PAA taking names under the glass, BUT nearly picked up a costly charging foul on a breakaway drive FROM MIDCOURT.
DC played strong D at the outset, but called for 2 reach-in type fouls. HAS to be careful, or else will look a lot like Memphis in his play.
JK with a couple of buckets, and a couple of ill-advised fouls.
JA has the jitters — possibly 2 TOs in VERY limited minutes.

All in all - a decent half
I thought we didn’t play real well – aside from the 4 minute to 1 minute mark – If we can limit the mistakes on Offense and keep up the D – I like our chances
the refs are killing me and ja looks nervous – to be expected from a frosh
gordon out? lee out?

Seth said “Once in our lifetime we will see a 16 seed knock out a 1 seed”
I don't really mind that he called us out to lose
It’s pretty much good karma that we would win since he’s so bad
Really!?!

I believe it’s on the 1st hour of PMS
I don't know who it was, but credit must be given
Someone said “how about going on a run” and we ended the half with a little 13-2 business, if I remember my numbers correctly.
Listen to Seth Davis
He has to eat his words and backtrack a lot from the storm he started over the weekend.
Just got back from Work
General update plz? I see we’re leading 35-25
Poor start, better end to the half
Went on a 13-2 run. Maynor’s been limited to only 6 points. That’s about it.
Illinois:
Proving once again that the Big 10 can’t play any sport properly these days.
Illinois is nothing close to a 5 seed
record deserved a 7, maybe a 6 seed. Losing their point guard should have dropped them down at least another seed line. Realistically should have been a 8 seed, imo.
ASU was a higher 6 seed than us too
Since we’re traveling further
About the Lee confusion from BZ
Someone asked why Lee wasn’t dressed, the first response was that his knee stiffened on the plane. Others have since corrected that it was Gordon whose knee stiffened and that both are dressed.
OK, so where the BLEEP are they???

I absolutely expect a run from VCU
I think the key will be to absorb it, do soem damage control, and restore order…we got lucky with sander sitting for the last 4+ minutes…i definitely think we can do, just stay sound on D and out of foul toruble
O.A.
The other team always turns the ball over too much
In previous years, we always heard about teams missing shots they didn’t usually miss, layups and little short ones. This year, the other team just always turns it over more than usual. Wait, I think that’s defense.

yeah, did bunch of good stuff
a beautiful pass to alfred was dropped – should have been an assist,
but he traveled (seems once a game – maybe his quota is up) once and heaved a long pass out of bounds. JH is showing some confidence – keep it up!

the other teams are really attacking him when he tries it. I think he has to make an adjustment. But I get the sense DC is getting gassed a bit. I wish Howland put JH at 1 and ML at 2 and went with an athletic backcourt. Again I am not encouraged by what I am seeing tonight.

I have that weird feeling also

Man....
regardless of what happens here, it has been a very disappointing job by the coaching staff this season. They have caught the Dorrell “play not to lose” bug.
afraid of losing control

Don't want to get all emotional
but this game has shed some light into our program. I’m just leaving it at that for now.
I'm a loyal and diehard
Bruin and CBH fan but I also call things like it is. Whether people want to hear it or not. Believe me that I’m very happy we won.
Sorry
if anything, having the game come down to one last possession proves they were right for doubting us
We still won
and that is one more “X” to put on their bracket. This makes me happy. The fact we won does NOT make them right for doubting us.
Oh UCLA you sweet bitch, you've BRUINed me for anything else.
IT'S ABOUT HOW HARD YOU CAN GET HIT, AND KEEP MOVING FORWARD!
KEEP.
FORWARD.

nonsense
if the ball was in JHs hand for the last play he would have had a much better chance of scoring and it wouldn’t have been an issue

