Center Court: Ben Ball (Cal State Bakersfield) Open Thread

Time to kick start the Senior Day weekend in Westwood with the Ben Ball warriors on Friday night. Cal Stake Bakersfield Road Runniers are visiting Pauley Pavillon tonight for UCLA's second game of the regular season.

We don't really need to rehash the nightmare from Monday night. At this point we are hoping that we will see a basketball team that will show some improvements on how it plays on Ben Ball defense and most importantly be patient and selective by taking good shots within the flow of our offense. A little improvement from FT line would be nice too. You can check out more of our pre-game notes here.

Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 pm PST. It will broadcast live on FS West. You can also follow the game via official game tracker over here. For those who are following the game along this open thread, as always please free to share updates and scores so that other BNers across the nation who might not be fortunate enough to get live broadcast can follow along the fun. Well I guess it has been more agonzing than fun in recent weeks. Let's hope that changes a little tonight.

So let's get this party started. Fire away.

GO BRUINS.

Cal went 0-for NYC this week

For those not keeping track, the Pac-10 favorite Cal Bears were demolished by (unranked) Syracuse last night, 95-73 @ MSG, and lost to #15 Ohio State earlier today, 76-70.

by bruinhoo on Nov 20, 2009 7:04 PM PST reply actions

Re. Syracuse

The Orangemen followed up their drubbing of Cal with a convincing victory over UNC this evening, 87-71, blowing out the Tar Heels in the 2nd half.

'Cuse

Looking impressive in November. Does Cal have injury issues? Haven’t paid as much attention as I should be I guess.

by Nestor on Nov 20, 2009 7:25 PM PST up reply actions

Theo Robertson missed the NY trip

Don’t think that explains this performance, though.

Well

I think it was last year … when UDub lost its first game of the season against Portland State. Lot of funky things have early in the season.

by Nestor on Nov 20, 2009 7:38 PM PST reply actions

Missed FTs are inexcusable

Especially from your SG who is trying to establish himself as a go-to guy.

by PEDbruin on Nov 20, 2009 7:39 PM PST up reply actions

CSUB

is actually not a bad squad, pretty athletic (I live in Bakersfield). I watched CSUB play Santa Clara last week from courtside. Stephon Carter is a very, very talented freshman (number 21). Can score in bunches.

We look horrible

early on. Those guys look like they want it lot more.

Drago's peons from month ago

Can explain some of the lack of focus on this team.

by mplsbruin on Nov 20, 2009 7:42 PM PST via mobile reply actions

Just heard about Drago

I still like Keefe to start. Too young. Need his SR presence and he knows what to do on O and D.

by BlueReign on Nov 20, 2009 7:46 PM PST reply actions

At this point

we have 1 guy (ML) that can create and get his own shot. That needs to change or else it is going to be a BIG problem.

by BlueReign on Nov 20, 2009 7:49 PM PST reply actions

Why give Mustafa so many mins?

Why not put in MM at the 3 spot and get 3 guards on the line up?

by Nestor on Nov 20, 2009 7:50 PM PST up reply actions

FR

and CBH are like oil and water. Unless it is neccessary, he would rather not. I agree with you. Put in Moser and see what he can do. At the very least, we can see if ML can handle the point. And if so, it gives CBH some options with the lineup.

by BlueReign on Nov 20, 2009 7:52 PM PST up reply actions

CBH - I love the guy

but he needs to think about adapting just a bit. Times are changing just a little.

by Nestor on Nov 20, 2009 7:53 PM PST up reply actions

+1

if there is a complaint about CBH, its his decision/stubborness not to deviate from his style/beliefs. We’re going to need the FR. Especially people that can play in the backcourt so we should try to see if MM is a viable option and try to build some depth. This ain’t gonna be the first time JA picks up 2 quickies. I’m already fearing him going against Randle/Porter/Wise/etc.

these guys never played any D in HS. Even if they think they did, you and I know it really wasn’t “real” D.

by BlueReign on Nov 20, 2009 7:54 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah

I hear ya. I really would like him to trust our freshmen a little more. At this point we got nothing to lose. We are not going to struggling this year … why not struggle with the young ones (who have more upside).

by UCLABruins4Ever on Nov 20, 2009 8:03 PM PST reply actions

My first game at pauley

Well I though I’d have a good time against a little team like bakersfield but instead all I’m getting is a mess of a team that doesn’t know where the ball is lazy on defense and can’t even set up an offense it’s amazing

by millikinbruin on Nov 20, 2009 8:03 PM PST reply actions

It's asking too much

but we will need ML to impose his will on the opponent and put his stamp on this game.

by BlueReign on Nov 20, 2009 8:04 PM PST reply actions

Not possible

In the system CBH has. I’m still waiting on some sort of an adjustment from him. Great coach, but he deserves as much blame as the players right now.

