NCAA Tells Timmeh To Lawyer Up

From the LA Times:

In his first interview with the Los Angeles media since he quit as USC's basketball coach last June, Floyd told of feeling betrayed by Garrett beginning in July of 2008 when, Floyd said, during a telephone conversation with NCAA investigator, LuAnn Humphrey, it was suggested to Floyd he needed legal counsel.

"She told me I needed to get an attorney," Floyd said. "I said I hadn't done anything wrong. She said, 'No, you need to get an attorney.' "

Floyd said that Humphrey told him the NCAA investigations involving Trojans football player Reggie Bush and basketball player O.J. Mayo were moving into the area of USC's possible lack of institutional control.

When Floyd told Humphrey he hadn't done anything wrong and that he didn't need an attorney, Floyd said Humphrey told him, "You need to think about the Ohio State situation."

Floyd said when he asked what that meant, Humphrey told Floyd to think about how when there were questions about Ohio State football player Maurice Clarrett, it was the Ohio State basketball program under Jim O'Brien that eventually suffered severe NCAA sanctions with O'Brien getting fired.

It was then, Floyd said, when he felt that Garrett abandoned him.

"At that point," Floyd said, "all support stopped. It was a bitter pill to swallow. Mike's reputation took precedence over the truth. All loyalty, all support stopped."

Read rest of the piece here.

It's an amusing read but I still wouldn't get my hopes up about the NCAA holding those guys accountable.

So, let me get this straight . . .

. . . Timmeh is accusing the NCAA of implying that the $UC* hoops program is going to suffer for the transgressions of the $UC* football program?

I know that we have been speculating about this since the Mayo story came out but, assuming Timmeh is telling the truth, this is (more) proof that the NCAA is a joke and will protect its cash cows.

Maybe there should be an investigation of Ms. Humphrey and the NCAA . . .

Humphrey and Ohio St.

So basically suc has already been “punished” by ncaa. Football program is untouched and basketball head coach “quit”.

College FB and BB are big businesses, after all. ncaa cannot afford to sanction their elite football programs (Ohio St and suc) and risk losing $$$.

Maybe someone at FSU or some other school with a beef (real or perceived) knows a congressperson with some spare time.

If someone in congress decides that the ncaa isn’t playing fairly with its members and that congressional oversight is needed, then there has to be some focus on just$c.* I accept as a fact that just$c* will have bought plenty of California congresspersons, but I doubt if just$c* could buy enough.

By the way, orlando, you are making a MIGHTY leap of faith. You say “assuming Timmeh is telling the truth….” Think about Mayogate and what Timmeh said about it, and how that episode juxtaposes with “assuming Timmeh is telling the truth.”

I’m sure Timmeh is telling the truth when he says that he got no support from Garrett. Garrett would gladly throw Timmeh overboard to save Cheatie Petie.

As the Sleaze Turns

The criminals at $C don’t care who pays who and how much or which teachers hand out “A” grades to “student” athletes like candy. It’s all about the wins and the dinero. The only people who don’t get it are the IQ-challenged bureaucrats at the NCAA. Even $C supporters know the real deal…they just don’t care.

Timmeh’s a sleazebag just like Carroll and Garrett. I thought he fit in just fine.

I believe Floyd

I might get some flak for this here, but I completely believe Floyd. My skepticism of the NCAA (from talking with agents and actual NCAA officials) combined with the $C only caring about its football program may be influencing my belief, but I find it entirely plausible that SC would throw Floyd under the bus to protect the football team. I know we all joked about this back when it happened, but I am pretty confident it is what actually happened.

I know Timmeh has been a fun whipping boy for us here because he was the coach at $C, but I actually have respect for him as a coach. Sure he gets a lot heated at times and acts nutty, but as an in-game X and Os coach, he is better than most. His defense at SC rivaled ours the last few years and he is doing a solid job (with a lot of help from DC) in turning the Hornets around.

I have no animosity toward Floyd. The way I see it, he is no longer a Trojan and probably has a lot more resentment towards that administration because of how they threw him to the wolves then we do.

I can't support him

The OJ2 thing killed all chances of that.

I'm not saying he is Coach Wooden...

…all I’m saying is that given the choice between Floyd and Garret/Carroll, I would choose Floyd every time.

Well that's not much of a choice there

And yeah, I believe him when he (reading between the lines) says that he was thrown under the bus. I was more speaking to the whole “respecting him as a coach” thing.

Mike Garrett

hired the girl in the casino with the chair. Floyd was going to take one in the back of the head before she was stopped. I guess the girl would not be getting the other half of the payment that she was promised by garrett and carroll.

Tim,

When your former boss tells you to get a lawyer…
get a lawyer, you pompous jackass.

Actually, it would be better for the world if Timmeh didn't get a lawyer

He would be taken apart quickly and easily, and it might cause the wheels to come off the just$c* bus. Think of the possibilities – Timmeh telling the truth about what happened inside Inheritance Hall.

Nah – it would never happen, and even if it did, the ncaa wouldn’t do anything.

The new Miranda rule

My lawyer friends talk about the Miranda v. Arizona rule which requires the police to advise arrestees of the right to silence and a free lawyer. If Floyd is telling the truth, then this Humphreys “investigator” just made new law—she created a new rule—coaches subject to an NCAA investigation now get their Miranda rights read to them. I would tend to doubt Floyd, but the years old “investigation” into the dimwitted faux diploma factory shows the NCAA “investigators” are a bunch of bewildering incompetent keystone kops. This history would be consistent with an alleged “investigator” warning a target to clam and lawyer up. At least the cops only warn the criminal of the right to silence and a lawyer, they don’t tell the perpetrator, “Quick, call Johnny Cochran before you talk to me.”

Last Sunday, on the Fox NFL studio show Terry Bradshaw explained it was only Congressional pressure that caused the league, a billion dollar enterprise, to change its policy on concussions. It will regretfully require some outside force to embarrass probably college presidents to make the NCAA start acting like a values based investigative agency rather than consigliare to a mob boss.

Maybe this Humphreys character has been smeared by Floyd. If so, the NCAA should deny his claims in the very near term. If the NCAA takes the Fifth, then Floyd for once in his professional life is a credible witness. And if she is innocent, her employer owes it to her to clear her name and do it now. But getting the NCAA to tell the truth may be as difficult as getting value from a USC degree.
