Hello Bruins faithful, I am headed to your historic stadium...
...and would like some tips about the area. I will be staying in Monterey Park. I am flying in on the sixth(Wed) and back out on the 9th(Sat). Will be getting in late on the sixth but will be in Pasadena all of the seventh. Will have a free day on the eighth. Suggestions for good eateries under $25 per person range, budgeting $300/per person for food, etc. Also, any suggestions for LA area things to see on that Friday. Have been to Cali once before but that was the San Fran area. Where do you recommend parking for the game? Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.
ROLL TIDE and Go Bruins!

Hope you like
Asian food. Monterey Park has some of the best dim sum around. It’s fairly cheap and doesn’t cost $25pp. Not sure what hotel you’re staying at but I think there are only two decent ones. One is Lincoln hotel and the other is Hilton on Valley Blvd (San Gabriel). If you stay at Hilton, there are tons of places to eat there. MP, in case you don’t know, is a pedominately Asian community. Be sure to learn some Cantonese before you get there:)
Old town Pasadena is a good hang out place before or after the game. I guess you could go see the floats on Friday. Huntington Library is a beautiful garden to visit if that’s your interest. Hollywood’s walk of fame…Santa Monica’s Pier and Third St…Venice Beach…Beverly Hills…of course, Westwood, home of the BRUINS!!! Too many to list depends on what your interests are.
Enjoy LA and the game!
Love Asian food
As for my hotel, it is the Best Western Markland. I set myself a $1000 total budget for flight/hotel/rental car/food. It is rated as a 3 star and I am not too picky about where I lay me head. If it is clean, comfortable and in a decent area, I am good. Also, as I waited until there were 8 minutes to go in the game yesterday to book the flight/hotel, I was a bit limited in choices. I will be spending very little time(mostly just sleep) in the area round my hotel, so maybe I won’t need to learn Cantonese. As a southerner, mostly we only need English(southern English, mind you) and some Spanish.

May I Just Say,
Congratulations, and I just love your post because your excitement and enthusiasm just bursts from it.
(Alas, I have been away from the LA area for so long, I’m afraid any recommendation I would make regarding food or parking would be somewhat useless.)
I assure you, the local and non-geezer BN’ers will give you plenty to go on. I hope you have a good time enjoying the roses. Again, congratulations!
Love My Bruins
Thx for the congrats
I am hoping we duplicate our previous success inside your stadium(waaaayyy, before I was born). Many non-Alabama fans do not know this but our Fight Song includes your stadium. The line proceeding it and the line in question follows-
“Fight on, fight on, fight on men.
Remember the Rose Bowl, we’ll win then.”

Calling all Bruins
We can help this Tide fan out.
The Huntington Library in San Marino (Pasadena area) is excellent. Wonderful gardens and excellent art (check out the website). I highly recommend the free tours there. Discounted tickets and less crowded on weekdays, plus free parking.
You can (literally) park right on the golf course next to the Rose Bowl. It will take you forever to get out of there after the game but there is nothing better than tailgating on the soft grass at the Rose Bowl, as you are surrounded by mountains and hills.
It’s a little rough around the edges (i.e., “historic”) but Phillipe’s in downtown near Union Station makes excellent dip sandwiches (beef, lamb, etc.) at very reasonable prices. Plus, the restaurant itself is historic. You won’t want to walk around the neighborhood, though.
Another heart attack eatery with a few locations is The Hat and there is one near Monterey Park. Again, outstanding dip sandwiches and gravy fries galore.
Definitely recommend Pasadena, too. Tons of restaurants and bars of all types and shops. Good people-watching and should be high-energy and filled with fans of both teams.
Have a great time. Roll Tide!
French Dip
Philippe’s is said to have invented the French Dip sandwich so definitely a historical site for food.
Philippe's is a great place
It’s not particulary convenient when your headquarters is Monterrey Park and your target area is Pasadena. Philippes is close to Olvera Street and Dodger Stadium, but not to the Rose Bowl. That said, I would still go there if time allows. Also, another iconic eatery is the original Tommy’s at Beverly & Rampart. That’s an acquired taste, but one that’s easy to acquire.
Spanish food in Pasadena? There are about a zillion choices. I like a little place on Allen quite a bit north of Lake called Mijares (assuming it’s still there.) El Torito on Allen (?) just north of Foothill is good. (Both of these choices are circa four years ago.)
Re Huntington Library, last time I was there, there was an original Gainsborough, either “Pinkie” or “Blue Boy,” and the original Gilbert Stuart portrait of Washington that is on the dollar bill.
French Dip
Another excellent place for French Dip is Cole’s in downtown. It is a 100 year old institution and has a friendly rivalry with Phillipe’s going about which place actually invented the sandwich.
The place itself has been renovated and has a real throwback feel to it, leather, wood, etc.
I would only caution everyone that it is located literally on the border of skid row and you will likely cross some interesting characters if you go there. But the food is excellent and the cocktails are extremely well made. Well worth a visit but I wouldn’t take small kids to that area.
Thank you for the info
The Huntington Library sounds like a must see for me. While I am out there I would like to eat at the “Place”. To explain, throughout the south, there are certain places that are landmark eateries that are synonymous with the university they are affiliated with. For Alabama, there is Dreamland Ribs, for GaTech there is The Varsity, etc. What would you most consider to be the UCLA “Joint”.

