An Imperfect Storm
Bumped. GO BRUINS. -N
As always, this has already been better expressed by the well-written thoughts by Class of 66, but here's my addition...
I stayed out of the game thread last night (it had been good karma lately) and then I went to bed right after the game, knowing that the post-game thread was gonna look like someone just kicked over an anthill. But I watched the whole game and was very disappointed in the team’s execution and intensity and the result. But it ended there.
This is where it’s gut-check time for the Bruins. And I’m referring to the fans, and not the team. CBH and DC, JS, PAA, and the team have enough maturity and basketball acumen to see what happened and to figure out what changes and improvement are needed. What kills me is seeing “loyal fans” rain down hatred on our team.
Last night was the perfect storm. It’s post season time, so tension and hopes and stakes, and interest from the bandwagoners, is at its highest. We played our hated rivals – where nothing beats winning and nothing hurts like losing. We played very poorly, some in part to the laudable intensity and effort from $cjc, and much from our own lack of intensity and lack of execution. All this together spins up the frustration and anger and pain from the fans. And this engenders all sorts of emotions…
When I read Nestor’s comments this morning, I see a Bruin fan who, in the aftermath of last night’s game, is hurt and disappointed by his team’s performance. We all were. I think calling them “heartless” is too strong, but I do not question N’s loyalty to these guys, and I expect that he will back in the game tomorrow. What makes me scream are comments that attack our players, attack our coach, wish that freshmen with unrealistic expectations heaped upon them not return for us, and quit on these guys before the NCAA brackets have even been assigned.
We’ve been over and over this a million times this year (no links - just do a search) how this team has some serious holes compared to the last couple years. Replacing LRMAM with ND has been a liability on defense – our team’s biggest strength. Replacing RW with JH has been a step down. Replacing KL with PAA has left us a little less secure in the middle. Replacing vocal and inspirational leaders with this team’s leaders-by-example may have hurt the intensity the team brings night to night. But I don’t question the intentions of ND and JH and PAA or anyone on the team – they are doing their best. The results may not always be there because they cannot always play up to the level of their predecessors.
Despite these and other losses from last year, there are many who seem to think that we are entitiled to the same success as last year. News flash, Bruin fans – last year’s team didn’t win a banner, and I don’t think this year’s team will either. But I'll still be rooting for them. Of course we all want another banner. But for true UCLA fans, the banner is not the goal. The goal is to have the best team with the best individuals with talent showing the best character and giving their best effort on the floor. That’s what Coach taught, and that is what I believe CBH practices as well. When all of that comes together just right, the banners will take care of themselves.
There are fans of success and fans of UCLA. You guys need to figure out which team you are on, because you cannot be on both.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Good Post
I was REALLY upset last night, so I can understand the frustrations. But during a phone conversation with my brother, seeking to understand why we were playing so listlessly he pulled the following gem from my mouth.
“Well, if they don’t win the Pac 10 Tournament, they don’t get into the Tournament (March Madness).” At this point he laughs, and I say, “A drowning man always clutches at straws with more desperation than a man who knows how to swim and can see the shore.”
It really lightened the mood. The fact is, There is no way we were going to match their intensity last night. There were a lot of other contributors like poor shooting, putting up desperation shots, and some questionable calls that caused the loss, but the bottom line is we were quite simply out hustled last night.

The Big Picture UCLA
Once the dust has settled, the basketball staff, over the past 4-5 years, has easily done its job, and that is giving the players, and fans, the ride of their lives. For the players, it is the “highlight reel of their lives”, even for those who go on and make it at the next level. None of them will forget their college experiences and how the coaching staff made them better people and players. Aboya may well become a national hero in Cameroon, and UCLA will have had a lot to do with his success, and the story will be repeated down the line.
As to football, their are many more players involved and the present coaching staff, IMO will provide for them what the basketball staff has done for basketball, the experience of a lifetime. That is the bottom line.

