BN Gameday: Stanford Second Quarter Thread
Jet Ski is off to a solid start in Palo Alto. However, we have to cut down on penalties and silly mental mistakes. Getting burned by holding calls and bad route running early on.
Bruins down 3-7 but we have a long way to go.
Fire away.
GO BRUINS.

Gotta Shut These Guys Down NOW

Now that I'm caught up with the game I can comment.
Since I live in the South and don’t get the west coast ABC feed, I’m paying DirecTV for the game. Worth it!
Boz!!
making solid reads and tackles this year
Bosworth
making up for the whiff on the touchdown
Anyone else hope
they don’t start the outside toss plays again?
what the hell
was he thinking? you can’t do that! idiotic.
Poor decision by Moore on that one
by DannyJay01 on Oct 3, 2009 1:21 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
if he plays the ball
it’s an INT – such a bad play all the way around
we are not
a not a top tier defense right now. D line getting pushed back and our DBs are giving HUGE cushions
Bruins are getting shredded.
Every time they make a play or two on O or on D, they shoot themselves in the foot.
We can stop Gearhart up the middle
but the outside is killing us….our OLB’s are getting eaten up
We are not going to beat Stanford with field goals
We need to score touchdowns – not just field goals. It is pretty obvious that Chow doesn’t trust Craft to throw the ball downfield. If you don’t trust your QB, why is he in there? Also, penalties again are hurting us. We wasted 3 passing plays when we could have run for a 1st down and then try to score a touchdown. I think Craft is a great kid, but let’s give Brehaut a try.
I think you are way ahead of yourself on that
He is calling deep passing plays…that 3rd and 20-something was a pass…Craft just didn’t see it and ran it instead
YOU don’t trust Craft…that;s different. Our team is killing themselves with penalties today

the bigger problem right now is our
Defense… no way we win this game if they don’t tighten — I don’t care what the offense does, if the D doesn’t straighten up this will be over by the half

our guys have been take bad penalties
at bad times all year – the trend must be stopped for a successful season
yes they will
and even worse, it comes on a long, slow, wear down the D line, drive. Craft has to got to work a clock consuming, give the D a blow, drive on the next possession of this could get ugly
Is it just me
or are people starting to show negative vibe around here?
you're right
we’re too used to false optimism being crushed in mid-season…
On offense
we seem to move the ball well on the ground, but took bad penalties and didn’t finish
On defense – we take a penalty to extend their drive
I don’t think ucla is being outplayed, but stanford’s execution is just much better at this point in the game
Their O-line is creating too much room for their running game, which is opening up their passing game. And their D is holding up to our Offense
in a way, but
the penalty extends the drive – if not, they punt – and damage controlled on that drive….
but they are exerting their will on the line
by Nakatomi Plaza on Oct 3, 2009 1:33 PM PDT up reply actions
Not really
Their offense is doing the same thing to our defense it did last year. If we execute we should be ok.
It's already a long f*#king day

Was that Ayers that got pancaked?
Embarrassing…
I don't know if I'd agree that he's "not that great"
but I do agree that a lot of the credit has to go to the stanford OL
not being sarcastic....
but how? seriously? I want to be optimistic…. what’s going to turn this around?
and...
our coaching staff knew what was coming …. Gerhart and more Gerhart…. had two weeks to prepare…. and couldn’t game a plan a way to make Luck beat us? WTF?
mwright
you registered on BN to comment today … and posting nothing but negative crap. I get you are frustrated but if you want to just troll with negative comments find another place. Consider this a warning and your last one. Thanks.
it's early...
we can come right back with a solid drive now and send a message in return… it gives the D some time to re-evaluate and rest a bit…
W.S. Montano Class of 1994
agree
going to check my skepticism, for at least this drive… go Bruins… long drive
No you will have to watch your skepticism the whole thread
We are not going to give first commenter a lot of leeaway.

200 yards given up so far,
gotta tighten things up D – offense has got to give them a rest.
Looks like Stanford

doing a good job calling those out

B) running terrible routes

We're Showing We CAN Move the Ball
We just gotta get a good dri W/O freaking penalties.

Well at least the kicking looks good

we look horribly unfocused out there
these penalties, missed routes, and dropped balls are destroying us
wow
not much going right so far. cmon, get the stop, no penalties
the reality is that they MUST
stop them on this drive. They seriously have to.
W.S. Montano Class of 1994
They just look flat right now
Hopefully halftime adjustment can turn this around
by DannyJay01 on Oct 3, 2009 1:41 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
damnit - they're just picking us apart
we have no idea what play they’re calling
now -
can’t stop run and no pressure = long day
I almost wish
we had a real BRUISER like Gerhart.. it’s been a long long time since we’ve had a runner of that nature

OMg, 6 of 6 on 3rd down! Damnit
And that was pretty good coverage and a great catch
Well we can't blame poor defense and tackling on Craft
A coach is someone who can give correction without causing resentment. John Wooden
geez
where is the tackling? stanford line pushing them around
Wow, first blitz I've seen
And Luck sees it and makes the perfect play.
Somebody check

