Special Saturday Open Thread: Holiday Bowl Season Edition
Well, not sure how many of you are going to be around BN tonight. If you are hanging out over and are keeping track of few bowl games going on today here is a place to put up all your quick takes and observations.
I imagine everyone here will keep an eye on a particular game from tonight but the game between UNC and Pitt should be a pretty good game between two evenly matched teams. I like the defense Butch Davis is putting together in Chapel Hill and it will be interesting to see how the Panthers (9-3, 5-2 in the Big East) come out and play in this game after choking it all away against Cincy Bearcats. UNC had a decent season in Davis's third year with a record of 8-4 and 4-4 in the ACC.
You can keep track of the scores over here. One game is already underway. A 6-6 Marshall team is beating up 9-4 Ohio team from the MAC conference (Ohio also happened to be the last opponent Temple played this season) in the third quarter by a score of 21-7. Anyway, if you are taking in all the actions today, here is your open thread. Fire away.
GO BRUINS.

Marshall is playing great
I am definitely surprised at how well the Herd are playing. They just seem to want this game more than the Bobcats. Ohio probably came into this game disappointed since they lost the MAC title game.
I think its a big reason SMU was able to come out so strong against Nevada
You could tell we were loving every minute of being in Hawaii, and the intensity showed on the field. I think its the reason underdogs have played so well thus far, and I really hope UCLA doesnt fall into the same trap.
William Doolittle at your service, a.k.a. will do.
Yep
Very similar situation to what we have in Temple. It’s a big reason some of the recent shenanigans around our team seem disconcerting to me. I hope I am wrong.
agreed
all we can hope is that everyone practices hard, makes curfew, and is focused in D.C. Nevada had just about everything go wrong that could go wrong, disciplinary issues, academic issues, injuries, it all seemed to ruin their moral heading into the game. Well, that, and a couple of deep bombs right up the heart of the field from Padron : )
William Doolittle at your service, a.k.a. will do.
Ohio
is making a nice comeback now. This is a pretty good game.
Can't even watch a random bowl game
without Chetey rearing his ugly head at halftime with more b.s.
"If you don't take out his battery, he's going to keep going all day."
The missed field goal by Ohio
makes me even more thankful that we have Kai Forbath.
Meineke Car Care Bowl
Touchdown UNC. Tar Heels up 17-16 with 4 minutes left in the 4th quarter. This game has been a defensive battle.
holy crap
espn.com has a story up that says it’s for “health reasons”
Has there ever been a player better than Detlef Schrempf?

Huge story
Best wishes to Meyer and hope he gets his health back. Florida despite the on field success has been having lot of off field issues last 2-3 years. Their rapsheet was getting pretty long.
Heart defect, according to tWWL's latest update.

Saw that too.
That was out of the blue, huh?
Too bad
Meyer looked to my unschooled eye that he was a quality coach and more importantly a good man.
McKnight ain't playing
According to ESPN, Range Rover McKnight isn’t playing.
Interesting
I kind of wish he was playing then at least 40 percent of the broadcast would have been about $C scandals. In any event they are a little screwed. If he doesn’t play, then it means something is really rotten in Peteyville.
Wow
For once $C does not get their way. Yes!!!
Rod Gilmore--ESPN reporter
Mr. Gilmore just quoted Carroll as stating that Land Rover McKnight did nothing wrong. Lying to the L.A. Times is not wrong. Pete—you avatar of ethics.
Field Goal Pitt
19-17 Pitt with :56 seconds left in 4th
Did Meyer's resignation just give USC a new lease on life?
It’s clear to all of us that cracks are starting to show in the program across town. But looking at the recruiting lists, it’s clear that a good deal of the remaining undecided blue chip recruits are looking hard at both USC and Florida. When the dust settles, it might be USC who is the biggest beneficiary of Meyer’s resignation. The likes of Ronald Powell, Dietrich Riley, and others just might be swayed toward SC when they might have been Gainesville bound otherwise.
This is just sheer speculation, but it’s a scary thought to ponder.
UNC turns it over on downs
Pitt will win the game 19-17. A great defensive battle.
the RAIN
should play a big factor into this game. should favor BC
The Boston College Coach
looks like one of the Mario Bros…
Touchdown SC
a 53 yard pass by Barkley to Havili. 7-0 Trojies
$c scores a td
missed tackle results on a 7-0 $c lead

Barkley's mouth piece
makes him look like he is missing a tooth.
BC needs to play pretty flawlessly to beat the thugs
and so far, is not doing so….
Interesting that the BC Offense looks a little tentative, but the Defense looks unintimidated….
lol
Korea Town bbq is pretty good too. All LAers should go :-)
I really wanna try that K BBQ truck thats going around LA next time I’m in town
I heard about that
apparently there’s a bunch of trucks that get together like the first or second saturday night of the month in Venice….buddy happened upon it a couple weeks ago…
ha
Actually if I lived in LA, I would have taken up your suggestions. Don’t have that luxury in DC (may be they have that stuff in Koreatown in Northern VA, but don’t really go out to VA too much).
N have to know that for the kid
She craves korean food every week or so. Well she is Korean and all.
Geezer in training.
The wife's sis in law used to work at a place that did some good bbq
They were one of only places that did it on charcole.

