Olsons of the world fattening up on recruiting while you know who was in charge prior to Howland). Now that Kenny is having to work for it instead of automatically sweeping in recruits from the Dorrell days, he is kind of losing it.
The way he lost his professional composure last few days will cost him dearly.
On the next defensive series
PSU will have to come with some blitzes and get Sanchez’s uniform dirty. They need to rattle him; they can’t allow him to sit back and pick them apart like he has in the last two drives.
Exactly.
He loses his composure and timing when he gets planted a few times. Knock the wind out of him.
Love My Bruins
You've got a big QB
Let him sneak it. I’ve always felt the QB sneak is under-utilized in those types of situations.

Bad (good) paint job on u$c endzone

Ohio State
Now I am starting to wonder why these guys are in a BCS bowl game? This is a freaking joke.
Wow, their D just isn't showing up.
As weak as we were, and with all the problems we faced on both sides of the ball, we played sc tougher.
And, Oregon State?
Maybe the Big 10 isn’t all that tough.
sjh
Stupid playcalling by the PSU DC
You’re bringing the blitz, yet you’re dropping into a 3 deep coverage so they can beat you underneath. If you’re going to bring the blitz, you have to have faith they can get to the QB and not worry about getting beat deep. If they get to the QB, the receivers won’t have time to get deep.
They're getting killed
yet haven’t attempted anything new schematically.

Gee
I wonder who was in the middle of that huddle with the up and down?
Think about it
How our guys were in the game. If we didn’t have that stupid penalty on the punt … and we didn’t have a Darryl Clark running our offense.
As you said -- we had coaches on the sidelines
Realizing the talent differential, the fact we played better than PSu says a lot about our coaches.
This sc team is not that good. OSU, anyone?
PSU is stinking up the place.
sjh
Well
at least if we win 5-5 some people will reevaluate PAC-10 football. Although I’d prefer to win 4-5 and it will be reevaluated anyways …
Turn out the lights
I’m too sick. Can’t watch the Troy boys on New year’s day in Our House. JoPa can’t end the Rose Bowl monopoly today.
To recap
USC is only a couple wins from being the bestest team evar! as well as finding a cure for cancer and solving the crisis in the Middle East.
Wow, 30-7 in the first half.
It’s over, sucks, but you don’t go down 23 to USC, with their semi-legal talent, and win.

The thing is
His influence seems to be somewhat ineffective from that coach’s box. They don’t have dominant leadership/vision on their sidelines and it shows.
Herbstreit just called SC a championship team
They’re very, very good, but last I checked the championship game is in 7 days.
One reason
Pimp ABC/ESPN. The championship game is on Fox. These guys have all the incentive to blow up the importance of this game.
They Had Better
put a stop to that sword-planting shit on OUR field. I swear to God, it is completely abhorrent to allow that.
Love My Bruins
I was going to post something this morning
that we either mine the field or have someone there to run out and break the dam sword, but I thought it was in bad taste to do so.
I think we should bring a Bruin to their next home game and have it relieve itself on their field and then eat their horse.
sjh
I Can't Go That Far, Myself
because I’m a horse lover. No problem with a big burly Bruin chewing up Tommy Trojie, though, or at least making him a sword swallower.
I find it inteloerable. Let them plant that thing on their own field, but not anybody else’s.

Rose Bowl Committee needs to terminate Big 10
The Rose Bowl needs to end the contractual relationship with the Sacrificial 10. They are the lamest, weakest conference in America. I would have preferred to see Utah or Boise State play the cross-town thugs.

a much improved D and an offense that takes advantage of stupidity — and you can’t find a dumber team than sc.
sjh
mute!
this trOJan band is making my ears bleed…..pushing mute button now…
Bottom Line: PSU Is Not Playing a BCS Caliber Game
But, which Big 10 team would play better? I like the Big 10 tie in — tradition and all, and I can remember a run when they dominated this game, including our 2 horrible losses to Wisconsin.
sjh
The losses to Wisconsin
I went to both of those games. Our team was fairly disinterested in the first game as we were all hoping for OSU (which choked like a classic John Cooper squad). The second time around we were playing as a demoralized team following December 5, 1998.
Even so
we had a chance late in that 1999 game, but then there was the pick 6 by Jamar Fletcher that still haunts me. I was at the game and yelling “don’t throw it, don’t throw it,” but next thing I knew Fletcher was going the other way.
I just can’t wait for a new UCLA Rose Bowl memory. Give it another couple years and I’ll have it.
by Ryan Rosenblatt on Jan 1, 2009 4:07 PM PST up reply actions
Actually
the 94 Rose Bowl was even more painful. All Wayne Cook had to do was spike the freaking ball and we would have had a sure fire shot with JJ to go for the winning TD. Agh.
I was at both of those games.
I was at the 94 game too
but I was too young to be haunted by it. We don’t have a Rose Bowl win in my lifetime. I think it’s time to change that.