Parking tip
Esp if tailgating, save something to tailgate with AFTER the game. Hang out for an hour or so before actually leaving. The parking is significantly less aggravating.
Go Bruins!
Sounds much like gameday in Tuscaloosa
I fortunately have found the perfect sopt in recent years. I am a BAMA season ticket holder. I have found a lot, that provides 24 Hr lighting and a live presence with indoor restrooms and a climate controlled conference room with seating and a projection TV. The ingress and egress is the best on campus. The down side is for the lazy, it is about a 12 block walk from Bryant-Denny stadium. Well worth the walk for me. I probably will be tailgating with a group of BAMA fans from one of the two sites I frequent.

Nick2002
Parking at the Rose Bowl is fairly unique. They turn the golf course adjacent to the stadium into a parking lot. Pretty nice for tailgating (basically a giant park with ponds and lot’s of trees), but not a lot of light, and it’s easy to lose your car.
Major thumbs up on Philippe's
Personally, I recommend ordering the lamb with swiss, and double-dipped, with the slaw and the hot mustard on the side. Outstanding sandwich for less than $5.
Actually, ANY sandwich should be ordered at Philippe’s. They don’t give the au jus on the side, so the only way to get it moist enough to take home and have for leftovers is to go double-dipped.

Philipps's
Double dip is the only way to get it, the mustard there is special. Myself, I get the beef with jack; to each his own. They do sell jars of the mustard at the door. :)
Pig's Feet
Seriously, if you’re going to Phillippe’s get the pickled pig’s feet and the pickled egg. Both are unique and both are well worth it.
As far as bars go, if you want a good German ‘oktoberfest’ atmosphere go to the Red Lion in Silver Lake (Glendale blvd) off the 5 freeway. I believe if you’re coming due south on the 5 from Pasadena to Monetary Park you should hit it easy. You can get huge steins of beer for cheap, not to mention brats and saurkraut. Plus, Silver Lake is a damned cool area.
Victory or until next year!
As a person of German descent...
…I can get with that.
Auburn and Tennessee fans are a lot like Slinkys...neither are worth much but you do get a sense of satisfaction from pushing them down a flight of stairs
If you make it over to west Los Angeles...
You could always visit UCLA! And if you happened to find yourself near the beach in Santa Monica for under $10 you can get one of the best sandwiches in the world @ Bay Cities Italian Deli. I would suggest the “Godmother” with “the works”. Enjoy your trip!
Thanks for the tip
I love Italian food. Especially a good lasagna(call it the Garfield in me, heh). The sandwich sounds like a winner. I will be free on that Friday and will try and tour the UCLA campus. Gotta see if your “hotties” match up with our Tuscaloosa “lasses”.
Auburn and Tennessee fans are a lot like Slinkys...neither are worth much but you do get a sense of satisfaction from pushing them down a flight of stairs
You can
spend a whole day touring Hollywood, Beverly Hills, UCLA, Santa Monica. They are pretty close to each other. Huntington Library will need at least half a day. Tough choices on limited time. I saw your hotel on the map. I’d recommend you get a GPS because you don’t want to get lost, especially late at night. You’re close to East LA. Not exactly the safest area. Stay away from USC and southcentral, too.
I married a former UCLA coed, so I'm living the dream.
That being said, the ladies of the SEC are quite lovely. ;-)

El Cholo Restaurant
If you are looking for good Mexican Food and great Margaritas, you have to visit El Cholo in Santa Monica. Their tableside guacamole is great and their margaritas are the best! Be careful though…they’re deceptively strong!
El Cholo Restaurant in Pasadena also.
This is a good Mexican food restaurant but a little pricey and more gourmet than your average Mexican joint.

