Center Court: Ben Ball (Notre Dame) Open Thread
UCLA Bruins at Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Dec 19, 2009 11:00 AM PST
Well here we go. The conventional wisdom points to the Fighting Irish getting their revenge at Joyce Center for last year's Bruin destruction in Pauley. I believe Mike Brey's team is about 12 points favorite heading into this afternoon's tipoff starting around 11 am PST. If the Bruins are going to have a shot this afternoon they will have to stick with the classic Ben Ball formula of fundamentally sound offense and the kind of hard nosed defense that will have Nelson, Honeycutt and rest of their team-mates inside the Irish jerseys all afternoon long.
If you want to get up to speed on 9-2 Notre Dame team, you can check out our game coverage here. You should know by now that the game will be televised on CBS. You can track the game here.
May be, just may be the Bruins will come out inspired and give us an all our defensive effort that will make Digger cry. Fire away.
GO BRUINS.

Drago with the rebound on the other end. Jerime tried to be fancy, loses the ball. AHHHH hansbororough for 3 and is fouled. Damnit.

Anderson is doing some good things. He’s just a little wild and needs to know where he can and can’t go on the court
If Anderson could make a pull-up jumper

give him a rest, get him ready for the stretch
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
When he comes back in ...
it’ll be for the rest of the game. Every player needs a blow once in awhile.

2 free throws made?
What a novel idea

meant to say mm's D is good right?
Not getting much from JA right now.
Use Lee at point and MM.

MM can move pretty well
but he’s really a 3 and struggles against 2’s, while he’s outmuscled easily by 3’s. I like his skill set, but he needs to get stronger.

but he’s young.

OH MY GOD
What the HELL was that pass JA? We got bailed out!
"The entire world that bleeds blue and gold ... they have been dying for this." - Coach Rick Neuheisel
Because he can't create his own shot
So it’s not easy to get him shots.

Roll is best
when he is the 3rd of 4th best offensive option on the floor

Yeah, it’s just frustrating to see Drago force up bricks every time down.

What are the odds
that Pauley is that full or that loud at any point all season?

by Ryan Rosenblatt on Dec 19, 2009 12:37 PM PST reply actions
I have already written a post on this
Brendan Lane can’t do any worse than this guy. At least Lane would give us effort instead of lollygagging and setting a poor example for everyone else.
Not to defend Drago
but JA is a far bigger liability to this team. JA should be our third option off the bench not a starter.
by snorkeldorf on Dec 19, 2009 12:41 PM PST up reply actions
MR with a bad pass
then killed on D. Roll has shot well, but has been poor in every other aspect.

Over.....team doesn't have what it takes to overcome this lead right now
by UCLABruins4Ever on Dec 19, 2009 12:38 PM PST reply actions
ja should be a bench player
we are much better with TH in there at the 3 and Lee and Roll as guards. He must know that, so this is frustrating
its been a different team...
6 min into the first half… they lost a lot of their shooting percentage lost intensity… i saw it going downhill then but hoped theyd get it back in the locker room
ND was giving us space and playing some zone early on
Now they’re pressuring high and daring us to beat them off the dribble. We don’t have many guys who can do that.

haha when i first read that i was thinking Nik Drago
not Notre Dame
William Doolittle at your service, a.k.a. will do.
TH is so active
so that, combined with his athletic ability, makes good things happen, even if it;s just drawing a foul.

no, the gody is just HORRIBLE on D
he’s the next troy murphy
I will grant you fearless
but he won’t have much chance vs. a legitimate center.
by snorkeldorf on Dec 19, 2009 12:44 PM PST up reply actions
Granted I don't see alot of KU Basketball
But I have yet to see much that impresses me about Aldrich other than that he’s able to consistently make his FTs with that horrendous form.
by snorkeldorf on Dec 19, 2009 12:48 PM PST up reply actions
and he'll be playing PF next year if Josh Smith is as good as advertized
that could be a fun frontcourt
William Doolittle at your service, a.k.a. will do.
Our biggest problem is we're so dependent on RN
and he loses a chunk of his effectiveness because he has to play out of position. Getting him to PF next year will be huge.