In limited time i gave him the benefit of the dobut with ridiculous turnovers and lack of control,

and I will continue that line of thinking for about 3 more weeks. However, he looks a little hopeless out there.

by bruinbrah on Nov 20, 2009 8:07 PM PST up reply actions

I trust CBH

in his assessment of JA. He took JA over Drew Jr. I still think JA will be an above average D1 point but I don’t see him in the class of PG’s we’ve been used to. The kid needs to forget about the expectations and just play.

by BlueReign on Nov 20, 2009 8:07 PM PST up reply actions

I think it will take him a while

but I just don’t get wtf are we doing putting Hamid on the floor?

by Nestor on Nov 20, 2009 8:08 PM PST up reply actions

Only thing I can think of

is Hamid has been in CBH’s system so he knows what to do. Moser is still learning. He’s like our young WR’s that run wrong routes.

as unfathomable as this sounds, it’s hard to see us making the NCAA’s this year. exactly which conference teams can we beat with this squad? yes, they will improve, but this team is rudderless. how bad is keefe? he looks like he’s playing in his first college game. trust in ben, but anything we accomplish may likely have to wait until next year. damn.

Good cut by the FR

and nice find by ML. You need to do a post on what our optimum lineup would be. A possible lineup with ML at PG. Only worry is that he’s going to be burnt trying to run the team and be our go to guy on O.

behind Brandon Jennings and Kemba Walker
is he just rusty from injury? the #3 HS PG should be able to do something relatively well, what am I missing? Even a walk-on should be able to dribble the ball up the court under 1-on-1 pressure without turning the ball over

by the stellar play at the PG position having Farmar/Collison/Westy. This team has some really good parts that will develop over time. I’m waiting for that one or two great parts though. So far I’m not sure who would be the go-to guy at the end of the game. MR I guess but that’s never been his role. It takes quite a paradigm shift to watch a team like this that might lose many games – rather than what we’ve had over the last several years. Not necessarily a bad thing for a fan – less pressure – but a paradigm shift indeed.

by UCLABruins4Ever on Nov 20, 2009 8:53 PM PST reply actions

Yes

Most of the team is making lob passes. It slows down the offense a lot. I think it’s a function of us not having any dribble penetration, it’s allowing the other team to extend their zones and disrupt the passing lanes

by Nestor on Nov 20, 2009 9:06 PM PST up reply actions

yeah I hear ya

This “comeback” would have consisted of quite a few more bricks and empty possessions, I’m guessing, with Dragovic in there. His shot can be quite valuable when it’s on but his defense leaves WAY too much to be desired. If he can pick it up and start playing defense (and hitting shots) he can be valuable. Let’s hope he gets his stuff figured out.

Not to make too much of 1.8 games

But so far our defensive efficiency is pretty solid. Offense tends to take time to come around, especially with young players – making shots, etc.. – but defensive intensity is there or not. It’s not been perfect and rotations can be be better, there is some lack of communication, etc… but for the most part, points-per-possession so far is pretty solid. It’ll only get better. Ben ball is back.

I write this as we allow a couple of easy layups – but you get my drift.

by zinlinez on Nov 20, 2009 9:13 PM PST reply actions

One un-dark spot vs CSUF

68 pts in 2 OT game isn’t awful. Granted CSUF missed some easy shots and shot very poorly, but we usually force a team to shoot poorly. And we know where lots of the softness on D was, too, that isn’t there tonight. There is some hope on that end of the court.

RN will be a player

but with the youth we have, we need JK and his experience and steadiness. Just watch our offense and he KNOWS where to go and he does a lot of little things that do not show up in the boxscore.

by BlueReign on Nov 20, 2009 9:20 PM PST up reply actions

JK and experience

I remember in one of the preseason games, on defending the picks, you’d watch DG or whoever try to show on the ball handler and putting up rather token resistance, then JK comes in and defends the same play and hedges the guy about 4-5 feet away from where he wanted to go. I can’t wait till our young bigs can do that as well as JK can. The defense will be a lot better when they do.

Just got home, quick thoughts

First, wasn’t that fun? I told you guys that this is going to be a fun year.

Second, we have depth in all the wrong places. RN is proving to be a perfect junkyard dog with very strong hands that gobble up loose balls. I really really like BL. Saw him play in highschool and saw a lot of potential, good to see him get some time today. I can definitely see him as our best player two years from now. DG was solid and showed that he is starting to come into his own. Gameball goes to JK who picked apart the zone from the high post.

Third, we have to start valuing possessions better. So many lazy/misguided/reckless passes, particularly by our guards. Same goes for free throws.
