Center Court: Ben Ball (CSUF) Second Half Thread

Cal State Fullerton Titans at UCLA Bruins, Nov. 16, 2009, 8:59 p.m. PST

Since we're in the wee hours here on the Best, err, I mean West Coast, I'm filling in for Nestor.  Well, folks, it has not been a pretty half.  Our Ben Ball Warriors have come out and played sloppy basketball and go into the half-time break down to the Cal State Fullerton Titans by a score of 27-33.  Turnovers, poor shot selection, and stone cold shooting from the charity stripe are the stories of the first half.

Fortunately, Malcolm Lee and Michael Roll have kept the Bruins in the game with smart cuts and smart possession. If you're cut off from WWL, you can track the second half against the Titans at the official site. Nikola Dragovic continues to frustrate with ill-advised chucks, but Reeves Nelson has been an absolute beast.

Let's hope the Bruins can get it together.  Fire away in our second half (change up the mojo) thread.

GO BRUINS!

Changing the mojo...

Figure that it is about the right time to open up a late night beer.

If it works, this is the type of mojo change that I could get used to :P

We looked horrible in the 1st half. Hopefully, we make adjustments and the team calms down and starts playing smarter.

Given how thin we are in the backcourt

We need to go to a more deliberate, grind-it-out, inside-game oriented offense. We’re taking too many jumpers. We need our big men to work inside because our outside game isn’t happening right now.

Shoot

I think he pulled something.

by BlueReign on Nov 16, 2009 10:13 PM PST reply actions

Scared to have ND at the 3

He’s way too slow to play on the perimeter

by Bellerophon on Nov 16, 2009 10:13 PM PST reply actions

Sadly, I think we will be seeing that for a while

Without Honeycutt available, I think Drago has to shift to the 3 at times, due to substitution needs/rest for JA/ML/MR

Apparently his offense was a product of having Shipp and Collison last season.

Have to remember folks

2009-2010 is not this team’s year. A run at the Pac-10 title and into the tournament is what I’d expect. These kids are young. 2010-2011, though, is going to be fun for the Bruins.

Just like JF, AA, LRMAM, etc., needed to go through growing pains to lay the foundation for our Final Four runs, these guys need to go through their growing pains.

by Bellerophon on Nov 16, 2009 10:18 PM PST reply actions

Well one thing that's different

is that those guys you mentioned were freshmen having growing pains. ND is just looking terrible. Gordon is not asserting himself on the post and Roll has been a non-factor on offense.

by Kerckhoff405 on Nov 16, 2009 10:21 PM PST up reply actions

I credit Fullerton's players for Roll's lack of production.

They’re running to him as soon as he gets the ball.

by BlueReign on Nov 16, 2009 10:22 PM PST reply actions

JA drives, draws the foul

We got to attack the basket and either dish to the big men down low, or kick it out to Roll for the outside shot (read: do not kick it to the bricklayer, aka ND)

by Bellerophon on Nov 16, 2009 10:23 PM PST reply actions

Not sold on him like I was with DC

DC burst on to the scene. I think JA has the potential, but it will take time.

Embarrassing loss

No matter how you put it, the effort on the offensive end of the floor was pathetic tonight. Defensively they were active but they showed no effort offensively. I do not believe Howland teaches these guys to just stand around and shoot long jumpers with no one around to rebound the ball. These guys have to have it within themselves to be aggressive and attack the basket.

by Nakatomi Plaza on Nov 16, 2009 11:33 PM PST reply actions

Bad night for the players and the coach

If we play stagnant offense and our guys miss open shots, we are going to lose a lot of games like this. No real reliable scorers on the team – Drago and Roll are shooters that benefit from being a third option. Lee is too out of control, Gordon has concrete hands down low. Only highlight was Reeves Nelson – who CBH sat on the bench while the team wallowed. Not a good start at all. I though preseason we’d be 3rd of 4th in Pac10, but after Concordia and this, we are going to be lucky to grab the 6th spot.

by TigerBruin on Nov 16, 2009 11:34 PM PST reply actions

Gordon

Gordon still needs a lot of work on fundamentals. No excuses for him to not grab that offensive rebound that led to the 5 point lead. He had the inside position but did not box out the opponent.

by UCLA4Life on Nov 16, 2009 11:34 PM PST reply actions

by madmaxucla on Nov 16, 2009 11:35 PM PST reply actions

my only guess

is that it had something to do with CSF going into zone defense and Nelson isn’t a great outside shooter. That being said, could he have done any worse than ND?

by UCLA5677 on Nov 16, 2009 11:36 PM PST up reply actions

ASU

That “offense” was exactly like the ASU loss at Pauley last season. NO ONE on this team looked like they wanted to shoot the ball or even make an offensive play.

