Calling All Bruins Nation Readers In Oregon/Pacific Northwest

According to Jon Gold's UCLA blog at the Daily News:

UCLA's Week 8 matchup with Oregon State on Oct. 31 - Halloween - will be played at 1 p.m.
ABC did not choose to carry the game regionally, so the game will not be televised, due to the Pac-10 agreement with ABC. UCLA explored the options of playing at a time when the telecast could be done, but Oregon State thought it was in the best interest to play at 1 p.m.

If that's the case, we hope someone from BN who is attending the game in Corvallis can share his or her post game story/analysis based on actual eye witness account of  the game. I am sure you can imagine how difficult it is for someone to write a post game wrap based on the radio call of Chris Roberts or the ESPN game log or whatever. So help us out.

Remember, this game won't be televised anywhere in the nation. From what we're hearing, Oregon State doesn't want to change the game time because it is their homecoming and they have some related events on campus throughout the day. FOX can't pick up the game because ABC has an exclusive on the 12:30 - 3:30 window for their Pac 10 game of the week. So, there is a good chance that there is zero TV coverage of this game, unless someone convinces Oregon State to move start time to 3:30 or later.

If you want to help out Bruins Nation and your fellow Bruins by writing about the game, let us know.

Also, if you're planning to be at the game but can't write it up, post your Twitter accounts or something in the responses so that fellow Bruins can "follow" you and maybe you can throw up some tweets during the game. Or just bring a laptop or smart phone and post to our game chat throughout the day.

You gotta help the rest of us out.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Wish I could help

I live in Portland and always attend when UCLA plays in either Corvallis or Eugene. But this year we’re leaving for vacation on Friday the 30th (bad planning, I know) and will miss the game.

Well ...

if any of your Bruin friends are going, let them know the rest of us are interested in their comments.

This story

just pisses me off. 100’s of thousands of people want to watch that game and they can’t find a way to get it on tv.

by captainqtp on Oct 20, 2009 12:05 PM PDT reply actions

That's a whole other story ...

You know, when your conference has a deal with ESPN/ABC your games go up on the Direct TV college football package.

I see multiple Big Ten games on all the time in the same time slot.

But there is something about the Pac’s Fox/ABC deal that keeps games off the package.

Let’s pitch in some money, send Rye and 13-9 up there and make them podcast the game :) Might be the best commentary on a game ever.

Go Bruins!

You are on to something here H

That’s not a bad idea at all H.

I’d pitch in. That could be pretty interesting. (and of course they will pay no attention to me pining for Brehaut or getting exasperated with our defense … lol).

by Nestor on Oct 20, 2009 12:26 PM PDT up reply actions

I said it half in jest

but after I typed it up, I started to think about it a little. Economically, it would take probably about $750-1000 to fly somebody up, house them for a day or two, + game ticket cost. If we had 50 Bruins willing to spend $20 (cheaper than PPV) , we’d easily cover the cost.

Additionally, itt would be one hell of an opportunity for somebody wanting to get into radio/TV journalism. Heck, it might be something worth sponsoring a Daily Bruin writer who’s likely going anyhow to do this.

Go Bruins!

by Harsha on Oct 20, 2009 12:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah

I can see how it can possibly work. Heck it could potentially give us something to look forward to organize around after 4 straight losses (sadly I am not kidding).

by Nestor on Oct 20, 2009 1:08 PM PDT up reply actions

When I read that it wouldn't be on TV

I actually began thinking about making the trip up, but then I realized that I’m going to the World Cup in June and don’t have the money for it. Had I known about this before, I’d have foregone my trip to Knoxville and have gone to Corvallis instead. I’m going to see what I can do about getting up there though. Odds are it’s a no, but I’m going to work at it.

by Ryan Rosenblatt on Oct 20, 2009 1:28 PM PDT up reply actions

What do you think the cost would be? And if we figured out some way to fund a trip up there, would you be willing to do some sort of play-by-play & color commentary for us?

Go Bruins!

by Harsha on Oct 20, 2009 2:41 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm looking at it now

If I fly Southwest and make a stop, it’s about $375-400 for the flight. I don’t know if there’s a shuttle or bus or train or something that goes from Portland to Corvallis though, which would be necessary if I can’t convince my dad to join me and pick up the tab because I’m only 20 and therefor can’t rent a car.

I was hoping to fly back late Saturday night because then I’d only have to stay for a night, but the latest flight coming back wouldn’t get me back in time so I think I’ll have to stay 2 nights. Hotels, I’m still trying to figure out.

