Cowan, Lockett & Blake Impress Scouts On "UCLA Pro Day"
From Brian Dohn:
Three players whose stock rose were quarterback Patrick Cowan, safety Bret Lockett and defensive end Tom Blake.
Cowan, who had surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the summer, participated only in throwing drills, but he was impressive.
He consistently delivered strong and accurate passes, and was congratulated afterward by several scouts and Bruins offensive coordinator Norm Chow.
"Coach Chow came over and said I did a good job, so that is good enough for me," said Cowan, who has the Cincinnati Bengals among the teams interested. "I'm hoping to get an opportunity somewhere, so I'll continue working hard."
Lockett ran a pair of impressive 40s, clocking in at 4.49 and 4.45 seconds, which would have been the second-best time among safeties at the combine.
He broad-jumped 10-feet, 2inches and bench pressed 225 pounds 19 times despite not training for it because he was recovering from December surgery to repair a broken forearm.
"I've never run below a 4.5,so when I heard 4.49 … that shot me up after that," Lockett said.
"I imagine a lot of people liked me. I didn't train for the bench, and I did 19, and then running below a 4.5, I heard a lot of people saying, `Wow."'
Blake ran 4.64 in the 40and was able to bench press 225 pounds 31 times.
Good to hear about Cowan. I still wonder what our record would have liked if we had him last year. I think we would have won at least 2 more games.

Brigham Harwell benched 225 lbs an awesome 36 times, which would’ve been second of all DL’s at the combine

Hope
they all get their shots. Especially Brigham with all the things that he has been through. I personally think he’ll get drafted and will stick in the NFL.

This is good news!
And just another example how the wind bags in Sports media can influence you subconsciously. I did not think Pat Cowan would move on to the NFL. I figured he had all the tools for playing college but not at the next level. I’ll chalk that up to never hearing high praise of Cowan on any of the pre draft shows.

he had a good workout...
but he’s not moving on to the nfl. if his name isn’t mentioned in draft circles i think it’s because he was hurt all year and although he has that win against sc, there’s not much else on the record. i’d say that was his best game and he didn’t even throw a td in it(he ran one in , i think).
i think harwelland lockett will get a shot though

pro football and college ball are two different things….a player can toss 50 TD passes in college and end up anywhere from 1st round draft pick to backup arena football leaguer….sit on the bench just about his entire college career and end up starting for the patriots for the better part of a season. basically just comes down to whoever happens to get his stars to line up and makes the most of his opportunity.

I think a healthy cowan last year would
have been good for three more wins.