C&O's Trattoria
If you like Italian food and want a fun atmosphere, you definitely need to visit C&O’s Trattoria in Venice Beach. Its on Washington Blvd right at the Ocean. The prices are great, the portions are huge, and the garlic rolls are to die for. Also, every hour the waiters and waitresses pass out sheets with the words to “That’s Amore” and the whole restaurant sings the song as the servers come around and clink glasses of chianti. Very fun!
GREAT choice. That sandwich was featured on Food Network...
… on the show “The Best Thing I Ever Ate.” Well done!

Try to hit up
a In-N-Out while your out here. It’s a family owned burger chain that even Gordon Ramsay’s admits to love. Everything they have there is completely fresh and delicious!
It's not listed on the menu there
but if you’ve never been to an In’n’Out get everything “animal style”, even the fries!
I agree about double-dipping at Philippes, but I think you should wait for your second burger to go animal style
I forgot about In and Out Burgers. They are good, and their fries are the best I’ve had. (In and Out Burgers are similar to Steak ‘N Shake, but In and Out fries are a million times better.) I think regular is enough juice on the burger, myself. Do one each way and make up your own mind. (That’s two trips – one double-burger is filling enough.)
Double dip at Philippes is the only way to go.
Another burger joint I like in Pasadena is Wolfe’s, a little north of Colorado on the east side of Lake.
Yes, I have heard much about them
I live in a very rural area, work in a larger city. For quite awhile, I was unable to get local networks on my DirecTV. So for many years, I got my network channels from LA and NY.

I posted a location between Monterey and the Rose Bowl below.
If you end up taking streets back from the Rose Bowl to Monterey Park, it should be easy to find.

Double double is the best
Or you can custom order and make it 3×3 or 4×4 depends on how hungry you are
I take it that is 3 meat, 3 cheese
Auburn and Tennessee fans are a lot like Slinkys...neither are worth much but you do get a sense of satisfaction from pushing them down a flight of stairs
there's one
in pasadena on Foothill. There’s one right next to UCLA, too
I've found anything more than a 3x3
is sorta disgusting >_<. its just pure meat adn cheese, taking away the goodness of the burger itself. But if it floats your boat, go for it!
Yeah, I wanna visit your area, not die in it, heh
Auburn and Tennessee fans are a lot like Slinkys...neither are worth much but you do get a sense of satisfaction from pushing them down a flight of stairs
LOL
Well you will have access to the Ronald Regan UCLA Medical Center :D Best in the West
LOL!
Never actually tried it myself. I guess i won’t be anytime soon. lol
One more - Go way up Lake about as far as you can go and look for Everest Burgers
They have good fries, too, and a regular fries will feed a family of 8 easily. (Well, that’s an exaggeration, but not much of one.)
in westwood village (the area right around campus)
i still hold enzo’s near and dear to my heart. Best pizza and italian sandwiches you can get especially after late night trips to brew. co and maloneys. If you want to read reviews for yourself, check the link
Thanks to all of you for
all your info. I will check back here every so often leading up to my trip.

Pink's Hot Dog out in LA
Is a great place to eat, but lines can be long. I’ve waited almost 2 hours for a hotdog (but it was well worth the wait) Millennium Dog FTW!
And they only take cash.

Pinks.....oh what memories it brings back.
Cantor’s Deli on Fairfax in 1967 became a hip mecca second only to Pinks. That is, after 2 am.
In the 70's
It was Fatburger, after 2am. They had a stand at the asu game, I was tempted. However $9 for a burger?

