Setting Expectations

I know I'm writing this post before I've even had a chance to post the pre-game guess results from last week, so you'll have to forgive me. But there is something that has been bothering me the last few weeks, and it has become a real thorn in my side after we beat Washington. I've been reading a lot of articles, posts, and comments over the last week from everyone associated with UCLA football (all the way from writers, fans, and even coaches). Everyone is talking about UCLA winning 2 out of our last 3 games to become bowl eligible.

Looking at our schedule, it's obvious to see where that loss will come from...USC, right? I'm sorry, but it really bugs me to hear people talking like this. I know our history. I know that we have not played against USC very well over the past 8 years (with two exceptions). But hell, this is a rivalry game! We should ALWAYS be competitive in such games...and I think we will be this year. We are better than we were last year, and USC is not as good. We have been improving over the course of the year (even though our record would not indicate that), while USC is either stagnant or regressing. Both teams have freshman QB's and a strong D. Is the gap really as large as the MSM would have us believe?

I don't want to get ahead of myself...I know we have two very tough games ahead of us and nothing is guaranteed. I think WSU is going to go balls out and give us a hell of a game, while ASU has a legit defense and seems to have found their QB. But can we please stop all of the chatter where we assume that UCLA will lose to USC? This is a huge year for our program and I'll be damned if I mail it in as a fan, because I know our guys are working their asses off to make sure we don't mail it in on Saturday.

Last point: I've had a lot of fun watching our team this year. You can see the growth from player to player, game to game. You can see our coaches learning, evolving, figuring things out. Isn't it fun to be a part of a program that is headed in the right direction? And for those that jumped off the bandwagon...just stay off...PLEASE. WE DON'T NEED YOU. Only true Bruins need apply.
