THE DEN: Women's Volleyball golDEN Game vs. U$C
Bumped. GO BRUINS. -N
As some of you may know, I am a current Executive Board member of THE DEN, which is the ultimate fan group within the "Den" (as marketing calls it):

Per a previous conversation within a post, I found that BN could be a great resource to THE DEN to promote some of our important events upcoming as they relate to our athletics teams.
This Friday (Oct 9th) at 7pm in Pauley Pavilion, our #16 UCLA Bruins Women’s Volleyball squad is taking on our cross town and league rival, #13 U$C toOJans. This is our "golDEN Game" for the UCLA Women’s Volleyball team.
What is a "golDEN Game?" Come with me after the jump.
A golDEN game is a special non-revenue sport game/match/meet that the team deems as an important and necessary game to win. THE DEN then contacts the team and marketing representatives for that sport to promote the game and ensure that out of all games in the year, this one gets the most attendance and participation, at least among students. THE DEN then goes out and finds ways to draw a crowd, usually involving giveaways and food to the students.
We are already expecting a huge student population for this event, but to truly make a difference, the teams needs the house to be packed with Blue and Gold. In the past UCLA vs. U$C volleyball matches, $C has found a way to fill a section with red … in our house. This is clearly unacceptable, because not only is it our home court, a contingent of opposing fans can have a massive effect on our team and crowd, especially in the venue (a curtain is put down to only utilize the eastern third of Pauley). With that in mind, I am asking BruinsNation to join THE DEN in flooding Pauley and ensuring our Bruins a victory.
I cannot promise you free giveaways or food, but I can promise you an excellent and entertaining match. Women’s volleyball is very energetic, emotional, and exciting and will hardly disappoint. A victory will be a great way to prepare for a day of tailgating and football.
Please come out in your Blue and Gold and come early. Gates open at 6pm, and in past years, there have been $C fans waiting to get in at opening.
I hope to see you at at the game. I would also enjoy meeting fellow BN members and put faces to screen names. I’ll be in the bottom student section (south end of the volleyball court) wearing a blue bruin hat with white pinstripes so come down and say HI!
Come out for a great evening and cheer our Bruins on to victory over those trOJies!
Ticket Prices:
Adults: $7
Youth: $5 (16 years and younger)
Group: $5 (15 people or more)
UCLA Students: Free admission with valid Bruin Card.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

"when you've seen how big the world is, how can you make due with this?"
We are working on it
I know that many non-students have been asking about getting den shirts for the last few years. The problem is that they will not start “selling” them until football season is over and after the beginning of basketball season. 2 years ago, they allowed students to purchase additional den shirts before basketball games, but they did not allow it last year (assuming you wanted that horrible looking shirt). If they allow students to buy the excess shirts, I can collect money to buy those shirts as a “Student” and distribute them to you if you like. Just an idea :)

Sounds like you're excluding students from the BN, which I'm sure was not what you intended, Nestor.

Just looking back here BK
not sure if you saw it, but there was an interesting article a little while back. Just wondering what your take is on it
There's no one in the world that wants to beat UCLA more than _______.
Must have missed that post
My take:
1) we have too many colors. Unlike some schools, UCLA has three major colors that appear on our jerseys: true blue, yellow, and white (4 if you include the pink in UCLA women’s Vball and soccer jerseys during breast cancer awareness). From these colors come all the fan jerseys associated with them and the various shirt colors that are made with UCLA on them, ie. blue, yellow, white, gray, black, pink, or Hawaiian, there are too many combinations to match. On great sight, for example is Wisconsin or Penn state football. Wisconsin has red and white and their fans wear one or the other. Ultimately it can be assured that every fan has at least a red or white shirt and will wear it. Penn state is the same but with navy blue and white. I think in the game against Iowa, Penn state had a “white out” and it looked awesome. I think that we just have to many colors to wear on any given day and no one around campus really save their special shirt for game day (for students, a den shirt).
2) As mentioned in the article, we live in LA and there are many teams to cheer for. It sucks that people go to games not wearing Bruin gear, but thats life. There will always be Dodgers and Lakers shirts in the crowd.
3) At least from my perspective on students, they DON’T CARE. It is really disgusting, but as hard as we try to “make” people wear their den shirts, especially for basketball games (and we made a big push for that 2 years ago), we ultimately cannot stop a student going into the bottom section wearing other colors.
4) At least for basketball, our home jersey is white. People like to wear the home jersey. And I guess for football, people like to wear the away jersey. But this isn’t that big of an issue. Blue and White is manageable, just like the other schools mentioned above.
5) Marketing doesn’t EVER make a push at a “Color (pick a color and place it <—) Out.” I remember $C had a “black out” for basketball 2 years ago, and even though i dislike everything about that school, it was a great concept. It did look really bad when several people wore white though (ie. Pete Carroll and Matt Leinhart). So as far as the color they chose (although it had a meaning) it was a bad idea. I think we could pull a “Blue out” of some sort, like at basketball, but that would entail MASSIVE notices and a distribution of blue shirts to EVERYONE on gameday. It is definitely possible especially with corporate sponsorship.
I would love to see unity. It is awesome to see. Period. Before such tasks can be achieved, we have other areas to worry about. As a Den member going on my 4th year and seeing the crappy (for lack of a better word) turnout of students last year especially at basketball, I want to work toward LOUDNESS first and the color coordination second. Penn State, for example, doesn’t lack fan intensity. They will be loud on defense no matter what. They are arguably a one sport school. Therefore, they have time to focus attention on color coordination because they don’t have to worry about the prior. We need to work on fan loudness and intensity before we should even consider trying to match colors. I believe this will come with winning. For football, winning more than last year. For basketball, nothing short another title.

Thanks for that
Answered the question perfectly… get this greened now!
There's no one in the world that wants to beat UCLA more than _______.
Promoting and Marketing "Blue"
I really think that the athletic dept in its marketing should concentrate on pushing blue; encourage fans to be part of the “Big Blue Sea” or something. Make blue more of the fan culture, and reach out to campus outlets (DB, etc.) Allumni Assoc, and general fanbase (BN, and other blogs) to push it.
Don’t worry about whether it’s the “right” shade of blue; en masse the various shades will blend like a pointalist painting. Eventually, we’ll see more true blue. I would shy away from designating events as golden, as it implies to wear gold, diluting the blue effect and, in this case, wearing the color in common with our hated rival. Imagine the look if all their fans wear red and ours wear gold—not pretty.
We aren't promoting "gold"
golDEN is a term coined for a “golden” or important game. It was also made because it has “DEN” in the name. Thats all. It has nothing to do with the color someone should wear. In fact, we state in our promotion of this event to students that they should wear Blue and Gold…i.e. go crazy with UCLA colors. For example, I play to paint my face blue and gold. This event is not about looking good, but rather being loud and obnoxious (as students)

I agree
While a sea of blue would be cool, I’m more concerned with getting our crowds more into the game and cheering. Actually, I’m most concerned about getting more people in the crowd.

Thanks to all that came out.
Bruins were able to sweep the trOJans 3-0, included a great comeback in one of the games. The house was packed and lively. Will let you know when our coming events occur.
THANKS!!!
GO BRUINS!!! CHEER LIKE CHAMPIONS!!!
no unfortunately
I believe there is also a non-flash photography rule in place. I could be wrong since I’ve never actually attempted to photograph at a game in Pauley.
