Bruins overcome early over-hype.

JH showing good moves and steady drives into paint.

ND hitting the boards well, but still slow rotating out of doubles.

JS pacing this team with drives and jumpers.

PAA taking names under the glass, BUT nearly picked up a costly charging foul on a breakaway drive FROM MIDCOURT.

DC played strong D at the outset, but called for 2 reach-in type fouls. HAS to be careful, or else will look a lot like Memphis in his play.

JK with a couple of buckets, and a couple of ill-advised fouls.

JA has the jitters — possibly 2 TOs in VERY limited minutes.

No Gordon? No Malcolm Lee?

Exactly

I mean if you are a casual fan of basketball and just measure things on wins/losses then I can see why some people here are happy/gloating, but anyone who has more then a casual understanding of the game has to be very concerned with what we saw today (although not surprised, as the same problems that have plagued us all season were repeated again today).

No...

I’m happy too that we won. I just think gloating about Seth Davis or whatever is absurd. People picked us as the most likely upset were right. We were very fortunate to come out with the win.

On a positive note, though, very good performance by Holiday, and I have been one of his critics this season. I was disappointed in his defense yet again at times, but offensively he played very well.

where was malcolm lee the whole game?

there was no gordon and no lee…starters played way too many mintues

If we had made our layups it wouldn't have even been close

We lost the psychological game with the shot blocker.

We pretty much didn’t shoot any 3s the 2nd half and become 1-dimensional. We have to vary the outside and inside.

would've been great

but too many fouls were called – whether they were deserved or not

by bucknellbruin on Mar 19, 2009 9:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Hamstrung

by the refs. And yes I CAN blame the refs! Maynor was getting away with murder out there and getting every single call plus a great many non calls!

Oh UCLA you sweet bitch, you've BRUINed me for anything else.

I have to agree

not that i would have blamed the refs, but most certainly hamstrung

by Ollie on Mar 19, 2009 9:29 PM PDT up reply actions

refs weren't consistent...

sometimes a hedge or a bump was a foul…other time it wasn’t….they definitely got their share of time at the line…

by ucla06 on Mar 19, 2009 9:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Maynor got some calls

but really, we missed too many layups and short shots. Plus, give VCU credit for sinking some tough 3’s to get close. At least Seth can’t boast for 12 months about his pick.

by Vanman7475 on Mar 19, 2009 9:27 PM PDT reply actions

Some calls!?!

What calls did he NOT get? I’d like to see a highlight reel of calls he didn’t get. It wouldn’t be that long a reel.

Oh UCLA you sweet bitch, you've BRUINed me for anything else.

Refs will be worse on Saturday

A home Philly crowd for Villanova? Expect even more blown calls. UCLA needs to not make things worse with their pathetic shooting… especially all the blown layups.

Why didn't we take it at Sanders?

It seems like the obvious strategy. This is the second or third time this season I’ve asked a similar question. What’s up with that? Is it players or coaching?

We did take it at him

he played extremely well and blocked our shots

by Class of 66 on Mar 19, 2009 9:31 PM PDT up reply actions

They did take it to him a few times

He either blocked it or didn’t get called for that fifth one.

I thought for sure he would get called for it when Aboya was shoved on that layup attempt.

Not worth blaming the refs

If we had made our layups it wouldn’t have been an issue

To everyone complaining

about our performance….I’m circling UCLA on my bracket right now.

It wasn't pretty, but we got the W

There are definitely some things to improve, but let’s keep in mind that this is a tournament game and wins in the tourney don’t come easy. Let’s enjoy this for a little bit. I don’t think anyone expected this to be easy and it wasn’t. VCU is a good team and we traveled across the country to beat them. Let’s chill for a little bit everyone and enjoy this. Tournament wins are something to be appreciated, even in the first round.

Villanova

Certainly size-wise UCLA matches up very well with them. IF UCLA can play their lockdown defense that previous teams had done and if they focus on offense, they should beat them. But that’s a big IF with this year’s team.

Seth Davis running his mouth again.

Not talking about how there was a disparity of calls in their favor. Class of 66, you said it best. Fuck You, Seth Davis!!!

Speaking of articulate ....

Just saw Jrue Holiday’s post-game interview on the local (Los Angeles) news. At 18, the kid is amazingly poised and articulate. He does our university proud.

That's a huge difference between our athletes and those of other university...

Ours are usually well-spoken and when they speak, do so intelligently.. All too often, you just hear gibberish from others…. Not always, but generally…

Free Throws

we went 17-19 from the line. they were 18-24 with maynor 10-13.

remember at the beginning of the year we were struggling? PAA has really come through at the stripe.

36 hours

to practice stopping the dribbler, stealing the ball without fouling, sending four to the boards, and, oh yeah, layups. Pressure is off.
