Center Court: Ben Ball (Kansas) Open Thread

Kansas Jayhawks at UCLA Bruins, Dec 6, 2009 2:30 PM PST

So here we go. In about an hour Bruins will face off against number 1 Kansas Jayhawks. At this point we are wondering whether this year's Bruins can even keep this afternoon interestng and for that to happen they are going to need a huge assist from the Den and the entire Pauley early in the game.

If you want to read up our notes on Kansas and various posts that have gone up last few days sounding off on both the short term and long term outlook on UCLA hoops, you can do so by going here. The game will be broadcast on FSN/PT with Steve Physioc (play-by-play), Marques Johnson (analyst) and Michael Eaves (sideline). Probably the day to turn down your volume because none of those three are worth listening to (yeah, even Marques Johnson, who is essentially the David Norrie of college basketball broadcasters).

Anyway, tip off is scheduled for 2:37 pm PST. It will broadcast live on FSN/PT. You can also follow the game via official game tracker over here. For those who are following the game along this open thread, as always please free to share updates and scores so that other BNers across the nation who might not be fortunate enough to get live broadcast can follow along the fun.

So let's get this party started. Fire away.

GO BRUINS.

Leaving for Pauley now

I’ll be there in full voice and hopefully the rest of Pauley is too. We realllllly need it, but my lack of confidence in our team right is surpassed only by the lack of confidence I have in our crowds.

A test of heart

A win is very unlikely, but if the young guys can stay in there and not get blown out, it could be a stepping stone for the Pac-10.

Gonna throw out the typical excuse

I remember 1995

Ty Edney’s 4.8 also happened between dead and final weeks. The entire Landfair and surrounding apts were glued to the TV set. Can’t be healthy to study 24/7. No excuse for not taking a couple hour break to support UCLA, especially when you’re within walking distance to Pauley

Keefe

I think we can officially say in his senior season he hasn’t lived up to his McDonald All American hype.

by Nestor on Dec 6, 2009 4:14 PM PST reply actions

Really sad

His grandparents live in the house behind us. My brother and I would always play basketball on our trampoline, yelling out the names of the Bruins we were impersonating. We saw them at church one day and they asked us why they never heard us screaming James name… we didn’t really have the heart to tell them, and always managed to carefully fit him in after that.

Unfair

We should put the best team out there, whatever that is. No way you should start thinking about ‘building for next season’ before we’ve played our first Pac-10 game.

I’m also unconvinced that it’s better for people to get big minutes in losing performances vs reduced minutes in games that are competitive.

And it’s not fair on seniors who have given big efforts over the previous 3 years to abandon their senior season and also deny them playing time.

If the frosh and sophs want bigger minutes, let them work their tails off in practice to earn them, don’t just have them handed to them.

Just having to defend v Aldrich with a minute left says something.

Three hours ago most of you were talking about a blow out. Would coach Self have the dignity not to pile it on. So now we lose to #1 by 12, score last 5 pts of the game, battle our hearts out, show lots and lots of positive, and most of what I’m reading is complaints and disappointments. Sorry, I applauded my Bruins after this one. And we can play with the best in the Pac 10 and we can get a tourney bid.

Not disappointed with this game at all

First game after the drama with Gordon
First game for Honeycutt
Playing against #1 Kansas

man I honestly thought were going to completely embarrassed, but what I saw wasn’t embarrassing at all.

Honeycutt, Reeves, Lane all contributing

Reeves is the heart and soul of this team, no question.
He was DOMINATING Cole Aldrich out there and clearly the game was different after he got hurt.

I am VERY impressed with Ben Howland (how he can be any more impressive after his last few years is a mystery) for keeping this team focused amidst all the drama and tough games.

I will be watching every game going forward and expecting solid chemistry and improved play.

Now they need to go WORK ON THEIR SHOOTING!!!

I'm Seriously Encouraged

Sorry the final score didn’t reflect the overall Bruin warrior mentality that kept them for the most part in single digits throughout the game. I loved that RN clawed to get back in the game. Chemistry is already better “sans Gordon,” and I feel like Pac-10 play could be really tight this year. When you think that the Bruins “held their own” despite all the turnovers, etc. against what is right now the #1 team in the country, they can hold their heads high, and I think the next few tough games look a “little less” tougher. GO BRUINS!!

by bruinmom on Dec 6, 2009 4:50 PM PST reply actions

Great Performance

Considering everything, and in light of the expectations, this was a victory of sorts. Don’t know what the final turnover count was but I know that most of them were in the first 10 minutes. Team played its heart out to the final buzzer. With a few more made FTs and one or two threes (MR’s in and outer for one) we come close to giving #1 a scare. My prediction is that after a six day rest (well more like six days to practice) and with RN hopfully OK, we will win against Miss St. and N. Mex. Throw out the first six games. They are meaningless now. Focus on these kids gaining their confidence, chemistry and (hopefully) shooting touch.