Only way we get back in this
we need a lot of turnovers and fast break points
at least that was one of them if we can make the FTs
Defense on our end
leads to a break for Malcolm, and he’s fouled on the other end. FREE THROWS… come on
ok guys
i’ve had diarrhea all night and when i first tuned in to the game it was already in the 2nd half
Can anyone sum up the game for me
it was like eating street tacos in tijuana
Starts out great, but by the end turned to shit.
I’m sure you know the feeling.

Nice
graphic for ML btw by CBS. Sheesh
Oh UCLA you sweet bitch, you've BRUINed me for anything else.
What I like
ML, RN, and TH. There’s a bit of promise there, if we can play some D.
WHY
is JA in the game???
"The entire world that bleeds blue and gold ... they have been dying for this." - Coach Rick Neuheisel
They didn’t call that at Modesto Christian.

if everyone is down on Dragovic
you have to take a long hard look at JA
I think he brings more than Drag and JA
one way or another I think he should be inserted in the starting line up
William Doolittle at your service, a.k.a. will do.
One of the keys to D
is knowing where you are on the floor and where your teammates are. That’s something I think everyone on the team is struggling with. They don’t use sidelines, space or help to their advantage.

Well, assuming the game is over
The one thing I got from this game.
Lee is turning into Neo. He’s starting to believe.
(ok, that’s the nerd in me. he’s starting to emerge as the dominant player)
And that sums up the season.
He's not retired...THANK YOU!
TH is going to be a star.

TH in steel / forced jump
if there is a positive maybe this game shows TH should be in starting lineup.. lee more confident offensively.. dragovic realizes he should try to go inside instead of outside
Looking on the bright side
With the exception of a couple of people, this team is really improving. This is much better than what we were seeing a couple of weeks ago. There is fight and heart out there. Good experience on the road for the young guys.
"The entire world that bleeds blue and gold ... they have been dying for this." - Coach Rick Neuheisel

wait,
Am i an idiot or did I see Harangony push off with the arm and we get the foul called?
no defense today...
CBH teams of old would have held this team to 65 points and we would have won. instead they scored 80 and we lose…. :(
I like the fight down the stretch
we’ve got sufficient talent on this team … just need to put the right pieces in the right place.
Damn, either Lee knows how to break some ankles
That’s like his 5th time I’ve seen that,or that defender has really poor lateral movement and bites too much.
What we need
is a semi-competent starting point guard.

What is with Drago's leg kick defending the inbound?
He's not retired...THANK YOU!
I think we may lose some winnable games
because of JA and ND, but I dont think there’s anything that can be done, its JA or Mustafa….but I will continue to believe that TH brings more to the table than ND
William Doolittle at your service, a.k.a. will do.
Damn if Lee was hitting this well in the last few games
We’d have won 2 more
I just hope JA finds his soon!
We need a strong PG with leadership.
One thing though...
People were down on ML, but even some of those thought he should start – more upside.
Great Game
Lee, Roll and Nelson!
"The entire world that bleeds blue and gold ... they have been dying for this." - Coach Rick Neuheisel
Sorry, I didn't love Roll's game
Yes, he shot well, but he was beat so consistently on D, didn’t come back to the boards and his passing wasn’t the excellence it usually is.

I personally cheer for the Pac-10 against the SEC whenever I can
I live in KY
Louisville, KY for UCLA class of '87
About our impressive offense today
remember Notre Dame has been struggling defensively.
Oh UCLA you sweet bitch, you've BRUINed me for anything else.
how can we continue to man?
ND, JA, MR can’t guard anyone man-2-man… MR is so important offensively that he has earned every minute he plays… JA and ND should not be playing the amount of minutes they play.. and they certainly should not have all 3 on the court at the same time trying to play man-2-man. Clearly TH, ML and RN should be starters and logging the most minutes. Every other minute should be up for grabs. We are not nearly as bad as our record, but we will not be good either as long as ND and JA continue to start and play those minutes.
