Lady Bruins 102

My wife attended the Lady Bruins Football 102 and loved it so much she is demanding her mom (UCLA class of ‘74, IIRC) attend next year. My wife caught a pass from Rick Neuheisel and another one from some other coach and Norm Chow remarked, “Nice catch.” We got photos w/ Chow, Palcic and Neuheisel. I’ll be sure to post them on Fanshots because they include my 4 1/2 month old son.

Had a great time at the Spring scrimmage - sat next to a football legend . . .

I got to the scrimmage quite a bit later than I was hoping (looking for a new place to live with my wife). As my wife and I were walking through the front aisle of seats at the Rose Bowl – she saw two empty seats and remarked that we should sit there. I figured that they were spoken for – and just assumed that we would find some seats in the upper region of seats. However, my wife isn’t shy when it comes to getting her way – and she did not want to walk up the stairs and sit with a less advantageous view. So she asked a man sitting with his son if we could sit in the two seats next to them. The father seemed initially apprehensive – but then quickly relented and welcomed us to the seats.

I actually recognized who this spectator was right away – but didn’t say anything to him – or to my wife. However, after we sat down – I leaned over to my wife and told her that we were sitting next to Brian Bosworth – perhaps the greatest defensive player in college football history. After a few minutes, an opportunity presented itself to talk to him – and I asked him how he thought his nephews were going to do this year. He was very candid – and approachable – and he offered me his views on a variety of subjects regarding college football, his days at Oklahoma, and the NFL draft. Since I did not ask for his permission to report on what he was saying – I will respect his privacy and my wife and I will enjoy the conversation that we had with him. However, I did want to report that he asseverated that he offered to help out with the defense (not as a paid coach – he just thought that it might be helpful to provide the kids with some defensive guidance) when KD was coach – but was denied any opportunity. I guess I felt compelled to share that part of our conversation because I was bummed to hear it. I wasn’t necessarily surprised – just feel as though an opportunity was missed.

Overall. Bosworth seemed to believe that UCLA was heading in the right direction. From watching the scrimmage – I felt encouraged as well. There were flashes here and there from the offense that seemed to suggest progress. The defense looked dominating at times – and the speed and hitting was electric from the defense. As for me and my wife (okay – really just me) – I had an absolutely awesome time. I couldn’t stop smiling the entire scrimmage (this was due to the amalgamation of being at the Rose Bowl, having an ongoing dialogue with the Bos – I think I’m at the point where I can just call him the “Bos” now – haha, listening to our charismatic leader pump up the crowd, hearing Dick Vermeil and Terry Donahue speak with enthusiasm about the direction of this team, and seeing a panoply of high level recruits at the game and appearing to have a good time).

Hope everyone else had a good time tonight – seemed like a good crowd. Would love to hear other people’s experiences as well. There seems to be an overall paradigm shift in UCLA football – and I think the crowd tonight sensed that we are on the cusp of something special.

Hope I don't ruffle many feathers.

But, I’m just going to have to post here on what a great time I had at the spring game. It was great to get out to the Rose Bowl and tailgate in spring. It was great to be surrounded by not only my immediate friends and family but the extended Bruin Family as well. We assembled 3 families and 2 small groups of friends for grilling that included Carne Asada, Korean BBQ and traditional hot dogs and hamburgers. I got a kick out the kids, though. With all the tossing balls around they chose to join other kids their age in a pile of dirt, pushing little tractors around making construction noises. It was a thing of harmonious beauty. Brown kids, White kids, Koreans kids, Philippino kids all playing with each other and sharing toys while parents stood around them talking amiably about sports, UCLA, or just general life topics.

As for the football, It is encouraging to see how good our defense is looking as well as our run game. Time and again my buddy John would call out either Knox or Dean on a particularly good play. Our passing game looks like it’s still under construction, but I had to remind John that it is still only spring, and we still have fall camp and an influx of talent.

Seanny, I know You mentioned putting your photos up on a fanshot, and I suppose I should, but I’m posting here for all to see. I hope you do as well. I want to see your group photos people!

There's a black sheep in every family, I suppose

An intervention then a 12 step process might get her past this episode. And she needs to be loved through it all. Good luck.

I see this at least once if not more every UCLA football function

What is the deal with SC fans insisting on wearing their gear to our games? I’m not counting games where you play us, I am talking about games where SC isn’t one of the teams on the field. You know SC fan, if you don’t wear anything that is UCLA related, we already get that you are not a UCLA fan. Are you really not getting enough attention at home?

Reminds me of the SC fan I saw at a recent UCLA game. While his daughter was sporting UCLA gear, this guy insisted on wearing SC gear and went out of his way to try to stoke on confrontation with everyone, even while his pre-teen daughter was in the bathroom. Was this guy looking out for his daughter by keeping an eye on the bathroom? No, because if he had he would have noticed the drunk fan who went into that bathroom by mistake. Instead he had his eyes fixed on everyone coming down the tunnel hoping someone would try to start something. And then when someone did, he trotted out the ever popular, “if only my daughter wasn’t here…”

So SC fan, wear your gear proudly when you play us but otherwise, please give this oh so tired move a rest.

I saw some ketchup there too

Yhe guy I was talking with made the point that if they’re such big fans of the troylets, why didn’t they go to THEIR spring game?
