Floyd to Arizona!?

Check this out!

So I guess Rick Pitino wasn't interested in Arizona. I'm not sure what other coaches were available or interested, but Arizona has settled on Tim Floyd for their new head coach. He's not a bad coach, but I don't think he has what it takes to meet the expectations of the fan base.

I'm also interested to see how this will affect SC's team next year. They have a pretty good recruiting class but I'm sure they'll lose Derozan and maybe Gibson.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

will go on Probation within 3 years. Very, very desperate move by Zona.

Yeah but . . .

Is it Floyd or the institution that is doing the shady? After all, with Floyd there is really only the OJ Mayo TV thing and some minor indiscretions while with USC the institution, there is BushGate, Senora Ross’ spanish class, Free rent, and football players on police blotters. My guess is it’s not Floyd and these things might even be contributing toward his wanting to leave in the first place.

True

but Floyd is as dirty as they come. Besides the whole OJ Payo thing, getting Hack’em as a Walk-On and also Polee (future verbal to suc) is shady. Not a violation, but we all know what he was doing hiring a parent to secure their verbal. This has been going on forever but he wasn’t running a clean program at Iowa St. either.

Wow!

Didn’t see that coming. I’m hoping they hire Lazy Lavin out of his forced retirement

Victory or until next year!

Perfect

Lavin to $c – one can dream right? THAT would be fun!

UA not UCLA or even Kentucky

UA basketball is Lute Olsen, but only 1 NT. In the mid-70s it could have been said that UCLA basketball was John Wooden, the difference being an extra 9 NTs. Remember who our coaches were in Lute’s hey-day. Lute while a good coach and a class act, is not even in the same court. Floyd is a pretty good coach, about what UA should get and should have expected, not their deluded ideas. When coaches say what schools are their dream job you hear UCLA, Kentucky, Duke and UNC, you don’t hear Arizona. Let’s see if reality pans out here.

Me thinks

that this might be the final nail in the standards coffin. Floyd is ok, but this is nothing more than a leaky bandage on a sinking ship

by Sideout11 on Apr 1, 2009 9:09 PM PDT reply actions

From a CBS report

"The Los Angeles Daily News is reporting that Floyd was not at USC today. "

A more exciting piece of news would be a sighting of any of their players ever actually being on campus. Anyway, with Timmeh being in the desert, it’s unanimous — no one connected with their bball program was anwhere close to campus. Keep up the good work, trojies. Cheat On!

by Fox 71 on Apr 1, 2009 9:20 PM PDT reply actions   1 recs

per the LA Times

“At the team banquet [Tuesday] night, Floyd gave an impassioned speech to players about staying at USC and not jumping to the NBA. He then left to interview at Arizona on Wednesday.” Pure class.

This is comedy gold

I really can’t think of a better story for the Standard and SUC at the same time, really

Dixon may go to SC

According to Andy Katz from ESPN, Floyd going to U of A may cause a domino effect. The open SC job would be taken by Jamie Dixon (why he would leave Pitt baffles me although I could see the Los Angeles allure) and Sean Miller would take the Pitt job (which makes sense seeing that he is a Pitt alum and it’s been long speculated he would eventually end up at Pitt somewhere along the line).

The most interesting thing out of all this would be CBH and Jamie Dixon battling it out for Los Angeles.

Whoops

Jaffa mentioned it already, my bad.

by LavinRuinedCollege on Apr 1, 2009 10:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh NO

come on – this too? This would make me sick cause he is a good coach. I wanted Timmeh at $c forever. Man, I am gonna just shut down and look tomorrow. All this has to be a joke!!!

by uclafan11 on Apr 1, 2009 11:08 PM PDT up reply actions

I find this extremely unlikely

Honestly, which program has the higher profile? Pitt. (At least in terms of Basketball.) Dixon got Pitt to within one game of the Final Four while Howland got them to a couple of Sweet 16s and multiple Big East Championships.

Meanwhile Floyd who has handed some pretty stacked rosters has never managed to win the Pac 10 and reached the Sweet 16 as an under achievement. Then there is the class of athlete Dixon would inherit from Floyd. The kind that break each others jaws and hand out low blows like the one they dished out to Blake Griffin.

Jamie Dixon has a bright future ahead of him. As we have seen first with Majerus and now with Floyd, USC is where basketball coaches go kill a career. He would be wiser to stay in Pitt. And Arizona would be wiser to have gone after Dixon or Few instead.

by MexiBruin on Apr 2, 2009 12:32 AM PDT up reply actions

Hope you're wrong

Read the Dixon speculation as well. I really, really respect Jamie and believe he is all class. Would hate for him to go to suc. Not just because of how much better he’d make them but I’d have to root against him. I’ve been rooting for Pitt since CBH left and Jamie took over.

by BlueReign on Apr 2, 2009 8:26 AM PDT up reply actions

It could happen

mostly because Pitt is going to be losing a LOT of their talent this year and this would be the time for Dixon to strike while the iron is hot. I think he could do better than ‘$C though, and I’m kind of puzzled as to why his name hasn’t been mentioned for more places.

by turs12 on Apr 2, 2009 10:13 AM PDT up reply actions

Zona

inquired but interest was not reciprocated by Dixon. Other openings (UVA, Bama, etc) are a notch below for various reasons so there wasn’t a real fit.

by BlueReign on Apr 2, 2009 11:42 AM PDT up reply actions

He probably didn't take it

because he didn’t want to play against Howland twice a year. Just my guess.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

by tasser10 on Apr 2, 2009 12:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Bad move for Arizona, but...

