WATCH number 22. I hate to single out Sheldon Price. The kid is a true freshman. Perhaps he is giving it all. But look at this play. Does he look like something who is doing everything he can to provide adequate run D support to his team-mates?

Perhaps Sheldon is not ready yet. Then that begs the question why isn't Viney in the game more? From what I can recall Viney did a great job covering, tackling, and helping with run defense in Tennessee. He served his one game suspension. Yet he is still not back.

Again, I don't want to just single out S. Prince. The tackling around LOS is obviously beyond atrocious. We look totally pathetic and hapless. This was a total team breakdown but it was just sad to see Price seemingly so outmatched and overwhelmed.

What is going on here? Thoughts?

Anyone want to dissect this highlight and tell us more about Chuck Bullough's defense?

GO BRUINS.

UPDATE: As noted convincingly by number of commenters in the thread below, it was indeed unfair to single out Sheldon Price. My apologies to SP. However, on the other hand this was a total fail on the part of our defense.

I like the decision to play Price

IIRC Viney even had size issues against SDSU, let alone a team like Cal, and he doesn’t quite seem talented enough to make up for it. Meanwhile, Price is far taller than Viney, and more talented as well- just not as experienced. He’ s even shown improvement since his first game, as he’s making fewer and fewer freshman mistakes that get us hit for penalties (unless I’m just missing the penalties, which is quite possible).

He’s a long way from the type of player that I hope we have at corner two years from now, but then again, I’m actually hoping that he will be the player that we have at corner in two years. For the moment, I’m all for getting younger, more talented players experience, because we’re going to need that experience in the next few years when we’re really starting to compete for something meaningful.

viney might be a few inches shorter

but he probably weighs twice what price does. I think viney has shown that he can cover and tackle better than price. I think price has the height and speed but isn’t ready to be a starter at this point.

Definitely a team screw up there

I don’t feel it is fair to single out Price on that one play. I do agree with you though, Nestor, that Price is having issues, but at the moment I don’t know if Viney has shown enough to replace him.

Watching that replay over and over again, it looks like our guys were sort of getting in each other’s way near the LOS (after the cutback, look how many of our guys are close to him), and after Best broke through to the second level, ATV blew a tackle where he was unblocked and should have at least slowed Best down (but gotta give it to Best, it was a nice juke). And after that, Best had two blockers in front of him with only one defender (Price) to beat, one threw the cut block and it was over after that. I don’t think that, given Price’s position on the play, it was realistic to expect him to bring Best down. Just a disastrous defensive play all around.

Agreed...singling out Price makes no sense

If anyone it is ATV that had the shot and was the man that was suppose to keep the play from going long. Price was coming from the other side.

Run defense

There is no doubt that Cal kept trying to run on Sheldon Price’s side. He has a difficult time shedding the receiver blocks. Surprisingly it was ATV who was burned twice for long touchdowns.

With our over aggressive defense, it opens the door for misdirections, trick plays, and big plays. I’m sure with 2 weeks to prepare, Cal found the holes in the Bruins’ defense.

I hope Aaron Hester gets back there soon.

Price

Shouldn’t really be making that play…on that run you could point to almost anyone on the defense, especially backside LB (who lines up on the line) and backside safety, Ayers and Dye. The frontside played it well, forced Best to cut back, but Akeem overpursued and missed the tackle, and Dye was caught too far inside (backside contain shouldn’t really be crossing the center). Looks like Reggie Carter takes too wide an angle as well and gets caught up in the wash. Rahim and the #55 Bosworth looked good, but there’s no way that Best should have gotten backside of everyone but ATV on that play, on a toss.

Sheldon Price has been struggling in run support over the past 3 weeks (as far as I’ve seen) but not on that play. Other Bruins missed tackles as well but if it were me in charge I’d be looking at those two.

this comment nails it

N, this really isn’t the play to look at if you want to examine Price’s struggles. He doesn’t do anything wrong there. He’s lined up at RCB and the play ends up going all the way to his left. By the time he’s in pursuit, Best has a convoy of blockers. I don’t really know what you were expecting Price to do at that point.

As jt34 said, the play really opened up when Ayers lost containment. Watching the play from the beginning, at the snap Ayers is lined up on the line standing at the far left of the DL. At first, he’s maintaining backside contain, but then he tries to make a tackle at the LOS and ends up overpursuing, fails to break down, and ends up diving past Best. That opens up the backside, and once Dye wasn’t able to get him, given Best’s speed, there wasn’t much left for anyone to do, other than hope Verner could make a shoestring tackle.