Oh UCLA you sweet bitch, you've BRUINed me for anything else.

by bruin8uclap on Nov 17, 2009 12:07 AM PST up reply actions

Okay it's time for some positives...and negatives.

BRIGHT SPOTS:
Malcolm Lee – Can score and get into the paint.
Commissioner Gordon – defense and rebounding
Reeves Nelson – hustle plays
Michael Roll – His shooting is still there and will get better.

THE UGLY:
Nicola Dragovic – 1-8 from 3. 2-14 overall.
Jerime Anderson – 1-12.

Questions:
Why didn’t CBH bring Reeves back in when he clearly helped us get back into the game?
Why was Nicola in the game for so long when he kept missing shots? I’m sure Morgan or Reeves could have defended and got those 14 rebounds.

33 Wins. Yeah, I said it.

by JETisKing on Nov 16, 2009 11:38 PM PST reply actions

Not many bright spots

Defensively they were active. However, they still suffered from mistakes. Gordon not getting that defensive rebound that CSUF eventually got the 5 point lead on was huge. For the most part they held CSUF to the defensive game plan that they wanted. Unfortunately the Bruins decided that tonight they were gonna abuse the rims with those bricks coming off of sorry offensive execution…. if you can call what they did an offense.

by UCLA4Life on Nov 16, 2009 11:41 PM PST up reply actions

38 Minutes on the floor

Tied with Lee for fewest of the starters, but far more than he is used to playing at this level to date.

by bruinhoo on Nov 16, 2009 11:48 PM PST up reply actions

You know

It’s tough for us to watch the games and get upset after every miss. It’s not like we’re down on the floor making the shots ourselves. The kids don’t shoot the ball expecting to miss, they want to make their shots just as much as we want them to make them.

That said, I didn’t see the Bruins reacting positively as the game worn on. They looked a bit gassed at the end, and where previous Bruin teams would power through it, this early in the seasons our guys just didn’t have it when they needed it.

I do wish Coach would have made some quicker adjustments, and I really think Nelson should have been on the floor at least some point in the OT periods.

It’s only one loss. It’s a tough one, it’s going to be a tough season, but we’re all still Bruins. We’ll survive.

UNC and KU

by EdO'B3017 on Nov 16, 2009 11:46 PM PST up reply actions

Not necessarily

You can be built back up really quick in basketball. But you’ve got to get the right guys. Right now, each player have glaring holes in their games and it’s hard to hide them. That said, there’s no excuses for each player to play so soft on offense. I seriously doubt each time out Howland is telling them to pass it around the perimeter and take a long jumper with no rebounders underneath. No good ball movement, no good off-the-ball movement, no offensive rebounding attempts. Poor effort on offense by the team.

Seniors

Roll, Dragovic, and Keefe are all bit role players. The problem is expecting them to do more than they are capable of doing. They will never be go-to players.

by UCLA4Life on Nov 17, 2009 12:17 AM PST up reply actions

Dont see the future here

What bothers me is that in the past, when our young guys got minutes, they looked like future studs (Farmar, Afflalo, Westbrook, Collison, Shipp, Love). I just don’t get that vibe from any of these guys, except Nelson. Malcolm Lee and Drew Gordon may be solid players after four years, but not studs. CBH’s offense relies on having a couple guys who can create shots in the last 5 seconds of a shot clock – who on this team has the tools to do that?

Only thing we have in our favor is half the teams in the Pac 10 are in even worse shape than UCLA, so we likely still finish in top half of the league.

Absolutely

If MR and ND are your goto guys, it’s gonna be a long season.

Excellent point!!!

especially Westbrook after DC got injured. They look lost

I said this last season as well

I just don’t see an identity by any of the players. There’s not one thing where I can look at a player and expect certain things like I did with Luc Richard’s defense, Love’s rebounding and passing, etc.

Eh

We’re pathetically young and inexperienced. When you’re only returning ‘starter’ should never have been a starter in his career, and your other two seniors are support-guys, you’re going to have LOTS of problems.
We’ll get better by the end of the season. I know it doesn’t look like it now, and it won’t look like it this month, but we will get better. Heck, with a horrible Pac-10, we might even make the tourney this year if certain basic team principles develop.

