2009 Wooden Classic: Ben Ball (Mississippi State) Open Thread

Mississippi St. Bulldogs at UCLA Bruins, Dec 12, 2009 1:30 PM PST

In just about 10 mins Bruins will be making their 13th appearance in the John R. Wooden Classic. The Bruins are 9-3 (.750) all-time in Wooden Classic matchups. UCLA is 8-0 in the Wooden Classic when they are ranked and 1-3 as an unranked team.  Things have been rough for 2-5 Bruins who are entering this game with a 4 game losing streak. Still there were some encouraging signs during Bruins last outing against number 1 Kansas Jayhawks, during which it seemed like they were starting over with the debut of Tyler Honeycutt and without Drew Gordon.

It is not going to get any easier this afternoon against a red hot 5-2 Bulldogs team. As we have noted in our pre-game coverage they are coming in this game as a red hot shooting team and with one of the most impressive big men in the country (defensively) dominating the middle. We will need a superhuman effort from Reeves Nelson and his team-mates to end our losing streak, giving us some desperately needed momentum during rest of the out of conference season.

So here is to our guys pulling off a huge upset. The tipoff is scheduled for 1:40 pm PST. You can watch it on FSN/PT and can track via the official site. Also, WWL boxscore here.  As always if you are watching the game, share your instant thoughts/commentary here in our game thread. Fire away.

GO BRUINS.

I wouldn't call it a huge upset

Mississippi St. isn’t overly impressive and I can’t give too much credit to a team that is 5-2 against an embarrassingly poor schedule, but we will need to play well if we are to win. Mediocre won’t get it done against the Bulldogs.

They're not a very good passing team

and throwing the ball opens up the chance to get picked, giving Army points. The Navy defense has been stout so running it will make sure you don’t turn it over as well as wear down Army. One touchdown could be all it takes to win this one.

So the last time we played MSU

was in the tourney against Dampier and company. That’s a great memory for me. My brother and I got tickets last minute from ny bro’s best friend. He was a bench player for the Cal Bears in the Kidd/Murray/Gonzales days. He was the one whose name would be chanted by the students at the end of blowout! “GURA, GURA” lol. Anyway, seeing the games against MSU and UConn and being on the court when Ed O and company cut down the nets is something I’ll never forget.

Wooden Classic memories

I was there for the first one, in 1994, against Kentucky. J.R. Henderson hitting two free throws with :01 left to win the game. Besides that, the highlight was seeing someone that had hung a Pauley-style championship banner listing all of our championship years…and they had 1995 on it! We all remember what happened that season…

Man I hope the PAC 10 is as bad as advertised. Because this is a bad team. This could be an embarassing season. The crazy thing is that they have talent but the makeup of the team is not right. Too many 6’7 guys with undeveloped games no post precence awful outside shooting and most important guard play is well the worst maybe ever. Lee trying to figure things out I think he will. Anderson not D 1 talent especially UCLA D1 talent

I don't care about guys going to NBA early

there is no excuse for the lack of talent and production on this team. I love Howland and what he has done, and believe we will rise from the ashes, but we should never have a year like this. Is there ANY justification for having a worse record than Lavin ever did? I think we may be looking at just that this year. Maybe Howland needs to work harder on his talent evaluation. Get guys who are more than just highly rated. These sophomore should be better, and why haven’t Roll, Drago, and Keefe developed more? Just so frustrating. Yes, Howland started out amazingly

by dokein on Dec 12, 2009 2:30 PM PST up reply actions

The game has changed drastically in the last three years

Howland’s principles can still work, but the game has changed some and CBH needs to adjust to best succeed. I have faith he can do it, but it’s not a one day or one week adjustment. There are small adjustments to start, but this will continue through the rest of the year, then in recruiting, then into next season. The game changes, now CBH needs to change with it.

It's Howland's style though.

He always plays the players with the most minutes. I’m just wondering how bad the recruits really are. He didn’t play them a lot last year either. I specifically remembered plenty of post last year saying, the recruiting class was not ready, and this is just the result of it.

But yeah, overall, Howland needs to do more coaching cuz his seniors aren’t playing to his caliber or that of the school

by wingsabre on Dec 12, 2009 2:32 PM PST up reply actions

There is a disconnect between the teams of JF, AA, DC, LRMBM, and PAA . . .

. . . and this squad. The seniors appear to have broken the bond. The underclassmen don’t understand how to play like the Ball Ball Warriors of old.

by orlandobruin on Dec 12, 2009 2:32 PM PST up reply actions

I think the reason for this is how we played last year.

The recruits were less defensive oriented, so Howland had to adapt and be more aerobatic like Jrue Holiday. Now we’re seeing a team that doesn’t understand defense and is trying to be aerobatic, when they themselves aren’t Jrue Holiday.

Proposed Trade

Would anyone trade the program, as it stands on 12/11/09, for the program, as it stood on 12/11/03 or 12/11/04? I am talking a total swap ……roster, coach, early signings …..in other words, going forward, is the program any better off today than it was ten games into the Howland era or 20 games from the conclusion of the Lavin era. My take …..no way do I trade this group for 2004 and 2003 is a tough call.

