Coffee Is For Closers: Recruiting Overflow Thread

A-B-C. A-Always, B-Be, C-Closing.

Always be closing, always be closing. Could Randall Carroll be the last domino to fall in what is shaping up to be the best signing day for UCLA football since 1998. From Eric Sondheimer in the LA Times (site is crashing from traffic):

I've confirmed that Los Angeles Cathedral receiver Randall Carroll has chosen UCLA as his college choice.

It puts the final touch on a day to remember for the Bruins. Not since the 1990s has a Bruins program succeeded in landing as many late-deciding top recruits as Coach Rick Neuheisel and his staff did today.

It's the second time in a month that UCLA took away a USC commit. In January, tight end Morrell Presley from Carson enrolled at UCLA after being a long-time USC commit. Now Carroll, the fastest teenager in California, will join him at UCLA after being committed to USC for more than a year. He was scheduled to make his announcement on FSN Prime Ticket at 6:30 p.m. (tape delay).

Carroll is the reigning 100- and 200-meter state track champion. USC wanted Carroll to play cornerback. UCLA wanted him at receiver, and that’s what probably won out.

We will wait for the confirmation. Meanwhile here is what CRN had to say about some of his key signees in an afternoon presser:

Kapolei (Hawaii) High OL Stanley Hasiak
"Thrilled to death when he announced this morning he was going to UCLA. This is a big guy who benches 435 pounds right now. He likes football. He likes the physical challenge. ...He can play right away."

Punahou (Honolulu) High ATH Dalton Hilliard
Neuheisel said Hilliard will come in as a defensive back, rather than a running back, because of depth.
"He's willing to do whatever he needs to do." Neuheisel said

Centennial of Corona receiver Ricky Marvray
Will start at receiver, but could move to another position.
"It always behooves you to have people dying to become Bruins in uniform. Clearly, a UCLA guy."

Timpview of Provo (Utah) offensive lineman Xavier Su'a-Filo
"A neat surprise for us today. A very, very great kid. This is a kind of pied-piper personality. He's going to have a lot of fun being a student at UCLA. Aside from that, an unbelievable talent. He's a 300-pound guy that can dance around like nobody else's business. ...He put on a Bruin hat and made our offense jump and scream."

Stonewall Jackson of Manassas (Va.) running back Damien Thigpen
"It's fun to have speed back in the program, and this guy's highlight tape is indicative of that."

And about the day UCLA football had today:

--He thanked the administration and staff
--"I believe UCLA football had a great day. Very, very exciting day for us."
--"Offensive line coahc Bob Palcic had never been to Hawaii. He had been four times in the last month."
--Said offensive line was the primary concern, and was very pleased. He said UCLA shored up depth at linebacker and in the secondary.

As of right now scout.com ranks UCLA's recruiting class number 7 in the nation (number 16 per rivals.com). Again all of this happened after going 4-8 season.

Coffee is for closers baby.

GO BRUINS.

UPDATE (N): Carroll makes it official:

Fox just aired Cathedral receiver Randall Carroll's announcement he chose UCLA over USC.
"I pretty much made my decision today,'' Carroll said. "I'm looking forward to the youth we have on the team. Everybody is young.
"I think I can get on the field pretty quickly because the lack of speed. That's what I bring to the field."

And Dohn reveals how CRN had an "ace in the hole" wrt to Hasiak and other recruits in Hawaii:

Bruins coach Rick Neuheisel hired intern Vae Tata as a full-time assistant for a couple of weeks so Tata could go out on the road recruiting.
It was cleared through the Pac-10 and the NCAA, and Tata passed the recruiting test so he could go on the road. He spent two weeks in Hawaii, and from everything I understand, did an awesome job.

Just brilliant.

Simply an incredible effort by Neuhiesel and the entire staff. Congrats to all of them. GO BRUINS.

UPDATE II (N): Might want to check out the latest recruiting rankings on Scout.com. Guess which LA school is at top at the end of signing day. GO BRUINS.

Hey that's in the top

But looking for one more confirmation.

WHAT A FREAKING DAY.

Duh! I was distracted by the writing in bold!