True Nestor
But the wife’s korean and good korean markets here in LA. Korean food here is almost as Korea. And Paul’s right, Galbi rules. We had Galbi(Kalbi) for xmas dinner.
Geezer in training.
Totally
and the refs let the cal stand!!!!!! Cheatey was probably whining to the ref closest to him.
let the CALL stand
man I’ve had one too many typos today. I guess I’m still in holiday mode.
14-6 USC
BC just missed an extra point. 9:54 left in 2nd quarter.
Touchdown SC
Barkley to Havili again. 14-0 Trojies.
Couldn't see when Williams got possession of the ball
I don’t think he got a foot in, but the camera angle made it so it wasn’t indisputable so it had to stand.

BC is driving
thanks to Montel Harris. He is providing a spark for the Eagles.
Can you guys post updates (field position) and scores?
Not frequently, every now and then if the game is still on the line? Thanks!
ya I'll post as long as I'm here
may be heading out to dinner soon

Strange, I thought suc basketball would be a joke this year
they’ve already beaten two top 25 teams and have a better record than us. Yikes!

it’s a good movie; I was able to see how recruiting in the South can be highly competitive.

13-14 USC after BC opts for an extra point
William Doolittle at your service, a.k.a. will do.
That receiver had some speed...
outran most of the secondary on that one..
I think Taylor Mays is hurt
For all his issues not hitting people after the play and inability to play in coverage, he’s always been freakishly fast, but he doesn’t look it tonight.

Of course he did….why else do you think he threw a bitch-fit when Sanchez announced?

they’ll be punting to BC

BC coach has the wrong attitude
SUCsters aren’t gods. Don’t try to get to the fourth quarter and convert a last second drive to beat them. Way too much respect for those bastards.
Take Oregon’s approach. Take Stanford—err Gerhart’s approach = beat the living crap out of them and send them home with a 30 pt defeat.
Definitely
SUC used to be a damn good team. A loss for them would mean barely falling short against an opponent once per year. Forget that nonsense. This year (and hopefully from here on out), a loss for them means they get thoroughly outplayed, out-coached. F*ck $UC!
Yep yep. :)
I love ranting sometimes.
I’m just glad they’re losing. Their institutional downfall is coming and we’ll all be there to smile at their charred remains.
I think Barfley was already rattled
that series before the punt he missed a couple passes…..hopefully he starts pouting and regresses even more from here on out…
hahaha! I KNOW!
Teacups are really great though.
It’s cool to see the ducks there. Good for them. Probably beats late December in Eugene.
Used to go a few times in college
The roommate and I would try to who could take “control” of the teacup. One of the original rides at Disneyland.

If you go to the Rose Bowl...
They send you to Disneyland and Lawreys. I’m not so upset that CRN took the team to Magic Mountian.

THAT'S WHAT NEEDED TO HAPPEN!!!
Perfect glorious start to the second half. Barkley is a whining loser. Go Eagles!
Hey Guys
Just got back from Colorado late this afternoon and finished up getting stuff put away. Am glad to be back home – except for the blizzard we got here in the Twin Cities while I was away. Am watching the Nut Bowl right now; rooting hard for BC. Thought they were going to forge ahead then they fumbled it away. Hope they can stop ’SC here.

it is a 10 pt turnaround
But all things considered, I’ll take it. BC for sure has to respond on this drive with at least a FG
I feel like the friend in Clerks II
but is it bad that I don’t feel especially bad for that kid?
I’m a horrible human being, I know.

But am disgusted at how ESPN and the rest of the MSM have used this as another toy to glorify ’SC.

what these announcers don't realize is that
you need indisputable evidence if it isn’t SUC. Otherwise it is always rule in favor of SUC

Oh My God
I’m completely flabbergasted. What the hell. Screw this game. usc will win with a HUGE asterisk
Joe McNight'a parting gift to Petey...
He sold off the Range Rover so that he could take care of the Ref’s draw for this last game.
formerly bruinhoo
This reminds me of the one game in Remember the Titans
BC: “We’re going to blitz ALL NIGHT”
Then they keep scoring and the obviously compromised refs have no choice but to give them the win.
Alcatraz to U$C Football players
is like “I am going to college program” for smart CA high school students.

There was a U$C pass
It was out of bounds, ruled inbounds, set up their second TD.
Geezer in training.
Didn't have a problem with that call
Borderline, but it looked like he probably had his foot in (at least from tWWL’s camera angle).
formerly bruinhoo
I could certainly be wrong on that
From the angle, I could not tell whether the receiver had possession or not. Sadly, the camera was useless so far as challenging the on-field call.

Bill Splashme
Damien Williams is a beast, great catch of Barkley longball, USC punches it in at start of fourth, leads 24-13, but shud have dominated
Beating themselves
This game is more of a loss for BC than a win for $C. They (SC) look so beatable. If BC had a decent QB and some WR’s who could actually catch it might be closer….
Things Turned For BC
When they lost that fumble when they had 1st and goal early on in the 3rd quarter. They score there and they not only get ahead but it changes the complexion of the game immensely.

Think That Would Have Been The '78 Season
The year before in ’77 we came up here to play the Gophs at old Memorial Stadium. I was still at home in Iowa but from what I heard it was raining for a good chunk of the game and we got trounced that day 27-17; not as close as the score indicates as we were down 27-7 at one point.
