Alum Geoffrey Strand leads every man, woman and child in cheer at the Rose Bowl

The Daily Bruin has a story on alumni cheerleader Geoff Strand in today's online and print issue.

Geoffrey Strand’s popular punch-line developed in response to the turmoil that epitomized reality during his days as a student on the Westwood campus. At the time, protests and flag burnings were not uncommon, and power struggles both social and political pervaded the national and local scene.

As part of his campaign for head cheerleader, a student-elected office in those days, Strand created the trademark catchphrase to rouse memories of the good times. This imagery, epitomized by the Beach Boys’ “Happy Days” stereotype for optimism, was Strand’s attempt at a reversion to normalcy.

…in the article is Geoffs sidekick Frank who was a cheerleader I think in the 40’s. Also, more than a few of us in the alumni section, at times, are perplexed with the cheers as they are not timed right likie beginning an 8-clap as our offense is coming to the line, that is when we need to be quiet. Additionally, I do not know how much faith I put in the alumni section being the most feared section in all of college football. However, the effort put forth by Geoff and Frank is certainly appreciated and they do add to the experience of making the alumni section a great place to watch a game.

Now if we can somehow prevent fans for the opponents from sitting in the alumni section. Most games, visiting fans are tolerable but when we’ve got $c fans around us it makes us wonder who the hell sold their tickets so these peeps can sit in the alumni section…

Enemies in our Midst

Before moving to Texas, I had very good seats in the alumni section.

There were people holding great seats who never came to one game. Almost all of the time, they sold to the enemy. That sucks.

I know there’s nothing we can do about it, but I think Bruins should sell to Bruins — or give tickets to Bruins. I hated having sc people sitting in front of me. These sections are like family. You sit with the same people year after year — except for the seats that are never used by the people who own them and are sold to transients.

While not to discount's Strand effort

to increase fan participation, the real reason that UCLA gained a solid fan base was their move to the Rose Bowl in 1982 and Pac-10 titles in 3 out of the next 4 years. Winning will tend to do that.
