Aikman: UCLA's Next QB Coach?

Think about it, given Troy Aikman's recent comments regarding his distance from UCLA, his desire to be a larger part of it's FB program, his comments about the recruting class, considering how fond CRN is of Troy and the fact that he just got his BA. Do you think there is a plan or he is setting himself up to be a coach? Maybe QB coach? We sure need one.

You do have to have a degree to coach at UCLA. Was there an ulterior motive to Troy finally getting his degree? Think about it. Hmmmmm.

I don't know

He is one of the few analyst on TV who actually watches film and researches stats before making an opinion, so I could see him being into coaching. If he will leave the paycheck behind that is something else.

There is no way he gives up his analyst job.

He prolly makes more than CRN does right now.

BTW, when he first began as an analyst, he was really, really, bad. But he has gotten better and better at it over the years. He is now one of my preferred color guys on TV.

Agreed.

I don’t see him leaving that kind of paycheck behind. He would have to have developed an unbelievable desire to coach since his retirement. And if he did, I would sooner believe he would begin his next career in the NFL where he no doubt has an extraordinary amount of contacts.

No, I see him staying in the booth until a second retirement.

It would be amazing

but I can’t seriously see it happening. Even CRN can’t pull off a miracle like that.

Highly doubt it

Troy has never expressed any desire to coach. I think his reconnection is due in part to his loyalty to CRN. I wouldn’t be surprised if he shows up during spring practice, but he also has a radio show in Dallas and I think he’s pretty happy where he is.

Oops, that's Mr. Aikman

He’s on a first-name basis in my house.

Stranger things have happened

No one thought Norm Chow would be our OC since he could make the same money sitting at home.

Aikman might have been in the booth long enough. He could always coach and go back to the booth later.

Either way, I think he should have enough money to choose which ever job he wants. His NFL pension is probably bigger than OJ’s and that could have kept OJ golfing in Florida until he died.

I was thinking the same thing...

I think Coach RN is trying to reel him in. He certainly loves to bring back former Bruin stars (Moore and Lake).

Can you imagine being able to send Troy on a recruiting trip to some top Texas QB’s house. Done deal! Another thing that made me start thinking this could be in the cards was that Troy says that UCLA approached him a year ago about getting his degree — exactly the same time that Coach RN came on board.

It certainly would be a big pay cut, but maybe he’s got enough money and just wants to do something like this.

Easy money and faithless women, red-eye whiskey for the pain...

As for money...

Yeah, I think Troy is probably ok in that area.

what are you smoking?

Never going to happen. Come back from fantasy land. But I did hear that Bill Walton wanted to come back and be an assistant coach for Howland.

Not that far fetched.

Think about it. Use some CSI skills for a second. I think this makes a lot of sense. We haven’t heard from Troy in ages. All of a sudden he’s got 3-4 different stories in the paper in ONE week. Talking about the great job CRN is doing. Talking about the great recruiting class. Talking about how he’s missed UCLA and his desire to be closer to the program. All of this coinciding with him getting his degree? If it was all about the money, all the coaches at UCLA wouldn’t be on staff. Think about it. Troy Aikman doesn’t need money. He’s grateful to UCLA and he loves to compete. Coming in as QB coach could set him up to be a future OC or HC. There’s pretty good money there. Plus listen to tape of his intreview and his comments about the job CRN is doing and his gratitude to CRN for helping to make him successful. Troy’s Ford dealership in Texas has closed, that eliminates some of his ties. Never underestimate CRN’s pursuasive skills. Here’s the tape.

why would we need a QB coach??

Between Chow and CRN, we have plenty of expertise in developing quarterbacks. As great of a QB Aikman is, we don’t know about his coaching ability and we already have two of the best in the game at developing QBs.

Didn't CRN help coach TA?

Or, am I just too old to remember things like that?

BTW — I would love to have Bill Walton coaching our big guys. Or Kareem. Two of my very favorite Bruins of all time and both quality guys.

No, you aren't that old

CRN was Mr. Aikman’s QB coach, which is why Mr. Aikman is appearing more at UCLA.