This is the best signing day in my memory. Have never seen UCLA finish so well. Unbelievable. Let’s beat the trOJans tonight, and cap off a perfect day!

Absolutely

great day for the Bruins!!!! To nail a recruiting class such as this one coming off a bowl win is one thing, but to do this after going 4-8 is another. CRN is one heck of a coach and one heck of a recruiter. The unit that killed the Bruins last season was the o-line. So what does CRN do? He goes out and signs 6! offensive lineman. Getting Carroll away from sc and then beating the trOJies in basketball would put an end to an incredible day for Bruins Nation.

Go Bruins!!!

Dohn Confirmed

Dohn on his blog has confirmed that Carroll is a Bruin. Apparently he was told earlier in the day in confidence and had agreed to keep a lid on it until the press conference or it leaked elsewhere. Great day to be a Bruin!

It's too bad the LA Times had to ruin it for the kid

but now his presser is a must see. Cherry on top.

Unbelievable

CRN, wow, what a job, and what a job by the other coaches. Superlative performances in my opinion. I’m thinking that we will be back on the map in football in no time.

The last time I was this excited on signing day...

…was the Deshaun Foster class brought in by Toledo. What a tremendous effort by RN and Co! Now let’s have the Ben Ball Warriors thrash the Trojans and top off this tremendous day in Westwood!

Good Gawd!

My endorphins are overflowing the passion bucket right now! Jedi Masters Neu & YodaChow have put a phenomenal class together. And I just got my reminder email to keep or upgrade my season tix.

Hey whats up with the online fishwrap crashing? Can’t be all those trOJies trying to peek at what’s happening in Westwood? WHY would they do that????

GO BRUINS

NEVER STOP. NEVER STOP FIGHTING...

…’TIL THE FIGHT IS DONE.

Costner’s Eliot Ness said that to DeNiro’s Capone in “The Untouchables,” and Nation, does that ever hold up today.

To paraphrase what CRN said recently, if a recruit tells you he’s committed to someone else and he looks like he emans it, you can’t do anything else but wish him well.

But if that recruit is still taking meetings with coaches and making visits to schools… THE FIGHT ISN’T DONE.

And who are our Untouchables?

Neuheisel = Eliot Ness (Costner)
—> Clean-cut, earnest, enthusiastic, working to live down a bad early rep (Ness with the failed bust, Neu with the cliched "baggage") and stay clean in a corrupt town while taking down the biggest bad guy around.

Petey = Al Capone (DeNiro)
—> Charms the local media, cutthroat to anyone who crosses him (see Boxer Jr.), and WAY too connected in local law enforcement for our liking.

Chow = James Malone (Connery)
—> Old veteran, seemingly gruff at first, but with an incredible knack for finding and mentoring talent. “He pulls a knife, you pull out a gun.” Yep, that’s Norm Chow’s offense.

Memo to Petey Capone — NEVER STOP FIGHTING ’TIL THE FIGHT IS DONE.

Here endeth the lesson.

Carroll

Will his change to UCLA mean that UCLA moves up one more spot perhaps, and maybe pull USC down a spot or two? Any chance of passing USC up? That’d be insane! Just random speculation of course, but its fun to think about :)

by captainqtp on Feb 4, 2009 5:47 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

it is close

I do not believe that Carroll’s switch would be quite enough for our class to jump ahead of USC, but it may be enough for our class to pass Texas for #6 and/or USC to fall behind UNC, to the #5 spot.

by bruinhoo on Feb 4, 2009 5:54 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Well, I was wrong on that one - UCLA's class now #4

The 10pm est Scout.com update lists Carroll as a UCLA commit, and has moved the Bruin class above Texas and USC, into a tie with UNC as the #4 incoming class.

