Bruins To The EagleBank Bowl With Army Loss
If Army loses to Navy next week, the Bruins will play in the EagleBank Bowl on December 29th vs. Temple. From Gold's blog:
I just ran up to Rick Neuheisel at the UCLA-Kansas game, and he confirmed: UCLA is officially headed to the EagleBank Bowl in Washington D.C. to play Temple, if Army loses to Navy next week.

Not totally surprising.
We knew it was one of four possibilities. I just thought that GMAC and Blue Turf bowls were more logical choices. Some had talked about the bowl in Detroit too.
Go Navy!!!
Phew! I Was Just Watching the Bowl Show on ESPN
And saw our chances for Humanitarian and GMAC gone…..worried it was over. But, GO NAVY!! Just sorry it’s 6 days away for a firm commit for our guys.
I think we got the EagleBank out of convenience
If Army wins, they’re contractually obligated to go go to the EagleBank Bowl so putting us in the EagleBank Bowl makes things easier for everyone. It’s either us or them, instead of putting us in the Humanitarian or GMAC, then if Army wins, having to move some other people around to get Army in the EagleBank and every other 7-5 team in somewhere.

What if
So what happens if Army beats Navy…..do we not get a bowl game then?
Nope
If Army wins, there are no spots for 6-6 at-large teams.

We are only BCS conference team without a conference tie to a bowl bid
Alamo gives us 7 next year right?
There will still be 6 Pac 10 Bowl Games next year
I read that the Poinsetta Bowl does not have a Pac 10 team next year. So adding the Alamo Bowl still gives the Pac 10 six teams.
The Commish has his work cut out for him . . .
TV contract. Bowl tie ins. Tough to undo years of Tom Hanson’s buffoonery.
The Alamo Bowl is def a step up, though
That’ll be a good game to slot in on the schedule, so you’ll have
Rose
Alamo
Holiday
We still desperately need some more New Year’s Day games.
Actually, I think Marshall is an "at large" team . . .
. . . at 6-6 and 6th place in C-USA, which only has 5 guaranteed tie ins. They are now locked into the Little Casaer’s Bowl while we have to sweat the Army Navy game.
The new Commish really needs to upgrade the Pac-10’s bowls. C-USA has 7 tie ins beginning next season. ACC and SEC have 9 and 10 respectively.
Marshall is an at-large...
But they just accepted a spot into the Pizza Bowl.
DC’s a better spot for UCLA fans anyway.
Yeah, but it's probably not unrealistic to say...
that very few Bruins would make the trip to Detroit.
Also true
Eaglebank is a better choice with location and payout; nevertheless, still a slap in the face.
Marshall is also
only like 350 miles from Detroit. The more I think about it, the more it makes sense.
What's good for our East Coast Bruins is Good with me
This gives all of them an easy chance to see us in a bowl game UNLESS their families are on the West Coast and they travel for the holidays.
I wanted Mobile. A great city. I would have gone for the game and for some BBQ.
sjh
I fly back on the 16th
Law school finals. (On a positive note, I will not be freezing my ass off at RFK.)
Oh, duuuude...
Um, can I borrow your car if I can make it out there? You know, since you won’t be there… (j/k)

I know, God bless Metro.
The summer I spent in DC was awesome… even if I did have to track down a witness or two in a freaking crack-infested project to investigate a murder.

Important distinction:
Rooting for Navy to win (which does imply Army losing). I don’t think one should really root against a service academy, so go Navy!

I was surprised 6-6 Marshall got a guaranteed spot ahead of us, but EagleBank is a bigger payout.
Don't know much about Temple
and the closest in common opponents I could find was this:
They lost to Ohio, which lost to Tennessee.
"I don't forget very much" Rick Neuheisel, 11/28/09
Al Golden was Interviewed for Our Head Coaching Vacancy
And last year Temple won, what, was it two games? So everybody here was pretty incredulous that he was even getting consideration. This year, Temple is 9-3 in the MAC and Al Golden is a finalist for National Coach of the Year. Clearly, he has got some chops.
There Strength appears to be their running game ...
behind a substantial O-line (averaging 6-5, 318). This will be Temple’s first appearance in a bowl game in 30 years, so they’re going to be pretty fired up. With Al Groh’s firing at UVA, Al Golden will likely be on their short list as his replacement.

Geez … posting while drinking wine is apparently not one of my strong points – my apologies.
I've been asking that question since the $UC* game.
Still don’t know the answer but I think it is moot for the next week because of finals. I believe we get 15 practice days so we should be able to squeeze most of them in between Sunday, December 13 and December 29, assuming Navy holds serve against Army.

Whew Indeed!!
Have been watching the bowl selection shows and haven’t seen us. Thought maybe we might get the Pappajohns Bowl or GMAC Bowl. Would have been cool to see us matched up against either Navy or Misery. But you know we’ll be rooting for Navy against Army and you have to like Navy’s chances.

