lots of business closing
I was driving down Westwood Village and its sad to see businesses closing down. I counted at least 5 empty spaces.

sigh...
another sign of Westwood just becoming an outdoor mall instead of a college town…
But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

Maybe I'm just thoroughly confused
but Tommy Taco’s next door is what everybody refers to now when they say Buck Fifty because of their $1.50 hamburgers. Maybe somewhere in the last few years the baton was passed or something. Still, sad to see a place like Roll-In-Sandwich go

no you are right . . .
I graduated in ‘07 and everyone referred to the place next door as buck fiddy’s. i never once heard the sandwich place referred to as that. somewhere in bruin history the nickname must have jumped over.

same here, c/o 2008. the taco place didnt have a name when i came in, they remodeled the place a bit about a year ago into tommy taco….actually only been to the sandwich place like once or twice

Didn't know that about the Taco Place
I think Subbies’ raised their prices around early-to-mid 00s. I’m Class of 2001, and Subbies was still solidly “Buck Fiddy’s” when I was there…though I didn’t eat there much my last few years, so they might have raised their prices earlier. I went back later and saw they were charging about $4, and I was just confused…like the first time I heard of the Undie Run, which came after my time.
But really, when they raised their prices and you couldn’t legitimately call it Buck Fiddy, it was spiritually closed.

Does anyone else remember Mom's?
When Mom’s disappeared, I knew my college days were over.

Mom's was still going strong in the 80's, but that was in on San Vincente in Sant Monica

I remember Mom's
and Captain 4Q. I also remember not remembering much of what happened at Mom’s.
Fox, you, of all people, must remember the Fox Inn (on Wilshire toward SM, I think), with your namesake challenging all comers to chugging showdowns, sometimes while standing on his head, and playing the piano and singing bawdy songs.
Good times. I wasn’t in a fraternity, but I still regard the movie Animal House as a documentary.

Subbie's Roll-In RIP
Sad to say I’ll never hear, “8 INCH TOORKEY! 8 INCH TOORKEY!” again.

Where will all the roaches and rats go to live?
Buck fiddy was closed down about 10 times during my tenure, and never had over a C-rating. I bought sandwiches from them about 5 times a week and never got sick, but I never get sick.
Oh UCLA you sweet bitch, you've BRUINed me for anything else.

LOL! Mr. BB and I were talking about that this weekend
He was never that crazy about it, but went there a lot my junior year because Mr. BB was living on Midvale and my sorority house didn’t serve food on the weekends, so I would pick that up on the way to his place. Anyway, LA County made the health gradings mandatory in 1998 and I told him about the time I placed my order, looked up at the grade, and saw it was a C. I never got sick either, and Mr. BB’s old roommate, who lived off that stuff, still has fond memories.

Actually, I got sick from In-N-Out, which always has an A rating
After graduating, I worked on Wilshire for seven years, but still would go for In-N-Out at least once a week. In December 2005 (I remember that because it was my dad’s birthday) I ate In-N-Out for lunch and by the time I got home could barely make it to my apartment door. I know it was food poisoning, and I know it must have been rare because In-N-Out prides itself on its cleanliness, but I haven’t eaten at the Westwood In-N-Out since then.

Interesting
I guess it has a lot to do with the high quality of roach that inhabited Buck Fiddy. They wouldn’t allow just any rodent to step into that kitchen!

It is truly going to be missed
I passed by Westwood the other day from OC. I missed the buck fifty sub sandwich and so I walked by hoping to get that along with some didi reese cookies. Sadly all i saw was the empty shell of the shop, but I did still got cookies. Phew, now if that goes…I’d wonder about all the other mom and pop shops around Westwood.

Does anyone remember La Barbera's?
It had great pizza before closing in the early 80’s. It was torn down to make room for a mini mall.

La Barberas was the absolute best pizza in the history of civilization
I don’t know what it was. Thick crust. Lots of cheese. Lots of toppings (mine was sausage and pepperoni). Nice and hot. Great ambience. Maybe it was laced with dope of some kind. Whatever it was, I will go to my grave remembering that my time on earth was not wasted because of the pizza at La Barberas.

Of Course!
Now you’re strolling down my (quasi-geezer) memory lane.

I have an idea.
Let’s name off the businesses that mean something to them from their time at UCLA.
Headlines: Great little diner on Gayley. HUGE servings and one of the most legitimate Chili Salsas to be had in the greater Los Angeles area. Yup. You read that right. It became a Sunday morning institution for us. Great way to work off a hangover. Plus the long walk back helped the meal settle just right.
I could name so many more!

Good News Mexi
Headlines is still the number one spot for hangover breakfasts/lunches/dinners.
The portions are huge (for the price). At least they didn’t raze it to the ground yet. That’ll be the day that I know I need to move out of wwood.

If Headlines ever closes
I’d be so sad. One of the last places I ate before I left LA.
Sak’s Teriyaki too. I hope it stays forever.

Saks
Buck fity’s rocked – ate there 2-3 times a week when I lived in the apartments before I graduated in ’99.
Still love Saks, go by about once a month to grab their chicken tery, nobody I know does it as good as them.
