Some numbers to consider
We had a freshman pitcher start on both Friday night and Saturday for us. Those two freshman, Gerrit Cole and Trevor Bauer, threw 17 innings this weekend, struck out a combined 22, allowed one hit each and neither allowed an earned run. It was phenomenal to watch as both showed great talent and maturity beyond their years. It will be fun to see these two on Friday’s and Saturday’s the next two years.

Not as highly recruited, but highly recruited
In fairness, Cole was considered by many to be the top high school pitcher in the nation so it would be tough for Bauer to match that. Bauer was considered by many to be one of the top pitchers in his class in the state so he was a big recruit. He didn’t come in with as much hype though because 1) he doesn’t throw in the upper 90’s 2) he wasn’t drafted in the first round and turn it down 3) He wasn’t drafted by the Yankees in the first round and turn them down 4) He skipped his senior year of high school and didn’t decide to do it until the end of 2008 so he wasn’t at UCLA for fall practice.