I work at a military school
so we have a bit of an Army-Navy rivalry already. I’m retired navy, and now I have a little something extra. Go Bruins, Go Navy, Beat Army.
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C
Wow, this is good news
To put this in perspective, here are the payouts for the other bowls UCLA was in the running for:
Humanitarian Bowl: $750K
GMAC Bowl: $750K
PapaJohns.com Bowl: $300K
EagleBank: $1M
And also for reference, the Pac-10 payouts :
Poinsettia Bowl: $500K
Emerald Bowl: $700K
Las Vegas Bowl: $1M
In other words, from a $$’s perspective, the EagleBank bowl is as good as the Las Vegas Bowl, and better than where USC is going to (Emerald Bowl). Hehe.
There's Something to be said for a "Bird in Hand"
An Army victory over Navy wouldn’t be a complete shocker. That said, I like our chances.
to clarify...
Look at their schedules, their Ws & Ls… It would be a true 13-9esque moment if Army won.
Navy is a 14 point favorite
So, at least by that measure, an upset would not be that shocking.

I'd rather have a bird in hand, but sometimes...
… all the bird does is poop on you.
Side note: $C is going to the Emerald Bowl — and gets only a $750K payoff?!? How the heck can they expect to pay Matt Barkley’s rent and car expenses on just that?!?
GO NAVY!!!!!!

possibly good for recruiting
Last year we got Thigpen out of that area, I’m sure that there’s a lot more talent out there that would be exposed to us even more.
OMG!!!!'
Went to Temple for dental school after wrapping things up at UCLA… What a matchup, feel like flying out to DC now.
Regarding Temple, they were HORRIBLE for years. A bowl game for their football program is huge. Not sure how good they are, but they will play their hearts out. Hope our boys take this seriously if it happens.
Go Owls! :). Err gooooo Bruins!

geez
temple has come a long way from getting virtually kicked out of the big east because they stunk so bad to getting a bowl bid now. during the 4 years i was there they went a total of 7 -28….couldn’t even give tickets away for their games (literally….always had extra tickets available) but looks like they’ve turned it around quite a bit.
Drat
DC is almost exactly twice as far as Mobile from where I live. I could do Mobile, but I don’t think I can do DC. What a bummer.
Amtrak?
If you have a few free days, you could always book a bedroom or roomette and hop on a train to DC. Or drive to Orlando and catch the auto train, and drive down the I-95 corridor back to Florida (in terms of distance, it would be like making the round-trip to Mobile).

I live in Philly
And I tell you something, ever since I moved here, the sports gods have been playing quite a joke on me (or doing me a favor, depending on how you look at it.) Villanova in the tournament last year, Phillies twice (against my beloved Dodgers), and now Temple (maybe). Folks at work (Temple alums) will have a field day with this. For the sake of some sports respect after the results of the aforementioned match-ups, I firmly request a Bruins victory. ;)
I should also mention
..that like Nestor and some others in this community, I will be back in LA for the game. Unless I fly back early… We’ll think about it. Either way, Go Bruins!
The Boise State vs. TCU matchup is nothing but political chicken (bleep).
… but they don’t want a mid-major team to play a power team and possibly embarrass them in front of a national holiday audience.
I’ll bet anything that, for example, if TCU beats BSU, someone will say, “Sure, but they only beat Boise State!” and then someone will say that “Boise State couldn’t beat TCU!”
And vice versa, and so on, etc.
SO, I guess this means that the only way an undefeated mid-major team (whom the BCS Power Conference teams are too chicken-sh*t to play on the road or at a neutral site) will get into the National Championship Game is if there are THREE such teams going undefeated???
Cowardly BCS chickensh*ts moving the goal posts with GD Mack trucks.
I hope the game goes 48-47 in triple-OT, and the ’Bama-Texas game only turns into a 10-9 crapfest.
This pisses me off.

Yeah, that Boise-TCU game is
a total fricken’ joke. Iowa – Boise State in the Fiesta and TCU – Georgia Tech in the Orange would make so much more sense.
Am I the only one who thinks BSU could take Texas or Alabama?
BSU may not have the size, but heaven knows they got toughness. They don’t hit ehavy — they hit hard and fast.
"In this program your passion bucket must be full to play SC." -- CRN, to Dan Patrick, 1/2008
Nah
I’m pretty sure TCU is better than BS.
UCLA '08
Give Boise one year
They will be the best team in the country next year when their really young team (I’ve heard one of youngest in FBS) is a year older.
They do the same crap in basketball seeding too
Matching of two mid-majors in the first round with the rationale being: “Well we want one of them to advance, see?” I hate this stuff. It just seems like some feeble attempt to protect the “big boys” from any competition (kinda like Florida avoided all year until Alabama). Georgia Tech and Iowa is a god-awful matchup. The BCS has yet to get it right, and they probably never will. A playoff could not come soon enough.
Like this guy
“Why should Boise State and TCU, who are both undefeated, be satisfied?” said Rep. Joe Barton, a Texas Republican who is trying to pass legislation to change the BCS. “One might say they were bought off, paid off, by going to the so-called BCS bowl.”
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/football/ncaa/12/06/bcs.title.game.ap/index.html?eref=sircrc
Yep
First thing I thought when I saw that as well. They obviously want to play them off against each other instead of squaring them up against teams from a major conference. Was kind of hoping that my alma mater, Iowa, would be going to the Fiesta Bowl to take on TCU.
This system is a complete and utter joke and disgrace.