Again, I’m not arguing w/ the central point that Price is going through some growing pains. But this play is not an example of that.

I don't see how Price can be singled out there

He was not supposed to be near that play, ended up being forced to because of poor play up front, goes all the way across the field and then gets taken out by a cut block. I don’t see where his effort or heart can be called into question there either. Is he running full speed? No, but he’s not supposed to. You run full speed and Best cuts back, which is what happened to our defense up front. Price is lining up an angle and trying to use the sideline to his advantage. Some of our linebackers can take a lesson of using an angle there. Sure, he gets taken out, but he did the best he can in that situation.

yeah, you can do that downfield as long as you dont clip…only restrictions are within 10 yards of the LOS

Not fair to single out Price

I don’t seem Price being too timid at all…I saw a whole defense get worked over. Ugh.

Price?

Although I also don’t think Sheldon Price should be singled out on that play, it is obvious he is not near the level Viney showed against Tennessee. He just is not strong enough. He is 6’ 2" 165 lbs., to put that in perspective Brian Price is listed at 6’2" 300lbs. When I was at the game yesterday my friend and I were watching how Cal was going after Price not only with the pass, but more with the run. Every time they were running to his side of the field it was for big gains. Reicevers were knocking him 10 yards off the line of scrimage before the runner would even get there, and when he was in on the tackle they would drag him another 5 yards. He just cannot contain the corner. I think he will eventually become a good player, but he is just physicaly overwhelmed at this point .

Regarding Price

I wouldn’t single out Price on that play. Carter and Verner should have made that tackle. Verner got juked out of his socks. Sheldon Price has struggled this year but that is part of the growing pains when you play freshmen. I remember how brutal Carlton Gray was as a freshman. He turned out to be pretty good for us. We just have to be patient. The coaches know what they are doing. Neuheisel, Chow and Palcic have developed some great players. Rarely do you win conference titles with a freshman at quarterback.

not making any excuses, but is that a chop block on Price by Riley (#13?)?

0:17 mark of the video.

looks like it to me, or at least I’ve seen plays like that be called as such.
still, should have had him tackled inside the 10 yard line.

Legal chop block

It would have only been a penalty had he gotten him from behind.

by Ryan Rosenblatt on Oct 19, 2009 1:39 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

thanks - always fuzzy on what is/isn't a legal chop block

seems nasty no matter the circumstance, but again its not like Price was likely to catch or even slow down Best… just something that caught my eye.

Chop block is a combo block…high/low, low/high, or low/low….those are illegal. but one player cut blocking a defender is legal as long as you dont clip.

Price

I feel sorry for they guy, but he has cost us huge this year. Yes he is a true freshman, so it is somewhat understandable, but he has still cost us huge. It was him who let the long TD go in the SDSU game. He let up the long TD pass in the Stanford game. He let up some long long plays in the Oregon game. He let up some huge plays in the Cal game. When he has cost us a long TD in every game he has played in…come on. Viney has to be better than that. I agree with the point that his play is not necessarily his fault, but Cal did run right at him all game and did so successfully. Its like we were playing with 10 men.
When does Hester return?

Good positioning at point of attack, but...

…Ayers tries to make a big hit here and fails, Jerzy pulls himself off the turf just before getting knocked down a SECOND time, and in the process blocks any chance for Datone to make a backside play. We needed JS there and on his feet.

by Bluecaper on Oct 19, 2009 11:43 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree on Ayers going for the big hit – he seems to accelerate rather than break down and that’s what causes him to miss the tackle. I think Ayers does that alot…he reminds me of Dennis Keyes at safety, who would whiff on a few big hits and connect on a few…good to be aggressive, but you have to be smart and know when it is and is not a good decision. If he was frontside I would have liked to see that fire…the linebacker on that side, bosworth, #54 never gets off his block and is pushed back like 4 yards by a fullback. but if you are backside contain then you have to make the sure tackle. Dye is another young guy and he makes the same mistake.

This play really reminds me of our defensive play in 2005, when our defense would basically just chase the ball around the field without keeping much structure. I still remember desean jackson running the end-around against us as a true freshman at the 2005 game and scoring because absolute no one was there for us.