An early welcome to you bamachine...
bamchine — Congrats, and an early welcome to SoCal.
If you’re staying in Monterey Park, you’ll be cutting right through Alhambra and South Pasadena (if you take the streets) to go to the Rose Bowl. I’ve been living in that area for years, so here are some worthwhile places:
Pasadena/ Alhambra/ Monterey Park area:
(1) Alondra Hot Wings — east of the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Main St, in Alhambra. Great, sports-friendly place without an overly sports-bar feel. NY Mafia theme, mom and pop kinda place (only 4 locations in the entire LA-based chain) Great wings, great fresh made pizzas, wide array of fried appetizers. Ger the mozzarella cheese balls — cheese wrapped in sweet pizza dough, deep-fried and tossed in garlic butter, served with fresh marinara. Top the meal off with fried twinkies — I’m serious.
(2) 38 degrees/ Charlies Trio — These 2 places are situated on opposite corners of Main and First St in Alhambra, are owned by the same family. 38 is a new microbrew pub with good upscale bar food. Charlie’s is a great Italian place for the family.
(3) Hop Woo — Garfield and Main in Alhambra — Monterey Park has awesome Chinese food, but Woo is very good and easier to get to. It’s also right across the street from a large multiplex area. Order the walnut shrimp with special sauce — variations of it are found all thruout LA< and theirs is just as good as anyone’s outside of yang Chow’s in Chinatown.
(4) In-N-Out — Atlantic and Huntington, Alhambra — ALWAYS a long drive-thru line, thanks to the local high schools. Still, it’s an institution. Order the fries extra-well.
(5) Gus’ BBQ — Fair Oaks Avenue, 1.0-1.5 miles north of Huntington, in South Pasadena — on your way up to or back from the Rose Bowl. Recently renovated about 2 years ago. Great St. Louis/ Kansas City-style BBQ, but stay away from the greens. They serve them too al dente and not with nearly enough fat to even out the flavor. Good pulled pork, though.
(6) Wild Thyme — across the street from Gus’. Good mini-bistro/ cafe food. The crab cakes with the mango salsa are surprisingly filling
(7) Cheesecake Factory — Colorado and Fair Oaks, South Pasadena. Yeah. it’s a chain, and you probably have one or two in your area already, but everybody gets a slice of one of 30 different kinds of cheesecakes there, at 800 to 1200 calories a slice (no kidding). A LARGE menu for lunch and dinner. Good casual kind of place. If you’;ve never been to one, order the chicken marsala and thank us later. :)
(8) Parkway Grill — Green and Fair Oaks — South Pasadena — Good little bar/ steakhouse kind of place.
(9) Ernie Jr.’s — Colorado Blvd. at the 2 Freeway, a bit west of the Rose Bowl — family-style Mexican food place. Nothing flashy, nothing pretentious, decor like a diner in Pulp Fiction — but authentic Mexican comfort food that locals have been eating at for years. (My wife insisted I mention this one.)
(10) Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles — Lake Avenue, Pasadena, a few miles east of the Bowl. about 1-2 miles north of the 210 Freeway. This chain IS a SoCal institution. Piping hot fried chicken, sweet cinnamon-y waffles, greens done right, and mac and cheese my kids love.
I’ll pipe in with UCLA/ West LA locations later.

"In this program your passion bucket must be full to play SC." -- CRN, to Dan Patrick, 1/2008
hop woo is great-the peking duck is quite good
how about Papa Cristo’s, I think thats the best greek food in LA. Philippe’s is obviously fantastic as well.
William Doolittle at your service, a.k.a. will do.
(9) Ernie Jr's and (10) Roscoe's
(9) Is this the Ernie Jr’s Taco House on the south side of Colorado? I thought it was out of business? If that’s back in business, I may fly out for their enchiladas. (Anecdote – I had dinner there in ’78, then moved to Kansas City. I returned in ’88 or so, and the manager looked at me and said, “Wait a minute – lawyer … UCLA …. welcome back.” I was very impressed.)
Please tell me that this is the real, authentic Ernies.
(10) Roscoes – I had the worst case of the runs in the history of mankind after my one and only foray to that place. That said, I know it’s a very popular joint, and maybe my case is the once-a-century anomaly.
(9) Yep, same one.
I can’t remember off the top of my head if it’s on the So. Side of Colorado or North side, but it’s diagonally across from the Eagle Rock Plaza. And yeah, I love ordering the beef enchiladas with red sauce every couple of months or so. Good comfort food.
(10) Strictly anomaly. Next time you’re out here, order the Country Boy (3 wings and a waffle) and get a side of greens to go with it for roughage purposes. I actually did that yesterday for lunch out of respect for my own burgeoning geezerness, but at least it tasted good.
M

