Mike Leach Blames TT's Ugly Loss On Players "Fat Little Girlfriends"
Surprised no one has taken note of this story yet considering how many wanted Mike Leach and how breathlessly Brian Dohn blogged about Leach's interest in UCLA. From Lubbock, Texas:
Last
This(BN Ed.) weekend's loss 52-30 to Texas A&M made a frustrated Texas Tech Coach Mike Leach say some harsh workds about his players' love lives. He blamed the loss to the Aggies, in part, on their "fat little girlfriends." That comment, repeated a couple times during the press conference Saturday night is now garnering national attention.
Some people in Lubbock, Texas got a laugh, while others were truly offended. One man even set up a website called fat-little-girlfriend dot com. As of Wednesday night, his site already had four-thousand hits. He insists it's all in good fun and means no offense to Red Raider fans.
But for the girlfriends of the team, it's no laughing matter.
Coach Leach said Saturday night he wouldn't apologize. He said the same thing Monday night.
Here is the video of it:
Got it via SBN.
I don't care what Leach does in Lubbock. That is not our problem. However, how do you think the Bruin community would react if he had made those comments as the Bruin head coach after a tough loss during rebuilding season? Not asking that question to attack Leach at all. I think he is a great coach and he has nothing to prove. However, this kind of stories makes you think a little about whether certain coaches would be the right fit for our community.
Just something to think about.
GO BRUINS.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Unacceptable
Unacceptable from a coach of young men, unacceptable from a representative of a university, unacceptable from a man, and unacceptable that he hasn’t apologized.
If a UCLA coach said something as not only offensive, but downright dumb and immature, as this, I would be outraged.

It was wrong, but ...
I think ML was using the term metaphorically — not literally.
In the context of the entire statement, I think he was talking about the praise posses, the hangers on to all things that glitter — I much prefer the Hollywood term “star fucker” — that convince people in the lime light that they can do no wrong, the people who give them swelled heads, and the people who detract form their discipline and focus.
In that sense “girl friends” includes both genders — and including sycophantic men in the group demeans them in ways that really make the point.
However, any one with an ounce of awareness would have found another metaphor. Leach did something stupid.
Our community would not tolerate it.
And, he should apologize.

PS. I was one of the strongest Leach supporters here. I still think he is a great coach. But, from the moment CRN stepped on this campus I knew that I was wrong and that DG was right.

No doubt it wouldn't fly here
And that’s a knock on us, not Leach.
Our “community” — the ingrained, administrative side of it — are a bunch of lame-brained, humorless, bureaucratic boobs. They are, in a sense, the fat little girlfriends of Terry Donahue. (And Albert Carnesale was the fat little girlfriend of Lavin.)
So, yeah, it wouldn’t have been a smooth fit. By the way, Ben Howland isn’t a smooth personality fit, either, which is why you hear so much carping about him from the FLGFs. So I’m really doubting how important it is for that fit to be smooth.
I thought CRN would be the kind of guy who knew exactly what he’s dealing with and therefore would be able to CHANGE IT — slowly, subtly, but effectively — but right now we’re seeing that maybe he’s a product of it to some incurable degree. Fitting with a lousy administrative community is only a good thing if the plan is to change it most effectively. Otherwise, it needs an alien from outer space.

How does this happen every time?
People misinterpret messages all the time on BN, especially MY messages lol. I guess it was AP World/US History and DBQs that made me look liberally at these things, because:
I think that Leach was saying that the players were more concerned with their status off the field; which obviously wasn’t an isolated incident because he isn’t Lane Kiffin (No filter), and is actually a genius (intellectually as well as a football coach) to some degree.

I don't find his comments offensive.
I’m with ’66 and ucla13 – I think he took an insensitive path to saying his players are believing their press clippings. The fact that he uses the term “fat little girlfriends” leads me to believe it was a pointed comment directed to a specific individual or a group of players who would know they had just been singled out.
PS: Oh yeah, UCLA would be hemoraghing and foaming at the lips. The LA Slimes would blow it completely out of proportion and omit parts of his comment further inflaming the passions of those who did not have access to the source material. He would resign or be forced out under pressure.

No matter how you slice it...
Metaphorically or literally, Leach is an idiot for making a sexist remark, over and over and over again. He is a poor representative for his university and College Football. Sure am glad he is not our coach. I would love to hear from the BN ladies regarding this ass.

Amongst Those Who Care, The Politically Correct Term
is not “ladies” it is “women”.
Many in the women’s movement view the term “lady” to be sexist. “Lady” was seen as symbol of “class” and, therefore, one that discriminated against the majority of women. “Women” was a gender term and viewed as egalitarian.
In some places, you’d be chastised for making that mistake.

Actually, the fat little girlfriends
Are the media… and us. He is saying that they are stupid, and they heard about how great they were with their win over Nebraska, KSU, etc. and then were cocky and didn’t show up to play. I still don’t understand why that could be sexist… but then again, we do live in Liberal Calfornia, and they live in Texas

I'm probably one of the most liberal/left people in BN and
I live in Texas.
I think this whole thing is foolish by any standard, anywhere. And, I doubt the feminists that I know would waste one moment worrying about it.
Now, the fat little people I know are really pissed, but that’s a different story.

Can we hear from the Fat Little People on BN?
Are you deeply offended?

Ya this has been
blown way out of proportion. Leach isn’t an ass either, he’s very respectable IMO

Leach
I am glad to hear your takes on it but I am more interested in hearing womens’ take on this here on BN.
You can speculate all you want but if Leach was coaching at a Pac-10 school in either California, Oregon or Washington, he would have been apologizing by the middle of game week and face more intense scrutiny.
Again, I am glad to here your takes on it but I am more interested in hearing from our women readers here on BN on this issue.

I think the criticism is a little over the top
I have grown wider although not necessarily wiser as I progress through Geezerhood. I have heard all the old jokes and all the fat jokes, plus all the lawyer jokes and the California jokes. They’re not that big a thing to me, and neither were Leach’s remarks. At the same time, there are things that do get me riled up (most of which I have ranted about here), but which don’t bother others. When your remarks get to a wide enough audience, the odds are that your wonderful, home-spun figures of speech are not going to be be found amusing to everyone.
If Leach wants to make comments using questionable hyperbole, he has to be prepared to take the heat. His best plan would probably be to just apologize without trying to explain anything, which would probably get him in worse trouble.
Anyway, I’m not grievously offended, like I was with the Thugalaga – Erin Andrews episode. (There’s a good topic for someone – why should or why shouldn’t Leach’s comments and Thugalaga’s actions be looked at exactly the same?)