…a chance for ‘SC to get it right. I can’t see why Arizona would be so eager to go after Floyd – I know Pitino didn’t want the job, but there aren’t any better candidates out there than Technical Tim? This move will be the death knell for Arizona hoops.

As far as the Trojans go, I wouldn’t like to see Dixon go there. It would mean they have someone who learned his lessons well from a master coach. Maybe they can go after Majerus once again, ha ha.

doesn't anyone now exact gpa and test score numbers

that are required for both UCLA and SUC athletes? I’m fairly certain there are considerably higher grade averages required from UCLA students, but dont know the numbers off hand

by uclafan11 on Apr 1, 2009 10:54 PM PDT reply actions

I don't see Jamie Dixon going to SUC

Dixon chose to stay at Pitt when CBH left. He wanted to build the program and prove that it could be a power. He got close to proving it this year so I don’t think he would leave without accomplishing that goal. CBH came to UCLA because it’s his dream job. I can’t imagine SUC being Dixon’s dream job. In addition, he and CBH are good friends and they hate coaching against each other. I don’t think Dixon would go where he would face CBH at least twice a season.

by Gen2Bruin1987 on Apr 1, 2009 11:11 PM PDT reply actions

I don't either

I mean, how could he consider leaving a program like Pitt for $c? The sanction fairy is hovering closer to them every day. I always thought of Dixon as classy and that is a classless program. I would not understand that decision.

Also, isn’t Arizona in trouble? I guess Timmeh figured what the hell?

by uclafan11 on Apr 1, 2009 11:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Guys

Dixon will be pretty interested in the SC gig, if that opens up. It’s all about wanting to come back to West Coast.

by Nestor on Apr 2, 2009 4:40 AM PDT up reply actions

Dixon is from the West coast

He was born in Burbank, coached at LA Valley CC, was an assistant at UCSB, Northern Arizona, Hawaii…the allure is there. Whether U$C will be tempting is another story.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

Once you have taste of LA and Southern California

not even NYC can keep you from coming back home. Right tasser?

by Nestor on Apr 2, 2009 9:55 AM PDT up reply actions

Speaking of New York

Dixon has no more family ties to CA and his parents are currently in NY. He even spends the summer visiting with them. I know you guys miss LA but don’t project your feelings on Dixon. Some people leave LA and never miss it. I’m not one of them but it does happen.

Effect on Arizona (And sc's) roster?

Not that I thought him likely to stay, but Budinger will certainly leave UA with Floyd running the team (recall that Chase was not a big fan of Coach O’Neil’s, ‘there is such a thing as defense’ approach of 2 years ago). Without CBud and Hill, projected as a top-5 pick, UA does not retain much for Floyd to work with, and does not have any committed recruits coming in this fall.

A quick look at the UA boards shows an expectation by some posters that Floyd will bring Renardo Sidney with him to Tuscon. Sidney has not signed an LOI with USC and is free to enroll at Arizona, or any other school that will take him on.

by bruinhoo on Apr 1, 2009 11:13 PM PDT reply actions

My ideal predictions

Gibson, Hackett, and Derozan all go pro from $uC. Budinger and Hill all go pro from U of A. Sidney follows Timmeh to U of A but never qualifies with a minimum SAT score and fleas to Europe just like Jennings. Wait for it!

by rgalloucla on Apr 1, 2009 11:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Alex Stepheson

could potentially transfer again too. He’s sat out his year and now that Floyd is gone he has cause to leave.

by Ericppk on Apr 2, 2009 12:43 AM PDT up reply actions

That would be hilarious.. but a tad bit unlikely…

by impaulv on Apr 2, 2009 6:09 AM PDT up reply actions

Sidney still hasn't take the SAT

He will not be suiting up for anyone next year.

It's getting pretty late for that isn't it?

IIRC there are only a set amount of test dates and they’re all set during the school year so there can’t be many test dates remaining.

by Tydides on Apr 2, 2009 12:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Two more dates to take SAT

May 2 and June 6. I assume he missed the March 14 exam.

by Gen2Bruin1987 on Apr 2, 2009 12:35 PM PDT up reply actions

There are now reports

that IF Tim Floyd accepts the job (implying he hasn’t done so yet, it’s only been offered). According the ESPN article apparently Floyd hasn’t even told Mike Garrett yet. Reading between the lines it sounds like he isn’t as good as gone as everyone thought and FWIW Taj Gibson’s facebook (realiable, I know) says that his coach is actually staying. So we could be looking at the anti-Majerus here.

by turs12 on Apr 2, 2009 10:22 AM PDT reply actions

My guess is

it’s just a little power play by Timmeh to get a raise. I don’t see the point of him going to Arizona.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

by tasser10 on Apr 2, 2009 12:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Memphis is a much better fit for him.

He wouldn’t adapt well to Tuscon. he needs to coach a southern school.
