You might think me crazy

But I prefer the BCS to a Playoff system. One of the great things about college football is the “king of the hill” nature of competition that leaves a team on the brink of elimination for losing one game. Another great aspect is that when a top seed goes down, another moves up and all of a sudden those team’s games become the center of the CF universe. For example, nobody circled Texas Tech vs Oklahoma State as a red letter game before the season began. After Texas Tech beat Texas, however, it was a whole new game.

I think of the NFL, and recent Super Bowl winners like the Steelers who were wild card teams with barely a reason to be in the playoffs, much less to be considered the best team in football. Playoffs don’t determine the best team in the country, merely the hottest team at the end of the season.

Finally, every college football season is different. This year we had 6 one loss teams and 1 undefeated team (Utah). But in previous years, we have seen 3 undefeated teams and a number of 1 loss teams. How does a playoff sort through that madness with any more precision that the current ranking system? A playoff of the 6 major conference champions plus two at large schools this year would have left Alabama, Texas, and Texas Tech outside looking in. But, if you were to take the 8 highest ranked teams regardless of conference standing (which would have been the best scenario this year) then, how do you justify leaving out conference champions like Virginia Tech and Boston College, or Boise State.

I’m sure many will disagree, but that’s how I see it.

My biggest problem with the current system

Is that the rankings have too much influence. That and the fact that every year it seems there is some kind of controversy (this year, Texas/Oklahoma) tells me the system doesn’t work.

Of course, I don’t have a better solution, so I can’t complain too much.

I agree

they start rankings in October, after you have seen people play a few games. That would make the system much better.
