Cal football: A tragic story
With Cal coming to town in a few days, I decided to write up over on my blog about the mediocrity that is Cal football. In the first part of a two part series, I outlined the patheticness that has been Cal football since 1925. Please check out what I wrote in more details but here is a summary of fun facts that can be used to trash talk your Berkeley friends:
In the last 100 years (10 decades), Cal has had 4 decades of losing records.
They own a 2-5-1 Rose Bowl record, haven't been there in 50 years, and haven't won since the Third Reich Ruled Germany.
They finished in the top 4 of the conference only 19 times in the last 50 years.

It is nice that even though UCLA football as been in the shitter for the past decade, we can still feel a lot better about it considering Cal's ineptitude. The second part of the series will feature how Cal has faired against the other Pac-10 California schools since 1930 (which I have a feeling will expose more tragic times for the Bears).

Good work
Thanks for the info. My neighbor is a Cal alum. Need to remind him why he needs to take the Cal flag down.

I don’t think you’re going to get many Cal fan’s goat by reminding them of how terrible Cal has been historically. We know. We kind of wear it like a badge of honor, like Red Sox fans used to, except (mostly) without being douchebags about it.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

Bravo, Rags
In my experience, the use of a simile rarely carries the descriptive punch that the author intends. "The sun came up like (fill in the blank – it’s generally not particularly good.) Your post is the exception to the rule. Someone trying to figure out how a Cal fan could embrace a not particularly embraceable legacy might find it difficult to grasp the concept. That is, until the simile: “[L]ike Red Sox fans used to, except (mostly) without being douchebags about it” explains everything perfectly.
I live on the East Coast. Until the Red Sox actually won something, their fans were basically easy to get along with, like most of the Cal fans I’ve encountered. But now, they’re no longer like Cal fans, because they’re (mostly) douchebags.
I salute you, Rags. You have explained a complex concept so that it is easily understood. (And it made me chuckle for quite a long time.)