Fumble
YES it is, but these are PAC-10 Officials!!
Too bad you can't call a penalty on reviews
Pretty blatent intentional grounding there
by DannyJay01 on Oct 3, 2009 1:48 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
If it's ruled a forward pass
Can they then call a penalty for intentional grounding?
I thought you couldn’t call a penalty based on a review?
options
1. fumble
2. down by contact
3. incomplete
they’re going with incomplete – sptr’s…. be prepared
WOW
Furd is playing great. We’re playing like crap AND the officials are against us?
A coach is someone who can give correction without causing resentment. John Wooden
At least it's now 3rd and 10
First time I remember a long 3rd down, HOLD D!!!
That call sucks big time....
Why do most home teams get the call, exceptg for us!!!
There we go!!!
Now let’s see if the let craft go with the 2 minute drill
by DannyJay01 on Oct 3, 2009 1:52 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
If we can get out of this first half
Only down 11 or even sneak in a FG … it would be huge for our momentum.
No huddle for Craft?
I guess that worked last year
sure that wasn't
an incomplete pass too, may want to review
That was a pretty little spin move

WTF with the return team?
that Stanford guy didn’t even get blocked!
our D
is showing some life and some fire… hopefully they buckle down from here on out… given how they’ve moved the ball, we’re kind of lucky there’s only 14 on the board… we need at least 3 on this mini drive here
W.S. Montano Class of 1994
How about a penalty on that hit on craft?!?

I Would Imagine That CRN's Gonna Do Some Serious Yelling In The Locker Room

Why a TO??????
Now wee need to get out of bounds otherwise no time for the FG team
should they have taken the TO with 6 secs?
that way if there’s an issue with the FG they have a chance for another?
very nice drive
but i would have liked to have seen a shot at the end zone
by insomniacslounge on Oct 3, 2009 1:59 PM PDT reply actions
I think that play
Was designed to have a shot at the end zone but to leave a safety valve in the middle of the field in case you don’t have any options.
by DannyJay01 on Oct 3, 2009 2:02 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
This might sound crazy
But why not start off the second half with the no huddle?

so far, that is pretty much what has worked!

I like the energy
to close the 2nd half.
New thread, N?
Craft has played really solid
If our receivers were running clean route early on, we would have been on.
We get the ball in the second half
So we can cut the lead even more
http://www.gamereplays.org/community/uploads/post-51050-1239346568.jpg
go for it?
kc was on a roll did we have enough to put up 6? I think I wouldve gone for it.
by bruinED on Oct 3, 2009 2:02 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
Better to make sure you get something
Gambling that you’ll score from 17 yards out isn’t worth it.
by SuperBruinMan on Oct 3, 2009 2:05 PM PDT up reply actions
Good turn around at the end of the half
They were driving to go up 21-3, instead its 14-6 at the half. The game is manageable now, down one score and a 2 pt conv.
Going Into The Locker Room......
We’re damn fortunate we’re only down by a TD; could be a helluva lot worse. BUT – we’re only down 1 score. We’ve GOT to get a long, controlled drive going early on in the 3rd quarter to take the wind out of their sails and keep our “D” off the field. And CUT DOWN ON THE STUPID MISTAKES!!!!
Los Angeles Rams and the UCLA Bruins!!!!!
by Minnesota Bruinfan on Oct 3, 2009 2:02 PM PDT reply actions
send a real message
to open the second half… with a LONG TD drive and a TWO-POINT conversion… then it is on! we can still not only win this game, but CONTROL it. Totally up to us. We proved we’re as good or even better than this team. Great bounce back those last five min. Go Bruins!
W.S. Montano Class of 1994
wouldn't make a difference if we miss
it would if we do convert though

by wsmontano1994 on Oct 3, 2009 2:06 PM PDT up reply actions
How do you know it wouldn't make a difference?
There’s an entire half to play and you have no idea what will happen. If Stanford gets two field goals the rest of the way and we get a late touchdown, then we need to go for two again instead of kicking the extra point for the tie.
You can’t predict the scores of 30 minutes of football so you have no idea if it will make a difference.

Just read on Wikipedia (which is always correct)
That the Force parents are lifelong Wolverine fans.
Stanford D is not that good
it’s their offense that is carrying them. If our D can play the second half the way they did the last few minutes, we are in good shape
Why do people think the 2-minute offense works all the time?
it ONLY works if you are actually fighting the clock because the D is backing off trying to not give up a big play. If you start out with a 2-minute offense, they don’t need to back off and it won’t work.
It is not that complicated
Craft
has really played well today. I hope we throw it up a bit more in the 2nd. He seems confident.
It appears as if Bullough is coaching scared
There’s such a thing as too much respect. He is so concerned with the Stanford running game that he hasn’t used any blitzes, stunts, twists or anything up front that could in any way put pressure on Luck or confuse him.
We’re going to need Luck to make a mistake at some point and we can’t do it by sitting around and waiting for it. We need to go force something and can only do it with pressure and creativity. Luck is far too comfortable. Time to make you adjustments Coach.