OT but still important

Story on scout.com that Reeves Nelson was in a car accident involving alcohol and has been suspended from his highschool. No details as the story is behind the firewall…this is a bit troubling…

by bucknellbruin on Feb 4, 2009 6:01 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

wow

That’s not good

by alcor805 on Feb 4, 2009 6:02 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Good find

It’d good to know he wasn’t injured and that he wasn’t behind the wheel (although getting in the car with a drunk driver is amazingly stupid).

by Ryan Rosenblatt on Feb 4, 2009 6:09 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Reading about it now on the Scout free board

Non-subscription-blocked thread here, citing a statement by Reeves’ father on the incident. Claim is that Reeves was a passenger involved in a possibly alcohol-related crash, and had also been drinking that evening.

I'm gonna say it

Firing Karl Dorrell was the right thing to do. Officially.

Really?

It took you this long to come to that conclusion? I knew firing KD was the right thing to do sometime around 2005

Who are you guys talking about?

We had a coach named Toledo, then I must have gone into a coma for five years, and then we had Coach Neuheisel and everything is good. Who is this name you’re throwing around? I’ve never heard of him, and nobody would hire a coach no one has ever heard of.

by Fox 71 on Feb 4, 2009 7:00 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Just curious

because I really fell in love with the kid……..but does anyone know what Toma decided? I hope we get him, only because I became a big fan when we were the only big school to offer him, and he seemed like a little guy that we could really root for. I don’t think losing him will hurt us in any way, especially with Marvray and Carrol, but I was just hoping to have him because I became sort of a fan of his. I won’t hold it against him though, and in no way will be upset. How can you be, this is a great day to be a BRUIN……and it will be an even better night!

by muircoach on Feb 4, 2009 6:16 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Kudos to CRN and staff

They were behind the 8 ball starting late for the 2009 class and were selling a program that just went 4-8. Quite an achievement. NO FEAR! This is the type of empowering/relentless coach that we were seeking. The kids growing up now only can remember suc’s dominance but somebody like CRN knows that it wasn’t that long ago when we were spanking them around.

Video of Thigpen

http://www.truveo.com/Recruiting-Spotlight-Damien-Thigpen-Stonewall/id/3694276312

GREAT video/interview of Thigpen and his dad before his HS senior season from the Washington Post. He’s a “coach’s kid” with football in his blood: dad played @ Southern Miss and his uncle played @ LSU and in the NFL for Denver. What a great late-in-the-game pick-up for UCLA.

Carroll

is on the recruit list for UCLA on Scout.com. Must be official.

BTW I am fairly new but one of the biggest Bruins fans in Canada (could not attend due to prohibitive cost for Canadians). I have to say the work Nestor et al put into this site while keeping up work, life etc is unbelievable. By far the best site on the web.

Cheaty Petey

Could you even imagine how this guy is feeling tonight? You know he is shaking in his boots with UCLA coming on so strong. He is a dirtbag but not a dummy, he knows this is just the beginning of his evil empire starting to crumble down. This is a glorious night for all bruin fans. Let the celebration begin. Wow!! Go bruins.

Dohn

He deserves credit. I know he’s not that popular among some folks here, but I have to admit his blog is the best when it comes to UCLA athletics breaking news. I can’t count how many times I refreshed his RSS feed on my Blackberry today.

by drebruin on Feb 4, 2009 11:53 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Credit, schmredit

I don’t think a person is entitled to credit for just doing his job. To me, that notion is first cousin to giving a big headline to a person who returns someone’s lost wallet containing lots of money. You are supposed to return what doesn’t belong to you. That’s something most people learn in kindergarten.

Doh! is supposed to be a reporter, as they all are. In my opinion, being a reporter means that he is supposed to report accurately what has happened (past tense), rather than pontificate on what is going to happen in the future. Apparently he was accurate in giving the facts of what actually happened. That is not something for which credit is to be given. That is supposed to be what happens every time.

I will concede that he might be entitled to credit for reporting accurately and quickly, i.e., a few minutes or seconds before the other reporters. In order to out-scoop the other reporters, he must have had access to the fax machine where the LOI’s were coming or something similar. I acknowledge that he appears to have had an actual source of verifiable information. If he would stick to reporting verifiable facts, his reputation might be rehabilitated in my estimation, but he can’t quit there. I predict (but will not bother to look for) a story that somehow he implies that he knew for a fact that one or more of the surprising kids was going to commit to UCLA way before anyone else did.
