The monopoly is over
Really, I think it is. We're competing for recruits as we should because the four letters UCLA recruit themselves so long as the program isn't being run into the ground or at best left to sputter in circles. Players didn't want to play for Lavin because they knew they wouldn't get better. Dorrell's program, as we all know, wasn't a legitimate option for upper level talent that had the option to go to sc. We're competing for recruits with sc and other top level D1 programs after a 4-8 campaign. Also, Neuheisel's recruiting an attitude and toughness that's been lacking.
Is this Richard Brehaut kid ready to step in and provide a spark right away? He's already on campus and I've heard good things ... sc is so high on Matt Barkley and he very well might be their guy next year. Either way sc has a complete newcomer behind center - and this will be the first time in a long time we've been on even footing with them at the qb. Since #18. Whoever we'll have in the backfield must be able to take a 7 step drop occasionally, and must also be capable of delivering the ball downfield. I don't think NC is going anywhere until he gets a chance to unleash his game where he actually has all his weapons at his disposal. So this is a good thing - and I do think that in 2 years our offense will be dynamite ... I've just got this feeling.
Next year sc will definitely still be better than us at most positions on the field, but I feel as if our program is weaving a solid foundation built upon good principles while the other one is just starting to show some cracks in the foundation and a bit of unravelling. We've just got to get a few more dudes with a mean streak to get on board and I think it's going to happen. I could see a few more of these signings coming our way --- I'd like to get that receiver Flournoy out of Birmingham. The momentum is building for us - I honestly can't wait until next summer ... If anyone has any thoughts or info on our last recruiting push here I'd love to hear it.

I don't know...
if Brehaut is ready to come in and take the helm. Weren’t people commenting that Barkley looked in charge and ready to play @ that HS all-star game whereas Brehaut had a really tough day? In either event, we have a few options @ QB for this next year.. be it Crissman; Prince; or C-Force. I like Prince personally, but I guess that’s for the best coaching staff in America to figure out!
Either way, what good is a stud QB or RB without an OL to work with him?

I don't think you can judge a QB based on high school opposition
That includes very good high school opposition. The best high school QB I ever saw was Robert Marve. He went on to Miami, had some off-the-field problems, then had some on-the-field problems, and is not out of Miami and going to go somewhere else. In my opinion, kids that play QB in high school are the best athletes on the team, and are accustomed to being bigger and faster than everyone on the other team, such that they feel they can never be sacked and will never miss a pass. Once they get to college, though, they find that everyone on the defensive side of the ball (including a lot of the defensive linemen) are as quick and as fast as they are. Guys that are monumental in high school don’t necessarily do the same in college.
It works the other way, too. Once we had a guy we had who played on a couple of small school teams or junior college teams, and wasn’t good enough to play QB. In fact, the year before he played for us at QB he was playing tight end on some Division 15 school in Oregon. But he showed what he had in a particular game against justsc. And of course I’m talking about John Barnes. (Tele – why don’t you cue-up the fourth quarter of that game for us. That’s always something that’s fun to watch.)

On the contrary..
I think you HAVE to judge a QB based on his HS resume. How else are you going to know what he can do? I understand, and agree with your arguement that the QBs are usually the most athletic, but they are judged on whether they can throw accurately and with sufficent arm strength. Lets face it, the star system isn’t the best or most reliable but it’s a good indicator of what a kid can do.
All in all, I wouldn’t say the monoply is over.. but I think with CRN and NC as our “Advance to Reading Railroad” and “Collect $50 from Every Player” cards we’re that much closer… :-)

You're right, but ...
Obviously what a kid does on the field matters a lot. I watched Marve (and lots of other high school QB’s). He was monumentally good. He could throw the ball on a line 50 yards with deadly accuracy. Plant High’s best play was “you go long and I’ll hit you.” But those skills didn’t measure all the things that a QB has to do, and it showed in his performance at Miami.
My point is that we should not concede that justsc’s incoming crop of QB’s is head and shoulders better than ours. High school hype doesn’t always translate into the college game.
Another case in point. There was a guy who played for Eastern Northern Southern Illinois or Iowa, who washed out in NFL Europe, worked in some grocery store warehouse until some the Rams needed some fodder on their practice squad. Then Trent Green goes down with an injury and hello Kurt Warner, league MVP. Not even Doh! and all his sources called that one.
Anyway, I’ve exhausted my analogy supply. You get the last word if you want it.

Petey doesn't have the monopoly either....
His players are always landing on “go to jail”!
GO BRUINS ;)

The monopoly is not over
You can’t do that on the recruiting trail or in the headlines. You do it on the field and last I checked, USC beat us last year and won another Rose Bowl. We’re doing an amazing job right now and putting ourselves in position to end it on the field, but it takes time. We’ll get there, but remember, they are the dominant team until we change the results on the field.

I see signs
u$c is going to be breaking in new offensive and defensive coordinators, a new quarterback (among many other spots on offense and defense), and we are beginning to steal recruits, its nice enough to just be competing. All this has happened in a year when they won the rose bowl and we went 4-8. With all the talent they are graduating, all the new (unknown) coaches, and the new talent to break in I feel they will have an off year next year (at least compared to their standards). We will be improving, and I feel we likely will scrape by a winning record thanks to key returners like ATV and Reggie Carter and a stellar recruiting class (though the new DC will be a question mark). Next year we will have better chances in recruiting thanks to our improvement and u$c having an off year…
Things are looking up!
