Colorado Interviewing Karl Dorrell To Be Their Next Head Coach?
From FootballCoachScoop.com:
Sources close to the situation tell us that Athletic Director Mike Bohn is interviewing former Colorado/UCLA coach and current Miami WR Coach Karl Dorrell this weekend. Our source also confirmed that Oklahoma Defensive Coordinator, Brent Venables, seems to be the best candidate in the search process so far.
Well there are few reactions for me when I read this blurb:
- First, unlike Steve Lavin the more time goes by I think the mellower I am getting about Dorrell. Despite the brutal experience we had with him here in Westwood and how it was proven that he wasn't ready to be a head coach, as years go by I am going to lose the visceral emotional feeling that a sleazebag like Lavin conjures up. Dorrell is after all a Bruin. That doesn't mean that there will be no pushback if anyone attempts to revise history about what took place under him at UCLA.
- On wishing him luck I would like to see Dorrell get a second chance as a head coach but not at a major D-I program. I think it will be cool if Dorrell coaches again in a mid major program and use the lessons he learned from his failed stint in Westwood. That would mean getting involved with the program, working and competing his rear end off on the recruiting trail, hiring the right coaches and then doing what he can to empower them accordingly.
- Lastly, when I read this it came across as a leak story to create a perception that Colorado is doing what it can to keep their coaching search process diverse.
As bitter as I still am from what we had to go through with him as the head coach and what he did to our program, I hope he finds success by applying the lessons he learned from Westwood. I will have a hard time staying mad against someone who (unlike a fraud, scumbag, conartist like Lavin) also attended the greatest school in the world.
I am not going to be able to hold a grudge forever (no matter how painful those memories are) against another Bruin (although I realize he and his hardest of hardcore supporters might not feel the same way). Either way I'd like to wish Dorrell luck.
GO BRUINS.

the other thing about Dorrell
is that, unlike Lavin, he seems like a good guy overall. Sure, he was way over his head coaching the Bruins, but maybe he’s learned from his mistakes. I agree with you that he should look for a mid-major job or something of that type first, but i’m glad he’s potentially getting another opportunity.
Has there ever been a player better than Detlef Schrempf?
Even a little revisionism is too much, Bucknell and Nestor
Sure, CTS was a Bruin, and sure, that counts for a lot. But let’s not forget that he did not show himself to be all that much of a humanitarian, like Mother Teresa or Cheatie Petie, for example. The entire CTS package includes firing a coach by text message (allegedly – there was some disagreement about that as I recall) and throwing players under the bus by name. That’s not to say I don’t wish him well in his next gig, because I do. In my opinion, he still needs to warm up at a D-II school and learn how to be in charge of a program (still can’t use the “C” word when talking about CTS). But he was not the tremendous character guy who simply deserves a chance to run a program.
If I were Colorado, I would pass on him. If I were Boulder Community College, I would give him a shot.
Maybe Pete Carroll
can put in a nice word for him? After all, he owes KD a WHOLE BUNCH for the success he’s had over the last decade, no?
I think your 3rd point N pretty much tells the whole story here. I don’t envision any major D1 program taking a chance on KD after his failed 5 year stint in Westwood.

Here here!
As a Bruin alum, one can only wish him well.
However, looking back on his time in Westwood, I still find it hard to believe he lasted FIVE years as coach. Aren’t we just a bit too generous?? Lesson learned, obviously.
I’ve been a Neuheisel supporter for a LONG time and I am glad he’s come home. Donahue made a HUGE mistake not endorsing him back in the day, implying he was a bit young to assume the head coaching mantle. He went on to disprove everyone both at Colorado and Washington (never mind the so-called ‘scandals’), and he’s on his way to doing so here.
I hope Dorrell finds his way eventually but I’m glad he’s seeking work elsewhere.