Agree
with Class of 66 and gBruin. We are watching true student athletes play a very competitive sport under a microscope, at an institution with very high expectations. Also, I think the result of the various conference tourneys this year reinforces how dumb they are as an indicator of quality. Look at who lost in early or semi final rounds: NC, Kansas, Conn, Pitt, Oklahoma, MSU, LSU, Washington, etc. Next, if DC was hurting following the WSU game, I would have rested him for the SC game and let JH and the other freshman give it a shot. Finally, its a game. WE love it, we love our athletes and we cheer our brains out, but we keep it in perspec Big Dance. We may see you there in later round!
Shout out to 'SC
Congrats for finally winning something in basketball – perhaps we’ll see you in a later round of the only Tournament that merits a banner in Pauley.
wow
Man you said perfect, thats a good artical.
Looking ahead
is the thing to do now. I accept the proposition that this is not a great Bruin team, but it isn’t a terrible team either. It has won a lot of games and, with a decent seeding, can easily advance quite far in the tournament. Like many of you, I suppose, I watch a lot of college basketball, and I have seen plenty of teams that the Bruins should beat, playing at their normal level of efficiency. JR really hasn’t disappointed me. He is an excellent freshman, perhaps a little unsure of his role, but who wouldn’t be? I think he’ll be fine, as will all those who have had some important playing time lately. Let a few shots fall, and we’ll see a far different Bruin team than the one we saw last night. Surely we’ll be making a maximum effort, after such a relatively poor outing. Except for DC’s painful tail bone, we seem to be fine physically, so it is a question of getting our heads straight. All we need is for the real Bruin team to show up and play hard. That will always be enough.

this is one of the best posts I’ve read. No matter what happens, I love this team and I will always be grateful for the effort that they put in day in and day out to make UCLA one of the premier teams in the country. THANKS gbruin!!!
Alums vs. Drive-By's
First, in terms of success, I think that it is not inconsistent (sorry-double negative) to be a fan of success and a fan of UCLA. The question is what is success. You caught it perfectly in the previous paragraph as student-athletes of character giving their all for the school. That is success. It is inconsistent ot be a fan of ncaa titles or bust and a fan of UCLA. Interestingly, however, even there a fan would be more consistent with that attitude at UCLA than at any other school (over 100 and counting). So I am guessing what the trolls really want is win in national championship final football game and win in ncaa basketball championship game or bust. There attitude is Screw a win in rose bowl and screw getting to the final 4- win it all or the season is a failure. With that attitude, they will be happy once in a blue moon and miserable the rest of the time. And their misery is self-inflicted and fully deserved.
The voices of reason on this site (moderators, 66, gbruin, bill, etc) are clearly alums. I am guessing that most of the drive-by’s are not. I graduated in 71- I saw 2 losses in 4 years in men’s basketball, so clearly saw success as measured by any standard. However, I also saw a football team which lost to sc 2 years with the rose bowl on the line and one season with a losing record thanks to the best qb on campus (Bobby Grich) playing for his frat team (different rules back then). But I rooted for the football team just as hard as for the basketball team, even though the win-loss records were clearly different. And I rooted hard for the baseball team, which did not advance to Omaha, and for the men’s tennis team which came up short against $C my freshman year in a dual meet and won it all my senior year (same level of support regardless of ultimate result)
I think that one big difference is that when you go to UCLA, you see these student-athletes off the court. There were several athletes on my floor freshman and sophomore years in Rieber. When you get to know somebody as a person, you are way less likely to rain abuse on their heads because the team happened to be on the losing end of a game.
These are 18-21 year olds who have chosen to get their education and to play ball at the school we love. At senior day at Pauley, during the introductions, in addition to the records on the court, we heard what their major was for the degree they will be receiving in June. I am guessing that most of the alums understand the connection and feel pride for these guys, and can understand that we are seeing “success”. As for the drive-by’s, enjoy your self-inflicted misery.

I do not know why this post
is green on my screen, but if it is because it is spot on, I would like to add a second /agree.

i agree...
with the comments above. I also agree partly with Nestor’s post in the aftermath of the game. It’s certainly frustrating to see a team with so much potential (whether or not you want to recognize the hype – the departure of significant contributors from last year notwithstanding) lay an egg at such a critical time. While it’s upsetting that this happened against USC, I don’t think that’s what the biggest implication. Unlike some on here, I’m willing to give credit where it’s due, even if it is against USC. They wanted it more, and quite frankly took it to us. For some on here to whine about physicality, or refereeing, or not recognize that on that night, our cross town rivals looked more athletic and frankly more talented than we, just makes you sound like the ignorant homer that so many fans have become. What was more critical was that we lost out on a chance to maybe grab a better seed position (which contrary to what some conspiracists on this board think) the NCAA was just waiting to give us. That said, the loss wasn’t the end of the world and I think that to some degree this team has been waiting for the tourney. Now, i’m not expecting them to blow up for another final four run — though I don’t think anyone would be surprised by it. I do hope that they come out and play to their potential. I think in the end that is all you can ask. These seniors have had ups and downs this year, but overall it’s been a solid rebuilding effort. I don’t think we’ve been as good as we may have thought we’d be, but what a job DC and JS have done in keeping us on track. You’ve gotta love these guys. Tonight, we’ll figure out where we end up…. and even if we fall as low as a 5 seed, my buddies back east are cringing at the thought of playing a Bruin team that is out for some vindication… go bruins.
