Someone needs to explain to me why UCLA is being overlooked this year. By "overlooked" I mean right now I'm seeing them projected as a five-seed (!) in the NCAA tournament. (Imagine being the lucky four-seed that has to face the "underdog" Bruins in the second round. Good luck.) Why is this happening? Yes, Ben Howland's team lost by three at home to Arizona State but, hey, last year they lost by nine at home to USC and no one freaked out. Mark me down as utterly baffled: this team is outscoring Pac-10 opponents by 0.17 points per trip. Last year's team? The one that received a one-seed? You'll probably find they outscored conference foes by, yes, 0.17 points per possession. UCLA 2009 has a PR problem.

Strength of Schedule

is weighing us down a bit right now. Currently, we are at #64. (By comparison, midmajor Gonzaga is at 65). Also, we have yet to beat anyone currently ranked in the top 25. That’s essentially the reason why.

Because in every component the committee uses to seed teams

we are faring poorly. Our SOS isn’t very good. Our RPI isn’t much better. We don’t have any top 25 wins and don’t have many top 50 wins. The Pac 10 is down and our 2 marquee non-conference opponents are struggling. Our numbers aren’t comparable to #1, #2 or even a couple #3 seeds right now. Give it time though. It’s why they play into March before the committee decides.

True that

Good or bad, everything will work itself out in the end.

Agree

Other than staying out west, which is nice, I don’t think the seed matters. No matter what, we have to beat the best teams to move forward. It just means playing them sooner, rather than later.

Right now, I’m worried about one thing — ASU. The rest is too remote be raise concern.
