CBH to be on Jim Rome Show between 11 and noon PST today

I know not everyone's a fan of Rome, but he's been a big CBH booster ever since he was coaching at UCSB (Rome's alma mater).

Plus, there's a whole fan-based superstition built up around Rome giving "karma" to anyone who appears on the show.   Basic idea is, you show up, you do well, you end up winning the following weekend.

That being said, CBH will be on today, 570 AM (KLAC) in SoCal.

Good karma?

I’ll take it. I’m not a Rome fan at all, but with all the nerves I have about this weekend I’ll take whatever we can get.

transcript

since it was on the radio – I don’t think I’m wrong posting this. If I’m mistaken, please delete it and call Fox to defend me… (I edited out some "um"s and "well"s)

Jim Rome: Joined right now by the coach at UCLA. He has led them to 3 straight final four appearances. They are a number 6 in the East. They open up against Virginia Commonwealth. Ben Howland is the Head Coach of the UCLA Bruins. Ben, nice to have you back. How are you?
Coach Ben Howland: I’m doing good, Jim. Thank you.
JR: Ben, I would imagine that after you saw what the selection committee had for you, you must have been thinking, "Yeah, Thanks. Thanks a hell of a lot".
CBH: Well, it is a tough draw to have to go across the country as a 6 seed. Abut they protect 1 through 4, so anything can happen. We are where we are so we gotta go and play our very best. We’re playing a very good VCU team who has got a great point guard, an outstanding inside presence, a kid named Larry Sanders who’s very good. Their point guard Maynor is the same point guard that beat Duke 2 years ago in the first round for VCU. So they’re a problem.
JR: You know, Ben, when you talk about them protecting 1 through 4, would it have made a difference if you were a 5, and did you expect higher than 6?
CBH: It would have made a difference if we were a 5. We thought we’d be somewhere around a 5 or a 6 going in. I thought we were a 5, but obviously we were wrong, and so we end up going further than anyone in the entire tournament where we have to travel today from LA all the way out to Philly. And if we’re fortunate enough to beat VCU, then we would Villanova most likely on a floor and their very familiar with in their hometown and their backyard, because they play in that Wachovia Center 3 times a year, minimum.
JR: Exactly, Ben, what did you do to anyone on that committee? They get a home game, in effect, in the second round, if you get through as tough a first round game as you’ve had.
CBH: (laughs) Yeah, it is. It’s going to be a very big game for us – a challenge. And we know VCU, they’re only 2 hours away from Philadelphia so they’ll have a big contingency -
JR: By car.
CBH: Right, 2 hours, by car. They’ll just take the bus up. But hey, you gotta go in there and win. Bottom line is, it is what it is. We’ve gotta go in there and win. We’ve had a couple good practices. We’re getting ready to leave here from our campus in about 12 minutes and head towards the airport and head back there and get ready to go.
JR: I know you’re on a schedule Ben if you can tell me it’s 12 minutes. Ben Howland joining us on the program. You mention Larry Sanders, he’s 6’9", he’s a kind of tough matchup for sure. You got Eric Maynor and you know what he can do. They like to push it. They like to get up and down. What else concerns you about that team?
CBH: Well, they’re a very good pressing team. They do a lot of different presses. Their coach is a very good coach – Anthony Grant – he’s done a great job there. They run a lot of guys in and out. They’ll play zone, they’ll play man. They’re constantly switching up the things they’re doing. Maynor is definitely the biggest concern in terms of defensively, because he’s one of the best, if not the best, point guard we’ll have seen all year. He’s going to be an NBA player next season – he’s got that kid of talent. And Sanders is a long shot blocker. He’s 6’9" but he has a wingspan of 7’6" so he’s really long and athletic.
JR: Ben, CBS’s Seth Davis immediately picked you guys to lose. Does that go in one ear and out the other or did that get the attention of your players?
CBH: You know, I don’t know that, we’ll see. You always have that going on. They’re picking you to win, picking you to lose, and that shouldn’t affect us either way. We’ve gotta take care of ourselves. That’s just what they’re supposed to do in the media. So that’s fine and then we’re gonna find out if he’s right or wrong.
JR: Ben, how do you think the Pac-10 is going to do in the tournament this year?
CBH: I think the Pac-10 is gonna do well. I mean, again, for the second straight year we have 6 teams in from the Pac-10 , which is more than we’ve ever had before ever. The first time was last year, and now again this year to have 6 in I think speaks to the level of play in our league I think, like Arizona getting a 12 seed, you wouldn’t want to be playing them. They end up with Utah as a 5. That’s a tough12-5 matchup for the 5th seeded team
JR: Hey Ben, how good does it make you feel – I mean it’s a different year, it’s a different team, you’ve got a tough tough road – but, to have guys that have been there before, does that give you extra confidence going in?
CBH: Yeah, our guys are very familiar, our seniors with this situation, having played in 16 tournament games during their career, and so they know what to expect. It’s a different level of play. Obviously if you lose you go home, your season is over, for your seniors your career is over. So there’s a lot on the line
JR: Probably Ben, now you’re leaving in 8 minutes so I don’t want to keep you any longer. You got a trip to go to Philadelphia. Ben, nice to have you on this show. Good luck to you. We’ll be watching.
CBH: Thanks, Jim.
JR: Thank you Ben.
Ben is all business, 7 minutes before getting on a plane. Even by Ben’s standards, but as you’d imagine. He’s gotta go to Philadelphia, going across a couple time zones. They get a tough, tough matchup in Virginia Commonwealth. As double digit seeds go, that about a tough a matchup as you’re gonna see. He’s gotta fly across the country. They’re 2 hours away. If he wins that game, he’s rewarded with a matchup against a 3 seed in Villanova, who in effect is playing on their home floor. So Ben’s gonna be all business.

really appreciate that

was sitting in my car as much as i could to get to the part where CBH showed up, but i HAD to go inside to work, much appreciated.

as for Rome, i’m a fan. i remember my brother listening to him in the car when he’d pick me up from school in the 3rd grade, and i’ve listened since. like gbruin mentioned, the show is a little shtick, and lately its become a little too soundboard-heavy for me, but i love the show nevertheless. and again as some of you mentioned, he’s just a fantastic interviewer, and always prepared. i always notice how whenever someone responds to one of his questions, he’ll go off that thread of conversation instead of sticking with a set of pre-planned questions.

Interviewers

My wife and I were talking about how poor most interviewers are. Usually it’s three questions:

1. How does it feel?
2. Talk about your teammate, how good he is.
3. Some question about “confidence.”

Fortunately, Jim Rome is waaaaay better than that; maybe the very best.

agreed

Not everyone likes his show – there is a lot of schtick to it. But I don’t take it so seriously and find much of it really funny. But Rome does take his interviews very seriously and they are almost always very good and interesting. He astutely said the other day, “There aren’t really good interviewers (i.e. himself), just good interviewees (his guests)”, so he recognizes the value of having interesting compelling guests to talk to.

Another in agreement

I think Rome is an excellent interviewer, but that’s it. When he’s doing his rants, he sounds like an eighth grader trying to be cool, and I can’t imagine that he is going for the critical eighth grade demographic. I assume I am once again in the minority on this one, so I’ll just go back to listening to opera and let you youngsters get on with it.

I agree with Fox

Rome does a very good job with his interviews, but outside of that, he’s as bad and sometimes worse than just about anyone in the business. There have been times when everything else was at commercial and instead of listening to Rome I just turned he radio off.

I detect a rift in the space-time continuum

Rye and I agree on something. That’s unusual. I guess this means that Rye is getting smarter.