As a basketball coach and UCLA fan

I am embarrassed by the attitude and display this team is making in front of Bill Walton and Coach Wooden……….and for that matter all of Bruin Nation. You are not going to win when nobody on your team can shoot. You aren’t going to win when you have no athletisism. You aren’t going to win by doing the same stuff with lesser skilled players than you have in the past. And you surely aren’t going to win when you quit on the court, which this team has. I can’t believe Coach isn’t making some drastic changes in his gameplan when we have seen this over and over. I haven’t seen him play zone at all, and Mississippi State is shredding our man to man like it is jello!! Our offensive sets are all the same, the only difference is that we don’t have Darren, Aaron, Jordan, Love, etc………..to bail us out when they don’t work. We have a bunch of young kids who should be getting all the time in the world. However, they are learning from guys like ND how to quit. He is an embarrassment to the uniform. I am tired of seeing him out there. Why not put Lane in there? He couldn’t be that bad…..not 0-7 bad. I am at a loss for words.

Athletic ability

Malcolm Lee is the only player that has the athletic skills to create his own shot. Moser is too raw offensively.

Other than that we are athletically inferior to most teams. Most of our players excelled in high school because they were taller than their opponents. Bobo only averaged 14 points per game (very low for a 7 footer)

I know I didn’t grow up watching Wooden, but I have heard that one of the most amazing things about the Coach is that he tailored his gameplans to suit his current roster. They would run one year, grind the next. Why won’t Ben alter his style to suit his players. Or, why doesn’t he recruit players who will match his style. You have to pick a way.

is our best player is Reeves, whose effectiveness is cut in half because he has to play out of position at center.

Talent

Time to be honest and tell it like it is. This team is going to be bad for the next few years if TALENT is not recruited. This freshman and soph class is full of non-division 1 players. Apparently Howland has made huge mistakes in talent evaluation the pass few years. Miss. St is not even a ranked team and is beating the dog out of these Bruins. It’s an embarrassment to the school and program. Words don’t decribe how bad this is anymore.

by LouisianaBruins on Dec 12, 2009 2:51 PM PST reply actions

Stop playing the seniors who are not giving 100 percent effort

Make adjustments in our offense to fit the available athleticism in the team. Play youngsters like Moser and Lane who have lot more upside than players such as Dragovic and Keefe.

by Nestor on Dec 12, 2009 2:56 PM PST up reply actions

Agreed

This class was ranked better than previous classes.

Honestly, it looks like Howland does better with a lower ranked class than a higher ranked one. Look at Collison. He was passed over by Arizona. Howland’s better at making stars.

I hate the go young and play for next year attitude

I think it ruins the attitude of your program, sends an awful message to your players and kills you in recruiting. I believe you do what’s best for your team and helps them win. Now, I would argue that the younger players give us a better chance to win, so I would go young, but for that reason, not because I’m playing for next year.

by Ryan Rosenblatt on Dec 12, 2009 3:00 PM PST up reply actions

The attitude looks to have been damaged already

with the way Dragovic has gotten all the mins. Why bother working hard when Chokola Dragovic still hogs all the mins.

by Nestor on Dec 12, 2009 3:01 PM PST up reply actions

Best for the team

wouldbe for JK and ND to sit on the bench or at least get less minutes

by EdO'B3017 on Dec 12, 2009 3:02 PM PST up reply actions

No arguments there

and seeing guys not working their tails off and still playing hurts the team TODAY. I’d like to see us go somewhat younger because it improves us for now and changes this year’s attitude, which is better for the long-term attitude of the program. Do it for today and it will pay dividends tomorrow.

by Ryan Rosenblatt on Dec 12, 2009 3:03 PM PST up reply actions

I have opposed going young just to look for next year

but I am absolutely convinced our younger players will play harder and we will be better with them.

We are not getting leadership or effort from our older players. And, I’m not sure they are more skilled.

MR is the only “older” player I’d play.

Highly agree - no youth for youth's sake

As commented previously, play the people who give you the best chance to win, based on your evaluation of their performance in practice.

Frankly, CBH doesn’t strike me as an overly sentimental sort who would be playing ND, JK et al just because they are in their last year, so my guess is that the youngsters still aren’t stepping up and showing that they have what it takes to play his way better than the older players.

I have absolutely no problem with the grind it out, slow paced game. We have to make our shots though. Is anyone on the team capable of throwing a ball in the air and making it pass through a hoop with any modicum of consistency?

For some reason, they thought they were stars from day one at UCLA

by UCLABruins4Ever on Dec 12, 2009 3:04 PM PST up reply actions

I think were overlooking the fact that

Most players on this team are refusing to buy into Howlands work ethic. It takes hard work and dedication to play the tough defensive system Coach has created to succeed in. I want these guys divng for balls. Throwing up their hands during shots. Drawing fouls. Being physical and not afraid to fight for the ball. What is this crap!? I don’t want pre madonnas!

by UCLABRU1 on Dec 12, 2009 3:03 PM PST via mobile reply actions

I agree with you on that statement.

Team isn’t displaying any tenacity of discipline and it’s not because of the lack of “talent” or “athleticism”. It’s just a lack of effort.

There isn’t much on the current roster that will make a meaninuful contribution to a big NCAA team. UCLA is in a start-over mode. Think 2003. Think 1986. Think 1946.

You need to save those moments from true heartbreakers.

Not blowouts. These games just make me miserable, not want to break things.

It’s games like the ND v. UCLA football game in South Bend a few years back that make me break stuff.

In any event, we are down 18 with about 2 minutes left.
