Question For All BNers Who Root For A Major League Baseball Team
Let me see if I can set this up in a very simple way. Call this spin off of Achilles's Friday guessing game.
Let's start with the Dodger Fans and Angels Fans (or even Yankees or Phillies' fans) who are glued to the baseball playoffs.
The Sports Gods come to you with two simple choices. You have to pick 1 out of these 2:
- Choice 1: Dodgers Or Angels win the world series in 2009 but as a cost UCLA football wins less than 6 games (including a loss to Southern Cal) and the UCLA basketball finishes lower than 3rd place in the Pac-10 conference
- Choice 2: Dodgers or Angels choke in the playoffs (either in CS or WS) but in return UCLA footballs wins at least 6 regular seasons games (including a W in last game of reg season) and the UCLA basketball finishes in the top-3 of Pac-10
So, if you are either a Dodger fan or Angels fans in BN respond in the headers (Team you root for, and your choice)
For example my response is going to be:
Dodgers, Choice 2
Again if you are a Yankees or Phillies fan, you should answer the question as well. (you don't get to be off the hook).
As for the fans of other teams (Giants, As, Padres, and even the Cubs) who didn't make the playoffs or are already out of it, you also get to play. Here are the choices for you from the same Sports God referenced above:
- Choice 1: [Insert your team] wins the world series in 2009 but as a cost UCLA football wins less than 8 games (including a loss at Southern Cal) and the UCLA basketball finishes lower than 3rd place in the Pac-10 conference
- Choice 2: [Insert your team] misses the playoffs again but in return UCLA football wins at least 8 regular seasons games (including a W in last game of reg season) and the UCLA basketball wins back the Pac-10 conference
You know what to do. Just list the name of your favorite team and the choice number. Of course if you want to provide a big explanation, we'd love to hear that too!
Now let's see what's more important to you. Your baseball team or our football team and the Ben Ball warriors.
Really anxious to see the responses. Play ball guys.
GO BRUINS.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Angels, Choice 2
I say that a bit reluctantly.
Like I said offline, I wouldn’t mind the Angels losing … choking feels worse.
The Angels are the underdog to the Yankees, I think they can win, I hope they will win, but I won’t be suicidal if they don’t win.
The Bruins need a bowl game more than the Angels need a series win. The Angels are good and they have a bright future, they’ll get another one, I think.
Failing to get to a bowl game this year would be a setback for UCLA, IMO.

Dodgers, Choice 1
I love my Bruins far far more than any pro team, but this ain’t our year for either team. Winning against SC would feel fluky… I want us to beat them with a solid foundation, and I just don’t think we’re there yet.
Argh I’m really agonizing around choice 1 vs choice 2. I’ve rooted for the Dodgers since I was a little kid.
Go Bruins!

LOL
Not supposed to be a easy question. The purpose was to make you agonize!

The hardest part of the choices were Choice 1 doesn’t really offer anything “bad” to my Bruins that are materially off my expectations for this season. Slightly worse, yes.
I guess that’s the dilemma. le sigh.
Go Bruins!

Dodgers, choice 2
This question has got me thinking of another hypothetical situation: How much money would you “turn down” in exchange for a UCLA football championship? A UCLA basketball championship? (i.e. I would turn down “x” amount of dollars in exchange for a UCLA FB championship). I would guess we would get a lot of surprising answers here on BN!

Padres, choice 2
I don’t have any hope for the Padres for another 10 years (though i will gladly be pleasantly surprised). I will still follow them, as I did in the long wait for the Chargers to get good again. Probably need to start spending more money to buy and retain quality players.
But how can you beat both UCLA football and basketball sucess?!?! Go Bruins!!!
GO BRUINS!!! CHEER LIKE CHAMPIONS!!!

Nestor ...
would you rather have the Dodgers win the World Series or the Bruins win the Pac 10 (but not win the national title)?

Bruins win the Pac-10
Bruins over all my other sports teams. Doesn’t matter what year.

