BN Gameday: Stanford Second Quarter Thread

Jet Ski is off to a solid start in Palo Alto. However, we have to cut down on penalties and silly mental mistakes. Getting burned by holding calls and bad route running early on.

Bruins down 3-7 but we have a long way to go.

Fire away.

GO BRUINS.

if nobody was open...

…i like that Craft pulled it down. smart.

by mwright84 on Oct 3, 2009 1:18 PM PDT reply actions

because Craft isn’t much of a passer. He has a line to protect him so I don’t expect a whole lot of turnovers but I’m still not sold on his passing ability at this level on a consistent basis.

Wow, the stats are not looking good for us. Lets get this going!

Now that I'm caught up with the game I can comment.

Since I live in the South and don’t get the west coast ABC feed, I’m paying DirecTV for the game. Worth it!

We are in danger zone now

If we cannot find a way to stop them.

by Nestor on Oct 3, 2009 1:23 PM PDT reply actions

They seem to be running & throwing almost at will. We badly need a reset, on D & O

by impaulv on Oct 3, 2009 1:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Moore had momentum.

I don’t think he had time to stop or change direction. Bad call.

by LongtimeBru on Oct 3, 2009 1:24 PM PDT reply actions

we are not

a not a top tier defense right now. D line getting pushed back and our DBs are giving HUGE cushions

by mwright84 on Oct 3, 2009 1:24 PM PDT reply actions

Bruins are getting shredded.

Every time they make a play or two on O or on D, they shoot themselves in the foot.

by orlandobruin on Oct 3, 2009 1:24 PM PDT reply actions

We can stop Gearhart up the middle

but the outside is killing us….our OLB’s are getting eaten up

I cannot believe this

Desperate Housewives is still on TV?

by UCLABruins4Ever on Oct 3, 2009 1:25 PM PDT reply actions

We are not going to beat Stanford with field goals

We need to score touchdowns – not just field goals. It is pretty obvious that Chow doesn’t trust Craft to throw the ball downfield. If you don’t trust your QB, why is he in there? Also, penalties again are hurting us. We wasted 3 passing plays when we could have run for a 1st down and then try to score a touchdown. I think Craft is a great kid, but let’s give Brehaut a try.

by Forever a Bruin on Oct 3, 2009 1:25 PM PDT reply actions

But but… FGs are our specialty!!!!

by impaulv on Oct 3, 2009 1:26 PM PDT up reply actions

I think you are way ahead of yourself on that

He is calling deep passing plays…that 3rd and 20-something was a pass…Craft just didn’t see it and ran it instead

YOU don’t trust Craft…that;s different. Our team is killing themselves with penalties today

by UCLABruins4Ever on Oct 3, 2009 1:27 PM PDT up reply actions

the bigger problem right now is our

Defense… no way we win this game if they don’t tighten — I don’t care what the offense does, if the D doesn’t straighten up this will be over by the half

by wsmontano1994 on Oct 3, 2009 1:28 PM PDT up reply actions

our guys have been take bad penalties

at bad times all year – the trend must be stopped for a successful season

by Nakatomi Plaza on Oct 3, 2009 1:25 PM PDT reply actions

Have to say

their OL is man handling us right now. But we have killed ourselves with penalties.

by Nestor on Oct 3, 2009 1:26 PM PDT reply actions

the stats (and our defense) would say yeah…

by impaulv on Oct 3, 2009 1:26 PM PDT up reply actions

yes they will

and even worse, it comes on a long, slow, wear down the D line, drive. Craft has to got to work a clock consuming, give the D a blow, drive on the next possession of this could get ugly

by mwright84 on Oct 3, 2009 1:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Is it just me

or are people starting to show negative vibe around here?

by drebruin on Oct 3, 2009 1:27 PM PDT reply actions

I think

It’s been a frustrating start so far. So I get the restlessness a bit. However, this is not on Craft.

by Nestor on Oct 3, 2009 1:28 PM PDT up reply actions

you're right

we’re too used to false optimism being crushed in mid-season…

by mwright84 on Oct 3, 2009 1:29 PM PDT up reply actions

they dont need to throw downfield….. just throw some nice slants and get some blocks

by westwood12003 on Oct 3, 2009 1:27 PM PDT reply actions

On offense

we seem to move the ball well on the ground, but took bad penalties and didn’t finish

On defense – we take a penalty to extend their drive

I don’t think ucla is being outplayed, but stanford’s execution is just much better at this point in the game

by Nakatomi Plaza on Oct 3, 2009 1:28 PM PDT reply actions

Disagree..

