Center Court: Ben Ball (Kansas) Open Thread
Kansas Jayhawks at UCLA Bruins, Dec 6, 2009 2:30 PM PST
So here we go. In about an hour Bruins will face off against number 1 Kansas Jayhawks. At this point we are wondering whether this year's Bruins can even keep this afternoon interestng and for that to happen they are going to need a huge assist from the Den and the entire Pauley early in the game.
If you want to read up our notes on Kansas and various posts that have gone up last few days sounding off on both the short term and long term outlook on UCLA hoops, you can do so by going here. The game will be broadcast on FSN/PT with Steve Physioc (play-by-play), Marques Johnson (analyst) and Michael Eaves (sideline). Probably the day to turn down your volume because none of those three are worth listening to (yeah, even Marques Johnson, who is essentially the David Norrie of college basketball broadcasters).
Anyway, tip off is scheduled for 2:37 pm PST. It will broadcast live on FSN/PT. You can also follow the game via official game tracker over here. For those who are following the game along this open thread, as always please free to share updates and scores so that other BNers across the nation who might not be fortunate enough to get live broadcast can follow along the fun.
So let's get this party started. Fire away.
GO BRUINS.

Leaving for Pauley now
I’ll be there in full voice and hopefully the rest of Pauley is too. We realllllly need it, but my lack of confidence in our team right is surpassed only by the lack of confidence I have in our crowds.

A test of heart
A win is very unlikely, but if the young guys can stay in there and not get blown out, it could be a stepping stone for the Pac-10.

maybe the football team won’t be hearing people calling us a “Basketball School” for a while.

Painful to hear
I hope it doesn’t look that bad on TV. That’s about the last thing the program needs now is the appearance the fans have deserted.

Yesterday threads were legendary for the variety and insanity of their content.
Here’s to today’s threads being legendary for the turnaround and performance by our basketball team.

We had better have such a turnaround...
Unless anyone has a flash video of bouncing Jayhawks to share.

The Jayhawk fans are MUCH louder right niw
A loud cheer for them going off the court, barely an applause for our guys.

At least it'll be easier to coordinate the excuses.
Can’t blame it on how difficult it is to make it to Pauley.
greg in denver - UCLA guy for life
Gonna throw out the typical excuse
That this past week was tenth (dead) week, and finals are at hand. Still no excuse really for not showing up to see us play KANSAS.
by inhowlandwetrust on Dec 6, 2009 2:28 PM PST via mobile reply actions
I remember 1995
Ty Edney’s 4.8 also happened between dead and final weeks. The entire Landfair and surrounding apts were glued to the TV set. Can’t be healthy to study 24/7. No excuse for not taking a couple hour break to support UCLA, especially when you’re within walking distance to Pauley
Me too
two on Monday and two on Tues. And road trip to Oakland on Wed. What a life!!!
What do you guys remember today
Those finals, or Tyus in 4.8?
And yet, I’ll bet you two still didn’t end up destitute and on the street for watching that game.

I also remember
Ed O’Bannon’s last game at Pauley when Harrick took him out with about five minutes to play. He went to center court and kissed to logo. Entire Pauley went nuts!!!

When the team came out of the tunnel 4 minutes before tip, 3 weren’t even filled.

We have gotten pretty good looks on offense so far
Shots just aren’t falling.
Bad D

Can we play with them?
Was about to say yes we can. Now not sure. Unbelievable assists by K. UCLA can’t hit shots.
I don’t understand what CBH is doing. He ha always been quick w/ a TO but he leaves that guy in for all that? Is he trying to prove a point?
If Bochy coached the Warriors Bengie Molina would start every game at PG.
Yes, they will
and we’ll have to remind them, again, that CBH knows the score. He’s not just making this stuff up.
greg in denver - UCLA guy for life
Agree
Bobo is done for this game. He’s blown his chances
Damn
I’m used to seeing this kind of D in Pauley, but not facing it.
greg in denver - UCLA guy for life
To be fair
the 3s he has taken this game, I thought were decent shots. He just isn’t knocking them down.
Did I hear
it correctly. MR is shooting less than 20% from 3s?
No matter, I heard Bobo is transferring to Kansas next week anyway.. I read it here on BN from a reliable first-time poster who heard it first hand from the players.

