Interesting article about Congress getting involved in this issue. Also interesting/comical are the quotes from BCS officials - they are so mad about this legislation.

Horrible picture that accompanies the article though of some no-class jerk.

Anyways, read on...

Excellent

While I hate that Congress is spending time on this, it is a multi-billion dollar business across multiple states and sadly, the only way we might get a playoff system is if it becomes law.

I feel the same way.

Congress has more important things to focus on right now. This strikes me as just another way to pander to the masses.

If congress is going to look into anything, it should look into corruption within the NCAA investigation arm.

Disagree

I would much prefer that congress deal with the BCS system, or what should be the national pie, or state birds, or naming post offices. When congress involves itself in things which are deemed important, they generally screw it up.

It's a money thing, more than a "True National Champion" thing

Almost all of these schools receive some sort of federal funding and you have the NCAA who I believe has some monopoly exemptions endorsing a system that funnels millions of dollars to a select few of these schools. If it wasn’t for congressional pressure getting them to open up the system the little bit is is now there would have been on BSU-Okalahoma or Utah-Alabama. When you have a majority of colleges screaming that the system is tilted against them, that is a reason for congress to act, as otherwise there is no incentive for the system to change.

I can’t remember if it was here or another site, but someone mentioned that Baylor, who hasn’t gone to a bowl in years, has made more money from the BCS trickledown than this mid major school who had been to an actual bowl game 3 out of the last 4 years.

the relevant text

“(a) Promotion of Game- It shall be unlawful for any person to promote, market, or advertise a post-season National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) football game as a championship or national championship game, unless the game is the final game of a single elimination post-season playoff system for which all NCAA Division I FBS conferences and unaffiliated Division I FBS teams are eligible.”

The BCS is the final game of a single elimination post-season playoff system, featuring two teams, so nothing changes with this bill.

Unless the power is really in the “for which all NCAA Division I FBS conferences and unaffiliated Division I FBS teams are eligible.”, in which case we’ll have a 119 team single elimination playoff, which will of course guarantee that the best team wins the national championship.
