BN Gameday: California Open Thread
California Golden Bears at UCLA Bruins, Oct 17, 2009 12:30 PM PDT
Here we go. During last two years we have talked a lot about how needed our defense to carry the team. Well no doubt we are going to need our defense to play exception against an explosive Cal offense. However, I think for us to get a win today we are going to need Kevin Prince to show the same steady leadership and game management skills he showed flashes off (for extensive stretches) during the first two games this season.
Hopefully Prince has shaken off the rust after being out from injury and is back to taking full control of this offense. We will need an outstanding defensive effort today and combine that worth an efficient, disciplined, and patient offense at the Rose Bowl. For that to happen we are going to need Kevin and his team-mates to step up and help the D.
The kickoff time is scheduled for 12:30 pm PST on ABC. If you still need to get caught up on all of our notes concerning this game, you can do so by checking out our full coverage here. If you are looking to track the game online you can also keep your tabs open to the official site and WWL.
So ready or not, here we go. Fire away.
GO BRUINS.

Wait, will they delay our game
if this OU/Texas game doesn’t get a move on? The fourth quarter barely just started.
Or will they switch?
I Used To Get It...
But then damn Comcast cut it off here in Twin Cities.

It is going to be interesting
OSU didn’t look very good offense. Unbelievably Tressel has faced some heat this year after their loss against $C*. Imagine he is going to face more questions when they get back to CBus.
Pryor despite the late heroics looked really sloppy.

That was a pretty weak penalty
Fair catch rule is so lame. Why don’t they just put on skirts and play flag football then?

Yeah he did
It came off the Cal player’s hands, and the interference by Thigpen was minimal at best.
by Bellerophon on Oct 17, 2009 12:47 PM PDT up reply actions
Fair to throw the flag
There was contact with the returner that ‘could’ have affected his ability to make the catch, but that should not be a 15-yard call. Not on a fair catch, at least.
now PLEASE stop them...

And if you watch his head, he’s not looking off the defenders. He’s locking on one receiver and it’s giving their DBs the time to react.

why are we seeing post game interviews from texas/oklahoma…this is ridiculous I WANNA SEE OUR GAME!!
Prince has been a shadow of his former self
Ever since he got his jaw busted at TN.
The kid just doesn’t have his head in the game it seems like. His throws are way off, he’s missing easy plays, and he has no clue what is happening around him.
If he’s our best option, that has me really concerned.
great job abc
theres a bunch of other games going on and you show Texas singing their alma mater…
We are not winning this game
Doesn’t look like we have any sense of urgency. You might as well just go with Prince.
And also TA is a f**king joke as a punt returner.

Game just came on
and we’re down 0-14. Neat.
Good thing I planned ahead and got a great BBQ tri-tip sandwich for this. Otherwise, I’d already be considering hari-kari.
GO BRUINS!!!
TA screws up again
If TA would learn to slow up, and let the four guys on his team behind him cach up and block the last man, he would have scored.
You can’t just sprint down the field, you need to learn when to shift gears to let a block develop.
You don't want to get caught from behind
or be stripped of the ball
What? Why did he not just keep running down the line?
Why turn in towards the middle when he only had one guy (presumably the kicker) to beat?
B.F.
He beat the kicker..
…but there was one Bear to beat. He could have cut inside, slowed his pace, let a block develop, then throw it on and hit the outside.
If we can actually knock it in and get a TD for once, it’s a moot point, but knowing our red zone offense, we’re getting only 3 points here.
ya perfect reverse jinx
found the game on espn classic im pumped!
William Doolittle at your service, a.k.a. will do.

Norrie in the Alumni tent
Might get beaten down for his recent efforts.
greg in denver - UCLA guy for life
Me too
It’s ridiculous. He doesn’t have the speed to do the job and he clearly doesn’t have the head to do it either.
Carroll and Thigpen have real speed and, like I said last week, anything we can do to get the ball in the hands of those two speedy playmakers, is good for our Bruins.
Thigpen must be entirely incapable of catching the ball
because Austin is clearly not getting it done…
B.F.
Wasn't Austin really good at returning punts last year?
Real question, not rhetorical.
I do not recall him as a serious threat. Ever.
But maybe the coaches consider him relatively consistent and not a liability. This may be the issue with some of our other speedsters – their inexperience could cause fumbles… I honestly don’t know why we stick with Austin.
B.F.
This team
has to take advantage of every opportunity. They aren’t good enough (yet) that they can let chances go by.. Gotta get TD’s instead of FG’s. Can’t give other teams first downs with penalties, can’t lose the turnover battle, and they have to make plays, like getting yards on punt returns when there is room.
greg in denver - UCLA guy for life
here's an example
3rd and 4. Easily convertible. Execute and keep the drive going, or make a mistake/take a penalty/get beaten by the D and give up the ball. Great teams make this. That’s what we are aiming to be.
greg in denver - UCLA guy for life

I like the idea
Getting the ball to MP is always a good idea, but the play wasn’t executed very well.
The CB was unblocked
our WR went inside, and their CB made a smart play and stayed home.
greg in denver - UCLA guy for life
I've never been a fan of the handoff to the TE
even if he is a hybrid like Pressley
I’d rather have him in open space vs a LB down the field and throw the ball to him.

Looked damn good.

the D has been ok. it’s just been the long plays. obviously it’s not a good showing overall, but for 85% of the plays we’ve been solid

I hate that rule
“Momentum carried it” into the end zone, so he can still down it. That’s weak. Once you touch it, it should be a live ball. No downing it. You shouldn’t get bailed out for being a screw up.
ND holds $C for three downs in red zone
FG now $C* up 10-7
USC Gets FG

tired of the negative coments about TA
he is reliable, and while he doesn’t house it, he will catch it and generally give us some positive return yards in the 10-15 yard variety. wait til someone muffs a punt and then see how you feel.
Terrance Austin is not a bad person