Angels, choice 1
My decision hinged on what I want more…the Angels winning the World Series, or the Dodgers choking in the playoffs.
I’m a lifelong Angels fan and hate the Dodgers, but if I were to pick choice 2 with the Dodgers choking, then it doesn’t really present an option where the Angels would win the World Series. So that’s why I picked choice 1. Furthermore, in picking choice 1, at least one of my favorite teams would be winning a championship. UCLA footballing winning at least 6 games (including U$C) and UCLA basketball finishing in the top-3 would be nice, but I’d rather take the sure World Series victory for the Angles.
Of course my answer would be different if the option for UCLA to win a championship was available. A UCLA championship trumps any other championship for any of my favorite teams.

I don't think you read the question correctly
The choice is between the results for Angels and UCLA’s football/basketball teams (if you are a Halos fan … what happens with the Dodgers shouldn’t figure into the equation). Here are the choices for you as an Angels fan:
* Choice 1: Angels win the world series in 2009 but as a cost UCLA football wins less than 6 games (including a loss to Southern Cal) and the UCLA basketball finishes lower than 3rd place in the Pac-10 conference
* Choice 2: Angels choke in the playoffs (either in CS or WS) but in return UCLA footballs wins at least 6 regular seasons games (including a W in last game of reg season) and the UCLA basketball finishes in the top-3 of Pac-10
by Nestor on Oct 16, 2009 10:23 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I understood the question...
but as an Angels’ fan, I wouldn’t want the Angels to choke in the playoffs in exchange for an okay finish for the Bruins FB and BB teams. As an Angels’ fan, I’d rather see the Dodgers choke..but given your further explanation, i’d still pick Choice 1 with the Angels winning the WS.

Actually
Considering the totality of the circumstances, UCLA football wins in 6 regular seasons games (including a W in last game of reg season) and a UCLA basketball finish in the top-3 of Pac-10 … THIS YEAR … is more than “okay” for both of our programs. That sets both of those programs up perfectly for the short and long term future.

Angels, choice 1
No matter where my Bruins finish this year, I will find comfort knowing the two programs are led by excellent coaches who are most concerned with the “big picture”. It’s all about winning for my Halos.

That loss to $C will hurt like a two-day hangover…maybe they’ll receive the death penalty from the ncaa in the off-season (I know, I know…when they build a snowman in hell).

A's, choice 2
Given the current state of the team, and the expected trajectory of development of the A’s young core of players, It is not a particularly hard choice.
The A’s have a excellent group of young (really young!) pitchers, and a number of young position players, some of whom may actually be accurately described as “young talent”. Exciting to think of how well the team may been down the road, but at the same time, I realize that they are not yet good enough to contend for a playoff spot (’09 or even in ’10).
Ask this question again in 2012, and I might have a tougher time coming to an answer.

Now, I would take a UCLA basketball/football championship over any of my bay area allengiances (moreso than a Giants WS, Niners Super Bowl, or Warriors title, which of course will never happen). So, if we’re talking one wins a title, the other doesn’t, I’d take UCLA, hands down. The way you phrased the question, I gotta take my Giants. It’s been a LOOOONG time since we last won the WS (i.e. never in San Francisco history).

Angels, #1
I would love to see the Bruins do well, and the $c loss would be very painfull, but a chance to see one of my teams win a world title over a chance at 6 wins and a 2nd or 3rd class bowl game…I have to pick the championship. I missed the Angels last title as I was stationed overseas and would give almost anything to see it happen agin this year. Damn you Nestor for doing this to me. I am supposed to be getting ready for Game 1 with the Skanks, not agonizing over this. Thanks.

Dodgers, Choice 2
But it’s really close. I love the Dodgers, but I bleed UCLA true blue and gold. Tough, tough, question…but they way I look at it, UCLA football winning 6 games almost guarantees a bowl game, while a top 3 finish in basketball is a chance in the Dance. Those two things give UCLA a shot to win a championship now or soon, which would be AWESOME. With that being said, GO DODGERS!

You must be the other Nats fan.
The first is a DC transplant here in town.
You have my deepest sympathy baseballularly speaking. I do indeed know what you’re going through, having been a Rays fan. The difference is that I don’t see the Nats ever doing better than what they’re doing now. The Rays seemingly have enough talent to give us some hope. (I think we need to figure a way to have the third place team in the AL East make the playoffs somehow.)