football sidenote
to all of those who will be in the bay area over the winter holidays, $c just accepted an Emerald Bowl bid. Eww.
Yeah, that's tough
Remember JR Henderson’s FT against Kentucky at the Wooden Classic his freshman year? Not his first game but he was cool and calm. Ok…I need to stop re-living the 94-95 season
Bobo is not where we need him
but I think we will need him in order to get back to where we want to be.
It’s tough, do we sacrifice on the court now for hopeful growth down the line?
greg in denver - UCLA guy for life
Not a lot of choices
He will either step up or out.
He’s not been much worse than JA. We are letting JA play into his game and will do the same, to some extent with Bobo
sjh
TH looks healthy -- now just has to get some practice and game time
can’t expect too much from a guy who practiced 1 week
sjh
is it really that low?
Maybe Kapono can give him a call.
because he can't create his own shots
he’s a good bench player not #1/#2 option
Or he needs us to have a strong inside game
to get left alone on the arc.
greg in denver - UCLA guy for life
Marques Johnson
said earlier it’s less than 20%
Here's a stat that we should all be concerned about
12 turnovers, still over 5 minutes left in 1st half
"I don't forget very much" Rick Neuheisel, 11/28/09
Maybe I'm imagining it
But it looks a little more like ben ball today. More hustle on offense today? Picks seem crisper.
I would like to see
the freshmen more instead of ND
RN freshman mistake
Shouldn’t bring the ball down low in the post. Keep it high. Dean Smith used to teach that.
Formerly UCLA Class of 86
Note to big men
do not bring the ball down low. All those little guys can reach it.

Regardless of the outcome
The key to this game is building confidence for the rest of the season and putting the last few weeks behind us.
What about goaltend there?

I think its cause we're surprised to be getting it in close.
With a little more experience and cool headedness (if that’s a word) our guys will be making those layins and dunking it with regularity. I think we’ve found some chemistry now.

Good Job, Bruins!!
If they increase their shooting percentage, (which they WILL), they are totally in this game.
Love My Bruins
The shooting percentages will probably even out.
Combine that with the same D effort we were playing with at the end of half and less unforced turnovers and anything could happen.
Just tuned in the the last few minutes before the half
Overall, I think we’re doing better than expected. Out players do need to work on slowing the tempo a little bit more, but it does feel like they’re doing a lot better than expected. Maybe Drew Gordon was the cause of the lost we had this season.
isn't there a stat in the NBA
for how a team performs when specific players are in the lineup? If so, I’d like to see the Bobo number for this game
stop bagging on him

Maybe he wanted to sever ties with fellow mohawk man, Gordon. As sloppy as all our turnovers were, I feel some team chemistry brewing on the floor, and feel like there should be some positives in the locker room. Kansas really wimped out in the closing seconds of the half.

Reeves Nelson
I shudder thinking about the fact that his father had to go onto some Bruin recruiting forums and defend his son’s ability to play at UCLA.
I think because
he wanted to play footbal and then got hurt. They questioned his desire to play BB, wasn’t it? I know his ranking dropped alot after he got hurt in football
Some of it was the football thing
but if my memory serves me correct there was some concern about how his body was developing too? He seemed undersized for a power forward at the time… now, not so much.

Keefe
I think we can officially say in his senior season he hasn’t lived up to his McDonald All American hype.
Really sad
His grandparents live in the house behind us. My brother and I would always play basketball on our trampoline, yelling out the names of the Bruins we were impersonating. We saw them at church one day and they asked us why they never heard us screaming James name… we didn’t really have the heart to tell them, and always managed to carefully fit him in after that.
A shame really -- he flourished next to KL, seemed like a solid MAdsen-type.
Now, RN is the new Mad Dog.

Well worth it
I had a double double last night after picking up the dog from the dog catcher. The kid had to get one a few months ago as payment for her friend picking her up at the airport in San Antonio. The to prepare them to go for longer travel, though to Korea? That’s a long flight(been there done that), and sort of surprised it got through customs.

For this season? For the future? Like most here, I’d be happy to see the kids play, get some experience, and make mistakes.