Ernie Jr's
It’s on the north side of Colorado in Eagle Rock now. Next to the interchaqnge of the 2 and 134. Fox, they used to have 4 or 5 locations including the one in Pasadena, but closed all but the one in Eagle Rock. Still run by the same family.
That was a very comprehensive post
Thank you for that. I have actually heard a lot about Roscoe’s over the years. Think I might have to try that and Hop Woo’s(also have heard about it before).

Welcome to California bamachine and thanks for your gracious hospitality.....
If you are from Tuscaloosa you will know Randall Publishing with the largest US flag flying in front — out on Rice Mine Road. I worked for Randall from 1999 to 2001 and while I was based in San Jose, CA., I made probably 20 trips to Tuscaloosa in that time. My memory fails me as to specific spots we used to visit but I remember a little coffee shop near campus that the Bear used to frequent — plenty of history there, pictures all over of BB, Namath, Snake and others. I worked with Terry Kilgore, who centered the ball for Snake. Also ate at Dreamland Ribs several times (fantastic and not like ribs in CA). So I want to take the opportunity to thank you for the wonderful memories I have from those years. Your people are truly gracious and down to earth. I hope you find LA the same, albeit alot larger. I also used to drive a cab in LA and could list a million hot spots, but its been too many years and probably too many changes. I’ll leave it up to my less geezer-like Bruin fans.
Glad you enjoyed your time in Tuscaloosa
I actually live about 100 miles from Tuscaloosa in a little town called Fort Payne. I have spent a ton of time in Tuscaloosa though for games(season ticket holder). Coming out of HS, UA only offered me a partial academic scholarship, so I ended up going to Jacksonville State University on a full ride. I met Bryant on several occasions(my brother played for him). Unfortunately, my football career ended in JV ball(had the knee tri-fecta, ACL,MCL, PCL). Hopefully, I bring back some great memories from the Pasadena/LA area.

I recommend Pink's Hot Dogs and Phillippe's French Dip
but you definitely have to check out the UCLA Hall of Fame Museum, there is a lot of athletic history in there.

