One goal games did the #2 Bruins in at the UCI Invitational. After beating Redlands, 14-4, in the tournament opener and #8 Long Beach St., 16-6, UCLA suffered a pair of one goal losses. In the semifinals, the Bruins were dropped by #3 USC, 9-8, then in the third place match, the score was 5-4 as #1 Stanford beat the Bruins for the third time this season. Now 12-4, UCLA will play a key MPSF match as #4 Cal visits the beautiful Spieker Aquatic Center on Friday night.

Women's Soccer

The #3 Bruins have been on fire and the beginning of Pac-10 play wouldn't stop them. UCLA opened up conference play on Friday by beating Arizona, 2-0. Lauren Cheney scored the Bruins' second goal of the game and moved up to #2 on the UCLA all-time scoring list with it. It wasn't easy, but UCLA managed to pick up a win over #20 Arizona St. and begin Pac-10 play 2-0. The Bruins fell behind 1-0, then netted two, but an ASU goal sent it to overtime, where Lauren Barnes struck to give UCLA  3-2 win. Now 11-1-1 overall, 2-0 in Pac-10 play and winners of their last 11, UCLA will head to the Bay Area a match at #21 Cal on Friday, then a gigantic match at #1 Stanford Sunday.

Star-divide

Men's Soccer

Kyle Nakazawa continues to be a one man show for #4 UCLA, but it wasn't enough to earn all three points at San Diego St. on Sunday. Nakazawa had a goal and an assist to stretch his goal streak to five and scoring streak to seven, but the Bruins only managed a 2-2 draw versus the Aztecs. Brian Perk and Michael Stephens returned from duty with the US U-20 National Team to play for the Bruins, but Perk had to be taken to the hospital after a facial injury following a collision. UCLA, 6-1-2 overall, 1-0-2 in the Pac-10 and unbeaten in their last seven will play a pair of big home matches this weekend as #23 Stanford and #5 Cal visit.

Women's Volleyball

With 3,000+ fans in attendance, #16 UCLA rolled past #13 USC in straight sets. The Bruins won 27-25, 25-20 and 25-22 as they won their fourth consecutive home match over the Trojans. Now 13-5 and 3-2 in the Pac-10, the Bruins sit above USC in the conference with a trips to Washington St. and #4 Washington on this week's docket.

Thanks, Rye

Speaking of Lauren Cheney, we were classmates in my Senior year (2008). I got to know her a little better and was actually lucky enough to do a piece on her for my English Lit. seminar.

It is no secret that Lauren had an open heart surgery when she was still very young. It was a corrective surgery, but considering that and what she means to the program, it makes for an amazing end to her career at UCLA.

I want her to be at UCLA if and when we finally win that first National Championship. She’s already an Olympic champion…I wish her and her team all the luck (and hard work) in their pursuit.