Dodgers, Choice 2
I love the dodgers, and I’ve been to more dodgers games than Bruin games this year, but:
Anything that includes making the people at SC suffer sometimes makes me happier than my own team winning.
I don’t handle the basketball team losing very well. I’m kinda used to the Dodgers losing and the football team being bad, but if I lose basketball I have no foundation left. I don’t think I can count on the Dodgers keeping me happy for the rest of my life like UCLA basketball does.

Dodgers,Choice 1
No matter how perfectly a top 3 finish or 6 wins set us up for the future, they’re still just setting up for the future, with no guarantee of a championship. While option 1 is less than optimal for the Bruins, it does guarantee some championship this year for one of my teams. And besides, fourth place in the Pac 10 in basketball still probably makes the tournament, and we can always go on a run.

A's, Choice 2
I’ve been a big Oakland fan ever since I was a kid watching guys like Walt Weiss, Dave Stewart, Terry Steinbach, and Rickey Henderson sweeping those scrub Giants in the World Series (notice the Bash Brothers are omitted since their dirty ways have been one of the biggest sports disappointments ever, at least for me).
That said, I am an A’s fan, but I am a Bruin. UCLA is like a family. It’s part of who I am. My local pro baseball team is a team I love following and getting behind, but I’m not, and never will be, part of the organization. I’m not an Athletic. Never will be.
But I am and always will be a Bruin. No matter where I go, where I live, or what I do, I will always feel connected to my alma mater and our sports programs.
Probably why I ended up here and never got around to Athletics Nation (although it’s a fantastic blog).

Dodger, Choice 1
Agree with Jaffa. If you were offering NC 105 in either BB or FB, I would choose that. I was negative 10 yrs old the last /only time FB shared the mythical NC title. They need to win it again before I die. Having said that, a championship is a championship. 1988 was magical for the Dodgers, and the pennance for it was 10 yrs with one playoff win, let alone a playoff series win. Torre has made a big difference, but he likely has only one more season left. A UCLA downturn in FB and BB can be overcome fairly quickly. CRN and CBH will continue to land their top prospects (how did CRN land consecutive 4-5 star recruits off of 2 losing efforts? — I digress), and the scenario given is not really that much worse in BB than what is being predicted. The Angels are my 2nd favorite MLB team, but I would pick choice 2 over them.

Giants, Choice 1
Winning the World Series isn’t really applicable in 2009, so I’ll assume this is 2010. I would have chosen choice 2 if this involved a UCLA national championship in basketball or football (actually, I think a BCS bowl game would be enough here for me to choose it), but since this was not a choice, I will go with choice 1.

Then if you ask the same question next year, it’ll be easy to choose the Bruins doing better.

Dodgers, Choice 1
A title means everything. I don’t see how choice 2 for UCLA is all that enticing… in fact, it’s down right mediocre, and we shouldn’t accept mediocre. The only consolation is that it doesn’t matter where Ben Howland’s boys end up in the regular season standings because the team will be ready for the post-season.
by UCLA4Life on Oct 17, 2009 1:42 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Both. Choice 2.
In HB, I grew up as a kid liking both the Angels and Dodgers, primarily because of the 77 and 78 Dodgers and 79 Angels. There was no interleague play so I didn’t really have to pick between them because they never played. Now, on the east coast, I still follow west coast baseball as much as possible (which, unfortunately, is not much since the games end so late and box scores aren’t in the next morning’s paper).
That having been said, UCLA football, is KING for me. As such, both could lose out the the next round and I wouldn’t be depressed all week like I was last week. It takes time for me get over UCLA losses. Plus, baseball has lost some luster for me in the last decade or so.

I’m a huge Dodgers fan. The last time the Dodgers won a world series was 1988. I was born in 1989. I’m a little selfish on this one, but especially after today’s game, I’m thinking that WS title > bowl game/decent finish. If the choice was World Series vs. Rose Bowl and/or Final Four , it’s probably Choice 2.