But whatever. Neither team wanted to win tonight. They just wanted to lose less than we wanted to lose. Good for them?

pretty awful

I was hopeful someone had improved other than Malcolm Lee from last season. Roll is the only other player on offense that seems to have a clue. Honeycutt better be real good in a few weeks or UCLA football is now ahead of basketball. Fullerton is terrible, so we need to improve alot to be competitive in an off pac 10 year.

4 players leaving has not stopped many of the best programs in the country from being competitive at least year in and year out. Last I saw with mediocre coaching Arizona still made the tourney. We will need to get much better to have any tournament hopes.

Best I can hope for is Morgan, Lane, Honeycutt, Stover will start getting minutes. I only want Roll shooting at the moment from 3 and we need to work toward next year of offense by busting the ball inside and getting every single post we have game touches to draw fouls and get better. You don’t need 4 shooters to attack a zone you need good basketball players who can catch and shoot on the interior and exterior. Anyone who defends us and leaves Roll or Dragovic open is not smart. They will be easy to take away if we don’t figure out more. We at the moment are lacking good basketball players. Howland has had many NBA players the last 5 years. At the moment this team has 0 (I think Morgan and hopefully Honeycutt will prove that wrong). Now maybe he deserves some or all of the credit for making them NBA players… or maybe he had a nice run of grabbing largely undiscovered talent like Westbrook, Mbah a’Moute and Collison. Quite frankly none of the current players are their caliber.

I am hopeful still, but have some trepidation about our ability to turn things around dramatically this season. I think we need to change tempo completely, get tons of guys minutes, press, pound it inside, and find out who can be a player at UCLA next season.

Offensive effort

I just don’t think the players are putting the effort out there on offense and are too tentative to make a play. How many drives to the basket did they even attempt in OT? Players were standing around and not moving to open spaces to receive a pass, too slow to pass the ball, or not creating an offensive play with cuts or screens. The players were too tentative on offense. The coaches can work on the offensive plays until the cows come home, but it’s up to the players to be assertive and make plays happen. CSUF were in the penalty, UCLA only had 1 foul very late in the game and OT, and no one even thinks about driving to the basket or initiate contact for a foul call?

dissapointing

I would’ve liked to see Malcom Lee penetrate more especially since Fullerton was out of fouls. Seems like the underclassman deferred a lot of times to the upperclassman. Can’t wait to see what a healthy team looks like. Our frontcourt except for Nelson was bad. I expect better from Keefe and Dragovic. Dragovic needs to learn about shot selection… and free throws…cmon. also way too many airballs.

we lost to cs fullerton

probably the worst loss the program has had since the lavin years. some of the blame falls on coaching.. but i would say not coaching errors were more who was on the court. the defense wasn’t terrible (not the level of defense in the recent good teams we’ve had). I was a huge dragovic fan last year, but he doesn’t seem to have improved, if anything he has regressed to his sophomore year. he did grab 14 rebounds and pick it up later in the second half, but still disappointing effort. Keefe had some nice passes early on but really wasn’t great. I think we have a pg problem.. i just don’t see JA doing anything anytime soon. He looks more like he should be a backup for the type of team we want to have. I know he was injured recently, but I thought we looked better shifting lee and roll to ballhandlers and going with a big lineup. roll was solid, can’t fault him too much. lee fought hard, still is a bit raw, but i think he’ll be a good player by years end. The other bright spot, I wish saw some action later in the game. RN was a game changer (he did commit a few terrible in bounds passes, one that lead to a dunk after some made fts). i disagree with a lot of people on gordon’s effort today. he wasn’t bad.. but i don’t think he put a stamp on this game. i don’t see where he excelled or made a difference.

i wonder what kind of game morgan, lane, moser (who played for 10 seconds and had the ball taken out of his hands and was benched after), and mostly honeycutt can do. i’m hoping lane or honeycutt can add something, cause right now no one can really create shots for their teammates or themselves very well. malcolm being the closest to doing that right now. its a long season, bad start, but we have some pieces and a good teacher. i’m pretty sure we’ll be a much better team by february.

Just came back from the game

I am frustrated like all Bruin fans, but I know CBH will get this turned around. There will be some growing pains. After the game, on the post game radio show, CBH admitted that it was his fault that he didn’t used the bench more, especially Reeves Nelson. He feels that he needs to force himself to play the freshmen and give them some experience.

I believe this team will only go as far as Jerime Anderson will take it. During pregame warm ups, he was totally off on his shots, it carried over into the game. It was obvious he was lacking confidence in leading the team. He missed 5 weeks of practice, and will really need to get back to his usual self and more very soon.
