It's not the X's and O's, It's the Jimmies and Joes

It is shocking how little talent is on this offense.  Whether it is throwing, catching, blocking or running; it is all being performed at a less than Pac-10 level.  If you have seen any of the other Pac-10 games this weekend, you can see clearly that other than Franklin, these kids don't play on a Pac-10 level.  Why are there so may penalties?  It's because they know their overmatched.  Mostly it's the fact that were shockingly slow.  We can't make the blocks and execute the plays.  Let's face it, we have guys on schlarship that would be walk-ons at SC.  If you are waiting for this group to win games in this conference, you are waiting in vain.

I'm not going to absolve the coaching in this either.  Some of these guys played last year and appeared to have potential.  Many (the receiving corps) seem to have actually regressed.  These people aren't making junior high plays.  Some have been calling out the defense.  5 turnovers = 0 offensive touchdowns.  That's not a defensive issue.  They are average but at least they are Pac-10 worthy.

Once again we are treated to the airshow crash, that is our once again bowl-less season.  It's not entertaining, it's not progressing, and it is not winning.  Maybe these guys just can't be coached up, but Neuheisel's got to know that this seasons pass expires after we get worked over in the Coliseum.  Bruin Nation will not take this abuse of our athletic tradition next season.  The pressure is on.

I think that it is both.

Plenty of blame to go around. Players not making basic plays. Coaches not putting the players in the position to win. Coaches not exploiting matchups. In the big picture, it is the coaches’ responsibility for making sure that the players improve. They aren’t. I am not sure the Bruins could beat SDSU right now. That team appears to be improving.

Disagree.

I think we have plenty of talent. The frustration lies in the underdeveloped play of our athletes. It is true that talent plays a big part of performance at this level of athletic competition, but you would be amazed how little is involved in playing basic fundamental football. It does not take talent to hit a guy, or block someone, the majority of it is repetition, game play, and coaches putting people in the right position to make the play.

The catch phrase you borrowed may have been true in the days of Woody Hayes and his 3 yards and a cloud of dust. But Football in the modern age is very much about scheme vs scheme. For example, Oregon State has perennially recruited ‘no name’ athletes, and yet Riley has repeatedly gotten the most from his ‘talent pool’ and as recently as last night competed well against USC.

That’s coaching.

That's coaching guys who have been in your program for a few years

How many teams win games with the amount of youth and inexperience we have? It’s also very difficult to improve when you don’t have the depth up and down your roster, so you don’t have the talent and maturity to compete against in practice every day. This isn’t to say the coaches have done the world’s greatest job, but this lies more on the players than anyone else and since the players are giving their all, it’s just the talent in the upperclassmen that is lacking, this lies on the previous regime.

Just my $0.02

Poor athletes + poor coaching = terrible
Great athletes + poor coaching = average, you will beat most of the teams you “should” beat because of your talent advantage (ie, see teams that trample over their conference and mid-major OOC games and then fall flat in bowl games against well-coached teams)
Poor athletes + great coaching = above average, you will beat the teams you “should” beat as well as some you “should not” beat
Great athletes + great coaching = you will do well

I think you need to look at the coaches for heavily penalized teams, especially if it’s stuff like false starts and offsides that is 100% avoidable. Players that commit things like holding or blocking penalties are often using poor technique and footwork, or are tired and then regressing to poor technique – coach should be responsible for both. Same for players that miss tackles, they are either not practicing proper technique and leverage or are just tired and trying to dive or arm tackle. Players that drop passes may not be using proper technique as well – after hearing the comment that these guys are able to make the catches in practice, makes me believe that it’s a technique issue as well – under the lights on gameday, when the pressure is on and you struggle to concentrate you will regress to poor technique unless you have been well-coached and the correct arm extension, focus, and looking the ball into your hands is ingrained into your mind through repetition in practice. Coughing up the football is definitely a technique issue – players who rarely fumble know how to carry the ball and do not get careless, this is something that needs to be stressed on the practice field as well.

I think UCLA has plenty of talent. I don’t pay attention to the recruiting rankings but our players do not look any smaller, slower, or weaker than the guys on the other sideline. I have yet to see a game where we get physically dominated. If you want to call out our guys for not being able to get off blocks, I think that that is also a technique issue, it is one of the four fundamental defensive skills. I don’t think that any of our guys would have been recruited to play D-I football at a Pac-10 school if they did not have physical talent – it’s a matter of being able to use that talent. I think that all the mistakes are fixable, there are no physical limitations. If you are physically able to make the play, then the only roadblock is mental – technique, footwork, angles, and movements that are installed by the coaches.

Making Blocks

Is a key weakness. Whether it is technique, scheme or just being out athleted. watch the tape of the last game and see how many blitzes are picked up, see how many guys whiff on guys who blew up the play. These plays seem fine for the most part, there is just no execution. I don’t see the talent. When guys aren’t making catch’s you and I could make that’s poor coaching? The lines are slow. You can’t coach fast. There obviously are ways to coach technique around this and I don’t see that either. I’m just sayin, look at the other teams in our conference and look at your personnel. There are no upperclassmen who can really play and lead on offense.