Question?
Does everybody know why UCLA would be first in the Pac-10 ad other than we are the best in the west? It seems to be in a random order. And, the incompetent Pac 10 hasnt made a new one in years.
Penn State still can't stop anything
The definition of stupidity is doing the exact same thing over and over and expecting different results.
Terry Bowden back into coaching
Was hired this week by D-II North Alabama.

He deleted it thankfully
I saved his newsflash:
UCLA and Ken Norton JR
Walker is headed to New Mexico, so the D coordinator spot is open. Norton would look like the leading guy, but indicates that a return to Westwood isn’t likely. Which is most likely because of the whole recruitment issue. Ken Norton is accusing Rick Neuheisel and his staff of telling recruits that if Dwayne Walker leaves that Norton will take over as defensive coordinator for UCLA. It’s pretty easy to believe that Neuheisel would do such a thing, as his recruiting issues at Colorado indicate so.
I really hope that Ken Norton hasn’t ruled out returning to UCLA just yet. Norton would do wonders for the program. He is a NCAA All-American, a three time super bowl champion, and a three-time pro bowl player. A man with his credentials would be great for recruiting, where the war between UCLA and USC rages on.
Yes, that’s the information he was sharing on BN. He was advised to delete it because it added nothing to the ongoing discussions on the same topic in multiple threads.
There Is Weirdness
It was either about the sword-planting, to which I am vehemently opposed, or baking, which I whole-heartedly support.

Alas,
I have no real football advice to the Nittany Lions, other than to use their big QB more, and to make it all about planting Sanchez in the dirt right now.

PSU just gave JoePa a 3 year extension
Now I think JoePa is a living legend. He is an amazing coach but I wonder what a PSU fan thinks about the situation where the HC seems detached as he is absent from the sidelines and not even around at the locker room during half time. Interesting.
He Was Down.
Good grief. What are these guys going to do when the SUC lovefest is over?
Love My Bruins
I am going to bet
SuC will hold them here as PSU will go for some kind of run/sneak in two successive tries.
Well
I was wrong thankfully. Hopefully they will prove me to be wrong as I think they still have no shot in coming back in this game.
More cover 3
More points for USC. They’re killing the same seams of the cover 3, yet the PSU DC won’t go away from it. I feel bad for PSU fans because their DC is the presumed successor to Joe Pa.

That took 20 seconds
Among those signing up were three 300-pound Trojans linemen, including one with academic troubles at the university. There was also the beefy linebacker son of television’s "Incredible Hulk" and a succession of strapping athletes, among them millionaire ex-USC receiver Keary Colbert of the Carolina Panthers.

Honestly,
If you checked, you would find that Senora Ross’s class was not populated with the women’s Lacrosse team, either. You would find that this was, at best, an institutionalized, off-campus “program” specifically designed to keep USC football players academically eligible to play without requiring that they make any actual academic progress whatsoever. You might wonder to yourself how something this blatently long term and violative of NCAA provisions was not smartly sanctioned. You would definitely question whether this depth of outright fraud could exist without tremdous outcry and publicity at any other Division I football powerhouse.

as I stated above......
I did look into the allegation (this is the first I had ever heard of it) and the first link I went to I found nothing specific and stated as such……

Keyshawn clearly doesn't play much attention to recruiting
SC has built their program around SoCal players. The out of state guys have been nice add ons, but the program is built on local players. SC has gotten their pick of all the local players for years. Hopefully CRN can continue to chip away at that dominance until we’re on equal footing and getting our share of the local guys, but any team who dominates SoCal will win a lot of games. It’s okay Keyshawn, keep talking though.
Humanitarian???
Is it going to take a spinal cord injury to make Pete stop teaching and condoning leading with the helmet? ABC is also enabling this dangerous behavior…
The problem in college
is what to do about the hits that aren’t worthy of suspension or getting thrown out, but are worse than just the penalty. Does the NCAA need to implore referees to throw players out more often to send a message? I don’t know what the remedy is, but in the college game there isn’t a fine to send a message and they need something because there are more and more dangerous hits in the college game every year.