Yep
I said that earier. Completely agree with you, They need game experience
Unfair
We should put the best team out there, whatever that is. No way you should start thinking about ‘building for next season’ before we’ve played our first Pac-10 game.
I’m also unconvinced that it’s better for people to get big minutes in losing performances vs reduced minutes in games that are competitive.
And it’s not fair on seniors who have given big efforts over the previous 3 years to abandon their senior season and also deny them playing time.
If the frosh and sophs want bigger minutes, let them work their tails off in practice to earn them, don’t just have them handed to them.
Fair point about our best team
but I think our best team IS the kids
greg in denver - UCLA guy for life
in which case
it’s fine to play them; but playing them just because they’re the future is a great way to demoralize the seniors and make the youngsters feel a sense of entitlement.
UCLA miss, TH misses pretty leaner putback, ML putback!

Remember, we lost to UP by 27

They played some early
And got lucky that Kansas missed some WIDE open 3s.

We have nobody in there now who can handle Aldrich
It was a good test for RN though
Formerly UCLA Class of 86
Just having to defend v Aldrich with a minute left says something.
Three hours ago most of you were talking about a blow out. Would coach Self have the dignity not to pile it on. So now we lose to #1 by 12, score last 5 pts of the game, battle our hearts out, show lots and lots of positive, and most of what I’m reading is complaints and disappointments. Sorry, I applauded my Bruins after this one. And we can play with the best in the Pac 10 and we can get a tourney bid.

not the seniors though
hopefully through the season they will be coming off the bench
IMHO
Putting him back on the floor was ill-advised, and besides, it made us evolve into desperation. We should NEVER play desperate at Pauley.
Love My Bruins
looked like
the other players didn’t really want to give him the ball, which cuts down your options…
Better than I thought it would be
but still very far from where we need to be. A decent step today against a very talented team.
greg in denver - UCLA guy for life
thanks again for the sort of play by play. latter
rn and a few other seem to be AOK. Just need time to get it together
Hey, we didn't lose by 30
and had RN stayed in, who knows. I think it would have been much closer in the end.
ND needs to be riding the bench. I’ll take JK any day on D over ND.
All in all, I am pleased.
Bruins lost but...
the team chemistry just feels better…
Go UCLA!
Coach Howland
will certainly build on this progress. Loved the gutsy play they kept up until RN was “eyed.”
Love My Bruins
Not disappointed with this game at all
First game after the drama with Gordon
First game for Honeycutt
Playing against #1 Kansas
man I honestly thought were going to completely embarrassed, but what I saw wasn’t embarrassing at all.
Honeycutt, Reeves, Lane all contributing
Reeves is the heart and soul of this team, no question.
He was DOMINATING Cole Aldrich out there and clearly the game was different after he got hurt.
I am VERY impressed with Ben Howland (how he can be any more impressive after his last few years is a mystery) for keeping this team focused amidst all the drama and tough games.
I will be watching every game going forward and expecting solid chemistry and improved play.
Now they need to go WORK ON THEIR SHOOTING!!!
Better than I thought
We came up right along the line, but we just need some shooters. The looks were there, just need some shooters

Actually got to watch the game
Reeves is a warrior, quickly becoming my favorite bruin…seeing TH out there was awesome, Nikola made me sick to my stomach a few times, but I’m learning to live with it…after tonight, my outlook for the season may be a tad less grim…these youngsters have some fight, just very very raw.
William Doolittle at your service, a.k.a. will do.
I'm Seriously Encouraged
Sorry the final score didn’t reflect the overall Bruin warrior mentality that kept them for the most part in single digits throughout the game. I loved that RN clawed to get back in the game. Chemistry is already better “sans Gordon,” and I feel like Pac-10 play could be really tight this year. When you think that the Bruins “held their own” despite all the turnovers, etc. against what is right now the #1 team in the country, they can hold their heads high, and I think the next few tough games look a “little less” tougher. GO BRUINS!!
Great Performance
Considering everything, and in light of the expectations, this was a victory of sorts. Don’t know what the final turnover count was but I know that most of them were in the first 10 minutes. Team played its heart out to the final buzzer. With a few more made FTs and one or two threes (MR’s in and outer for one) we come close to giving #1 a scare. My prediction is that after a six day rest (well more like six days to practice) and with RN hopfully OK, we will win against Miss St. and N. Mex. Throw out the first six games. They are meaningless now. Focus on these kids gaining their confidence, chemistry and (hopefully) shooting touch.