I think I may be able to manage the cash to make the trip. If I were there, I’d love to do some play by play or color commentary. Anything to help paint a picture of what was going on, but to do so I would need an internet connection, which is only possible with a press pass, which I doubt I’d be able to get.

by Ryan Rosenblatt on Oct 20, 2009 4:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah that does seem unlikely at this point. Thanks for thinking about it though :)

Go Bruins!

by Harsha on Oct 20, 2009 5:35 PM PDT up reply actions

I have a better idea

Send me. First class seat from Tampa would be about $5,000. I would be the color man, and I wouldn’t say anything, I promise. That way, not even I would be able to say that the broadcaster ruined the game for me. Now if the play by play guy would just keep quiet, it would be the perfect broadcast.

I will need an extra $5,000 for expenses, so I suppose a check for $15,000 would cover everything. But to be safe, better send $20,000. Or more.

by Fox 71 on Oct 20, 2009 5:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Wow

Even when you’re the commentator, you’d still turn the volume down. I do admire your consistency.

I just need

A flight home, otherwise I’m all set. I have to work Sunday morning, so there aren’t any returning flights on saturday night

Too bad there isn't a late flight

I think I’m going to go. I’m trying to figure out how to make it happen, but I believe I’ll be able to do it.

Too bad I wouldn’t be able to provide any in-game commentary or analysis though.

by Ryan Rosenblatt on Oct 20, 2009 9:39 PM PDT up reply actions

I have an idea

but you would have to be solo on it for the 1st quarter, I could leave the talk shoe window open when I leave, and get someone to hit record. We’ll be on our phones the entire game though.

Oregon State Beats USC in LA!!!!

We all know we would love that scenario……it has happened before in Corvallis after all. Anyway, ABC/ESPN might jump to cover the Beavers the subsequent week. I sent an email to ABC/ESPN to complain re. lack of coverage——a long shot at best, but maybe more BN folks could do the same

by bruinmom on Oct 20, 2009 3:28 PM PDT reply actions

goddamn!

Not only will I have to study for some south campus midterms, but I won’t be able to properly distract myself by watching the game.

Let’s all recommend this up folks – so we can keep it up here for a while – and use it as a possible organizing thread for Oregon State.

I'm booked.

I’ll be more than happy to broadcast it live on talk shoe

Boy, do I feel technologically challenged

I assumed af first that “talk shoe” was some kind of typo, and thought it was sort of funny because it obviously conjured up images of Maxwell Smart and his shoe phone. After further review, that ruling is overturned. I guess there is something called “talk shoe.” It doesn’t much make any difference to me, though, because I don’t really know what a “pod cast” is. (I assume anything I don’t recognize is a porn site or something that will melt my computer, and I am required to get away from the computer immediately and call Mrs. Fox 71 when I see something like that.)

The good news about being born to late to understand all this is that whey I was the age of all you computer-literate folks, our head coach was John Robert Wooden, and life was always good during basketball season.

Game is on TV now...but not live

Prime Ticket and FSNW will be at the game to televise it. Kickoff is still at 1:00 however b/c of the ABC exclusivity mentioned above, Fox cannot begin showing the game until 3:30. So they will broadcast it on tape delay.

For us LA folk, it will be just like what KCAL 9 did for years with Lakers road games on weeknights when they wanted to wait to broadcast it until more people got home from work. In other words, it will suck. But at least it’s on tv, I suppose.

by insomniacslounge on Oct 21, 2009 3:06 PM PDT reply actions

I always hated the delayed broadcast

I never had the willpower to not look at the ESPN ticker on the website with the scores so I’d always end up spoiling it.

Question for you guys

Because the game is being showed on 2 1/5 hour delay, if I were to figure out some way to provide in-game commentary with some analysis of what was going on and a description of the big plays (something to accompany a radio broadcast or gamecast), how many of you guys would be reading it or are you going to try and wait to watch the delayed broadcast without knowing what was going on?

by Ryan Rosenblatt on Oct 23, 2009 10:36 AM PDT reply actions

Due to legality

Our “in-depth” quality will be severely crippled. So hopefully we can do a halftime/wrap up or something

There's no one in the world that wants to beat UCLA more than _______.

by ucla13_usc9 on Oct 23, 2009 3:11 PM PDT up reply actions

I'll be keeping track regardless of the TV scheduling...

I would welcome whatever commentary and insights that you could offer on the game.

Do be sure that whatever you two are able to provide is acceptable re. the NCAA, as I do recall a blogger getting reprimanded a few years ago for writing a live blog from an event (baseball tourney game, iirc).

by bruinhoo on Oct 24, 2009 12:08 PM PDT up reply actions

As long as you are dealing with legal issues

Maybe you could create your own float, a la Animal House, drive around on the field, wreaking havoc and delaying the opening kickoff by 2.5 hours. Then FoxSports can broadcast the game live and the problem will be solved.
