WWL Rankings of best Gus Johnson call ever. Guess who?

You know, sometimes, the "featured" writers of the WWL get it right. They currently have an online magazine piece on the Top Gus Johnson Calls of All-Time.

We ALL know which one they picked:

And the commentary is priceless:

No brainer. Here ya go. We spent a solid year of our life coming back from bars and playing this, bursting into laughter. We're pathetic. Attempting to deconstruct everything that's amazing about this clip would probably take two entire years. Most underrated part: "FOUL!" "ON WHO?"

Too freaking priceless.  I may just order the Zaga game from the NCAA on DVD just for that call alone.

Gus Johnson is without a doubt the best there is

I wish he were calling our games instead of the games in Minneapolis.

The other day to console myself

I was cruising for the UCLA-Gonzaga video on youtube, and found this, among many other tributes to Gus:

You don't already have it?

You MUST order the DVD. I watch regularly! :) I love the most “underrated” part they noted. I can totally hear that in my head! What a great call that made an unbelievable comeback even better.

I searched for this on BN ro reminisce further. This is fun to read (uclawarren is my favorite) http://www.bruinsnation.com/2006/3/23/21654/9505

Good find on that thread

Maybe we should bring back the Frisbee game thread chant? Give it a whirl on Thursday?

by Ryan Rosenblatt on Mar 17, 2009 11:51 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm not going this weekend

I’ll be there next weekend if we’re still playing. I can do it so long as we do it pregame. Once the game starts I can’t be in the game thread.

by Ryan Rosenblatt on Mar 17, 2009 2:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Pretty hilarious

There were only 51 comments on that thread! LOL! A game thread will approach 400 nowadays…

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

Still pissed that I had to miss that game

Of course, that was the one night of that tournament when CBS – Charlottesville actually picked up the Bruins, leaving my MMOD reliant self in the dark.

The first half went so badly

There’d probably have been a new one at halftime.

Famous Last words from bruinmike88
And FYI…
Can we get a petition started to never have Gus Johnson call a UCLA game for the rest of eternity? This year vs West Virginia, last year vs TT, 2002 Sweet 16 vs Mizzou. Have we ever won a game of ours that he’s done?
He’s like our anti-Wooden.

Already bought Ms. M the 1995 Arkansas game for Xmas last year.

But the games I want for me? Especially the ones with asterisks, but would love all of them (*)

1995
Florida International
*Missouri (2nd round)
Mississippi State
*UConn (Elite Eight, with the Tyus half-courter)
*Okla. State (Tyus chopping down big Country)

2006
*Gonzaga (aka the “I will always have faith in CBH epiphany”)
Memphis (aka “No such thing as an ugly win”)
*LSU (Luc spanking Big Baby)

2007
*Pitt (aka the Finals of the CBH Invitational)
*Kansas (AA at his Tournament best, racking up points at the line)

2008
Xavier (because we cut down the freaking nets, that’s why)

Shoot, CBS College Sports Network was showing the 1995 Championship Video last night at 10pm PST, and I darn near cried watching Tyus kick Big Country’s tail in.

Most of those

are on here! http://www.ncaaondemand.com/composite_sports/men-s-basketball?school_id=1070

I previously bought the ones you listed from 1995 and 2006. I also had to get Maryland from 2000. Remember we won by like 25 and Earl Watson was AMAZING! Very fun game to watch.

You should just copy and paste that and give to your friends/family as your next birthday wishlist!

Thanks for the links

I was living in the East for the Maryland game…and CBS cut away to a more competitive game. Heart break for this Bruin.

Still in the East for the Missouri game…never saw the play froma good angle until many years later. (If you remember CBS kept showing the angle from all the way under our net….could not see anything.)

Working in Beijing for the Gonzaga game. Got on the plane with a few minutes left. Check my BlackBerry just before take-off and spent 14 hours believing we had lost. Was in security in SFO for a connection to LA when I got to all the emails from friends about what a great game it was. Of course I watched a VHS recording. Have wished many times since that I had a high quality DVD of it (the game my wife calls the best she has ever seen).

Was in Indianapolis for the LSU spanking. SJ for the Pitt and Kansas. Phoenix for Western Kentucky and Xavier.

At Pauley they are always showing the Tyus Edney play, Morrison crying. Wish they would add the Shipp miracle shot over the backboard against Cal last year AND the Texas A&M game. Am I the only one that remembers that as an exciting game?

Going to buy some DVD’s tonight!

Always Something New When I Watch This

This time I noticed CBH “coaching” RH as RH defended the last inbounds pass. Incredible.

And, seeing PAA locking arms with LRM on the bench. Priceless.

What great memories.

RH!

How clutch was he?! A 60% free throw shooter, and he hit both! Even Afflalo missed one of his (badly)!

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

My favorite part...

is when Morrisson is being triple teamed by AA, LRMAM & CBH! CBH had his hands up from the sidelines and I always get a kick of CBH playing defense from the bench.

He’s very quick on the hedge and the double in the post, too – ha.

My favorite team

This group of players will always be my favorite CBH team. You had the redeemed seniors in RH and CB, the two initial CBH stars in JF and AA, and you had the group that I think have defined what it means to be a Ben Ball Warrior in DC, LRMAM, LMR, and PAA.

I love it.

by bruinponcho on Mar 17, 2009 1:02 PM PDT reply actions

Only now

do we realize how STACKED that team was! No wonder they were the ones to make it to the finals.

Sigh…if it hadn’t been for Florida’s fluke of a team, we’d have at least one more banner…

My feeling is we peaked one game too early

We looked great against LSU. Yes we did not match up well against the Gators but we were insane against LSU.

