The Den last night...
Was at the game last night vs. Cal and loved what the Den was doing before each foul shot. Just blurting/screaming out load right before the opposing team's shooter releases. It was effective and fun to experience. Have not seen this before in the previous games I've attended this year. Something new? Either way, great job! Keep it up!!

I was going to comment in the game thread
I thought it was great. Sounded good on TV and that’s why, Fox, you can’t turn off the sound.

Agree
The crowd, at least on TV, sounded good last night. Of course it helped that we were pounding the Bezerkleyans and there was a lot of positive energy.
I do wish the announcers would take a breath now and then. After a while, although the sound is still on, my ears just tune them out.

That argument doesn't work
I can remember what the cheering sounds like. I can tell exactly what the sound is when there is the close-up of the Den. It’s like when you sing in the shower – you hear much more than the voice. (I was going to say you hear the orchestra, but that would be to Opera-centric.)
I gladly give all that up to avoid listening to the blowhards. I do not need to hear them tell me that we made a basket. I don’t need them to tell me their opinion as to whether it was a charge or a block – I can see the play myself and neither need nor want their opinion.
Let me put it this way. Is there any announcer who is so good that you would plan your week such that you could hear him (or her) announce a game no matter who was playing? Would you ever hope that the crowd noise could be dampened so that you would only hear the dulcet tones of, let’s say, Dickie V? No one fills that particular bill for me, and indeed it’s just the opposite. I just cannot stomach 99.9% of the announcers in the world. (My exceptions – Dwayne Staats and Joe Magraine, the local Rays guys. They had to learn to be very entertaining, because until this year there wasn’t much to root for in the baseball department.)
I’m leaving the volume off.

Donny Mac
I think he is a great announcer who gives me the information I want to hear in an interesting, informative way.
Marques was a great Bruin, but he is getting more grating by the game.

Agreed
That was something I did by myself when I was there, but no one really followed along. I figured it’s not as distracting if the noise is constant, because that seems only slightly better than being completely silent. I like that there’s a concerted effort to have everyone do it now.
Now if we could only do something about those shirts…
I notice that most of the students wear the old Den shirts if they have them.

Brick!!!
During my days at UCLA, there was a guy who yelled Brick Brick Brick while holding up a brick. So, yeah, I agree, yelling Brick or something right before he shoots the ball is the most effective.

Definately a concerted effort now...
from what we saw from across the court was one of the “yell leaders” held up a megaphone and everyone was silent until he dropped the cone and the Den went nuts. It was impressive.
It would be great if the whole stadium joined in. Silent during the preshot routine then everyone screamed and shouted. Unlikely that will happen, thought, especially in graveyard, eerrrrrr…….section I sit in. Good seats, just too many stoic old timers.
Also, the Den could have pigs on their shirts for all I care. It is more important that they all have the same color shirts on.
Keep it up Bruins!!!

The Den has been strong this year
but the rest of Pauley has been terrible. Nobody wants to cheer or yell or stand. Even when the yell leaders try to lead the entire arena in an 8 clap before the game, maybe half of the people join in and not even that many bother standing or clapping during introductions/team running out.

There's still room for improvement
On the offensive cheers with claps involved, the Den often tends to rush, sometimes leading to different sections being out of sync and the cheer dying. It’s been better during the Pac-10 season, but before that it was pretty bad.

That will never change, Jaffa
Students were rushing cheers when I was a student, and we had peerless cheerleaders (that was for you, sjh.) That tendency will change at about the same time that justsc actually gets sanctioned for anything.

A Proper 8 Clap
is supposed to be slooow, with no holding the L.
It is supposed to be crisp and clear. It is supposed to have power, ring out, and linger.
Premature ejaculation on one of the most hallowed UCLA cheers is never a good thing.

Agree about the rest of the arena
It’s gotten to the point now where I feel like I’m being rude if I make noise at any time with the ball in play.

I KNOW!
I go to basically every game and I yell, clap, stand and cheer in my section but I am the minority. Unless there is a HUGE play to put us up on a big team, people just sit in their seats and clap. I don’t really understand it. I recently brought someone from Tennessee to a couple of exhibition games and then to the Arizona/Arizona state weekend. I was telling him that he would see a huge difference in the crowd from those early season games and to be honest, it wasn’t nearly the level I thought it would be. He was saying that at TN games EVERYBODY cheers like the students. I have been going for many years and maybe it’s just me, but this year just seems more quiet. I will continue to yell and try and get my section going!
GO BRUINS!!!

Love the free throw routine, but
HATE the soccer cheer that broke out from time to time. Leave that one on the pitch.

As a Den member
and current sign holder, I can tell you that at some of the games I have been really proud of the Den. They screwed us this year and gave a lot of people only half packages. This resulted in about 75% of returning Den members with the Blue package (ASU, Cal, Wash ST, SC, Oregon ST). The Gold package which includes Notre Dame is about 75% freshman. Tomorrow is a gold game and there are about 12 people at the moment camping out.
Last week, so members of the den met with yell crew, the band, and the dance team to figure out how to get more people involved. They came up with the free throw thing and some new cheers. Personally, I can’t stand the “Ole” song and have recommended that we take it out. We are also trying to be more in sync on offense which seems like it has worked the last 2 games. We are also trying to spell in some “Defense clap clap Defense” cheers.

You guys do a great job
It’s the rest of the fans I can’t understand at times. Keep it up and don’t forget my suggestion of wearing cups on the outside of your pants at the $c game. LOL!

Stanford
has been doing the free throw line for years and I’ve been trying to get anyone that would listen that we should adopt it at Pauley. Glad someone finally did! Screwed people with half packages? 12 people camping out!?! Even during the Lavin years we had way more than that camping out! I am very sorry to hear about this, but keep up the good work yell team!