And a coach with morals
will discipline players who laugh and give high fives after being penalized for spearing…
They went for the field goal, they kicked it deep, they're running the ball
They’ve given up.

It's only a 2 score game
I don’t think Penn St. will make the comeback, but it’s still only a 2 score game. Weirder things have happened…
3 minutes to go
and PSU will have the ball. I still don’t think it’ll happen, but as I said, weirder things have happened…
The monopoly is not over
I know the objective of the ad and didn’t have a big issue with it, but I’ve seen Bruin fans (not so much on BN) who truly believe the monopoly is not over. Seeing how fast and strong USC is, you can tell we have a long ways to go. We’re a lot closer now then we were a year ago, but we’re still a ways off.
I’ve seen people who try to downplay the importance of recruiting and claim that games are won between the lines and not in recruiting, but the fact is we need to step up the recruiting. We don’t have the athletes that USC does and until we start getting some, USC will still be the king of the Pac 10. We’ve started to make progress with players like Presley and guys like Carroll, Te’o and Phillipp will definitely help if we can land them, but it’s going to take time.
Those who are claiming the monopoly is over are dead wrong. I think we’re going to get there. With the coaching job we saw this season plus the closing ability of CRN and Chow reportedly lighting up the recruiting trail we’ve got a shot to take USC down and start getting ourselves into Rose Bowls consistently, but I remind everyone that it’s going to take time and the first thing we have to do is get top notch athletes in the program. Regardless of our thoughts on USC’s program and the coaching of PSU today (or lack thereof), USC was the dominant teams and had the far superior athletes. Those are the types of athletes we need and it’s going to take multiple recruiting classes before we can load up our program with those kinds of guys. Be patient.

I Think
the monopoly, like a kingdom, is beginning its decline…showing some cracks—there are some glimpses at “the man behind the curtain,” if you will. The sickly sweet stench of death is on the monoploy’s breath.
Rome was not built, and neither did it fall, in one day.

Yup
We’re working at it and making progress, but as I said, we need to show patience.

Agree on all points
My only add is that I sense a momentum in our program (in the department of recruiting) I haven’t sensed in a while. We will see how next 2-3 years shake out.
I agree
USC is still out-recruiting us, but if you look at recruits’ comments as well as the actions of a few players like Presley, we’re a viable option for the best players in SoCal for the first time in a while. What people tend to forget though is it’s not just about getting 4 of CRN’s classes in. We’ll be better then, but we’ll see how good this program can really be when CRN has 6 and 7 of his own classes in and not only are they his players, but the young guys are practicing against CRN’s players. I think people tend to underestimate how much more players develop when the rest of the players in the program are elite and you can compete with them every day on the practice field and the weight room.

Thoughts on Recruiting
We will never be competitive with sc for all of the people they recruit because we cannot take many of them into school.
The one’s we are competing for and landing sound like the kind of people (as simply opposed to players) we want.
IMHO, one reason they cannot maintain their recruiting edge is that they have so many players stacked up that many will not get playing time. I’m not talking about selfish people who demand to play, but if you are 5 deep at QB or running back — someone is not going to play. And, these kids rightfully want to play.
As much as I understand the need to recruit well, I also subscribe to the mantra that we have to win on the field to end the monopoly. This year, we took a step by beating them up and turning them into whiny wimps. But, we really need to win on the field to make our statement. Even if they have superior talent, that victory is not far off. We have intangibles. Give us a somewhat healthy team and a consistent O line and QB — which we can have next year, and we may end the monopoly, the right way.
sjh
Don't forget the single most important reason why justsc out-recruits us.
They cheat. They can tell a player that he will have a generous allowance, plus all the clothes, TV’s, etc., that he can want. All the player has to do is to keep his mouth shut and his wallet open. We can’t match that, and the players know it. Until someone actually does something to stop them, they will keep on doing it, and why shouldn’t they keep on doing it. bu$hgate and Jarrett and all the rest of that stuff was front page news (except of course for the fishwrap), but all justsc has to do is ignore it as they have done and there are no consequences.
Happy New Year!!
Sorry I didn’t get to participate in this thread yesterday but had company over to watch those Scumbags play in our house during the Rose Bowl game. Man, that was TOUGH to watch those dirtbags do all that dancing sh** in our house – I was REALLY P.O.’d about that.
But you know what? Better days are ahead for CRN and our Bruins and I don’t think it’ll be long before we’re back in the mix for big bowl games.
Just wanted to extend a Happy New Year wish to all of my brothers and sisters here at BN.
