BN Gameday: Oregon Open Thread

We will stick with the defensive theme even though the hot story is the QB situation for both teams. Can our defense redeem itself after last weekend's outing against Stanford? Can Brian Price and co. set the tone right out of the gate in their first series today at the Rose Bowl. Here is to our defense shining in a bounce back Saturday and setting up rest of CRN's second season at UCLA.

Bruins and Ducks will kickoff around 12:30 p.m. at the Rose Bowl. We will have to put up Rich Gannon and the insufferable David Norrie on ABC. I hope someone has given David the message that it is ok for him to show his blue and gold colors on national tv.

If you still need to get caught up on all of our notes concerning this game from last few weeks, you can do so by checking out our full coverage here. If you are looking to track the game online you can also keep your tabs open to the official site and WWL's game page.

Let's get this game thread started.

Fire away.

GO BRUINS.

To N wrt the spread

I also think that it’s the schematic advantage of the spread that makes great athletes looks lost and out of place. It confuses defenses and can punish those that play fast, aggressive, and undisciplined (I think Georgia’s D possesses these qualities)

by mdjohns4 on Oct 10, 2009 12:06 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Good point

To me the key to stopping spread defenses is having those big/fast athletes who can fit in either as LB or SS or play a hybrid position. Akeem Ayers is the guy on our defense who seems like the perfect counter weapon. I was under the impression that Georgia defense has lot of athletes like Akeem. So surprised that they are having a hard time with this. On the other hand, from what I can remember from Tennessee they play more of a pro-set offense and our defense matched up well against them.

Sweet!

My H.S. alma mater! It is good that we are getting in there, when in the past it pretty much was a $UC* pipeline. Rollinson is a $UC* alum . . .

Yeah

CRN has done a great job reestablishing connections with Rollinson’s program. Rollinson has been coming to lot of UCLA practices.

Bullough

Wasn’t happy with his game scheming at all last week. We will need to watch our defense very closely today. He will need to do a much better job w in game adjustments after what we saw last week.

by Nestor on Oct 10, 2009 12:25 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Believe

Ward’s replacement is Boyett, freshman. done very well filling in. Ducks have many athletes on D. I was hoping banged up secondary might allow Prince to stretch field a bit. Anxious to see what he can do. Front 4 has been getting pressure on opposing QBs and forcing them to get rid of the ball pretty quickly. Big test for bruin line today.

by DannyJay01 on Oct 10, 2009 12:38 PM PDT via mobile reply actions   0 recs

Offense looks good

Prince is shaking off the rust: missed two easy throws that would have got us a first down. Got to make the throws dude.

by Bellerophon on Oct 10, 2009 12:39 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Passing game

It’s early, but I like that our guys are finding space in their defense to get open. If only Kevin could hit them in the numbers, we’d be rolling.

Hard punt to field

But he should have done better.

Honestly, I don’t like having him back there: he’s one of our key WRs and I don’t like risking him getting injured returning punts.

I’d love to see what Thigpen or Carroll can do back there. They have the speed and I think anything we can do to get the ball in their hands is good for our Bruins.

Nice pitch and catch

Prince to Embree for a first down.

And I love that Embree had two Ducks on him and still didn’t go down. Guy has great size. I’d love to see us put more balls high for him to go jump and get over shorter defenders: he has the height and the size to win those balls in the air.

figured first couple

of series Prince might be out of sync. Freshman coming back from broken jaw against Oregon D, not an easy task.

Yeah

not surprising.

by Nestor on Oct 10, 2009 12:50 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

To be realistic

Prince is going to be rusty for a good chunk of the first half.

I think we need to keep it close, within one score going into half. If we can keep the Ducks from building a huge lead, I like our chances in the second half, once Prince gets back up to game speed and into rhythm.

I know we were all hoping he’d lead us down the field, but give him some time and it’ll work out.

We just need to rely on our defense this half.

Missed opportunity

Carroll should have had that

by DannyJay01 on Oct 10, 2009 1:29 PM PDT via mobile reply actions   0 recs

Austin with a great catch

While being hit. That’s what we need him to do, and only that. No more punt returning, please.