My memory from being down with my son in the Den section (my wife and I had nose bleed seats; the Den was on the floor behind the basket….what a spot for my son’s senior year!)….RH walking off the court arm around JF and vice versa. Awkward size wise but a real telling moment in my mind.

DVD

I got the DVD of this game not too long ago from Amazon. The quality of the film (and sound) is not outstanding, but it’s definitely worth the $20 or whatever it cost. I mean, who among us could not watch this game whenever and enjoy it forever? Plus, having no commercials is a big plus.

Hey Barnes!

Where you been? We haven’t seen you around much in the last few months. Hope all is well.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

Yo Tasser

Hey, my friend. I’ve been around, just not posting a ton because I haven’t been able to catch many b-ball games so I haven’t had much intelligent commentary to offer.

Plus, having a 10 month old baby at home has sort of been all-consuming. If I could figure out how to post pictures, I’d post a couple of her in her UCLA gear. :)

How goes it with you? Weren’t you on the marriage track?

by Barnes2JJ on Mar 17, 2009 3:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Right behind you!

Wedding is done…baby coming in July! Having a girl as well…so what you’re telling me is that I’m going to miss all the football games and a bunch of basketball games! I’m trying to take in as much as I can, because I know it’ll be a luxury soon…

Well congrats! Not too hard to post pictures, just load it up on dotphoto and get the embedding code from there…I’m sure you can find some examples.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

by tasser10 on Mar 17, 2009 3:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Double congrats!

And yep, you’ve got your schedule for the next year or so down correctly. Of course, it is all worth it. I caught zero football games this year (in person) but we did make it up to one basketball game (minus baby).

We also bought some UCLA bibs, a cheerleader outfit and some Bruin “onesies” in preparation for the big day. Never too early for some helpful brainwashing as to our school of choice.

I’ll try and post some pics. Thank you for the suggestion. I’m sure you will be super busy when the stork arrives, but best wishes and good health to both mother and baby.

by Barnes2JJ on Mar 17, 2009 3:22 PM PDT up reply actions

gotta love the 'Old Joe' onesie!

my 15-month old wears that almost every game day!

by AZBruin on Mar 17, 2009 9:44 PM PDT up reply actions

My favorite part

DC jumping around like crazy after Luc causes the jump ball, then after the game, jumping into the arms of whomever was around him.

Mr. BB watched this on Netflix a few weeks ago, and he was amused by how much hair CBH had then.

by bruinbabe2000 on Mar 17, 2009 2:21 PM PDT reply actions

The lineup when the team stripped the ball

Who was on the floor at that time? Obviously Farmar and LRMAM were there, but I also saw DC and AA too?

Damn, talk about one great defensive lineup

by blinkshot on Mar 17, 2009 2:24 PM PDT reply actions

I think Bozeman was the last guy

I think CBH subbed him in for Hollins after he made the free throws.

by bruinbabe2000 on Mar 17, 2009 2:55 PM PDT up reply actions

HEART, BREAK, CITY!

i remember i was watching this game a couple days after we got new hardwood flooring in our house. i fist pumped when Farmar stole the ball and this tiny rug i was standing on went flying across the slick floor and i fell on my back. i peeked back at the TV just in time to see LRMAM score and i cheered on the floor in complete pain. one of the greatest sports viewing moments of my life.

The funnier thing about the foul call

Len Elmore goes on to say he didn’t seen any foul, even though the original view showed that Hollins was obviously being held.

by SuperBruinMan on Mar 17, 2009 4:32 PM PDT reply actions

Exactly

Obvious foul. ALMOST as obvious as the shot that should have counted that DC took when he was fouled. Remember they waved the shot off? “How can you wave that off!?” Man, glad that we won or I’d be talking about that forever!

GO BRUINS!!!

by uclafan11 on Mar 17, 2009 4:35 PM PDT up reply actions

I think

the ref was looking at how Hollins’ shoulder dipped towards Batista kinda like Batista was pulling him down. I feel like Hollins would’ve grabbed the rebound but then we would need a 3 to tie. Glad it came out the way it did.

got my heart pumping just watching

I watched this game in a bar at the Denver Airport waiting to come back home. When game time was announced, I thought for sure I’d be able to watch the whole thing…then it kept dragging on. First boarding call…a few minutes left in the game. Next boarding call…about a minute left. There was no way I was going to miss the end of that game! After screaming for joy at the end of the game, I barely snuck on right before they closed the gate. My wife would have killed me if I had missed the plane – but it would have been worth it. Thanks for the great video link.

Can I Share?

This clip NEVER fails to pump me up before games! Speaking of excitement for the tourney, If you guys will indulge me, I’d like to share the following email from one of my coworkers. I’m handling our office March Madness pool, so she sent it to me:

I’m kind of excited because I have a cousin who plays point guard for CSUN, Matadors. His team won the Big West championship on Saturday against Pacific, and CSUN for the first time is playing in this year’s March Madness. His name is Josh Jenkins. Sadly he recently was involved in an accident which took the drivers life. He sustained internal injuries and is out for the season. He was a key player and has been attending the games to support his team. On the day of the accident he was with family and friends who came from Albuquerque to see him play. In the excitement of being together his best friend lost control and crashed killing him instantly. Josh was blessed and is recovering well. Poor guy has been through a lot since losing his mother to cancer a couple of years ago. Ernie and I would go see him play at Northridge. They are not expected to get past the first round, but hey, who knows. I’m praying they go a little further. CSUN, on the other hand, are just happy to be there at all. It’s a Cinderella story.

Here I was, literally moping around the office because of UCLA’s seeding and region, then I read this. Talk about perspective. Talk about how absurdly spoiled and entitled I am WRT our Bruins! There’s something to be said about working for it. So go Bruins and go Matadors!