If you're around downtown at night a trip up to the Griffith Observatory is free
and the view is awesome if it’s clear. I take a lot of out of towners up there and everyone seems to like it. If you’re driving out to the westside it will be on your way home at night. (there’s not much to the east so you’ll probably be close at least once.) Definitely worth an hour IMHO.
Find a taco truck at least once when you’re here! You won’t eat anything better for $6 (besides In N Out)!
Enjoy the tailgate on the grass at the Rose Bowl! It’s great!
Also Wurstkuche downtown is good cheap fun. Lots of great beer and sausages. I’ve been racking my brain trying to think of anywhere you have a fun night out, good food, good drinks for less than $30, within 15 minutes of Monterey Park, and that seemed like the best idea. There’s 700 reviews about the place on Yelp if you want to know more.
Food Options
In Monterey Park, I would head over to NBC Seafood for Dim Sum. Try to go right when it opens, so that there is a shorter line. I think they offer one of the more authentic Dim Sum experiences in the MP area. Another place is Elite Restaurant in Monterey Park, but I’ve never been there – NBC was my definite standby.
If you’re in Pasadena, try the Hat. Get the pastrami. I can’t remember what the heart attack on fries is right now, but it involves pastrami and cheese and many forks.
If you head near campus, in addition to some of the recommendations, also go to Diddy Riese! Many of us spent time in their line, waiting for a warm delicious 0.35 cookie or a 1.25 ice cream sandwich.
Sea Harbor in Rosemead
My Chinese colleague who lives up there says that while NBC is good for dim sum, Sea Harbor is better.
Phoenix Inn
at Valley also has good food, no dim sum though
Yet another suggestion
You can try going to the Getty Museum (pretty amazing museum with a spectacular view) during one of your days off. It is down the freeway from campus, allowing you to hit multiple birds with one stone (Visit UCLA, Diddy Riese, In-N-Out) ;D Just be prepared to encounter the dreaded 405 freeway (considered one of the most congested freeways in the nation). Also on the way/back to MP you will by all the other places that have been suggested such as Pinks, and Phillippes (depending on which route you decide on of course).
If you decide to stay in the Pasadena area, the Norton Simon Museum is a great place as well, housing a lot of famous pieces of art.
In-N-Out *and* Diddy Riese...
I’m drooling! Highly recommended, bamachine!
Back when I still lived in LA, wandering Venice Beach was always fun, even if it wasn’t summer. Locals could fill us in on whether it’s worth it or not by now.
formerly AZBruin
Diddy Riese
Are the cookies still a 25 cents? I’ve often wondered how they paid Westwood rents on a quarter a cookie. But it did make for the nice unwritten rule that any trip to the Village required bringing back 8 cookies for the dorm neighbors.
greg in denver - UCLA guy for life
not sure
i remember being a 3rd year or so in 2007 and everyone was shocked about the sandwiches being raised to $1.25. i didnt mind throwing in .25 more for some cookie goodness, and apparently nobody else minded either. i wonder if its more now.
Lucky Boy
It’s a personal favorite of mine that has become a pre game tradition of mine. They have the best breakfast burritos in the Pasadena area, if not the LA area. They serve them all day and is located pretty close to the Rose Bowl. Lucky Boy is located on Arroyo Pkwy just south of California Blvd.
You'll be staying in the middle of a large Chinese community
Don’t be surprised if you think you just arrived in China! LOL.
With that said, I think you should take advantage of the authentic Chinese food in the area. You’ll be blown away with the variety and the taste. You won’t find that in Alabama for sure. You also won’t find better Mexican food in Alabama either.
There are other Asian communities in LA with great food: Little Tokyo, Koreatown, Little Saigon, etc. If you choose to come to visit the beautiful UCLA campus, you can swing by Sawtelle (North of the Sawtelle Blvd. and Olympic Blvd. intersection) for some of the best Japanese food in LA.
Back to the Mexican food, there is a Mexican community in El Monte near Monterey Park. You can go into any one of the small restaurants there and have a feast.
Enjoy!
One more
If you have time, try the Farmer’s Market at 3rd and Fairfax. Lots of good food there, as I recall.
Congratulations and welcome to SoCal!!
I will be hosting three Bama fans (two from T-town and one from VA). The latter is my old neighbor who moved back to VA last year. I had the pleasure of going to last year’s Ole Miss v Bama game and had one of the best sporting experiences in my life!! I adopted the Tide as my SEC team.
As for your location, there isn’t much to do in Monterey Park. I am partial to my city of Pasadena. Old Town Pasadena has plenty of great restaurants, bars and shops. I must warn you though. Last time Texas came to Pasadena for a National Championship game, they were deep and loud!
If you’re interested in hanging out with some Bama people, or just need some tips on what to do in the San Gabriel Valley, send me an email.
Once again, congratulations and welcome to Los Angeles!
Roll Tide and Go Bruins!!

I have a lot of respect for the Horn fans...
…that said, we too are deep and loud, heh. We also have went longer without a title than Texas. I expect our fans to bring it. From my understanding, the largest non Pac-10 fanbase in Cali are BAMA fans. Thanks for the offer. If I get hung up on what to do, where to go, will drop you a line.

This is one of the things I LOVE about this community...
… namely, as long as you (a) love college sports, and (b) don’t feel the need to badmouth UCLA or any other school (except U$C or your own rival) for no apparent reason, then shoot, pull up a virtual chair and hang with us.

I have found the whole SBN community...
…to be above what you find elsewhere. There are a lot less trolls and pre-teen smack on SBN as a whole. I have been a lurker on here for a couple of years, just joined up on RBR this season. I don’t think I will regret it. Prior to this, I only really posted on an invite only SEC board for the past 12 years.

OK, I am still headed out your way but some bad news
I was one of the 5400 BAMA season ticket holders to get shut out. The Rose Bowl committee only gave each school 19K tix. I am trying to get some reasonable priced tix, if I am really lucky I can get 2 of the 2K that are going on public sale next week. I will have to have a fast trigger finger to get them. If any of you guys come across any tix for under $500 apiece, hit me up at bamachine@gmail.com
Thanks again for any help.