Great speed by Carroll but he’s got to bring that ball in. Should be 1st down on the Oregon 10 or 11.

by Bellerophon on Oct 10, 2009 1:29 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Love the attempts

to stretch the defense.

Forbath

can hit 50 plus

by Bruins095 on Oct 10, 2009 1:32 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Don't know about that...

…Medlock was kind of weak.

Dude was able to drop the ball in the end zone all day, every day his freshman year, and it went downhill from there. Guy would blast a 50+ yarder, but then miss an easy 20 yarder.

And there was that whole DUI and leaving his friend in his totaled car thing. Not exactly a Bruin to be proud of.

But I love Forbath. Dude is money. Consistent and has a great leg.

And since we’re on the subject, I’m down with Locke and his ability to put the ball in the end zone on kickoff. Rotstein was terrible. Just absolutely terrible.

by Bellerophon on Oct 10, 2009 1:35 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Rotstein

is to kicking game is what the Law Firm was to QBing an offense.

by Nestor on Oct 10, 2009 1:36 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

3 points off of a drive that started at the 1 yard line is nothing to be upset about. Come on Forbath!

by BruinDrums on Oct 10, 2009 1:34 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

To hell with the fake punt

Forbath has a boot!

by DannyJay01 on Oct 10, 2009 1:35 PM PDT via mobile reply actions   0 recs

Not a bad drive

After getting pinned down so deep. Plus lot of breather for our D. Now the special teams need to lock them down deep.

by Nestor on Oct 10, 2009 1:35 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Forbath!!!!

crazy! he kicked two 50 plus against sdsu, both with distance.

by Bruins095 on Oct 10, 2009 1:35 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Norrie agrees.

FWIW, said he is lock to make an NFL roster.

by orlandobruin on Oct 10, 2009 1:38 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

We needed that 2nd time out... I hope :0)

I’m feeling better about our future. Let’s go Bruins! let’s get a 3 and out and drive down and score to end the half. The Oregon Offense is going to be cold.

by westwood12003 on Oct 10, 2009 1:37 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Have the SEC and PAC 10 switched roles?

Lots of defensive battles this season in the PAC, while over in the SEC it looks like the Hawai’i and the WAC.

Is a weapon.

by Nestor on Oct 10, 2009 1:48 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Poor playcalling on that drive.

Run run pass. Should have went down field on 2nd and short.

by orlandobruin on Oct 10, 2009 1:48 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

it's only poor playcalling in hindsight

Thigpen looked great on run #1. He does that again on run #2 and the offense is cookin

by insomniacslounge on Oct 10, 2009 1:49 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, simple game theory dictates that passing on 2nd and 1 is a low-risk high-reward play that leaves you with plenty of options on 3rd down.

by s.riley on Oct 10, 2009 1:49 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Norrie just said he’s been very impressed by Norm Chow’s playcalling. Do these guys watch the games? l don’t think it’s been horrible, but certainly very predictable.

by s.riley on Oct 10, 2009 1:49 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

i dont think playcalling is a big deal…certainly overrated part of coaching

by jtthirtyfour on Oct 10, 2009 1:50 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Interesting

jtthirtyfour … I’d love to hear expand more on that argument when you have a chance. Would love to hear it.

long way to go bro

Under winter skies

We are victorious

by WhiteRabbit on Oct 10, 2009 1:52 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Didn't think it would be 3-0

But I’ll take it so long as we stay ahead

by bruin578 on Oct 10, 2009 1:52 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I'll take the 3-0 lead at half

Keeping the Ducks’ explosive offense at 0 for the half is pretty solid.

Although you know they’re going to blame it all on Costa since he’s not Masoli. Dude has played well and not made any mistakes. Ducks’ playcalling just isn’t working against our defense and we’re controlling the time of possession.

If we keep it up, I’m liking our chances to squeak out a close one.

by Bellerophon on Oct 10, 2009 1:53 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Gotta Take Advantage Of Opportunities We Get In 2nd Half

Still feel like we should be up 10-0 instead of 3-0. We can’t afford to miss out on easy scoring opportunities in 2nd half.

Los Angeles Rams and the UCLA Bruins!!!!!

Right here and closing this one up. Let’s GO BRUINS.