Buffs fans, don't do it!
I wish him good luck and all but I can’t believe Colorado would even consider hiring him as its head coach. That is literally unbelievable to me. I say this based solely on his record as head coach at a big D-1 school. And I don’t just mean his W/L “record,” either. He did a lot of stuff as UCLA’s coach that still makes no sense.
Colorado football used to be consistently good to very good to sometimes great. It is presently in a death spiral heading right down the toilet. Dorrell is not the one to bring them out of their present situation.
Anything is possible but I just do not see it. No way.
Buffs, be warned! Colorado was the site of Dorrell’s first loss as UCLA’s head coach and where he “forgot” about the RB (White) on the bench who just may have made a difference in that game. I was there! And I’m still in therapy!
No
Dorrell simply lacks the passion and feel for being a good college coach. A guy who doesn’t like recruiting can’t teach himself to like it at the age of 45 (or whatever he is now). A guy who doesn’t have the personality to run an intense program will not acquire that personality all of a sudden — it’s just not who he is.
Dorrell should concentrate on becoming a better OC so he can eventually hold that position in the NFL. And if it’s true that the NFL is his dream destination, then any job he takes at the college level can only be for the added money and security (of at least 3 years).
Who deserves more sympathy. Him? Or the entire fanbase of whatever school he might end up at?
I agree
Dorrell simply lacks the passion and feel for being a good college coach
THIS
In the college world you have to convince a recruit to come to your school. It’s not like the NFL where you sit there and go, “Oh it’s my turn, ok, I’ll take him”. This takes passion and excitement and the ability to sell your school. CRN definitely has all of that and more.
I’ve always thought Dorrell’s personality was way more suited for the NFL where everything is run like a business than College

Pros and Cons re CTS at Colorado
PROS:
(1) Runs a clean program — always needed with Colorado’s prior rep.
(2) NFL experience — theoretically helps with recruiting.
(3) Not his first time as HC — hopefully reduces the rookie mistakes.
(4) Ties to school — former asst. coach during some of their winning seasons in the 90s.
(5) Currently a WR coach on one of the more creative offensive units in the NFL with the Dolphins.
CONS:
(1) Mediocre winning percentage — 56% in 5 years, 1-3 in (non-BCS) Bowl Games.
(2) Ineffective teacher on offense — WCO for college kids with NCAA_limtied practice time? Seriously?
(3) Horribly risk-averse — probably called for more past midfield punts than any other coach in history.
(4) “WR coach on the Dolphins” — with the number of times they run Wildcat with Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams, he probably has less authority than the NCAA compliance officer at U$C.

No Pro-Dorrell list would be complete
without mentioning his well-groomed, stylish attire and his knack for remembering birthdays ;-)

did i miss a press release?
I didn’t see an announcement that Hawkins was fired. I’d take everything with a huge grain of salt until a firing is announced. I cannot imagine CU interviewing a replacement before the current guy is ousted. I’ve also heard rumors that Hawkins will stay because CU can’t afford his buyout.
Doesn’t this sound like the rumors that CTS was in line for the Raiders head gig? A little name drop to get his name in circulation.
Finally, I haven’t studied the NFL schedule, but I imagine Miami must be playing somewhere this weekend. I find it difficult to believe that its WR coach won’t be coaching up Teddy Ginn to an inspired 2 reception, 21 yard performance in the first game after Ronnie Brown was lost for the season.

Meh
While I am not sure about the veracity of this story … it wouldn’t be unusual for AD to conduct interviews or engage in a feeling out process even while there was a coach (who is probably on his way out) in “charge.” The interview or meeting doesn’t have to be conducted in the AD’s offices. I am sure he can fly around.
One more reasoned, distinguished thought
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA.
I wish him well
but he should take a hint from DeWayne Walker, who, even though he was FAR more qualified and more effective as a recruiter, took a job at New Mexico State, a mid(low?)-major, as his proving ground.
Ah well. Maybe the AD will “forget” that CTS is a candidate…
But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
