Pac-10 Basketball Tipoff Podcast (6 pm PST)

The Pac-10 season is upon us. By the time we begin our podcast tonight at 6 pm PST, we'll be less than 20 hours away from the Bruins' Pac-10 opener at Pauley versus the Arizona St. Sun Devils. It should be a dandy of a game and while the Bruins have gotten off to a rough start, they have won three of four and the Pac-10 is extremely weak. UCLA has not seen all hope extinguished yet and playing two teams who are quality, by Pac-10 standards, but not outstanding is a good way to get a good idea of what this UCLA team is all about. Join us for the basketball podcast tonight as we go through it ll.

We'll also take any calls you have. You just need to follow these four steps:

1) Call (724) 444-7444

2) Enter the Call ID 68618 and press # afterward

3) When asked for your PIN, press 1#

4) Talk to us!

Call on in and share your thoughts and questions. If you can't call in, use this thread to share any thoughts or questions and we'll work them in as well. Watched the Humanitarian Bowl game (earlier today)

So glad our guys chose to come to DC instead. Yikes. That turf looked awful.

Meanwhile, Zona embarrassing the Pac-10.

Sorry to post football stuff on this thread but might well as use it as a semi-open thread.

Did you catch the part about ...

Chris Fowler teeing up the Leach story for Craig James? I am still conflicted by this story but ESPN’s coverage of this story has been sickening.

Yeah

I have no idea what actually happened so I can’t take a side, but if you’re going to tee James up then you need to provide Leach’s side.

Espn fail...

Exactly, don’t know which side is right, but so far the coverage is VERY one sided. Doubletnation.com has been a very interesting read. I feel for the Texas Tech fans.

One sided journalism is an epic fail.

Tuning into your podcast now

You guys can get me back into Ben Ball mode. :-) Still too jazzed about football.

I completely forgot about the podcast

I was so hyped about football and remembered about it this afternoon.

tomorrow's game is huge!!!

If we can somehow scrape a win tomorrow afternoon, I think it will really have some big implications for rest of the season.

I tagged up your podcast with tomorrow’s game.

Yeah

This weekend is a great barometer for this team. Are we a bottom 3 team or top half team?

Meanwhile

Arizona didn’t bother to show up in San Diego. Man … this is just ugly. Total of 32 yards in 23 plays.

What did Craig James actually say during the broadcast?

I was watching the game with Bob Dylan overdubbed, so I’d be curious as to how immodest his comments were.

Craig who?

There used to be someone named Craig James who took money to play college ball and got his program killed. But as far as I am concerned, there is no Craig James. Everyone wants his child to succeed, but to use your bully pulpit to get a coach fired because in the final analysis you disagreed with the playing time your son was getting is just wrong. But, like OJ, the late Craig James will get away with this. This whole rigamarole will be forgotten. Craig Junior will learn a valuable life lesson, and that is that if you’re the son of a former pro football player and a current blowhard, er, announcer on espn (can no longer capitalize that group), you’re not answerable for anything. Craig Junior just learned that he’s entitled to whatever he wants.

Anyway, there is no Craig James as far as I am concerned, and there is no espn.

I'd like to offer my take on this

For starters, while I don’t think Craig James’ time at SMU should have anything to do with this current situation, Craig has never been linked to any illegal activity or extra benefits as an SMU student. In fact, he committed to SMU before it was “cool” to go there, as he arrived just on the cusp of our early 80s hay day. Supposedly he made his decision to go SMU because his girlfriend was going there. Obviously though, other players on his team were receiving extra benefits and payments from a slush fund, I’d just like to point out that he was never found guilty of this.

Secondly, while there may have been a way to handle this more privately, to my knowledge, Craig did not make any on air comments about this until after it was announced that Leach was put on probation, and that it was reported by espn that Adam (Craig Junior) was linked to the situation. I don’t see any way Craig could have avoided being interviewed, being that he is WWL color commentator, and ironically, was scheduled to cover the Michigan St.-Texas Tech Game.

Regarding Adam (Craig Junior) James, I’ve heard enough to believe that he is a prima donna, and that he feels entitled to more than he has worked for. But regardless of his character and work ethic, I don’t believe Leach’s decision to throw him in an electrical closet because he wouldn’t practice was appropriate either. Therefore, I’m not sure I can blame Craig for bringing this forth to the university, I imagine many father’s concerned about a son that recently suffered a concussion would do the same.

My opinion is that this is really more about the school’s frustration with Leach after last year’s contract negotiations, and were looking for an excuse to throw him out without pay. I believe the school has turned what would normally be a fixable situation, into a reason to fire Leach, because the school was already fed up with Leach’s insubordinate behavior and frankly his ego.

I just don’t agree with the personal attack of Craig James in regards to this matter, and think the focus should be more on his son’s behavior, Leach’s behavior, and the school’s behavior, and thats the only reason I decided to write up this long winded post. As you may know, I’m an SMU student, and felt obligated to defend a fellow Pony. : )

Details of James's treatment as stated by tWWL may not be completely accurate

We can’t be sure of exactly what the circumstances surrounding James Jr’s treatment were, or the appropriateness of whatever did happen. It does seem that tWWL/Tech’s characterization of the room as an electrical closet is not entirely accurate; Dennis Dodd at CBS sports cites sources claiming that one of the rooms at issue is the visiting team’s media room @ the stadium, while players have stated that the other room was commonly used by Leach’s players to get out of the Lubbock heat.

I don’t blame the James family bringing the treatment of Adam’s concussion to the AD and university’s attention, as it is true that head injuries are too often ignored by coaching staffs, or not treated properly in the days after the injury. Leach may be one of those coaches that needs to rethink his approach to such issues, but unless something big is missing from the picture, not worhty of termination. I have to lean toward the university wanting a pretext to fire him, and this provided the perfect opportunity.

Also, I agree that the SMU bashing is a bit much. The program’s history and the senior James’s time there does open the door to some people, but it is not necessary. To be fair, it could be my Great-Granddad involvement with the university back in the day that has me thinking that way.

agreed, there are a lot of conflicting opinions,

as evidenced by the players themselves. While former players such as Graham Harrell have come out in support of Leach, we’ve also seen current players that feel Leach was out of line in this situation and are almost happy to see him go. I’m not claiming that I know the whole story, but in regards to the description of the room, have you seen this?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZqvajnhZDU

Anyway, the intent of my post though was to address the personal attack on Craig James that was backed by a few false claims, not to say whether Adam had or hadn’t been fairly treated, because frankly, I dont really know.

Listen to non espn sources

They cover both sides, amazing how espn is so one sided. You would think the kid was beaten in the shed.
