Spaulding Roundup: Throwback Time?
We might be seeing our Bruins in these uniforms at the Rose Bowl for homecoming game this year:
Those are the Bruins celebrating a Rose Bowl victory over Michigan State in 199666. Per Dohn UCLA is thinking about wearing the throwback uniform for a game in 2009:
It is a light blue jersey with a pair of white stripes on the shoulders and white numerals. UCLA wore plain gold helmets.
The target for throwback day is UCLA's homecoming game, which would allow the school to celebrate the program's history.
It would be nothing short of awesome. Let's hope they get it done.
Also on another note, CRN is "much further along" in recruiting class of 2010 than he was for 09.:
UCLA football coach Rick Neuheisel said the Bruins were well ahead of last year's pace when it came to the 2010 class, and offering recruits. The Bruins have more than 20 offers out to high school juniors.
He acknowledged how different it is now compared to when he coached at Colorado and Washington.
"That's part of the deal," he said. "You've got to accept it, and that's fine. We're much further along than we were a year ago. Much further along."
That's a scary thought for Pom Pom and his poodles and I bet it will undoubtedly lead to more scuds from South Central. Good times.
GO BRUINS.

Throwbacks
Normally I hate it when teams break out new uniforms because it is almost always a shameless ploy to sell jerseys (especially when new unis are broken out nearly every year). But if these are worn for a homecoming next year, count me in! Just beautiful.
And as to the continued good recruiting news, for everyone who suffered through 5 years of Dorrellian hell, it is so refreshing to be excited about Bruin football again. No wonder the Trojies are so interested in us…we are relevant again.

What year were these worn?
It says 1996 in the article, but it looks older than that to me. I am pretty sure those unis were earlier. Maybe 86?

The Rose Bowl game
versus Michigan St. was in 1966. The Bruins defeated a previously undefeated Spartans team.
Nestor, I graduated in 95 and have had alumni season seats since 96.
It was funny when you posted 1996, I had a brief moment of recollection, and said to myself, “Gosh the scoreboard sure looks the same as today, perhaps, he is correct since you are fact machine.” For a moment I thought was losing it.
I double checked the info on RoseBowlHistory.com website.
I love the throwback idea.
If you google “passion bucket gear” there are some funny shirts with CRN’s motto.

This is GREAT!
Earlier this year, I mentioned I would like to find some throwback jerseys. I had even gone to Mitchell and Ness to see if they offered any. They don’t.
Whether or not they do this to sell Jersey’s I’ll get in line to buy one. Those are some sweet looking colors.

Love the idea
The nation knows about our basketball history but has no clue on our football tradition. Even when ESPN did their rankings a month or two ago, they were surprised with our ranking. Come to think of it, our own fanbase doesn’t truly know our tradition. Our previous 2 coaches didn’t tap into this. CRN knows the history and how proud of a tradition we have. I absolutely love that CRN is doing this and think its a great idea.

1966 Rose Bowl
My wife and i were at the game and it was terrific!!! Billy Barnes was fired after 1964 season and Tommy Prothro, fresh from taking Oregon State to the 1965 Rose Bowl with Terry Baker, came to UCLA. The Bruins had lost to MSU early in the season as I remember, but played them tough in the Rose Bowl. That was the season when we beat SC on the Gary Beban last minute passes to Altenberg and Witcher, and an on-sides kick in between that according to Jim Murray in the LAT “everyone in the coliseum knew it was going to be an on-side kick except for the SC front line”. Lyn Stiles made the key tackle on the 2 point attempt and we were golden over MSU.
If those are the uniforms, we should wear them all the time.

Agree-- This is the Famous 1966 Rose Bowl Victory -- 14-12 over MSU
My senior and yell leader year.
My avatar is the patch on my yell leader’s sweater from that Rose Bowl.
Great season, great memories.
Can it really be 43 years ago? I guess I really am old.

Wrong! These were four-colored jersies..
..when guys like Bob Stiles wore them: Blue, white, mud, and blood!
’66’ll tell you; they were classy uniforms, sans adornment and the frills that we see nowadays. They just said, “we’re here to play football” and the guys who wore them made believers out of MSU, USC, and the rest.
Got doubts? Ask Bob Apisa!
Some real great years, Bruins.
God, it's great to be a Bruin!

Goose Bumps
Every time people post about that game, or the sc game that year, I get goose bumps.
And, that’s from games that were 43 years ago. That’s what bleeding blue and gold does to you.

That's one, slow-healing "wound"
I didn’t have quite the on-field vantage that you did, but those games have been imprinted into my DNA just as indelibly.
I love my school.

Is that what that is? Sweet!
My avatar is a picture of me with my brother and a buddy a few seconds after Eric McNeal intercepted Booty’s pass to put an end to South Central’s bid for another BCS National Championship game. I handed my cell phone to the Bruin behind us and asked him to take the picture. On a bigger better resolution photo you can see the players still on the field.
Another beautiful day. Mind you I was in attendance for wins #7 and #8 of our 8 great wins in the 90s. But this was far sweeter for me.

Incidentally,
Jimmy Raye, the recent OC hire by the 49ers, was the QB on that MSU team. So far, Raye is not exactly being welcomed with open arms by fans. I guess his offenses in the past have not fared so well, statistically.
It’s funny how, when you see someone your age for the first time in decades, it seems like they have aged much more than you have.

Love The Throwbacks For Homecoming
I really hope they can find some of the originals and get the shape of the numerals right. I would not be happy to see them shaped like the unis from the Toledo years.

Throwback Unis
I have to admit those are sweet-looking. I just hope we wear our normal game-day helmets with the cursive “UCLA” on them when we wear the throwback unis. The plain-gold helmets look a little too “Notre Damish” for me, IMHO.

Plain gold helmets
I have always liked plain. I didn’t really mind when Notre Dame copied our helmets. I wouldn’t mind seeing us go back permanently to the plain helmets. Maybe we could sue Notre Dame for helmet infringement.

Good Idea
While we’re at it we can include Navy and several others in the suit.
BTW, I looked at Insomniac’s site this morning and it gave me an idea. If we do throwbacks for a game, it would be cool for the Spirit Squads to wear unis from the same year. What do you think, 66?
