Center Court: Ben Ball (Southern Cal) Pac-10 Tourney Pre-Game Thread

Let's stick with the same routine from yesterday with another pre-game open thread.

Given the special deal students are getting for tonight's game let's hope Staples Center looks a little bit like this:

We still have more than four hours to go to find out whether PAA, DC, JS and rest of our guys can sustain their defensive intensity from last night.

The other Pac-10 semifinal between Washington and ASU (who is everyone rooting for? I don't really care) gets started around 6 pm PST. I believe our game starts about half an hour after that game is over.

So few more hours to go. If you are looking to pass the time here to track all the action going on across the country this thread is for you.

Fire away.

GO BRUINS.

I want ASU

I don’t want any team in the Pac-10 to think they can sweep us.

Personally, I am rooting for UW

Because I think it will look better when we beat them Saturday.

by haster123 on Mar 13, 2009 5:56 PM PDT reply actions

I'm most concerned

With having a better resume than UW, since we won’t both be seeded out west. I think if we win out we’d gain the most of they lost today, but who knows.

Baseball

UCLA won the first game of the doubleheader 10-9 and the second game was suspended in the sixth due to rain with the Bruins leading 5-3. The forecast shows the rain just getting worse all weekend so it looks like we’ll get a 2 game sweep.

20-13 ASU

6:57 to go in the first half

I don't

but the ESPN game casts aren’t bad if you just want scoring updates.

Or some of us are keeping score in this thread …

It's not home court advantage

because we don’t get any advantage at home.

They don’t call games consistently. They favor certain players (Brockman and Harden get away with obvious fouls).

They are particularly dangerous at the end of games when they appear to try to equalize the score and make a game closer.

3/4 court, IMO

Shouldn’t have counted? The cuse player taking it out of bounds never actually stepped anywhere NEAR the baseline. Hard to take away a second one, though…

Wow...

Greetings from the Geezer Nation

Just back from a bus trip to Savannah. Mrs. Fox 71 was by far the youngest on the bus. If any of you have read any Janet Evanovich, there are a lot of baby boomers at this old folks home who act a lot like Grandma Mazur. We saw the place where Forrest Gump sat on the bus stop bench, and that’s all I’ve got to say about that.

by Fox 71 on Mar 13, 2009 7:32 PM PDT reply actions

Wow that was a crazy sequence of events

After the foul, harden bumped overton who fell down and then grabbed his jersey as he fell. Then Glasser gumped overton back down while he was on the floor and some pushing and shoving ensued

by karaethon on Mar 13, 2009 7:34 PM PDT reply actions

WTF

they said 96 officials for the NCAA tournament were chosen today and 18 of them are SPTRs…..

Great minds think alike

Notice MJ noting that Donny Mac won’tlike that.

Out of 96 also!

That percentage is way too high. Hopefulyl they don’t “advance” past the first round

by karaethon on Mar 13, 2009 7:36 PM PDT up reply actions

In all fairness ---

I think we should claim the moral high ground and offer to disqualify all Pac 10 refs from our games to avoid appearance of favoritism.

by Class of 66 on Mar 13, 2009 7:41 PM PDT reply actions

favoritism?

Does it matter which team we play? I’d like to get a victory over either of them

by karaethon on Mar 13, 2009 7:42 PM PDT up reply actions

This is not going well for those that believe in sports karma

I’m hoping that writing this will exorcise any demons.

Didn’t USC knock ASU out of the NCAA’s last season with a very controversial victory in the Pac-10 tourney last season? It would be fitting for ASU to return the favor this year. Of course the only way for that to happen is for the Trojans to pull off the upset tonight.

Perhaps UCLA can do ASU’s dirty work for them?

Or maybe Washington can rally and that scenario will be moot?

by insomniacslounge on Mar 13, 2009 7:42 PM PDT reply actions

man i wish there was an edit button

double “last seasons” in that sentence. i hate looking like a bigger idiot than usual

BC needs to learn a little Howland defense

Lots of wide open shots for the dookies, who now lead 35-34 with 15:00 to go. Make that dook 38, BC 36 on another open shot. Or to put it another way, 38-all.

by Fox 71 on Mar 13, 2009 7:47 PM PDT reply actions

I'm watching UW ASU in addition to Dook BC

Interesting comparison of reffing in the two games. I don’t notice the refs in the Dook BC game (probably because none of the players like to get particularly close to the guys on the other team.) But the sptrs really seem to be outdoing themselves in the ASU UW game. I’m not listening, of course, but there seems to be zero consistency. It’s not even close. I don’t think the calls are going all one way in terms of favoring one team, but they surely are going one way in terms of poor game calling. And I just saw that there will be a high percentage of sptrs in the tournament. That will certainly be interesting. This may be the first year that all 65 teams lose in the first round.

by Fox 71 on Mar 13, 2009 7:57 PM PDT reply actions

March Madness is alive and well tonight ...

lots of close games with tourney bids on the line. Very compelling.

Baylor

by karaethon on Mar 13, 2009 7:58 PM PDT up reply actions

What is required for a foul to be called underneath, anyway.

At least five guys fouled the last time W went into the paint (that’s five on each team)

by Fox 71 on Mar 13, 2009 8:01 PM PDT reply actions

at least in the late stages ...

earlier they were calling it tight. No consistency – other than consistently inconsistent, I guess.

by snorkeldorf on Mar 13, 2009 8:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Wow udub shows its true colors

Looked like an intentional foul on Thomas fouling Glasser and then Overton added a shoulder to the back of his head

by karaethon on Mar 13, 2009 8:11 PM PDT reply actions

And that's why I didn't want to play UW

They are too dirty for words.

Will an exclusion from this game count in the tournament?

sjh

by Class of 66 on Mar 13, 2009 8:12 PM PDT reply actions

It is good I'm not a coach

I would put in a tight end and just start knocking them off.

by Class of 66 on Mar 13, 2009 8:13 PM PDT reply actions

Remember Larry Hollyfield?

He could be a bit of an enforcer when necessary.

And OSU had their tight end actually play – Harry Gunner.
