Is it time to start DG?

Watching tonight's game, I realized that it's time for DG to enter the starting lineup. It is clear that the power forward position is a bit problematic for us right now, and neither JK or ND seem to have made a leap forward this season. I know its early in the season, but I think DG has shown that he has the defensive capabilities and the offensive instincts to merit a place in the starting lineup, and its been fun watching him get better and better each game.

I think that JK can best contribute by coming off the bench and adding energy to the lineup. ND can also come in off the bench when we need to rest one of the other big guys.

What is everyone else's thoughts?

Is it time to start DG?

Absolutely. I can’t figure BH’s rationale for JK’s minutes. Not only is there is no production on the stat sheet, but there are no intangibles either. Poor hedges, late to help on D, poor screens, pushed around under the boards, pathetic no excuse free throws, wastes good feeds inside with weak moves to the hole and hesitation. Gordon produces significanly more results in half the time. BH can get away with JK on the floor against the “cupcake teams” we’ve seen recently, but not against quality teams where every possession counts.

experience and leadership

that’s what Keefe provides, and that’s what Howland values along with defense. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see DG get some more PT. But Gordon is a freshmen that’s played a dozen games in his career. Keefe has a full season under his belt and until BH feels comfortable relying on DG to play a bigger role, Keefe will continue to start. I trust Howland’s judgement with this one.

Also, DG’s being used as the backup center. Having your backup center start at PF probably isn’t the best idea.

However, if JM can get more acclimated to the college game (and become the backup center), I can see DG starting down the road.

Yep

Being a starter for Ben Howland means lot more than just bringing energy/athleticism into the lineup.

Tough decision

I have been toying with this thought myself. DG has quickly become my favorite freshman on the team because of his hustle and athleticism. IF he became a starter, he would probably do well since he isn’t the type of player who needs plays run for him to be involved (which he wouldn’t get with DC, JS, JH, and AA2 on the floor).

That said, CBH is a loyal man and JK has made many sacrifices for our team. He provides solid play and does little things that help the rest of the starters. Comparing stats between JK and DG is misleading b/c JK is playing with the aforementioned starters where he isn’t a focal point of the offense and DG has had the majority of his minutes in mop up duty against inferior opponents.

Barring some terrible slump, I think the inertia of JK being the starter (it would probably hurt him psychologically to be dumped to the bunch) will keep JK as the starter for the rest of the year. However, I definitely see DG’s minutes increasing as the year goes on with JK and ND’s minutes decreasing slightly to where they play about the same amount (hopefully with ND and his “questionable” decision making being the third option).

not yet

But if he develops a consistent enough offense game and sticks to his assignments on defense he could be a dyamic option for the front court later in the year, I’m hoping he’ll learn very quickly, and I must admit He’s seeming to get more comfortable finding his role on the court, and using his god giving athletic ability to his advantage.

O.A.

DG is a better player

But I don’t think DG should have the responsibility of being the starter so soon. I’d rather the staff ease him into the starting lineup slowly, but he will be the starter by season’s end at this rate. James Keefe’s game has been nonexistent, and I don’t know if it’s from a lack of confidence, that’s his role to defer to others, or his game just doesn’t translate well at this level.

To borrow from that a*sclown Corso...

…not so fast sweetheart.

DG is great, don’t get me wrong. I love what he’s bringing to the table, but let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. DG is one for down the road, perhaps late this season, but most likely the next two seasons.

Let’s not forget some of the potential that JK flashed at the end of last season. If he can get back to that level, he’ll be just fine. Guys go through slumps and for some, it takes longer to shake the rust off.

CBH knows what he’s doing. I expect he’ll find ways to get DG on the floor more often, but I think at this point, starting him over JK might be a bit premature.

Give it time.

It's not about DG, it's about JK

It’s not about DG’s freshman flaws. It’s about JK being a zero. It’s about no positive productivity from JK. There are several ways to adjust the minutes and combinations at the 4 and 5 to reduce JK’s minutes. Sadly, ND hasn’t stepped up either, so more minutes for DG and a smaller lineup with JS doing some minutes at the 4 are options.

Keefe

is 2nd on the team in rebounds and has been praised by Howland before for his boxing out which allows other teammates to get rebounds. Keefe is also turning the ball over less than anyone on the team getting regular minutes. Keefe is probably our best screener after AA2 and you cannot underestimate the importance of that in CBH’s offense. DG has been very good of late and Keefe has struggled some so we should see DG’s minutes increase, but comments calling JK a zero says a lot more about you than it does Keefe.

JK

Let’s see. JK is the starting 4 with the most minutes. Who else would be #2 in reb.? However, DG is at .38 reb/minute, 65% better than Keith at .23/min. JK TO rate is statistically negligible from other starters, and more important, his assist to turnover ration is second worst among starters after AA2. Perhaps, you should record games and isolate JK in slo motion to see how poor his play is.

In CBH's offense

Keefe doesn’t get the ball in positions to get any assists making the assist to turnover ratio irrelevant. Also, considering this is a JK vs. DG debate, why would you bring up JK’s 1/2.3 ratio when DG has a 1/4 ratio? I do record every UCLA game and usually watch them twice so I’ve seen Keefe. I’ve seen quality screens and great boxing out. JK does a lot of things that cannot be measured by stats.

Trivia Question

Which starting power forward has the lowest rebound per game average of any starting power forward in the Pac10?

Trivia Questio #2

Which starting power forward has the lowest points per game and blocks per game average of any starting power forward in the Pac10? (hint: every other forward posts him up and goes around him like his feet are nailed to the floor)

hamptonguard

We got your point. You now need to chill out and lay off the repetitive attacks on JK. Consider it your first and last warning. Thanks.

This is the last time I'm going to indulge you

JK does a lot more than the numbers say. If you watched today’s game you saw him be the only player who showed some toughness on the boards. He cleared some Oregon bodies out and the paint was much emptier when he was in. You also saw CBH talking to Gordon a lot because he wasn’t bumping cutters and he was late on his rotations and help assignments. DG has a bright future, but he’s still just a freshman learning the small things.

I don’t get how points per game and blocks per game factor into forwards going around him like his feet are nailed to the floor. It’s rare that power forwards in the modern college game get blocks on their own man. Blocks from that position usually come from weakside help so his man going around him doesn’t apply here and we’ve only played 2 Pac 10 games so other 4’s having high PPG averages isn’t because of his defense.

JK is not an ideal starter and in a perfect world (meaning LRMAM returned) he’d be coming off the bench for 8 minutes a game, but that’s not the case. At the moment he’s our best option at the 4 so that’s what we have to go with. The numbers won’t show it, but watch him bump cutters and help on the big to big double. He does it very well, not because he’s more talented than DG, but because he’s more experienced and recognizes situations quicker. For now, JK is our best option. You can reply any way you’d like and with whatever irrelevant stats and snap judgments you’d like. I’m done with this. Enjoy.

Hamipointguard96

Let’s see. Who are we going to rely on?

An armchair fan who thinks he knows UCLA basketball?

Or, the coach who has taken this team to three straight Final Fours and who watches/drills these guys on a daily basis?

If CBH thinks JK should start and DG should come off the bench, that’s a call I’m going to defer to.