Very happy, but...
I won’t be gloating. We are UCLA, and this is not up to UCLA standards in my opinion.
Uh, not sure
what caused your vitriol. You think there’s no such thing as “UCLA standards” or you think that we played up to those standards? I mean we were outplayed, if you couldn’t see that, I really have no response to that.
You don't get a free pass, though...
I mean, your response is lame and vitriolic and again you didn’t answer the question.
Are there UCLA standards?
Did the team perform to those standards? Would you feel differently if VCU made their last shot?
No, I have a problem with you declaring what's "Bruin" around here and what's not
Take that shit outta here.
LOL
Ban me if you want. Jesus, you really are a prick, eh?
Well
we found agreement on something at least. ;-)
Look, passions run high after a game like this. I just feel we should play better, that’s all, and gloating after a win like this, meh not for me but whatever.
Survive and advance. Let’s play better and shock everyone with an upset on Saturday. I promise I’ll take a win any way we get it!
That was CBH defense
WOW… when it mattered the most, the Bruins play the type of defense that they used to play.
Seth Davis will still say “I told you so” saying UCLa should not have won by such a narrow margin. All I’ll hear is “Douche… douche… douche…”
relieved yet sick to my stomach
I think the end of that game gives seth and his friends reason to believe they were on to something
O.A.
That was great defense by DC
He didnt buy for the fake at all
I don't think Shipp was supposed to leave Maynor after the hedge
but it worked out.
whew….
won in spite of ourselves……and by ‘ourselves,’ i mean Howland
by insomniacslounge on Mar 19, 2009 9:20 PM PDT up reply actions
Oh ye of no faith
YES!!! I haven’t screamed that loud since Shipp blocked the ball and Westbrook dunked it in Anaheim.
Screw the doubters
They picked us to lose and we WON. That’s all that matters.
We dodged a bullet.
Now the question is, what happens next game?
"In this program your passion bucket must be full to play SC." -- CRN, to Dan Patrick, 1/2008
Still a lot of issues with the team
These stretches where they don’t score for a while is a bit disconcerting. The second straight poor shooting night for them.
AND WE HAVE VILLANOVA NEXT.
We took on a No. 11 seed that lost to Delaware State…
AND WON BY ONE FREAKING POINT?!?!?
Everybody from Darren to CBH to JH to JA to ND — EVERYBODY — better LEARN from what happened today and not get lazy/ stubborn/ complacent/ cocky/ stupid.
WE MUST PLAY HARDER AND SMARTER.
M
"In this program your passion bucket must be full to play SC." -- CRN, to Dan Patrick, 1/2008
Exactly
I mean if you are a casual fan of basketball and just measure things on wins/losses then I can see why some people here are happy/gloating, but anyone who has more then a casual understanding of the game has to be very concerned with what we saw today (although not surprised, as the same problems that have plagued us all season were repeated again today).
Paul while I understand being concerned
we still won a nail biter. It is all right for people to enjoy that a bit.
I was upset myself with how we looked … but still .. it’s all right to let folks enjoy this. We all need to chill a bit.
I agree with you
but come tourney time, theres really little you can tinker with…you just have to go with what you’ve got and pray for the best. Granted we can play SMARTER, and hope the refs are so quick to blow the whistle
and remember, A&M was very close and we rolled after that, so who knows
O.A.
No...
I’m happy too that we won. I just think gloating about Seth Davis or whatever is absurd. People picked us as the most likely upset were right. We were very fortunate to come out with the win.
On a positive note, though, very good performance by Holiday, and I have been one of his critics this season. I was disappointed in his defense yet again at times, but offensively he played very well.
Ok....that wasn't pretty, but let's look at the positives
It was a win.
We got a lot of practice handling the press and Villanova will press.
Howland got to see what Jrue can do at point.
Howland has to see that more subs need to get some time, provided that they are healthy…..doesn’t he?
It was a win.

True, This.
Good points. Also, Nova was run pretty hard by American tonight for about 30 of the 40 minutes.
Love My Bruins
This was awesome
I just watched that with about 7 guys who either are VCU fans or picked VCU in their brackets
Stupid if true
This is do-or-die. You don’t save players if there isn’t a next game.
These things aren't always pretty
Don’t forget the TAMU and WKU games last year.
Take comfort in this
per my fanshot, the scientists at Georgia Tech have us advancing all the way to the Sweet 16. http://www2.isye.gatech.edu/people/faculty/Joel_Sokol/profspicks/profspicks09.htm
Oh UCLA you sweet bitch, you've BRUINed me for anything else.
Winning Ugly is still Winning
if you believe in one game at a time, we won the most important game of the season.
Style points don’t count