Their offense is embarrasing our defense

by impaulv on Oct 3, 2009 1:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Their O-line is creating too much room for their running game, which is opening up their passing game. And their D is holding up to our Offense

by impaulv on Oct 3, 2009 1:31 PM PDT up reply actions

how is that not being out-played?

by impaulv on Oct 3, 2009 1:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Uhm

We are also giving up cheap yards.

by Nestor on Oct 3, 2009 1:32 PM PDT up reply actions

in a way, but

the penalty extends the drive – if not, they punt – and damage controlled on that drive….

but they are exerting their will on the line

by Nakatomi Plaza on Oct 3, 2009 1:33 PM PDT up reply actions

agree on the penalty part

by impaulv on Oct 3, 2009 1:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Not really

Their offense is doing the same thing to our defense it did last year. If we execute we should be ok.

by Nestor on Oct 3, 2009 1:32 PM PDT up reply actions

nope

just frustration… we have them to rights on 3rd down and we give them a gift

We get the ball in the second half

So we can cut the lead even more

I'll take it.

Bruins played about as bad as possible and still only down by one score.

by orlandobruin on Oct 3, 2009 2:01 PM PDT reply actions

go for it?

kc was on a roll did we have enough to put up 6? I think I wouldve gone for it.

Better to make sure you get something

Gambling that you’ll score from 17 yards out isn’t worth it.

by SuperBruinMan on Oct 3, 2009 2:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Good turn around at the end of the half

They were driving to go up 21-3, instead its 14-6 at the half. The game is manageable now, down one score and a 2 pt conv.

by Give me a B... on Oct 3, 2009 2:02 PM PDT reply actions

Right now

The difference is Stanford’s 2nd TD, which they only got because of Moore’s penalty.

Going Into The Locker Room......

We’re damn fortunate we’re only down by a TD; could be a helluva lot worse. BUT – we’re only down 1 score. We’ve GOT to get a long, controlled drive going early on in the 3rd quarter to take the wind out of their sails and keep our “D” off the field. And CUT DOWN ON THE STUPID MISTAKES!!!!

Los Angeles Rams and the UCLA Bruins!!!!!

send a real message

to open the second half… with a LONG TD drive and a TWO-POINT conversion… then it is on! we can still not only win this game, but CONTROL it. Totally up to us. We proved we’re as good or even better than this team. Great bounce back those last five min. Go Bruins!

Don't need the 2 pt. conv. yet.

“The book” says you wait until later in the game to make that move.

by orlandobruin on Oct 3, 2009 2:05 PM PDT up reply actions

wouldn't make a difference if we miss

it would if we do convert though

How do you know it wouldn't make a difference?

There’s an entire half to play and you have no idea what will happen. If Stanford gets two field goals the rest of the way and we get a late touchdown, then we need to go for two again instead of kicking the extra point for the tie.

You can’t predict the scores of 30 minutes of football so you have no idea if it will make a difference.

Stanford D is not that good

it’s their offense that is carrying them. If our D can play the second half the way they did the last few minutes, we are in good shape

by LongtimeBru on Oct 3, 2009 2:05 PM PDT reply actions

Why do people think the 2-minute offense works all the time?

it ONLY works if you are actually fighting the clock because the D is backing off trying to not give up a big play. If you start out with a 2-minute offense, they don’t need to back off and it won’t work.

It is not that complicated

Craft

has really played well today. I hope we throw it up a bit more in the 2nd. He seems confident.

by dproduct on Oct 3, 2009 2:05 PM PDT reply actions

he’s not being asked to do much, we just need to get the sync down between him & his targets

by impaulv on Oct 3, 2009 2:05 PM PDT up reply actions

We have great talent. We need to show it on the field. Limit mistakes, make tackles

by impaulv on Oct 3, 2009 2:05 PM PDT reply actions

It appears as if Bullough is coaching scared

There’s such a thing as too much respect. He is so concerned with the Stanford running game that he hasn’t used any blitzes, stunts, twists or anything up front that could in any way put pressure on Luck or confuse him.

We’re going to need Luck to make a mistake at some point and we can’t do it by sitting around and waiting for it. We need to go force something and can only do it with pressure and creativity. Luck is far too comfortable. Time to make you adjustments Coach.

by Ryan Rosenblatt on Oct 3, 2009 2:05 PM PDT reply actions

Exactly, the QB has too much time

by impaulv on Oct 3, 2009 2:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed

It’s been a very simple defense – and luck has been able to read it very well.

I think we gotta mix things up a little more, this is a freshman QB!

by bruin1999 on Oct 3, 2009 2:07 PM PDT up reply actions

if not for a few penalties and lucky bounces (two fumbles falling right into their hands), this game is 6-7. No excuses, we need to come out and beat them into the turf in the 2nd half.

by hicalliber on Oct 3, 2009 2:07 PM PDT reply actions

These commentators are awful

They’re just wrong about what’s happening so often.
