This is what we want in a Heisman winner: Talent and poise to go along with the numbers. Unlike one former winner who is rotting in jail, Gerhart isn't going to embarrass the award.

A well-written article
and I would love to support a Pac-10 player, but I would have to vote for Nebraska’s Ndamukong Suh. Not a flashy offensive star, but I’d say the best player. In the Big 12 championship, he was in the Texas backfield as much as Colt McCoy, and his numbers for the year are amazing.
Great to see the $C dig, though.

I can't find it, but ESPN had a really good article on Gerhart
comparing his stats to Tebow, Ingram, and McCoy’s accomplishments on the field.
Long story short, as you would expect the other guy’s best statistical performances were against the weaker teams on the schedule. Gerhart, however put up his best games against the strongest teams on the schedule. It was a very impressive comparison, and I wish I could find it to share with you guys.
The best thing you can do for your children is to love their mother. John Wooden
That is not entirely true
One of Gerhart’s best games was against a weakling ND defense. Ingram’s best games have been against VaTech, Ole Miss, South Carolina and Florida. All of those are top 30 defenses. Don’t get me wrong, Gerhardt is a monster and I would love to have him on my team any day. But to compare him and Ingram is a bit of a stretch. Ingram has played higher defenses all season and has a higher per carry avg. He also shared carries with another stud named Trent Richardson. He leads the nation in YAC and is very good as a pass catcher coming out of the backfield.
I would rank them like this
Ingram/Suh virtual dead heat
Gerhardt close behind
CJ Spiller
Everybody else
Auburn and Tennessee fans are a lot like Slinkys...neither are worth much but you do get a sense of satisfaction from pushing them down a flight of stairs
YAC above is yards after contact

If I could vote
Gerhart first
Suh second (actually very close between these two for me)
Ingram third
Gerhart's
stats are head and shoulders above any of the other candidates. In a perfect sports reporting world he would win, no questions asked. However, the “storylines” of all the other candidates are far more interesting. How Ingram has “willed” his way into Heisman talk. How McCoy has “waited for this” for the last three years, always coming up short. How Tebow is the greatest ever, and the ultimate class act. Blah, Blah, Blah.
Gerhart has done nothing but produce all year long, and done it in games when experts said he’d have a tough time. He’s done it without the extra attention. And he’s done it better than anyone else.
Gerhart for Heisman or bust. I don’t like Stanford much, but I love Toby Gerhart (and John Elway).

I'm indifferent
Although I’m sure the fishwrap is going to cover the Heisman story as one big conspiracy to keep Barkley from winning, I don’t particularly care who wins. What I would like to see is having it go to a good character guy. I would also like to have a dedicated Christian win, because I love to watch the announcers cringe when Christians use the “G” word and especially the “J” word.
My disagreement is regarding Elway. I always thought he was a whiner and a crybaby, stemming from “The Play.” All he did after that was to gripe and complain and whine. And I never thought that Elway “deserved” to have the Broncos win the Super Bowl. I would have preferred that Elway go the same way as Ernie Banks in terms of world championships.
screw john elway!
i’ll take jim plunkett. gerhart deserves the heisman, he earned it this year. suh just as much, but it’s like warren sapp defensive players don’t get it. woodson won it because he was also returning kicks.
