OT: Some More Bad News Regarding UCLA
For those of you who don't know, I am currently exiled in Birmingham while Mr. BB is working on his PhD in clinical psychology. Right now, he is on track to complete his dissertation in spring, then start internship summer 2010 to complete his education. As part of the deal, he applied to places west of the Rockies so that we can be closer to our families. One of them was UCLA.
Unfortunately, UCLA turned him down for internship and we are a little disappointed. However, we still have our fingers crossed for the West LA and Long Beach VA hospitals, as well as the San Diego VA.
So far, only the University of Arizona has offered him an interview. While they have a good internship program and he is happy to get this offer, I'm not sure of the possibility of living in Tucson, even if it is only for a year.
Anyway, we find out in late February where we move to next and I will let you all know, at the very least to see if any of you are in the lucky city.

sorry to hear UCLA didn't work out
I’ve lived in Tucson. If you’re only there on a short-term basis, it’s not bad. A huge plus is that the housing costs are even lower than what the SoCal market has sunk to. Tucson has an amazing place called Bookman’s: they have used books/CDs/movies/video games/a bunch of other stuff, usually around half retail or less, and they take your stuff in trade. There’s nothing like it in SoCal. They have three locations in Tucson, each one the size of a grocery store. Highly recommended! I’m visiting family there in a few weeks, and outside of seeing them, I’m more excited about going to Bookman’s than going to In-N-Out, and that’s saying something.

Tucson's a great town
Local politicians are complete fools, but the town itself and its surroundings are great. I have visited often since I have friends and family there. I also spent a summer taking a couple of classes at the U of A.
I’d say avoid hyperbolic assessments telling you to avoid Tucson “like the plague.”
Thanks for the info
Internship is only for a year, and I would try to do my best to convince him to do post-doc in California. Yes, I have checked out the rents and they are good. As for local politicians, there are some fools in Birmingham and Jefferson County, so I’m used to that.
So far the cities in the running are San Diego, LA (West LA and Long Beach), Bay Area (Palo Alto and Martinez), Portland, Seattle, Phoenix, Tucson and Albuquerque.
In some ways, I would actually prefer West LA or Long Beach to UCLA. Both will pay better and West LA would give him access to UCLA’s facilities. As far as Long Beach, it’s cheaper than the Westside and closer to my folks, who would be able to watch Jonathan. Still, it would have been nice to go back to where it all started for us.
Tucson is a nice enough college town
But it’s probably not somewhere I would want to live long term, so it might work out well for a year for your family. My brother-in-law went to UA and loved it, but even he admits that he wouldn’t live there now. There are definitely worse places…
Been here 5 years
and I love it. The weather is great, the food is awesome and there is plenty to keep you busy. If you remember to set your car alarm and learn to dodge the snowbirds on the road you will be just fine down here.
West LA is almost as good . . .
10 minutes from campus, Pauley, and an hour and a half from the Rose Bowl!

Gee, foolish local politicians
How unusual. Politicians generally are the complete anthesis of foolish. Look at Sacramento or, better, look at Washington DC. You never see anything foolish in those places.
Thanks for the condescension
Tucson’s Rio Nuevo project may be the country’s finest example of abject government waste. I was just trying to be helpful. Thought I could do so without getting a smarmy response. Guess not.
I think Fox was supporting you
and was, in effect, defending Tucson by pointing out that local politicians can be a problem anywhere.
greg in denver - UCLA guy for life
That's what I was trying to do.
I sort of enjoy the hysterical press-releases that get issued during the annual budget stalemate: “We’ll have to shut down government!!!” The politicians are trOJanlike in their arrogance – they actually think that anyone would care if they stopped legislating things for a year or ten.