This was our 99th NCAA tourny win! GO BRUINS…a win is a win!
All right I am out of here folks
See you in the early hours of the morning.
T – will get the post game thread up.
everyone quit it with the
“We played crappy” stuff. in the tournament, you TAKE what you can GET
PERIOD. every win is going to be hard fought if you’re not a 1 or 2 seed. that’s just how it is.
It is far better to win a close game than lose one
in previous years, we won them. This year we’ve lost some.
This is a great step forward
sjh
I really feel the only reason
vcu was able to hang was because DC and JH both had 4 fouls. How are you supposed to defend their star player when he’s getting whistles all the time. I hope this doesn’t happen on Saturday. Terrible ref job.
I don't blaming refs much but Maynor
got a lot of cheap free throws, the game shouldn’t have been that close.
We cannot go on scoring droughts. No FGs the first minutes of the 2nd half
by UCLA Championships Made Here on Mar 19, 2009 9:25 PM PDT reply actions
where was malcolm lee the whole game?
there was no gordon and no lee…starters played way too many mintues
If we had made our layups it wouldn't have even been close
We lost the psychological game with the shot blocker.
We pretty much didn’t shoot any 3s the 2nd half and become 1-dimensional. We have to vary the outside and inside.
Shipp was the only one
that attacked Sanders. everyone else tried a floater or some cheap stuff like that
by bucknellbruin on Mar 19, 2009 9:27 PM PDT up reply actions
What do you guys think of our defense today?
by UCLA Championships Made Here on Mar 19, 2009 9:27 PM PDT reply actions
would've been great
but too many fouls were called – whether they were deserved or not
by bucknellbruin on Mar 19, 2009 9:27 PM PDT up reply actions
Hamstrung
by the refs. And yes I CAN blame the refs! Maynor was getting away with murder out there and getting every single call plus a great many non calls!
Oh UCLA you sweet bitch, you've BRUINed me for anything else.
refs weren't consistent...
sometimes a hedge or a bump was a foul…other time it wasn’t….they definitely got their share of time at the line…
Maynor got some calls
but really, we missed too many layups and short shots. Plus, give VCU credit for sinking some tough 3’s to get close. At least Seth can’t boast for 12 months about his pick.
Some calls!?!
What calls did he NOT get? I’d like to see a highlight reel of calls he didn’t get. It wouldn’t be that long a reel.
Oh UCLA you sweet bitch, you've BRUINed me for anything else.
Refs will be worse on Saturday
A home Philly crowd for Villanova? Expect even more blown calls. UCLA needs to not make things worse with their pathetic shooting… especially all the blown layups.
Why didn't we take it at Sanders?
It seems like the obvious strategy. This is the second or third time this season I’ve asked a similar question. What’s up with that? Is it players or coaching?
Bruins Forever
I think it's more the players and their style. Besides Josh, we don't really have the Westbrook type player that will take it at a guy and challenge them like that.
Also we don’t have the low post guy to get fouls on their bigs
They did take it to him a few times
He either blocked it or didn’t get called for that fifth one.
I thought for sure he would get called for it when Aboya was shoved on that layup attempt.
Not worth blaming the refs
If we had made our layups it wouldn’t have been an issue
JS
I thought he was more of the steady scorer at the start of the 2nd half that made sure we kept the lead early
To everyone complaining
about our performance….I’m circling UCLA on my bracket right now.
greg in denver - UCLA guy for life
If needs be, I can take Post-Game Thread.
I think I have an angle on it.

It wasn't pretty, but we got the W
There are definitely some things to improve, but let’s keep in mind that this is a tournament game and wins in the tourney don’t come easy. Let’s enjoy this for a little bit. I don’t think anyone expected this to be easy and it wasn’t. VCU is a good team and we traveled across the country to beat them. Let’s chill for a little bit everyone and enjoy this. Tournament wins are something to be appreciated, even in the first round.
by Ryan Rosenblatt on Mar 19, 2009 9:34 PM PDT reply actions
One more thing -- I overlooked ND's game -- he may be player of the game
13 rebounds! 1 Block 10 points so a great double double
sjh
Villanova
Certainly size-wise UCLA matches up very well with them. IF UCLA can play their lockdown defense that previous teams had done and if they focus on offense, they should beat them. But that’s a big IF with this year’s team.
So say we all.

he’s a frakkin toaster if I ever saw one.
Oh UCLA you sweet bitch, you've BRUINed me for anything else.
Whoa
that was almost too nerdy reference for even me! Almost…
Oh UCLA you sweet bitch, you've BRUINed me for anything else.
Our next game is at 10 am PDT on Saturday
not great … only 36 h recovery time.
Seth Davis running his mouth again.
Not talking about how there was a disparity of calls in their favor. Class of 66, you said it best. Fuck You, Seth Davis!!!
Speaking of articulate ....
Just saw Jrue Holiday’s post-game interview on the local (Los Angeles) news. At 18, the kid is amazingly poised and articulate. He does our university proud.
That's a huge difference between our athletes and those of other university...
Ours are usually well-spoken and when they speak, do so intelligently.. All too often, you just hear gibberish from others…. Not always, but generally…
Free Throws
we went 17-19 from the line. they were 18-24 with maynor 10-13.
remember at the beginning of the year we were struggling? PAA has really come through at the stripe.
Bruins Forever
36 hours
to practice stopping the dribbler, stealing the ball without fouling, sending four to the boards, and, oh yeah, layups. Pressure is off.
