Around SBN: Off Tackle Empire interviews Rich Rodriguez

I'm not sure if anyone picked up on this or how valid the two sources are, but it certainly is an interesting option. She might actually be able to negotiate a half-way decent TV contract. Who else is in the running, and what does everyone else think about Rice?

From what I've heard

shes rather knowledgeable about sports so that’s a plus. She doesn’t have much of a track record in sports so I’d like to hear some more about her plans/thoughts on the conference before I make up my mind on her candidacy.

The leader seems to be former Stanford AD Ted Leland who is widely respected nationwide and many inside the conference have a close relationship with him. Other names I’ve heard are David Baker, former Arena Football commissioner and Karl Benson, who is WAC commissioner.

Baker's interesting

These guys are probably capable of being impartial, but I wouldn’t be too happy about hiring the dad of a trojan football player.

mymeaningless opinon

i’d rather have someone with a viable track record in the field. doubt she’s ever negotiated a tv contract or look at the ncaa guidelines. and she gives me the creeps

This time I'm a contrarian

I don’t want someone with a track record. To have a track record, a person would have to be an insider and would almost have to have a “business as usual” mentality. I want someone to say “Hey, why is it that the Pac 10 is never on national TV? I want answers by tomorrow morning.” Then he or she fixes that.

And most of all, I want someone to say, “Hey, what’s going on at justsc. Those ncaa rules that they violate are also Pac 10 rules. I don’t care if tne ncaa-holes (copyright BG83, I think) won’t enforce the rules, I will. Mr. Garrett, I’ll see you in my office at 9:30, just after I’ve re-negotiated our TV contract. And by the way, Mike, you won’t be busy during bowl games or the ncaa tournament next year.”

I don’t see someone doing anything like that unless he or she is an outsider.

Condi

going after USC is a long shot. She is a loyal Bushie after all.

It doesn't have to be Condy

I didn’t know there was a Rice or Bush (the ex-president, not the ex-real estate agent) connection to justsc. I want the commish to have no ties to anyone or anything from the education establishment, or from the government. I don’t have a great deal of respect for anyone who is entrenched enough in either of those bastions of independent thinking to be put in charge of the Pac 10. In fact, I want someone without a famous name or a famous pedigree other than success in prior endeavors and an ability to lead. I don’t want someone who has to consider how bad the big picture would be with justsc on probation. I want someone to call the balls and strikes, not worry about the standings.

I would be my first choice, obviously, and I don’t have to say what my first task would be.

But my second choice would be a retired judge, I think, like the late David Eagleson. (He ordered me to call him Dave during some stuff he was refereeing after he retired, and that’s the only order by a Supreme Court Justice that I willfully disobeyed. I couldn’t call him “Dave” any more than I could call Coach “John.”)

My preferred choice would know no one at any level of the hierarchy at any member school also, either.

So look for the assistant Commissioner to get elevated to the job, and look for business to continue absolutely as usual.

Whoever THAT Person Is, Fox...

…THAT’S the person I want in there, as well. No pre-conceived ideas, no alliances, no deals.

Just, “That is wrong, and we’re not doing that any longer. This, on the other hand, is how it is supposed to be done, so this will start NOW. Now, I have a list of questions for you, and I want complete and truthful answers to all of them; if you don’t know, FIND OUT. If you can’t handle this, there are boxes by the door”

PAC-10 Commissioner

I believe we need someone who has at least good experience negotiating successful TV contracts. After that comes a personality strong enough to want all members to play by the same rules, and sanction those who don’t. Sounds like they will have to go outside and find someone other than the current bureauocracy…. But not Rice or some other big name with no experience on the TV side.

My family actually knows Condi’s brother. Her goal in life is to be commissioner of the NFL. She’s a huge football fan. She was provost (i think) of Stanford. She gets my vote.

According to the ESPN bottom line, Condi turned down the job

Apparently she was offered the job, but declined and instead will teach at Stanford.

USC has nominated...

To make sure that the Pac-10 adheres to the same enforcement policy towards USC that the NCAA employs, the school has forwarded the names of the following candidates to be the next commissioner: Mike Garrett (played for McKay so didn’t have to go to class), Charles White (didn’t go to class so he and about 20 others “made up” with a Christmas speech class), Todd Marinovich (criminal history), and OJ Simpson (face of SC — could be made available on work release program).
