Sugar Bowl shaping up as an interesting one...

Utah leads Bama, 21-10 late in the 2nd quarter.

Early Pac-10 action

Arizona leads Cal, 14-13, midway through the 1st half in Berkeley
the gap closers defeated Oregon, 83-62 in Eugene (boy, are the Ducks going to suck this year).

slow Yahoo sports update...

Cal leads the standard, 46-34, early in the 2nd half.

Arizona

Looks like a Lavin coached team. Now down 54-67 as they are imploding down the stretch.

by Nestor on Jan 2, 2009 7:11 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Not sure why Utah got the penalty on that sequence

A nice trick allowed Utah to draw an encroachment penalty by most of Bama’s front 4 on 4th-and-1, but the call went the other way (false start).

Bama regains possession with under 2 minutes in the half, still trailing 21-10.

Kind of like this Fri. night action

come home for work and kick off the weekend with a cocktail, and get to watch our Bruins hopefully take care of business in Corvallis. Nice to get this trip out of the way early as this Oregon St. team will likely improve over the course of the season.

Different deal for us ...

Go out for dinner/drinks after work …and then come home to settle in for Ben Ball action!

Anyone know if anyone is streaming this game for us exiles? :-)

Alabama gets back into it thanks to a Utah fumble

Just scored to cut down the lead to 17-21

utah needs to stop making mistakes. the momentum is definitely shifting

Go Bruins!

They are driving again

Alabama defense looks a little soft.

Ugh

We get Marques Johnson, who always blows his commentary by trying too hard not to be partial to UCLA. Find him kind of annoying.

by Nestor on Jan 2, 2009 7:31 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Understand what you mean

but I kinda appreciate the attempts to not come off as a homer. Oh well, I guess that’s what happens when an alum has to call his alma mater’s games…

I am kind of tired of this

Michelle/Craig Robinson story. I certainly don’t care.

by Nestor on Jan 2, 2009 7:40 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

It's not the politics

I just don’t think what he did at DNCC has any relevancy to this game. It’s boring. We have all heard the story already.

by Nestor on Jan 2, 2009 7:43 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

but we have read so much about it already. Plus I don’t want this topic like that Chelsea Clinton/Stanford story when FSN found it obligatory to pan into her everytime UCLA was playing at Maples. :)

by Nestor on Jan 2, 2009 7:55 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Addendum

you know we are on the same side wrt to underlying politics (I just think the constant reference to the story is boring).

Stuck in a hotel with no FSN. What game tracker do you folks recommend?

by Raisin on Jan 2, 2009 7:46 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

tried it, can't find a feed

So I’m using the official game tracker, and I have a subscription so I can at least listen to it.

by impaulv on Jan 2, 2009 7:48 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

ah... I see now

unfortunate (but thankful that mbootymah does it at all).

Aside from the gametracker linked from the official site, Yahoo is the best tracker/updated boxscore, imo.

by bruinhoo on Jan 2, 2009 7:51 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Thanks for all the recommendations

I should be able to get 1150 AM in a few minutes (always annoyed when the Lakers are on at the same time as UCLA). Hopefully I can get the game at the bar in a bit but I think the Sugar Bowl and the Lakers will take up all the TVs.

Questions for the geezers

What year did the standard and ASU join the Pac-10, and when did they adopt the current conference schedule (play everyone twice)?

by bruinbabe2000 on Jan 2, 2009 7:56 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Can't answer for sure

But when I was in school, it was the Pac 8. I remember playing a non-conference game against Arizona.

by Fox 71 on Jan 2, 2009 7:58 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Mr. BB was saying

That they were talking about how in the modern era, no team has won four straight Pac-10 titles. We wanted to see when the modern era started, and if it was when the standard and ASU joined.

by bruinbabe2000 on Jan 2, 2009 8:00 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

A deafening silence

I don’t hear any of the guy crabbing about Coach Howland not having an up-tempo offense.

by Fox 71 on Jan 2, 2009 8:03 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

This is FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But I am not “comfortable”!!!

by Nestor on Jan 2, 2009 8:03 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

JM

I’ve constantly heard Bobo is “out of game shape” – what does that mean exactly? Is it that he’s a big man and Howland’s D is something you have to get used to or is it something physical with him? Definitely not trying to knock the guy – just curious. I’d love to see him get some more minutes, especially against “weaker” opponents.

by zinlinez on Jan 2, 2009 8:04 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

He needs to be able to do two things

Learn to hedge effectively (get back to his man)

Run the floor.

Those are just starters and they require a player to be in shape. Note even the great KL a once in a generation talent to come through Westwood got benched early on last year because he wasn’t hedging properly. So JM is just going through a natural progressive for a frosh in Westwood.

by Nestor on Jan 2, 2009 8:06 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

He labors running up and down the court

I love the kid. He will be leaner and stronger next year and probably more aerobically fit.

Watch AA2 move and then watch Bobo.

I think Bobo knows this and isn’t complaining.

A lot to expect of a freshman to be physically prepared to play in the middle.

sjh

by Class of 66 on Jan 2, 2009 8:07 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

The first explanation, I believe

His conditioning is not up to Howland’s standards. Even Kevin Love had that problem last season; his advanced skills allowed him to compensate.

by bruinhoo on Jan 2, 2009 8:08 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

thanks

Those explanations make sense – I’m sure he’ll be a force to be reckoned with shortly. A big layup in the waning minutes of the elite eight perhaps? ;) I love this team

by zinlinez on Jan 2, 2009 8:09 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

OSU needs some creativity

Making up your mind to go to the rack from the 3 point line is just begging to have offensive fouls called on you.

Gordon is really making incredible progress

not just on offense. His D has markedly improved. He’s still a little slow on the full hedge but covers alot of ground fast to get back into position.

Pulling for Utah here

understand the sc/bama dynamic, but do like to see the SEC get a little comeupance, as well as pulling for the underdog in a game which I have no rooting interest.

Gotta keep the pressure on in the second half

I hope we don’t get into mode in settling for 3s (gotta make sure we take them in the flow of the game … cough*ND*cough).

Also like to see more intensity from JK.

JK came out flat early on.

by Nestor on Jan 2, 2009 8:16 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

We aren’t at risk of getting out rebounded by them.

But, even though I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express — I’m not a coach and we have the world’s best.

by Nestor on Jan 2, 2009 8:19 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Go Utes..

I’ve long been a Bama fan (my uncle was close friends with Bear Bryant), but I like the fact that mid-major team from the West is beating an elite SEC team.

It’s also good for college FB when the powers that be realize that teams like Utah are legit. We need a playoff.

Easy money and faithless women, red-eye whiskey for the pain...

by rich87 on Jan 2, 2009 8:19 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Nah

I am not big into “parity”.

When it comes to sports I am a Republican. I don’t believe in sharing. :-) I want UCLA to dominate and tradition to be limited to few teams (this of course doesn’t apply to the Trojies).

I don’t care much for Cinderellas.

I have a hard time rooting for these southern teams

I remember when they were all white all the time.

I know things have changed but first impressions last a long time.

I am still a bit shocked to see so many Black players — like the guys on Ole Miss celebrating with the flags after the game.
